FCSO deputies honored for valor

Four Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies have received the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association Valor Award for 2022. The award is presented to deputies “who perform actions above and beyond the call of duty, exhibit exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, and presence of mind, or act with unusual swiftness, regardless of their personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life.”

The FCSO recipients for the 2022 Valor Awards are Captain Rollins Rhodes, Corporal Tyler Urquhart, Corporal Christian Seal and Deputy Brandon Rowell. The awards were presented at the annual banquet hosted by the South Carolina Sheriffs Association in Columbia, on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Rhodes received the Valor Award for his actions on April 11, 2022 when he came to the aid of a choking victim and

applied a life-saving Heimlich Maneuver in a restaurant in Lake City. After dislodging the obstruction the victim began breathing on their own. Without the prompt response and lifesaving efforts from Rhodes, this situation could have had a much different result. Rhodes is the captain of the Narcotics Bureau.

West Florence soccer coach Billy Andrews was inducted into the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 20. Prior to Friday’s induction, only 16 others had been installed in the SCHSSCA Hall of Fame.

“I feel honored to receive this recognition,” Andrews said. “My life has been enriched through the experience of guiding the players on and off the field. When I first started coaching, I had no idea that it would lead to this. God's blessing, students, family, and good health made it possible.”

Andrews has been part of Florence 1 Schools for more than four decades, working as both a teacher and a coach. Last year, he was recognized at an F1S Board of Trustees meeting after achieving his 600th career win.

Andrews is only the second person to ever reach this milestone in South Carolina athletic

2022. While attempting to make a traffic stop for expired license tag, the suspect led Urquhart on a brief vehicle pursuit and then on a foot pursuit. At a point during the foot pursuit the suspect turned on Urquhart, pointed an AR pistol at him and threatened to shoot him.

Urquhart drew his duty weapon and fired two times, both rounds striking the suspect. Immediately after, Urquhart began life saving techniques including chest compression on the suspect until EMS arrived. Urquhart demonstrated extraordinary compassion and professionalism toward this subject who had just tried to kill him. This is the second Valor Award presented to Urquhart while a Florence County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Seal received the Valor Award for his actions on April 18, 2022 when responding to a motor vehicle accident on North Williston Road where the vehicle with several children came to rest in a body of

water. Seal immediately began life saving efforts on a two year old child who was not conscious or breathing, including chest compression. Seal continued those efforts even after EMS arrived and road with the child in the ambulance all the way to the hospital. While enroute to the hospital, the child regained a pulse and began breathing on its own.

Rowell received the valor award for his response to an active shooter incident that occurred on May 28, 2022 on Old River Road in Florence County. The suspect was firing randomly at passing vehicles with a high-powered rifle and two victims were struck by gunfire. With the active shooter situation still ongoing, Rowell responded to the vehicle with the wounded victims and immediately began to administer first aid to a seriously injured juvenile victim. He determined that the best course of action was to evacuate the juvenile in the back of his patrol vehicle to

waiting ambulances that had staged outside the immediate area of the active shooter.

After placing the juvenile into the hands of paramedics, Rowell returned to the incident scene to begin first aid on the adult victim by applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until an ambulance arrived to provide treatment. Rowell then returned to the active shooter scene to assist in the establishment of a perimeter where the active shooter was later taken into custody. Sadly, the juvenile victim did not survive, but the adult victim did. Rowell exhibited extraordinary valor in providing lifesaving aid to the victims of this crime.

Sheriff T.J. Joye and other members of the FCSO Command Staff were present for the presentation of these awards.

“None of our deputies begin their duty day expecting or even trying to earn an award,” said Joye. “They would tell you they were just doing their job the way they were trained, and their service to the community is their reward. But we are blessed in

this county to have extraordinary people work for us and they make me proud to be their sheriff.”

Jesus brings deliverance to the weary

Q: I am a social worker and a Christian. While I have to follow certain regulations in dealing with people, I want to help them know who can truly help them in their deep moments of depression, which is an epidemic. The world turns to drugs; I pray they will turn to Jesus. –S.W.

A: While battles rage around the world and storms gather in the human spirit, depression steals rest from our souls. This is an unfolding phenomenon that grips hearts with indescribable fear. Society is caught up in a powerful windstorm by

turning to drugs to calm their hearts and minds, many times with a doctor’s help. There is widespread anxiety in people’s hearts today. Volumes could be written on the problem of drug addiction. The Bible warns that these flights from reality bring no lasting satisfaction.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), anti-depressants are among the most pre-

scribed drugs in the United States. Sometimes called the “designer drug,” one physician stated, “It’s hard to believe that so many people are depressed, or that antidepressants are the answer.”

This doctor is wise, indeed. Drugs are not the answer to man’s troubled condition. There is only one answer to the travail of this present age, and it is found in the pages of

God’s Word, the Bible.

While it is important to be under the responsible care of physicians when battling emotional trauma, do not dismiss the peace of mind that comes from the Great Physician. Jesus brings deliverance to those who are weighed down.

The Bible encourages us to think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. It is good medicine for our minds and hearts (see Philippians 4:8).

AROUND THE STATE

Life in the left lane

Move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over little dog, the big ole dog is barreling down.

Our state legislature made it a priority to penalize those slowpokes who take up the left lane of travel on the highways and impede the flow of traffic.

Of course, they are right in that these drivers are a nuisance. Many seem to think the left lane is just as useful as the right lane. For a leisurely Sunday drive, perhaps. Truly, these drivers pose a danger to others and themselves. The left lane is for faster traffic and not for those going at or, most certainly, below the posted speed limit.

They won’t all readily admit it, but our lawmakers were a bit peeved that these left-lane hogs were impeding their ability to zip to Columbia during the legislative session. So, they came up with a law, the “slowpoke” bill, which they passed in 2021.

For a time, it seems, the new law worked. Slowpokes, when caught, could incur a whopping $25 fine not for speeding, but rather for going too dang slow.

Fast forward to the start of the 2023 session and, wouldn’t you know it, one of the first priorities for our lawmakers was not fixing crumbling roads. Instead, they said they noticed slowpokes are starting to drift back into the left lane of travel. The solution? Hike that fine from $25 to $100.

A Senate subcommittee gave it the full throttle and it’s likely speeding its way into law.

We do have to wonder, however, if state troopers will be a bit lenient when it comes to drivers hogging the left lane on Interstate 26 as it is in the throes of a massive overhaul. The lanes zig left, they zig right, the concrete barriers and reflective barrels are downright imposing and scary.

That said, the legislature might have hit on something. Hike the fine again and you have some dollars that can be poured into our bridges and highways safer.

And yet, our lawmakers are pushing to fund Interstate 73, a largely new construction project, to get our friends from Ohio and West Virginia to our coastal play lands faster. That’s great, but what about our existing roads, lawmakers?

Punxsutawney Phil’s big day

“There ain’t no party like a Punxsutawney party, cause a Punxsutawney party don’t stop.”

That’s what the good folks in the small town located in northwest Pennsylvania are singing this week as they welcome visitors from around the world who have come to celebrate the town’s most popular resident on his special day.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, around 3 a.m., the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club dressed in top hat and tails will pull the famous Punxsutawney Phil from a tree stump on a stage set up in the middle of a small village named Gobbler’s Knob. After placing Phil on a red carpet, the president of the club will announce to a crowd of thousands – and to the world – the rodent’s weather forecast. If Phil sees his shadow that means we should expect six more weeks of winter. No shadow and we can plan for an early spring.

For nearly 150 years, Feb. 2 has been celebrated as Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney. What began as a local observance in 1887 has evolved into a weeklong festival that draws on average about 30,000 visi-

tors to a town with 5,800 residents.

For those who might be intrigued to know the long history behind Groundhog Day (its origins go back well beyond 150 years) and the world’s most famous “ground squirrel,” here are some interesting facts:

• The beginning of February marks the halfway point between the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) and the spring equinox (when night and day are about the same length). Pagans would celebrate February 1 or 2 with a festival of light to mark the start of spring. According to Gaelic legend, if the goddess Cailleach wanted a long winter, she’d make the day bright so she’d have sunlight to gather more firewood. But if it was a cloudy or dreary day, she’d stay in because spring was on its way.

• Medieval Christians adapted the festival and handed out candles. This feast day, called Candle-

mas, falls 40 days after Christmas, marking the end of the period when Jewish tradition would have considered Jesus’ mother unclean after giving birth. She would have been allowed to worship in the temple again, so February 2 is also considered the day that baby Jesus would have been presented there for the first time.

• It was almost known as Badger Day. When the Germans settled in Pennsylvania they had a hard time finding badgers which they traditionally used on Candlemas Day, so they made the switch to the groundhog.

• The first official celebration of Groundhog Day took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1887. A group of businessmen made their way to Gobbler’s Knob and formed the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

• Punxsutawney Phil’s full name is Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.

• The average life span of groundhogs is only 10 years—but fans are adamant that there has been only one Punx-

sutawney Phil, who is kept alive with a special “groundhog elixir” given to him every summer that lengthens his life for seven more years. There’s no official word on how many groundhogs there have been.

• Phil has a wife named Phyllis and they both live in the town library at Gobbler’s Knob.

• Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction accuracy is actually not very good. He’s been right less that 35 percent of the time.

• Other weather forecasting groundhogs include Staten Island Chuck from New York City, Sir Walter Wally from Raleigh, N.C., General Beauregard Lee from Atlanta, Ga., and Jimmy the Groundhog from Sun Prairie, Wis. Texas started its tradition in 2010 and uses its state mammal, an armadillo, to predict the weather for Armadillo Day. The armadillo, named Bee Cave Bob, makes his weather prediction at the West Pole in Bee Cave, Texas. Happy Groundhog Day. Let’s hope Phil doesn’t see his shadow.

We need more tree scholars

The January-February 2023 issue of South Carolina Wildlife magazine ran my story on Edgefield County’s Curryton Magnolia. The old tree’s close to being a state record magnolia but a magnolia with more state record potential lives at Hampton Plantation in McClellanville. Of course. The name Hampton and big trees go together. They bring Harry Hampton to mind, a man known for his passion for natural resources and trees, big trees. He’s considered the father of our national park, Congaree.

Big trees fascinate us. Think of the redwoods. How does a South Carolina tree become a champion? That falls upon the Clemson University SC Champion Tree program. It determines the largest tree of its species according to a formula based on trunk circumference, tree height, and average crown spread. And who are the people who judge potential champions? Foresters. Consider them tree scholars.

As I worked on my magnolia story I found myself in familiar territory. The story formed an intersection of sorts for four connections: boyhood days spent roaming woods, my days as a writer at South Carolina DNR, my love for the outdoors, and my high regard for stewards of the environment.

As a boy I must have climbed 1,000 trees. Never fell out of one. All my life I’ve loved trees. It’s no sur-

prise I like nurseries, tree farms, and parks green with trees. Woods and waters made for a childhood playground, growing up in rural reaches as I did. Thanks to a week at a 4-H camp I learned to identify the trees of the South. Tree identification was my one foray into forestry, outside of writing features on trees. I never studied forestry formally but days come when I wish I had. It’d make me a better writer.

Masses of sunlight-loving, shady trees … where would we be without forests? In a world beset with environmental problems we need trees and tree scholars more than ever. We all should appreciate those who study, grow, nurture, and preserve forests, and we need to keep them coming our way.

If you know a young person interested in natural resources, an aspiring forester or environmentalist, tell them about Harry Hampton and tell them about the fund that honors him.

Tell them how the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, a private, non-profit corporation, partners with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to promote education, research, management, and

the administration of game and fish laws. Tell them how the fund and its partnership with DNR benefit South Carolina’s wildlife, marine, and other natural resources. And let them know the fund began simply, with words.

Harry Hampton worked as a writer for the State newspaper. He couldn’t know it at the time, but his “Woods and Waters” column would open doors to scholarships for young people interested in natural resources. It all began when his column became a crusade for South Carolina’s natural resources that led to speaking engagements around the state where he promoted sportsmanship and wise use of natural resources. It would do something vital years later: help open doors for young people interested in natural resources, among them forestry.

Tree scholars do good things and in Harry Hampton’s case, “scholarship,” serves two purposes. The Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund’s scholarships honor Hampton’s legacy. The fund’s scholarship program helps students further their education in a natural resources discipline such as wildlife biology, fisheries biology, forestry, marine science or environmental science to qualify.

March 23, the Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund will hold its annual Wildlife Ball, Wild Game Dinner, and Auction. Proceeds from the auction will help fund its scholarship program.

When you stop to consider how we depend on trees, you understand just how much we need tree scholars. And there’s another reason we need tree scholars. Forests are planet Earth’s lungs. They exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen, while cleaning the air and water, producing fruit, lumber, and giving wildlife and man homes. Hampton sure understood it and tree scholars do too.

Retirement planning more important than ever

With company pension plans becoming less prominent and shortfalls in Social Security more likely, planning for your retirement is now more important than ever. The fear of outliving one’s retirement savings is ever present as society is faced with longer life expectancies and a continuous rise in the cost of living. However, living the retirement you’ve always dreamed about can be a reality. All it takes is proper planning.

When planning for your senior years, the first thing to do is to think about what kind of life you would like to have. Some experts estimate that annual retirement needs could range anywhere from 70 to 100% of your current income.

Once you have established the amount you’ll need to live on during your retirement years, you can review your current savings and retirement benefits, including funds from company retirement plans and Social Security. You’ll also want to review your assets and liabilities and determine how much debt you’ll still have at retirement. After you’ve estimated what it would cost you to retire

MUSC Health Florence certified as International Baby-Friendly

MUSC Health Florence Medical Center has achieved the highly prestigious International BabyFriendly designation after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly USA, the organization responsible for bestowing this certification in the United States.

The distinguished honor demonstrates MUSC Health Florence Medical Center is adhering to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. These standards are built on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of evidence-based practices recommended by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's

Fund for optimal infant feeding support in the precious first days of a newborn’s life.

“We join a growing list of more than 20,000 BabyFriendly hospitals and birth centers throughout the world, 590 of which are in the United States,” said MUSC Health Florence Division Chief Executive Officer Jay Hinesley. “These facilities provide an environment that supports breastfeeding while respecting every woman’s right to make the best decision for herself and her family. Congratulations to our Women Services team on this prestigious designation.”

The positive health effects of breastfeeding are

well-documented and widely recognized by health authorities throughout the world. For example, the Surgeon General’s 2011 Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding stated that “Breast milk is uniquely suited to the human infant’s nutritional needs and is a live substance with unparalleled immunological and antiinflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses and diseases for both mothers and children.”

MUSC Health Florence Medical Center was also recently named the only hospital in South Carolina to be a 2022-23 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care by the U.S. News & World Report.
