You might be old if you remember rabbit ears Every so often I am reminded that some of the words and expressions we older folks have been acquainted with all of our lives can be perplexing to our youngsters. For instance, about a month ago, I was shopping with my sister-in-law at a mall in Kentucky. In the handbag section of a large department store she asked the young female clerk where to find a certain name-brand pocketbook. Clearly confused, the clerk queried “pocketbook?”

Brenda Harrison Editor

We explained that where we came from that was another name for purse or handbag. I don’t know if “pocketbook” is not used in that area of the country, or if she was just too young to have heard that word used. Following are a few other

words and phrases that might stump young people today: Sunshades, now called sunglasses. Hose pipe, an older name for a garden hose. What I knew as a “pound sign” is now a “hashtag.” Metal bottle caps. Years ago I was standing at a vending machine with bottled drinks and a kid pulled one out and didn’t have a clue on to how to open it. We used to call cheese and peanut butter crackers “Cheese Nabs.” I still do.

Penny candy is no longer available or nickel candy bars. As children, we went to the “picture show.” Now we go to the movies or cinema. When I was a child, my grandmother made “Chicken Perleau” (pronounced perlo). Today it is called “chicken bog.” How many kids would know what a TV antenna or rabbit ears are? Or, what about carbon paper? It was used to make copies of things, such as bills or receipts.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority donates book bags, supplies to DCSD students

The Epsilon Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA) recently gave a generous donation of book bags and supplies that will be distributed to students in the Darlington County School District. The group presented the donation to Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram, Associate Superintendent Dr. Bill Boyd and lead social worker Sue Cataen-Ingram. The group included school supplies, hats, mittens and kid-friendly nonperishable food items with the book bags. Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram thanked the members of AKA for supporting the education of Darlington County students.

“We are always appreciative of the continued support from our community organizations and citizens,” Ingram said. Carla Jefferson, an instructional technology coordinator for the district and an AKA member, helped organize the effort. “Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is committed to promoting the learning process by providing substantial support to students through AKA One Million Backpacks,” Jefferson said. “Through this initiative, Epsilon Chi Omega pledges to provide a minimum of 200 backpacks filled with supplies to the communities of Florence and Darlington in the next two years.”

Honor Society inducts 16 from Darlington County School District The Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT) held an induction ceremony recently for students and honorary faculty members accepted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). Students, family and other guests attended the event and a reception held afterward. NTHS is an organization that recognizes outstanding career and technical students. To qualify for membership, students must be eligible to be a program completer, which means they are enrolled in their third and fourth unit of a specific program area, have a minimum 3.25 GPA overall and 3.5 GPA in Career and Technology courses. When the saints go marching in The power of the believers is so tremendous and mind blowing. We haven’t a clue regarding the magnitude of the depth of this power and how it can be used against the powers of darkness. I am reminded of a scene in the movie “Beloved” produced and starring Oprah Winfrey. In this scene set in the early century, an evil and malevolent spirit slipped its way into the main character Sethe’s home and caused all kinds of chaos and hardship. The “church” ladies discerned and observed the intentions of this demonic force and how it had changed Sethe’s behavior and decided that enough was enough. They teamed up and made their way to Sethe’s home and confronted the evil that defied them. As they begin to pray and rebuke the slithering adamant spirit, the crescendo of their uplifted voices cause the entity to vanish and be no more. These women were confident and unafraid as should be all believers who know their God and the power of His might. When a believer walks into a room, the atmosphere should change and everything unlike God is threatened. We were sent to Earth to make a difference and not to be conformed to this world. Remember the seven

LESLIE B. WILLIAMSON sons of Sceva? In the book of Acts, chapter 19 and at verse 14, we see that these seven sons of the priest Sceva took a try at exorcising a demoniac. The demon spoke and said, “Jesus I know and Paul I know, but who are you”? The bible declares that the demoniac begins to attack those seven sons to the point of injury. These young men did not have the authority and power to overcome those demons, therefore there was no respect given. But the demons did refer to ones who did have their respect. They were the ones who had the power of a Believer and the God who empowers them. When the saint make their appearance everyone should recognize and see the power of God in action. Power and demonstration are evident and things will begin to change for better. Until next time! (c) 2/24/17 Lbw

Did you know? People frequently take human hair for granted, especially if they have it in abundance. While hair can help keep your head warm, there’s more to hair than what meets the eye. For a healthy individual with no hair diseases, hair is very strong with enormous tensile strength. In fact, human hair is about as strong as copper

wire of the same diameter. That means one strand of hair can support up to 100 grams in weight. Considering the average head of hair contains about 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair in all, the combined strength of human hair could feasibly support up to 12 tons, or the equivalent of two African elephants. PET OF THE WEEK--Trixie is a lovely charcoaljacketed lady who was extremely overwhelmed when she arrived at the shelter. Steady interaction with our volunteers has Trixie learning to trust and now she comes to the front of her kennel and dances when she gets invited for a walk. She is still timid and she needs to take things slow but she loves her walks. Her white-booted feet prance along on her walks and she lights up if another dog comes along too. Polite and gentle, Trixie just needs a little time and patience and she will be ready to give all of her love to her new person. Trixie weighs 47 lbs. and is a 5-6 year old bully mix. Codes and Licensing Officer continues efforts for community clean-up Recently, the City of Hartsville hired a new Codes and Licensing Officer to continue efforts that will keep Hartsville buildings safe and the community clean of trash and debris. Codes and Licensing Officer Jessica Lynch began her new role in Dec. of 2016. “I am looking forward to working with City staff, residents, and businesses on keeping Hartsville beautiful. Efforts cannot be carried by the City alone; the community must have an investment and must keep neighbors accountable”, says Lynch. The Codes and Licensing Officer ensures proper maintenance of private and commercial property including trash disposals, inoperative vehicles, and other code violations. In line with these responsibilities, Lynch will work with residents and businesses to resolve issues that impact the quality of life in Hartsville according to City adopted code.

JESSICA LYNCH “A strong codes enforcement leads to cleaner looking areas and in turn reduces crime. When people are educated and aware of City adopted code, they become better advocates of these codes.
