Tacos

A couple of years ago my stepdaughter Julia worked as a hostess at King Jefe, a Mexican restaurant on Irby Street in Florence. She worked there only briefly, but one day she came home after a day of hostessing and told me that the restaurant had named a taco after me. She said it was called the “Al Pastor Bob.”

“Pastor Bob” is one of the many titles to which I answer. In addition to serv ing as editor of this news paper, I also serve as the pastor of two wonderful church congregations in Society Hill and Patrick. When Julia told me about the tacos at King Jefe, I felt curiously honored and obligated to at least give them a try. I did, and I must say they were quite tasty.

Last week I found out who the “Al Pastor Bob” taco is really named after. I am so very thankful I did.

Hundreds of family members, friends, and acquaintances filled the sanctuary at the Church at Sandhurst last Thursday to mourn, remember, honor, and celebrate the life and legacy of a good and faith ful man, the Rev. Robert A. “Pastor Bob” Norris. Pas tor Bob entered the church triumphant on Sept. 30 at the age of 84. A small part of the enormous legacy he leaves behind is the taco that bears his name.

spectacles, his signature black beret, and a conta giously friendly smile.

He pointed out the “Al Pastor Bob” tacos were made of ancho rubbed pork tenderloin, pineapple salsa, and shredded cab bage, which he said was “perfect for the colorful man that Bob was.”

“He’s probably serving them now in heaven, say ing they taste better if you eat them wearing a beret,” Richardson quipped.

“Many of us here expe rienced Pastor Bob’s love for God and people,” he said. “The gospel just seemed to flow from Pas tor Bob.”

made friends with this fel low Bob and invited him to speak in his place at Long Branch Church in Sumter.

It was at Long Branch that Pastor Bob received his first call as senior pastor.

in Florence, the Church at King Avenue.

Richardson closed his remarks by sharing a poem originally written by Walt Huntley titled, “God’s Hall of Fame."

COMPOSITION

The “real” Pastor Bob founded the Church at Sandhurst, which he referred to as “an imper fect church serving a per fect God.” He served the church as its senior pastor for 28 years. Originally from London, Ontario, Canada, his ministry of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ spanned six decades. He was a true man of God.

During Thursday’s memorial service, Adam Richardson, lead pastor at the Church at Sandhurst, shared how the missionminded Pastor Bob often spent more time in the community sharing God’s love than he did in his church office. He would stop by local restaurants so often that they antici pated with great delight a visit from the friendly guy who always wore round

Offering Pastor Bob’s eulogy was Bobby Richard son, a Sumter native, a for mer second baseman for the New York Yankees, and the great grandfather of the church’s current lead pastor. Richardson and Pastor Bob were close friends for many, many years.

The elder Richardson first met his longtime friend while visiting a church in Appomattox, Va., where Pastor Bob was on the staff. Richardson quickly

Pastor Bob was at Long Branch for a few years before returning to Canada to join in the ministry of Evangelist Barry Moore. He grew weary of the travel, and soon felt called to return to the pulpit in South Carolina. Through a friend he found out that Harmony Church in Sumter was looking for a pastor. He and his wife, Anne, would spend the next 15 years serving the Harmony Church congregation.

A few years after leav ing Harmony Church, Pas tor Bob was living and serving the Lord in Atlanta, Ga., when he was approached by several Flo rence businessmen, among them McLeod Health CEO Rob Colones, and asked if he had any interest in starting a church in Florence. He did, and the Church at Sandhurst opened its doors.

Pastor Bob would go on to found a second church

“The ultimate in base ball is the Hall of Fame,” began Richardson, “and Bob certainly would be in the hall of fame as far as life is concerned.”

He then shared Hunt ley’s poem.

“Your name may not appear down here in this world's Hall of Fame.

In fact, you may be so unknown that no one knows your name.

The trophies, the honor, the flashbulbs may pass you by, but if you love and serve the Lord, then I have news for you.

This Hall of Fame is only good as long as time shall be; But keep in mind, God's Hall of Fame is for eternity.

This crowd on earth they soon forget

But in God's Hall of Fame by just believing on His Son, inscribed you'll find your name.

I tell you, friend, I would n't trade my name, however small, that's written there beyond the stars in that Celestial Hall, for any famous name on earth, or glory that it shares; I'd rather be an unknown here and have my name up there.”

While I never met this spirit-filled man known for his heart for God and fash ionable headwear, I cer tainly wish I had. I suspect this fellow Bob would have become to me a valued friend and a true blessing, just as he was to so many others.

Side effects that may arise during breast cancer treatment

Navigating cancer treat ment is a challenge unlike any other. Medical profes sionals often advise cancer patients to lean on their sup port systems during treat ment, and heeding that advice can make it easier to manage the ups and downs that can arise when being treated for cancer.

In addition to building a strong and trustworthy sup port system, individuals diagnosed with breast can cer can study up on what to expect during treatment. Side effects of treatment may differ depending on the treatment plan devised by

women’s cancer care teams. Such plans are not uniform, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that treatments often include a combination of therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation. In addition, no two women are the same, so they may respond differently to similar treatment plans than others have in the past. Despite the differences between treatment plans and patients, Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that women may experience an assort ment of side effects, includ ing:

• Fatigue

• Headaches

• Pain and numbness: The pain and numbness associated with breast can cer treatment is potentially linked to peripheral neu ropathy, an umbrella term that the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says refers to the many conditions that involve damage to the peripheral nervous system. The NINDS notes that this con nection is due to certain chemotherapy drugs and not all patients will develop the pain and numbness associated with peripheral

neuropathy.

• Dental issues: Among the potential dental issues that can arise during breast cancer treatment are mucositis (severe inflamma tion of the mouth), an increased risk for oral infec tions, difficulty swallowing, and pain that feels like a sig nificant toothache, among others.

• Lymphedema: Lym phedema is swelling in an arm or leg that the Mayo Clinic notes can be caused by cancer treatments that remove or damage the lymph nodes.

• Musculoskeletal symp

Family history increases risk for breast cancer

Millions of people across the globe will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. In fact, only certain skin can cers affect more women than breast cancer within the United States and Canada.

The World Cancer Research Fund International says breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe. Belgium, The Nether lands and Luxembourg had the highest number of breast cancer cases in 2020, while Barbados and Fiji had the greatest number of deaths attributed to the disease. Some of these high case numbers may be attrib uted to women with family histories of breast cancer — something that increases risk significantly.

BreastCancer.org indi

cates that women with close relatives who have had breast cancer, such as sis ters, mothers or grandmoth ers, are at considerably higher risk of developing breast cancer themselves. Also, breast cancer may occur at a younger age in women with family histories of the disease.

Understanding breast cancer risk is vital for women’s health. The follow ing breakdown, courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can help women from all back grounds understand their risk for breast cancer.

• Average risk: No firstor second-degree relatives with breast or ovarian can cer, or one second-degree female relative with breast cancer (in one breast only) diagnosed after age 50.

• Moderate risk: This is a somewhat higher risk that may not turn into breast can cer. It occurs when there is one or two first-degree or two second-degree female relatives with breast cancer (in one breast only), with both relatives diagnosed after age 50; otherwise, one or two first- or seconddegree relatives with high grade prostate cancer.

• Strong: Women with strong risks have much higher chances of develop ing breast cancer than the general population. Condi tions like having one or more first- or second-degree rela tives with breast cancer diagnosed at age 45 or younger, triple negative breast cancer, primary can cer of both breasts, and both breast and ovarian can cer in the same relative are

warning signs of increased risk.

It’s important for women with increased risk for breast cancer due to family history to discuss options with their doctors. More fre quent mammograms and other screening tests may be recommended, and screening at younger ages than the standard age also may be considered. Women who are at high risk may be urged to undergo genetic counseling and testing for hereditary breast and ovar ian cancer markers.

Breast cancer can be an especially scary prospect for women with family histories of the disease. By familiariz ing themselves with their risks for breast cancer, women can take the neces sary steps to protect their long-term health. TF22A367

toms: Issues such as myal gia and muscle stiffness have been reported in a high percentage of patients who underwent aromatase inhibitor therapy for breast cancer.

• Bone loss and osteo porosis

• Heart problems: Breastcancer.org indicates that various types of treat ment, including chemother apy and targeted therapies, have been found to affect the heart, blood vessels and immune system, potentially increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke and heart fail ure.

• New cancers • Cataracts

• Blood clots

• Absence of menstrual periods

• Menopausal symptoms

• Sexual difficulties: WebMD notes that a lack of sex drive, vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse are some of the sexual diffi culties that can arise during breast cancer treatment.

• Infertility • Concerns about mem ory loss and cognitive func tion, which is sometimes referred to as “chemo brain”

Side effects vary during breast cancer treatment. Some women may not experience anything more than minor issues during treatment. But women are urged to discuss side effects with their cancer care teams and seek guid ance about how to alleviate or overcome any symptoms that adversely affect their quality of life. TF22A373

Nuclear Plant to test sirens

The outdoor warning sirens around the Robinson Nuclear Plant will be tested between 1 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The 59 outdoor warning sirens within 10 miles of the Robinson Nuclear Plant will sound at full volume for three minutes. To ensure they are functioning properly, it may be necessary to test some sirens more than once. Test ing is performed in coopera tion with emergency officials in Chesterfield, Darlington and Lee counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens.

Because this is a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular pro gramming to broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. If there were ever a real emergency at the plant requiring the sirens to be sounded, local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the pub lic.

For more information about the outdoor warning sirens, residents can refer to information available at www.duke-energy.com/ NuclearEP.
