Bloopers add humor to church bulletins ‘Hell’ to someone who doesn’t care much about you.

Following is a little humor from church bulletins or announcements made during church services: At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be ‘What Is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. This evening at 7 p.m. there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

Brenda Harrison Editor

The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water.’ The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’ Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say

Don’t let worry kill you off – let the church help. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done. Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again,’ giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him

their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5 p.m. – prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. Please use the back door.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the church basement Friday at 7 p.m. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. The associate minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday: ‘I Upped My Pledge Up Yours. Source: Facts

ule. Trash and yard debris will be collected every week, while recycling will be collected every other week. Additionally, glass will no longer be accepted as a recyclable material. Residents should place roll carts curbside by 7 a.m. on their assigned collection day to ensure pick up on the resident’s assigned day. Residents will be notified of the new changes to their collection day by a tag on their roll carts. Schedules are also available online at hartsvillesc.gov. Large roll carts are available to residents for recycling by contacting the City of Hartsville Environmental Services at 843-383-3019. These changes are a

result of extensive research and trial runs into the efficiency of a better collection route. Not only is this new route time and cost effective, it also allows City staff one extra day a week for maintenance of equipment and collection of waste should an unforeseen event occur, as was experienced with Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016. To make this transition easy for residents, the City has launched an initiative to streamline resident communications through a new trash collection service alert system. Residents will never miss a trash collection day again by signing up for this free alert service. Residents with or without smartphones

or computers can receive reminders about their collection day and alerts about schedule changes. The mobile app, called “Hartsville Sanitation Services,” is available for smartphone users. The free service will notify customers of trash pick-up schedules, recycling, and any changes in service. Users can customize their accounts with reminders through a phone call, text message, or email notifications. Additionally, users can print their collection schedule and download it onto most electronic calendars. Residents wanting to utilize the notification system without readily access to smartphones or computers can contact Environmental

Online student registration begins for Darlington County School District DARLINGTON--Parents with returning students in the Darlington County School District (DCSD) can avoid long registration lines at the school by taking advantage of online registration. The Registration Gateway, which opened Monday, July 17, will allow parents with returning students to complete registration online, significantly reducing time spent at the school. The Registration Gateway may

be found by visiting https:// sites.google.com/darlington.k12.sc.us/dcsdstudentregister/home or by selecting the “2017-2018 Student Registration” link under “For Parents” on the district’s website. Parents with students who will be new to the Darlington County School District (DCSD) must still register their child at the school during the week of July 31- Aug. 3. In order to use the online

registration, parents will need login credentials for each student. Parents can obtain login credentials by calling the registration hotline, which will be available July 24-27 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The number is 843-398-2236. Only returning students will be able to register through the Registration Gateway. Parents will still need to go to the school to show proof of residency and pay fees. New students must be registered at their school during the week of July 31–Aug. 3.

This, in collaboration with changes to collections services, will provide a higher quality of service to

our community.” In addition to this alert system, the Waste Wizard, available at www. hartsvillesc.gov/residents/p ublic-services/garbagerecycling-yard-debris/, allows users to type in any keywords and get disposal tips. The intuitive search tool helps the public determine what items go into the recycling bin or the trash can. For more information or questions, contact Environmental Services at 843-3833019.

SCDA offers comments on proposed robocall rule COLUMBIA--The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) has submitted comments to the Federal Communications Commission in support of their proposed rule targeting unlawful robocalls. The proposed rule aims to protect consumers by allowing telephone providers to block illegal robocalls at the network

level, before they reach the consumer. The request to block the call can either be made by the subscriber of a number to combat spoofing or by the provider after determining the telephone number is invalid, unallocated or unassigned. “Spoofing” occurs when a scammer uses technology to alter the caller ID to trick the consumer into thinking the call is from a particular

person, organization or place. Between January 1, 2015 and June 29, 2017 SCDCA’s Identity Theft Unit received over 2,500 scam reports from consumers regarding unsolicited telephone calls. A staggering 99% of these reports included imposter scams as the central issue. The success of this type of scam often hinges on the

use of caller ID spoofing technology. Arming the telephone industry with the ability to target “spoofed” numbers would dramatically decrease the number of these unwanted calls, and related scams. SCDCA’s comments also highlight the local impact of the rampant IRS imposter scam and the financial losses suffered by South Carolinians who fell

victim to imposter scams over the past two and a half years. Scam reports aid in keeping SCDCA informed on the latest schemes, helping us warn and educate South Carolina consumers. To report a scam or obtain a copy of SCDCA’s scam guide “Ditch the Pitch,” call 844835-5322 or visit www.consumer.sc.gov, then click Report a Scam.

About SCDCA The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs aims to protect consumers from inequities in the marketplace through advocacy, complaint mediation, enforcement and education. To file a complaint or get information on consumer issues, visit www.consumer.sc.gov or call toll-free, (800) 9221594.

Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August. 4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons. 5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated. 6. Learn the facts about lung cancer

One of the more prolific and leading causes of cancer-related deaths among both men and women, lung cancer continues to affect the lives of millions of people each year. The American Lung Association says lung cancer is the most common cancer across the globe, accounting for roughly 1.8 million new cases each year. Although more men than women are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, more women live with the disease. The rates of lung cancer diagnoses in women have risen 98 percent over the past 37 years. Despite the prevalence of lung cancer, some people remain in the dark about the particulars of this potentially

deadly disease. Misinformation may also lead some to believe they are safer than they truly are. The following are some lung cancer statistics that may help men and women gain a better understanding of this deadly yet often preventable disease.

• Lung cancer claims more lives than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined, says the American Cancer Society. • Survival rates among other cancers are higher than those of lung cancer. The five-year-survival rate of lung

cancer is only 16.8 percent, compared to 89.2 percent for breast cancer. • The National Cancer Institute says black men and women are more likely to develop and die from lung cancer than any other racial or ethnic group. The lung cancer incidence rate for black women is roughly equal to that of white women, despite the fact that black women smoke fewer cigarettes. • Lung cancer is not exclusive to smokers. The ACS says almost 80 percent of new lung cancer cases occur in former smokers or people who have never smoked. Current smokers account for 20 percent of lung cancer cases.

a cough that will not go away or chest pain may indicate the presence of the disease. • Early detection of lung cancer is crucial to survival. Receiving treatment as early as possible can lower the risks associated with the disease, including its likeliness to spread to other organs. Lung cancer remains a very serious threat. However, arming people with information can help those who may be at risk identify the ways to stay healthy and get the help or treatment they need. More information on lung cancer is available at www.lung.org. AC169353

• According to the Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, lung cancer is among the least funded cancers in terms of research dollars per death. • Lung cancer patients are routinely blamed for their condition, even though many cases of lung cancer are beyond their control — as is the case with non-smokingrelated lung cancer. Radon causes around 10 percent of lung cancer cases and occupational exposure to carcinogens around another 10 to 15 percent, says the American Lung Association. • Lung cancer may not produce early symptoms, but

How to turn a hobby into a career The end of the year tends to be a time to reflect on the previous 12 months. Many people are inspired to find a new career at the dawn of a new year. Some might find it possible to turn hobbies and other interests into ventures that can make money or even serve as new jobs. Earning a living doing something you love is the ultimate goal for many people. However, before a person tries to turn a hobby into a career, he or she first needs to analyze the situation and give such a momentous decision ample consideration. All hobbies cannot be adapted into lucrative businesses, especially those that are very niche-oriented. The following techniques can help people turn their hobbies

into careers. • Streamline and perfect your skill. Before trying to turn a hobby into a career, obtain further training or education, if necessary. Just because you’re qualified to do something as an amateur does not mean you can do it as a professional. Research if you need more schooling and pursue that schooling if you find you do. • Appeal to other hobbyists. Hobbyists tend to be quite enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Therefore, your first client base may very well be other hobbyists. Attend street fairs, carnivals and any other gatherings that tend to bring hobbyists together. This can help spread the word about your ventures

and open up your work to an extended network of likeminded individuals. • Listen to all feedback. Take criticism and other feedback from as many people as you can. This will help you to really fine tune and professionalize your hobby. Try brainstorming with people, remaining open to what others have to say about your potential business. • Start small and simple. Getting your feet wet in the business world takes an investment of time and money. It’s easy to follow the mentality “go big or go home.” But with the goal of turning a hobby into a career, you may want to start slowly — taking the bunny hills before skiing down the expertlevel slopes. Start selling items

or services in the community. Expand to a website. Keep track of your profit margin before you grow your business even further. You must be realistic in your ability to make money that can fully support you and your business. • Write about your interests. You may be able to make money through your hobby without performing the hobby. Become a freelance writer and share expertise through a blog or by contracting with newspapers and magazines. Sharing your expertise can be a lucrative and less costly way to turn a hobby into a new career. Turning a hobby into a profession may not result in instant success. But with dedication, the dream may come true. TF16C630
