Happy Mother’s Day to all moms! Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, so this week I want to share how I have been blessed as a mother. I became a mother, and consequently a grandmother, in a non-traditional way. My

first child, (whom the world refers to as a step-child) came into my life when I married her dad. I was 43 and she was 16. So, as I pledged my wedding vows, I instantly became the mother of a

Brenda Harrison Editor

teen-ager. Allison has been my daughter, my friend, my confidant, my heart for 23 years. We’ve been through joys and sorrows. She married in 2003 and began a stepmother to then three year-old Joseph, and I was blessed with a grandson, in addition to Joey, a son-in-law. Thirteen years ago we

lost her dad/my husband. But, as the Bible says, “joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5). Ten months later we were blessed with twin girls who have become two of the loves of my life. The girls are now 12 years old, and while they still enjoy spending time with this “Mema,” I know those days are numbered. As they get into the teen-age years, they will be busy and want to spend more time with friends. That’s okay. God has blessed me with another “daughter,” and “granddaughter.” Julia came into my life by

way of Brazil. She was an exchange student and lived with Beau and me for the school year of 1999-2000. She brought fun and joy, and a new culture into our lives at a time when we had become empty nesters. She came back into our home and our lives in 2003 to study at Francis Marion University. My husband was so proud to have her attend his alma mater. She was there with me, and for me, when Beau passed, and continued to share my home until she married a Florentine (Reeves) in 2007. Julia also captured my heart and has become my

family, as well. In 2013, she and her husband were blessed with Ana, and I got a new love – a beautiful, lively strawberry blonde granddaughter to explore the world with me. This summer another baby girl is expected with more blessings to come. As one group of granddaughters grow older, the Lord has gifted me with another to enjoy, play with and share my life. I truly love being a grandmother. May I wish all moms, and grandmoms, a Happy Mother’s Day. No matter how we got be a mom, we are truly blessed!

CHURCH HAPPENINGS Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church event

Invitation to Worship

Spring is here and it always makes me think of my mother. As long as I can remember, a couple days after Christmas, she would announce how many days it was until spring. She loved this time of year. Mom always said that spring represented “newness”, new leaves, new flowers, and new growth. She said it was a new beginning. Maybe you need a new beginning, too. Have you stopped going to church for one reason or another? Maybe you have never gone at all. Or maybe you go, but aren’t getting anything out of it. The way the world is getting today we don’t know what the future holds. Now is the time to make things right with God; to hear His word, believe it, and do what he tells us to do. It is not too late! I would like to extend an open invitation to you to visit us at the Hartsville Church of Christ. We are a small church and we would love to have you visit! We are located at 901 W. Pet of the Week Hi, it's me Rover! I was wondering if you could help me get out of this shelter? I promise I’m a good boy and I just love everyone I meet. I actually got brought here because I was following this guy around for a week. I thought he could be my new friend, but he didn’t think I could stay. Everyone at the shelter says I’d be a great companion though, and I have to say that I agree! The nice ladies at the shelter let me come out and show them how sweet I am today and they even let me meet a little fluffy dog. I thought she was really nice and I wanted her to be my friend too. They said I probably wouldn’t do so

Moore and Patel win annual art contest GSSM president delivers keynote address at March for Science

Keep Darlington County Beautiful announced recently the two winners of its annual art contest. Chloe Moore of Hartsville Middle School earned first place, and Divya Patel of Hartsville High School took home second. Renee Howle, an organizer with Keep Darlington County Beautiful, said the organization received more than 230 entries from 4K through 12th grade this year, more than she can recall ever receiving in the past. She said the two winners certainly deserved the recognition. “Their artwork represented well our message to the community of being litterfree,” she said. “We just appreciate Darlington County School District, the art teachers and the students for participating. We hold this each year, and we look forward to working with everyone again next year.” Students who choose to participate in the contest must create a piece of artwork using Palmetto Pride’s colors of blue and green as well as the organization’s slogan, which is “We all keep Darlington County clean in 2017.” The contest hopes to promote to the community the importance of not littering. Each year, Palmetto Pride funds the cost of gloves,

Renee Howle (left) and Gary White (right), both with Keep Darlington County Beautiful, present tshirts to Chloe Moore (left center) and Divya Patel (right center) after the two were named winners of the organization’s annual art contest. The shirt on the left depicts Moore’s first-place artwork.

Dr. Hector E. Flores, president of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM), delivered the keynote address at Columbia’s March for Science on Saturday, April 22, held at the Statehouse building in downtown Columbia. The event, attended by hundreds, was one of over 600 marches taking place globally on Earth Day, including a large one in Washington, D.C. In addition to Flores, the Columbia March for Science featured 15 other speakers including scien-

tists, religious and community leaders, and Columbia’s Poet Laureate. Flores’ keynote address, “The Meaning of Science,” summarized his journey as a biologist, affirmed the wonders and societal benefits of a strong science community, and emphasized the need for better communications across scientific, political and religious divides. He also stressed the responsibility of scientists as engaged citizens and able communicators. “We must take on this responsibility to inspire and

educate, seriously and with the same passion we apply to our experiments. This should start not in college, not in high school, but as early as kindergarten, when children have already started to ask questions and are ready to have their minds inducted into the discipline and the beauty of scientific discovery,” Flores said. vests, trash grabbers and trash bags when Keep Darlington County Beautiful participates in the Great American Cleanup throughout April, May and June. The organization printed the artwork of Moore and Patel on official t-shirts that will be distributed to volunteers participating in the Great American Cleanup. Additionally, Moore received a $50 gift card, and Patel received a $25 gift card. For more information about Keep Darlington County Beautiful or to volunteer, please call 843-3984800.

The importance of financial literacy If only money came with instructions. If it did, the route toward wealth would be clear and direct. Unfortunately, many people have inadequate financial knowledge, and for them, the path is more obscure. Are most people clueless about financial matters? That depends on what gauge you want to use to measure financial knowledge. The U.S. ranked fourteenth in Standard & Poor’s 2015 Global Financial Literacy Study, with just 57% of the country’s population estimated as financially literate. Obviously, the other 43% of Americans have some

John R. Coble III Coble Wealth Management

degree of financial understanding – but it is mixed with a degree of incomprehension. Witness some examples: *A recent LendU survey found that nearly half of college students carrying student loans thought those debts would eventually be forgiven if left unpaid. *This year, Fidelity Investments asked Americans the

following question in a multiple-choice quiz: “If you were able to set aside $50 each month for retirement, how much could that end up becoming 25 years from now, including interest, if it grew at the historical stock market average?” The correct answer was $40,000, but just 16% of respondents got it right. Another 27% guessed $15,000 (i.e., 50 x 12 x 25, as if interest was not a factor). *Only 42% of those quizzed by Fidelity knew that withdrawing 4-5% a year from retirement savings is commonly recommended. Fifteen percent of those older than 55 thought they would be “safe”

withdrawing 10-12% per year. *The S&P 500 has returned positively in 30 of the last 35 years. Just 8% of those answering Fidelity’s quiz guessed this. Apart from these examples, consider another one at the macro level. According to the latest National Financial Capability Study from FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority), only about a third of Americans younger than 40 understand the basic financial concepts of compounding, inflation, and risk diversification. Statistics aside, think about how a lack of financial acumen hurts people’s

chances to build or protect wealth. How about the employee who skips retirement plan enrollment at work, mistakenly thinking that a taxadvantaged retirement account is the same as a bank account? Or the small business owner puzzled by cash flow and profit-and-loss statements? Or the young borrower who fails to grasp the long-run consequences of only making interest payments on a credit card or loan? Financial professionals continually educate themselves. They stay on top of economic, tax law, and market developments. Investors should as well. Ten or twenty

years from now, you may find yourself in an entirely different place financially – who knows? The economy, the Wall Street climate, and even the investment opportunities before you could all differ from what you see today. If your financial knowledge is ten or twenty years out of date, you risk being at a disadvantage. Financial literacy is not about prevention, but instead about empowerment. The more you understand about personal finance, the more potential you give yourself to make smart money decisions.

DCSD to receive grants to expand summer reading camp

DARLINGTON--The Darlington County School District will again provide expanded and substantial reading education throughout the summer for students reading below grade level thanks to more than

$100,000 in grants. The grants will help fund the Jump Into Reading summer camp through June and July. The S.C. Department of Education will provide a $75,000 grant, and the TEACH Foundation will

devote $29,000. The state previously announced a grant for $37,000, but has since doubled its generous commitment. The camp will again boast partnerships with the Coker College Wiggins School of Education, the YMCA of the Upper Pee, the TEACH Foundation and Sonoco. During the camp, DCSD teachers and YMCA staff will receive professional devel-

Dr. Eddie Ingram, DCSD superintendent, thanked the district’s staff for working to secure grants and the organizations funding the valuable program. “Summer learning loss is a well-documented problem for students. We are excited to once again partner with Coker College, the YMCA and the TEACH Foundation to provide reading opportunities for students this summer. I’m very proud of our staff who took the initiative to secure these funds.” The grants fund an expansion of the Jump Into Reading summer camp to include transportation and longer hours, which led to increased

attendance last year. In years past, some students have shown as much as two grade levels of growth during the camp. “We know that children who do not read on grade level by the third grade are significantly more likely to leave high school without a diploma than proficient readers,” said Sharman Poplava, executive director of the TEACH Foundation. “TEACH believes the earlier we can promote good reading skills, the better chance we have for 3rd grade students to meet the reading level mark. Creating an additional learning environment for these students to succeed is paramount to their success.”
