The ride of a lifetime
Saddle up, partners. The rodeo is coming to town.
On Feb. 3-4, the Florence Stampede & Pro Rodeo will bring out bull riders and barrel racers for an action-packed night of broncs, blood, steers, and mud. Pull on your boots, grab your Stetson, and head out to the Florence Center.
I’m hoping to be there, and I can assure you it will not be my first rodeo.
Having worked in the newspaper business for three-plus decades, I have been blessed with dozens of opportunities to get my adrenaline jacked up by doing something a little on the “crazy” side so that I could write about it in the paper. I’ve done aerial acrobatics in a Red Baron open-cockpit biplane - as a passenger, not a pilot. I’ve climbed into a Ply-
Bob Sloan Editormouth Roadrunner and been hammered again and again and again while competing in a demolition derby. I’ve even worn a skirt and high heels while taking the stage as “Bobby Sue Buttercup” in a womanless beauty pageant. And no, I did not win.
Of all the adventures, however, none is more memorable, or thrilling, or dangerous, as the time I threw caution to the wind and climbed on the back of a 1,500-pound bull to raise money for the Special Olympics. It was during the summer of 1994 at the Robeson County Fair-
ground. I don’t need to tell you that was one heck of a joy ride.
I was sitting at my desk at the Sports Department when I overheard a gentleman from the Southern Ranch Cowboy Association talking to an advertising rep about taking out an ad for an upcoming show at the fairgrounds. I introduced myself and collected the information I needed for an article.
I then told him I thought it would be fun to promote the show by doing a firstperson story on what it would be like to perform in a rodeo. I asked if it was possible that I could be a clown. His response left me in shock.
“Being a rodeo clown is a lot more dangerous that you think, but how would you like to ride a bull?”
I’m pretty sure my ini-
Convenience and conviction
I often hear people saying they know God has their back. They are certain He is blessing them and He is on their side. Then, next thing you know, you see them engaging in conversation or activities that are contrary to a dedicated believer.
Trust me when I say that I am in no way judging individuals, but in Matthew 7:20, it declares, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” In other words, we can’t judge but we can definitely fruit inspect. Please tell me how can we live contrary to the instructions that are given to us by our Creator and expect Him to continually bless us?
That’s like committing a premeditated crime and then believing God won’t allow you any recompense because you know He’s good.
We make His grace a convenience for us when His precious Son gave His life for our redemption. How dare we dilute the redeeming power of His sacrifice for our filthy sin that separates us
Getonboardwith
from a willful life of obedience to Him?
Yes it’s true “that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. ” The Most High loves us all and will take care of us, but Psalm 84:11 says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” He will continually bless those who consciously and purposely walk in righteousness and integrity.
There must be a conviction in your heart and spirit to understand that, yes, He loves us all, but He does not just throw out blessings to those who have not surrendered to His will.
Remember that Satan is the god of this world, according to 2 Corinthians 4:4. He has the ability to “bless” with material things as well, but he cannot give good spiritual gifts to God’s beloved. I would much rather wait and receive my blessings through my righteousness in Christ rather than walking outside of God’s will and receive the things of this world and miss heaven and eternity with The Most High and all those that have gone on before me.
The convenience of claiming the blessings of God and not committing your life to Him will one day cost more than you will be willing to pay. Satan does not play fair. He never has and he never will. Allow the Holy Spirit to convict you of any wrongdoing and repent. Then you will receive all that God has in store for you.

tial reaction was, “What? Are you crazy?”
He then explained that other inexperienced people had ridden a bull in an effort to raise money for a local non-profit. He assured me they would make every effort ensure my safety, but that I would still need to sign a waiver to release them from any and all liability in the event the bull decided to use me as a pin cushion.
The idea of doing something that insane had stoked. I also served on the board of directors for the Robeson County Special Olympics and this would be a grand opportunity to raise some money.
I told him I was all-in. I had two weeks to prepare.
I began searching for a local bull rider who could give a few pointers on what to do and what not to do. I found a fellow in the small town of Orrum, N.C. He laughed and told me he’d be happy to oblige. I think his name was Billy.
I made three trips to Orrum, each time spending about an hour riding a horse bareback. I held on by way of a bull rope around the horse’s midsection. My instructor informed me that I could either wrap the bull rope around my hand so that it would slip off easily if I were thrown from the bull,
or I could use what he called a “suicide knot,” which would not release if I was bucked off. The choice to not use the “suicide knot” was not hard at all.
I actually felt comfortable and confident the night of the rodeo. Not as scary as it seems, I thought. Then I saw the bull. He was a big fella, and I mean B-I-G. His name was Mickey Mouse. He was beige in color. One of his horns appeared to have been sawed off. The other was curved, about a foot long, and had a sharp point. He looked menacing. So much for the confidence and courage.
When the time came for my ride, I gathered all my courage and cowboyed up. I climbed over the back of the gate and straddled the steer’s back. Three or four guys tried to hold him still, but with no luck.
“You good?’ my instructor asked.
“Let’s do this,” I answered.
The next few moments are pretty much a blur. What I can tell you is that once the gate opened, Mickey Mouse came out bucking. Rather than heading straight for the center of the arena, he decided to make a quick right turn. As he bucked, his enor-
mous hindparts shifted to the left. I went right and held on for dear life. The next thing I remember is flying through the air and landing with a thud and a cloud of dust. Did I worry if I was hurt? Did I check to see if I was bleeding? No and no. I was up off the ground and running for the fence quicker than you can say John Wayne.
People have told me the flip I did off the back of the bull was rather impressive. I’ll have to take their word for it.
The ride lasted 1.8 seconds. That’s it. If you’re laughing, remember that’s 1.8 seconds longer than you’ve ever ridden a bulland I did raise close to $700 for the Special Olympics.
There is a framed picture of me riding Mickey Mouse hanging on the wall in my home office. My black cowboy hat is pulled on tight. I have one hand in a tight grip around the bull rope and the other flailing high in the air. I actually look like a real cowboy.
I’m indebted to photographer Steve Humbert for being quick enough to capture my big moment for posterity. That’s 1.8 seconds I’ll certainly hang on to forever.

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Cardiopulmonary Services has been granted a three-year term of accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission in echocardiography in the area of adult stress, adult transesophageal, and adult transthoracic.
This latest accreditation demonstrates the facility’s ongoing commitment to providing quality patient care in echocardiography.
“This reaccreditation affirms that our skilled clinicians meet the IAC’s standards for precise medical imaging essential to identifying heart disease so that it can be properly treated,” said of Carolina Pines CEO Bill Little. “It validates the hard work and commitment of our team members to apply best practices in patient care, an aspiration shared across all service lines at our hospital.”
Accreditation by the IAC means that Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Cardiopulmonary Services has undergone
an intensive application and review process and is found to be compliant with the published standards, thus demonstrating a

commitment to quality patient care in echocardiography. Comprised of a detailed self-evaluation followed by a thorough review by a panel of medical experts, the IAC accreditation process enables both the critical operational and technical components of the applicant facility to be assessed, including representative case studies and their corresponding final reports.
“Our Cardiopulmonary Services team at CPRMC is driven to deliver the best patient outcomes, and a first step in achieving success with heart disease is an accurate diagnosis,” said Dr. Mark Stellingworth, cardiologist and chief of Staff at CPRMC. “Being accredited in echocardiography is an affirmation that our diagnostic practices align with those deemed most appropriate by the industry.”
Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United
States. On average, one American dies every 34 seconds of cardiovascu-
lar disease ‒ disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Local landmarks - The Arcade
With the expansion of the railway system through South Carolina, more than just stopover towns began to sprout up.
Though it is true that once places like Florence, Patrick, McBee, Hartsville, and Pageland were birthed, the citizens saw to it that more than just tracks of steel kept their towns alive. Passengers arriving in town needed a place to stay, which led to the establishment of The Arcade Hotel in Hartsville and The Blakeney Hotel in Pageland.
When the Arcade Hotel first opened on Sept. 1, 1913, it boasted 42 rooms on its second and third floors. The project became official on August 7, 1912 when J.J. Lawton and Associates
obtained the hotel’s charter. Bennettsville architect and former English immigrant Ernest V. Richards designed the hotel. Richard’s L-shaped design resulted in the beautiful three-story brick building
The rooms of The Arcade were designed in the typical modest fashion of the day in that they were sparse in amenities while focused on guest comfort. Not all of the hotel’s 42 rooms were outfitted with restroom facilities, for example.
The hotel’s first floor abounded with chances for guests to unburden their financial load. Amenities such as a comfortable lobby and dining room were available for private parties, a kitchen, and a barbershop were also in
operation on the first floor of The Arcade. In a typical move for its day, The Arcade also offered sample rooms for everyone’s favorite traveling companion, the salesman. Sample rooms offered a location aside from someone’s front porch for traveling salesmen to comfortably set up their wares.
The hotel operated under the ownership of The Arcade Hotel Company until 1953. After 1953, the Hartsville Broadcasting Company assumed ownership until 1976 when The Arcade officially closed its doors.
The Arcade has since been reincarnated as SPC Credit Union.

FDTC partners with Adecco/Honda to host pair of hiring events
Florence-Darlington Technical College is partnering with Adecco Staffing and Honda of South Carolina to host two hiring events for their welding recruitment program on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.
The Adecco/Honda welding recruitment program trains men and women in a 64-hour Production MIG welding course that could ultimately lead to a job working within Honda’s Timmonsville manufacturing facility.
The first hiring event will take place at the Continuum in Lake City on Jan. 25. The second at the Southeastern Institute
of Manufacturing & Technology on Feb. 1. Each hiring event will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Florence Adult Education will be on hand to assess students during the hiring events for eligibility for GED by 23 funds that can help interested parties pay for tuition. Limited scholarships are available to eligible students.
GED by 2023 is an initiative through the S.C. Department of Education Adult Education Office designed to increase the number of GED completions by the year 2023. Through a partnership with the SC Technical College System, individu-
als who complete a GED or high school diploma through a SC Adult Education office are eligible to receive funds to cover the tuition and fees costs to attend a SC technical college.
Adecco will also be on site to assess individuals and help them apply to go to work as production welders at Honda in Timmonsville.
Anyone who plans to attend the hiring event is asked to please bring a valid identification card.
For more information about the course please contact FDTC Welding Instructor Danny Martin at (843) 413-2817, or danny.martin@fdtc.edu.
