Darlington County Board of Education appoints two new administrators During its August meeting on Monday, the Darlington County Board of Education appointed J. Ervin McElveen as Director of Operations and Maintenance for the Darlington County School District and Tony Thomas as the district’s Director of

Transportation. “It’s always a positive move for our district when we are able to hire such exceptional talent from within our own ranks,” said Dr. Eddie Ingram, superintendent. “Mr. Thomas and Mr. McElveen both bring a

wealth of experience and skills to their new positions. I am confident under their leadership our transportation and operations departments will exceed expectations as we strive to become a 21st century district." McElveen will transition from the district’s Hartsvillearea bus supervisor, a position he has held since 2002, to director of operational and

maintenance related services. He has an extensive professional background in planning, executing and overseeing large-scale operations, including running a construction company from 1988 until 2002. Prior to that, he worked as a director of training and development for J.P. Stevens Company. A licensed educator, McElveen also taught carpentry in

DCSD. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Francis Marion University. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve as the Director of Operations and Maintenance in DCSD,” McElveen said. “My top priority will be working with all staff in the district to improve cleanliness and maintenance for all DCSD facilities. I am grateful for this new opportunity to serve the citizens of Darlington County.” Thomas, who spent the past six years as an assistant principal at North Hartsville Elementary School, will oversee the district’s system of school buses and drivers. He has been employed in DCSD since 2002, when he began his career as a seventh and eighth grade physical education teacher at Hartsville and Darlington junior high schools. From 2006 until

2010, he taught physical education for first through fifth grades at West Hartsville Elementary School, North Hartsville Elementary School and Thornwell School for the Arts. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Newberry College and a Master of Science in Education, specializing in Education Leadership, from Arkansas State University. “I am excited for the opportunity to direct such an essential portion of public education in Darlington County School District,” Thomas said. “Ensuring that our children have safe and dependable transportation to and from school is vital to their success in the classroom.” Both McElveen and Thomas will begin in their new positions immediately.

The good news is that Roco is still on the market and you can be his new best friend! Come by today and see what all the fuss is about. It's about Roco. The loving heart of God The heart of God is incomprehensible. His unending love for humankind cannot be measured or researched or even compared to any other emotion or feeling. God’s love can transform and redefine the fragments that are considered useless by some, but a glint of purpose in God’s eyes. When I sit and think about my own life and all the things I had done that could’ve turned God away from me, I only discover that He was beckoned by those very things that keeps us from approaching His throne. God’s heart is always tender and ready to engulf the wounded and rejected. His

rain. When we submerge ourselves in His love, we will see things and people differently. Our lives and outlook will be transformed because there is no way that you step into the love of God and not be changed. God’s love has Him anxiously waiting for us to wake up in the morning so that He can express that love in our lives. He waits patiently for our eyes to open and His first words to us are, “Good morning sunshine”. He watches over us while we are asleep like a doting father on the first night his newborn is home from delivery. Watching every movement, stretch and yawn and finally

City of Hartsville Business Builder Program information meetings After a successful close to the inaugural class, round two of the Business Builder Program will be launched this fall. Entrepreneurs who want to transform their ideas into established businesses face many challenges when turning their dreams into reality, not the least of which is financing. For those entrepreneurs who are facing difficulty obtaining traditional funding in creating or expanding an enterprise inside the City of Hartsville, a newly established program provides an opportunity for them to follow their dreams, including a chance to apply for up to $10,000 in lowinterest loans.

The City of Hartsville’s Business Builder Program, an initiative made possible with funding from the Byerly Foundation, offers those seeking to expand existing business, as well as startups, a chance at obtaining their seed financing through an education, certification and application process. The opportunities will begin on Thursday, August 25, with information sessions taking place at the Butler Heritage Center Auditorium, found at 1103 S. Sixth St. in Hartsville. Sessions will take place at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and participation in one of these is mandatory for those who are interested in apply-

ing for the program. Those who attend should come prepared for a brief interview to pitch their business idea. The program will include a 15 week Business Builder Certification class for business basics, to be held at Coker College. For those who complete this certification, the Business Builder Opportunity Loan Fund will give business developers a chance to apply for the lowinterest loan. For more information, or to obtain an application for the program, contact Brenda Kelley at 843.383.3009 or brenda.kelley@hartsvillesc. gov.

offs and championships. All district schools honor the Red Apple Pass cards at school-sponsored events. To use the pass, passholders must show a picture ID along with the Red Apple Pass at the gate or ticket office. They may also be asked to sign-in at that time. To be eligible, a person must be both a resident of Darlington County and at least 60 years of age or certified disabled. The school district’s Red Apple Pass program is one of the largest programs of its kind in South Carolina with more than 6,000 passes issued during the course of the program. The Red Apple Pass program is ongoing, with passes being non-expiring and nontransferable.

To apply, residents should bring a picture ID to the Office of Communication Services, 120 E. Smith Avenue in Darlington (across from the Darlington Post Office). Passes are issued throughout the year. For additional information, call the Office of Communications Services at 843-3982284.

RED FOXES CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 Wilfong to those returners, the defense on paper at least, should be counted on to carry the team early in the season. With new opponents, Lake City, South Florence, and Abbeville on the schedule, the challenge of the unknown along with inexperience should keep the coaches busy preparing the team. The rest of the nonconference schedule will have familiar foes, Camden, Conway, and Marlboro County. With realignment, our conference opponents will be newcomer Lugoff Elgin, along with Darlington, Lakewood, and Crestwood. The

quirk in the schedule will be having a “home” game at Newberry College when we play Abbeville this year. All in all, with the unknowns this year, it promises to be an exciting year for the fans. As the players gain experience, expectations should rise. Coach Calabrese stated his expectations are “work hard to get better each day” and “hoping to improve along the way.” After opening the season at Lake City on August 19th, the Foxes will have the home opener against South Florence on August 26th. Come out and support the Foxes. See you there.

HARTSVILLE RED FOXES 2016 Hartsville Rex Fox football preview

Fans are gearing up for another season of Red Fox football as summer comes to a close. Expectations, as usual, are high after a stretch of winning football seasons causes fans to expect nothing less than more of the same. Of course, like most coaches, Jeff Calabrese is taking a more cautious approach to the new season. The cumulative effect of graduating an average of 25 seniors the last 3 years can impact the experience factor this season. In talking to Coach Calabrese, the word “experience” came up quite often. Datavious Wilson, the defense must also replace important parts on defense. With 5 returning starters, DB Terrence Mack, DB Jaylen Evans, LB Zion Carroway, DL Karlos Witherspoon, DL DJ. Montgomery, the defense returns a few players with experience. With the addition of Carpenter and SEE
