We may have started a new Christmas tradition in our home. For the second consecutive Christmas, everyone in our family gets four gifts. We have special tags that signify the four items – Want, Need, Wear, and Read.

All four are self-explanatory. The first, Want, is a surcee of sorts. Something you might not need, but really want. Most of us have lots of these. The second, Need, is normally something like underwear, socks or pajamas. Nothing to get overly excited about - we all have necessities.

Wear, of course, refers to some form of clothing or attire – anything from a cashmere scarf to a pair of top-dollar

kicks. This category is easy for women and quite problematic for us guys. Speaking for all mankind, I would say most of the masculine world hasn’t got a clue in terms of sizes for their partner’s clothing. And let’s avoid altogether the topic of fashion sense.

The fourth and final category, Read, is my personal favorite. It’s my sweet spot. Everybody’s getting something to read, whether they like it or

not. It will likely be a book, but it could be an e-book or even a magazine subscription. If you get a book, chances are there will be an inscription on the inside cover. I have tons of these, most of which were gifted to me by my grandmother who was the head librarian at the University of North Carolina for many, many years.

For all of those in search of a book to give as a gift this Christmas, here are three recently published books by local authors:

• Second Chronicles: The Irreverent Reverend Rides Again, by Dr. Joseph “Joe” A Baroody Jr. with Susan Kammeraad-Campbell.

Baroody is a pastoral counselor and an ordained Baptist minister in Florence. He has served as chaplain, minister, and counselor at hospitals and medical centers. He has been in private counseling practice since 2001.

“Rides Again” is the follow up to his first offering, “Chronicles of An Irreverent Reverend: What Goes Wrong Can Make You Better,” published in 2013 by Jogglingboard Press. In it, Baroody adds to his collection of quirky, but hilarious true-life stories.

Among the short stories found in “Rides Again” are “Bathroom Seminar,” in which the author describes getting his four-year-old granddaughter

ready for bed by going over proper bathroom etiquette; and “Grace,” a story about himself as teenager, an ill-fated attempt at a party while his parents were away, his first sermon, and a lesson on mercy and forgiveness.

Both books are available on Amazon.com and from other online bookstores. You can purchase either book locally at Hamilton House Antiques, Goosie Ganders Interiors and Gifts, and Pieces Boutique.

• Greenway Drive: Growing Up in Darlington, South Carolina, by Stanley Drawdy and Keith Carter.

Sadly, Drawdy did not live to see his book released by Christian Faith Publishing in late November. A longtime educator and athletics coach in Darlington and Florence counties, Drawdy died on Sept. 1 at the age of 68.

After graduating from Francis Marion University Drawdy became a science teacher and coach at St. Johns High School. He then moved to Hannah-Pamplico High School where he worked in many positions including athletic director, coach, teacher and assistant principal. He was also a professor for the United States Sports Academy and owner of Drawdy Properties.

The 242-page book draws on Drawdy’s memories of growing up in Darlington.

Among those offering reviews of the book are Wilbur Vaughan, a retired Darlington County School District administrator, and Ronnie Ward, a lifelong citizen and former mayor of Darlington.

“Thank you for a wonderful collection of memories from growing up in the 1950s and 1960s,” wrote Vaughn. “The Greenway Drive kids were unique in their creative ways to enjoy each other with the support of great parents. Whether or not you have connections to the young people who grew up on Greenway Drive, you will enjoy this book.”

“The best thing about Darlington, South Carolina, is its people,” stated Ward. “Greenway Drive is a factual account of the relationships and lifelong friendships created in one of its neighborhoods. This quality of life still exists in Darlington where people continue to work, play, and worship together.”

“Greenway Drive: Growing Up in Darlington, South Carolina” is available for purchase on amazon.com and from other online bookstores.

• Super Rivers, written and illustrated by Jerry Jayden Rivers III.

The author and illustrator, a 10-year-old who lives in Florence, was inspired to write a book that combined his favorite things: family, superheroes and faith. In his book, Rivers tells of a family that has superpowers and was created to defeat evil. He wants his readers to understand that everyone has the inner power to defeat evil. Rivers’ father is a pastor in Florence.

Super Rivers is available for purchase on Amazon.com and from other online bookstores.

Carolina Pines earns ‘A’ safety grade

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center is proud to have once again received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group. This national distinction celebrates CPRMC’s achievements in protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and errors.

“We are proud to have once again received an ‘A’ for patient safety,” said Bill Little, CEO at Carolina Pines. “Our team works incredibly hard to provide the safest care for our patients and this grade is a measurable reflection of that commitment. Every patient should consider an ‘A’ hospital as their number one priority when making healthcare decisions, and we are proud to, once again, make the grade for our community.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization with a 10year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals

throughout the United States, based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”

To see Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center’s full grade details and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit Hospital-

SafetyGrade.org and follow The Leapfrog Group on Twitter, Facebook, and via its newsletter.

Survival makes us strong

It’s something about a battle that strikes fear in the hearts of humans. We think of what can transpire in the midst of it or if by chance we will come out maimed or defeated. This makes us fearful and apprehensive about moving forward.

During the times of the ancient kings, leaders were expected to take their armies into battle on the front line. Remember that’s what got King David in trou-

ble. He should have been in the front of the infantry rather than staying at home having allowed his flesh to take control.

We don’t have to go out looking for a battle. Battles have a way of finding us. So we must make up in our minds that when they come (and I do mean when), we are prepared to win. As believers, we have an advantage over those who choose not to believe.

According to 2 Chronicles 20:14-15, “Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite from Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the assembly. And he said, ‘Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.’”

When you know that it’s not actually you doing the fighting, you enjoy the victory that much more when it comes to pass. God promises that His people will come out of any battle He allows, for the better.

When the heat of the

battle subsides and you are declared an overcomer, you have come out stronger than when you went in. Again, it’s something about a battle that strengthens us during the process. Our faith grows and our perspective changes and we see things in a way that we didn’t see before the battle. It actually enriches our spiritual lives in a way that otherwise wouldn’t change us. The experience of the battle equips us and transforms us to be the survivor and conqueror that The Most High said we are in Romans 8:37: “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

Each and every one of us has been through a storm or a battle of some sort. Whether it was a financial setback or a cancer diagnosis, if you have survived it, then you are a winner and you are stronger because of it!

Duke Energy donates to non-profits

The Duke Energy Foundation recently awarded more than $7,000 to two feeding programs in Hartsville.

During the month of November, Duke Energy held an initiative to provide more than $325,000 to more than 40 feeding programs around the state of South Carolina. The Hartsville Soup

Kitchen and Carolinas Kids were two organizations selected for a surprise donation. Collectively, the two organizations were awarded $7,500.

Carolina’s Kids was

awarded a $2,500 grant for its efforts to feed students in the Darlington County School District and Hartsville Soup Kitchen was awarded $5,000 for its soup kitchen and food pantry efforts for

the greater Hartsville area.

This grant was a surprise and was not solicited by either organization. This “surcee” grant works to recognize the important gaps the agencies fill in the community they serve.

“If you grew up in South Carolina, you likely know that a surcee is a small and unexpected gift,” said Lauren Baker, community relations liaison for Duke Energy. “As we head into the holiday season, we hope this gift will help support the great people who work so hard yearround to help keep our neighbors from going hungry.”

In the Palmetto State, 1 in 10 people, including more than 150,000 children, face hunger. This disparity is pervasive, and food insecurity occurs in every county within the state.

night services begin at 7 p.m. Sunday School is at 10 a.m. Morning worship starts at 11 a.m. and Sunday night worship service will begin at 6 p.m. The church is located at Creekside Drive off Swiftcreek Road. For more information contact Brother Melton at 332-9479 or check them out on Facebook.

Hartsville Kiwanians award grants

The Hartsville Kiwanis Club awarded grants to three local Hartsville Schools.

Tiffani Roberts, guidance counselor at Southside Early Childhood Center, received a $200 grant for her program.

The money will go directly to purchasing books and materials for the Social Emotional Learning Through Books & Play Program. Kiwanian Craig Weber of Keller Williams Realty Palmetto presented the check to Roberts and the Principal Patricia Toney.

Christina Ewing, school counselor at Carolina Ele-

mentary, received a $500 grant from Hartsville Kiwanis for Carolina Elementary’s Book of the Month - Character Education Program. Each month, the book chosen will focus on a character trait that they want to instill in their students. Their goal is to award one student, from each of the 13 homerooms, who has embodied the character trait throughout the month with a copy of the month’s book.

Kiwanians Ken Hughes of Craig Weber, & Dave Carlton presented the check to Ewing and Carolina Elementary School Coordinating

Teacher Kourtney Grant.

Lindsay Henrich, STEAM Director at Thomas Hart Academy, was awarded a $500 grant for the purchase of a 3-D printer for the STEAM Lab. Students will get the chance to learn about this exciting technology and will also make items to sell for future fundraising opportunities, using the 3-D printer. Kiwanians Weber, Hughes and Murphy Monk of the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce presented the check to Henrich and Thomas Hart Academy Director of Fundraising and

Marketing Anna Tingen.

The money for grants from Hartsville Kiwanis Club is raised through the Club’s annual BBQ chicken plate fundraiser that happens in May each year. The mission of the Hartsville Kiwanis Club is to support children and education in the Hartsville community.

Do you know a teacher or program in Hartsville that you think should apply for a Hartsville Kiwanis Grant?

Have them email khartsvillegrantprogram@ gmail.com and ask for the grant application link.
