If you’re familiar with Jewel’s Deluxe Restaurant on the Courthouse Square in Darlington, you’re aware of the message printed on the eatery’s front door: “No Soliciting … Unless You Sell Thin Mints.”

Translated, this means if you’re not a little girl selling yummy cookies, you’d best hit the bricks.

Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again. Girl Scout Cookie season began on Saturday. Chances are you saw one of their tables set up

somewhere in the community. From now until April, these young ladies will be selling joy in a box for a mere $5.

Every year, there is a sizeable contingent that waits with great anticipation to purchase and hurriedly open a box of Tagalongs, Samoas, Lemon-ups, Trefoils, Do-

si-dos, S’mores, Toffeetastic, Adventurefuls, or the aforementioned Thin Mints. We all have our favorites. Thin Mints seem to be the preference of most, but Samoas are tops on my list.

A new cookie is being added to the line-up this year - Raspberry Rally. Described as a sister cookie to Thin Mints, Raspberry Rally is “infused with raspberry flavor instead of mint and dipped in the same delicious chocolaty coating.”

Raspberry Rally marks

have arrived

a first for the Girl Scouts: It will be the first cookie available only for online purchase and delivery, which the group says will help in “enhancing girls’ ecommerce.”

You can purchase Raspberry Rallys or any other Girl Scout Cookie online by downloading the digital cookie mobile app on your smartphone or by visiting girlscouts.org.

While it’s easy to focus on the yumminess, the Girl Scout Cookies Program teaches young girls about some valuable skills

and lessons: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Another big plus is that all of the net proceeds from Girl Scout Cookie sales are reinvested back into the local councils for activities and fund projects that will positively impact the community.

MPD Electric Cooperative awards $100,000 to Darlington County

MPD Electric recently donated $100,000 to Darlington County to be used for economic development, specifically the county-owned industrial park at Interstate 20.

Since 2020, when newly formed MPD Electric began, the cooperative has given more than $2 million to the sevencounty territory it serves to assist with the recruitment of industry, jobs, and tax revenue.

“MPD Electric Cooperative, and our founding cooperatives, has long been committed to economic development and job creation throughout the seven counties we serve,” said MPD President and CEO William Fleming. “We are proud to continue that commitment with this investment.”

“Economic development is directly tied to increased per capita income for the citizens of our community,” said S.C. Senator Gerald Malloy. “I want to thank MPD Electric Cooperative for their commitment to mak-

ing our county a better place to raise families.”

“Darlington County is honored to accept this $100,000 grant from MPD Electric,” said Bobby Hudson, chairman of the Darlington County Council.

For the first time in school history, the Hartsville High School

Red Regime Marching Band earned a medal – a second-place finish – during the S.C. Class 3-A Marching Band Championships.

Of the 48 band programs, the Red Regime also earned recognition as the best visually, which includes movement, costuming, color guard, visuals, dance and marching. The second place finish follows the program’s second consecutive lower state title.

Red Regime Director Cameron Watkins described what the honor means to the school and its students.

“We want the students to pursue excellence in all they do whether on the field or off,” said Watkins. “This year, the students in the Red Regime bought into the program and their purpose very early on. We knew we had to hit the ground running in order to make our mark. It was incredible to hear our name called for silver medalist and high visual execution and to see the

emotions pour out of our students. They knew how hard they worked, how much they had put into it, and to be rewarded for that effort is just overwhelming.”

Beginning the school year, the Red Regime knew they were young and still rebuilding from the difficulties of COVID19. The program lost 12 seniors from last year, eight of whom are continuing their music education at the collegiate level. The Red Regime has never

medaled in marching band. They’ve notched fourth and fifth place finished before.

“This year, we were able to show our community, our students, our school, and the future Red Regime members that we have developed an award winning band program across all facets,” said Watkins. “The last tick mark was marching band, and that has happened.”

There is a remarkable level of dedication, hard work and time required to

prepare for marching band competitions. Ultimately, it requires the entire membership to work together for success.

“One thing we stress to our students is that we don’t have a bench,” said Watkins. “We don’t have alternates, and there are no time outs or halftime. You must be engaged and focused for the entire performance. These students accomplished something that no one ever thought would happen.”

Drum Major Evan

Debellis and Band President Patrick Thomas led the Red Regime on the field. Other student leadership included Chelsea O’Neal, Joanna Neri, Sophia Andreski, Ethan Griggs, Matthew Adams, Kiana McCullen, Patrick Flaherty, Jacob Perdue, Dominic Nunez Smith, Sallie Ward, and Emily Haubner.

In total, the Red Regime comprises 52 students in grades 7 through 12. There are five staff members, three of whom guide every rehearsal and two who help train once per week: Band Director Watkins, Hartsville Middle School Director of Bands Marlin T. Ketter, Bay Road Elementary School Music Teacher Chrisa Murray, Percussion Instructor Tyshon McCants, and Color Guard Instructor Christopher L. Grant.

Stressing the importance of academics alongside marching, the Red Regime provides an afterschool study hall prior to rehearsals. Watkins also said it comes as a surprise to some members of the band just how many life lessons they absorb through participation: per-

severance, problem solving, working as a team and time management.

The Red Regime also draws support from the community.

“We have had many local companies, restaurants, churches, and organizations to help in many ways, such as becoming a sponsor, helping to feed students, and donating time,” said Watkins. “We have had so many parent volunteers this year travel with us and help move equipment and help in other ways. This has been nothing short of amazing for our students. They feel supported.”

While the marching band season has drawn to its successful conclusion, the Red Regime is nowhere near done for the year. Scheduled are concerts, clinics, Winter Guard, Region Band, AllState solo and ensembles, and more.

“Congratulations to all of our students, staff and supporters,” said Watkins. “We have been so fortunate to continue our success from year to year, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Taylor joins FDTC Area Commission

Florence-Darlington Technical College recently welcomed Dr. Meredith Taylor as the newest member its area commission, which serves as the college’s governing board.

“This is an exciting time in higher education, especially at the technical college level,” said Dr. Taylor. “There are so many more opportunities for students and families that will change the trajectory and significantly impact our communities economically and culturally.”

Taylor replaces Dr. Bill Boyd, who served as an FDTC Area Commissioner for 22 years.

“On behalf of the Area Commissioners, we are very excited to have Dr. Taylor join the Florence Darlington Technical College team as we strive to help the residents of the Pee Dee Region by providing an excellent opportunity to receive a quality education at a very reasonable price,” said FDTC Area Commission Chairman Paul Seward.

“We are thankful that Dr. Taylor has agreed to take some time out of her very busy schedule to work with our team and we are also very thankful for the many years of service

that Dr. Bill Boyd gave to our college as an Area Commissioner whom Dr. Taylor will be replacing with this new appointment.”

Taylor joins the area commission with 24 years as an educator in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Darlington County School Districts. She has served in a number of roles including as a school counselor, assistant principal, elementary and middle level principal. She currently serves as founder and CEO of Taylor Made Educational Consultants, LLC. She is also a professional development specialist with Curriculum Associates, Inc.

“It was a privilege learning and growing

under Dr. Boyd’s leadership during my tenure working in Darlington County,” said Taylor. “It is now truly an honor to follow him on to FDTC.”

Taylor said she truly believes that she is on a path to affect change in the lives of those whom she has been called to serve and that she has been gifted to accomplish that in a variety of ways.

“Community partnerships with local businesses and organizations to assist with providing skilled employees ready for the workforce are an invaluable asset to continue attracting corporations to our area,” she said. “FDTC President Dr. Jermaine Ford has a solid vision and has shared his plan and ideas to take FDTC to the next level and I am excited about being a part of the process!”

Taylor is a graduate of Hartsville High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University. She has a master’s degree from South Carolina State University.

She is married to Pastor Ray Taylor Jr. They have two sons and a daughter and they currently reside in Hartsville.

Johnson to lead Falcons’ football program

Darlington High School announced Jan. 12 that Jamie Johnson will lead the school’s varsity football program. Johnson has been the athletic director and head football coach at Hannah-Pamplico High School.

Johnson spent the past seven years at Hannah-Pamplico, where he found much success in producing not only winning teams but also developing student-athletes and focusing on facilities improvements. He also teaches Social Studies.

Darlington High Principal Cortney Gehrke said the school is excited for Johnson’s passion for students and guiding them to success on and off the field.

“We believe Coach Johnson brings the experience and dedication necessary to guide our football program in a successful direction,” she said. “We look forward to him joining the Falcon family.”

“I am thankful to the Hannah-Pamplico community for a tremendous seven years,” Johnson said. “I look forward to my new journey as head football coach at Darlington High School. Thank

you to the administration at DHS for entrusting me with transforming the football program, and I can’t wait to get to work.”

During his time at Hannah-Pamplico, Johnson’s teams produced 28 collegiate football players, two North-South All Stars, numerous All State and All Region honors, and set school records in many statistical categories. Prior to his time there, he worked with several other programs in the state, including Strom Thurmond High School, West Florence High

School, Richland Northeast High School and Columbia High School.

DHS Athletic Director Jamie Norris joined Gehrke in welcoming Johnson to the school.

“His passion to help kids, not only through athletics but also in academics became extremely evident throughout the search process,” he said. “After witnessing the energy that he brought when meeting the football team, we are confident in Coach Johnson to lead our program.”
