Vacation passes too quickly I don’t know if Murphy has a law about vacations, but if he doesn’t he should. I think everyone will agree that your week of vacation passes twice as fast as a week at work. Last week I spent my vacation at the beach. The time flew by like it always does when you’re relaxing and having fun. I love the beach, and the ocean, and even the sand. There is nothing more relaxing to me than sitting on the

Brenda Harrison Editor

beach, under the shade of an umbrella with my toes in the sand while reading a good book. I also enjoy walking along the beach picking up seashells, while searching

for shark’s teeth. It may sound like a waste of time to some, but for me it is therapy. I’m not thinking about anything else but looking for the elusive shiny black teeth. Last week I only found three, two tiny ones and one nice size specimen. Actually, I came to realize you don’t find shark’s teeth, they find you. I realized this late in the week when walking on the same path of sand leading to the ocean that I had walked upon every day.

Yet, that day a shark’s tooth lay on the thick sand in front of me waiting to be picked up. My discovery brought to mind the song I used to sing as a child with the lyric “I’m looking over a four-leaf cover I overlooked before...” How many shark’s teeth did I overlook last week I wonder. I was with my granddaughters at the beach and they joined me in picking up shells after high tide. Many were broken ones but we

didn’t care. We enjoyed examining the pastel like colors such as shades of pink, orange, purple and gray and we collected many over the course of the week. After our walk along the beach we ended up at the pier and rewarded ourselves with a cone of hand-dipped ice cream. The girls love to try catching a wave on their boogie boards while I stand back and cheer them on. And I love that they are old enough

that I could sit back and watch while the ocean waves tickled my toes and the soft sea breezes blew over me in the hot summer sun. Well, it was a great week to relax with family and friends at the beach, but I must admit, it is also good to come home. Besides, there’s always a good book to read!

tainer and keeper. The bowl of water I offered her was the living water. The water that we drink and it will never run dry. It is a constant flow of what we need. After partaking, she gave me a rub on my leg a few times as a way of saying “thanks” and Miss Kitty went on her way to be what she was created to be. When we come to the Lord in our desperate state, we have to recognize that in Him, Christ Jesus is all that we need. He is our bread our water and our safe place and

our high tower to run into. He is always accepting even at our worst because He knows that He is all that we need and if we run to Him and live for Him, He will be our supply. *Bonus feature…..In observance of Independence Day, my prayer for you all is that you remember the freedoms that you have been paid with a price that you didn’t have to pay. Every blessing ©6/30/16 LBW

Hide and seeking A few Sundays ago as we approached our church, I saw a small, black, furry speck near the front steps. I got out of the car and walked closer to see that it was just what I suspected; a tiny kitty that was resting in a patch of straw waiting for us to come in. She was so needy and desperate she came right to me with a gutsy cry and a welcome rub and purr as if to say, “what took you so long?” The more I talked to her, the louder her responses became. The moment we opened the doors of our church, she abandoned her soft, comfortable bed of straw and bolted inside the building. I giggled out loud because it was hard to believe how fast she was moving. She was hungry and thirsty and was waiting

LESLIE B. WILLIAMSON to be fed. Very seldom do we keep cat food stored away at church, but I looked around to see what she could possibly eat. On top of the refrigerator was a half loaf of bread and a few styrofoam cups. I took one slice of bread and tore it into small pieces and made a make-shift bowl of water for our new friend to enjoy.

Needless to say, she devoured the bread and finished off her meal with a big helping of clean water. She hung around for a while and expressed a heartfelt “Thank you” and we didn’t see her anymore after that. In this, I saw a perfect example of what God sees. That little kitty had obviously been abandoned by her mother and had to defend for herself. But somehow, unbeknownst to her, she found her way to the church. The moment she saw her help, she knew she had to take the chance to allow us to help her. Before we came to Christ we were much like that kitten, we were rejected and black with sin and shame. There is no hope and no certainty of even continual survival unless someone or

Letter to the Editor One year ago God reached down in Hartsville, South Carolina and said it’s time to go home. July 4 to most of us is freedom for our country, but to the Coward family it means freedom from pain. That’s what our Heavenly Father did when he called Dr. Paul Alderman Coward home to Heaven on July 4, 2015 at 9:11 a.m. It was in the twinkling of your eye! Jacob asked his daddy what was the best thing you

did in your life and he said, “Marrying my bride”, raised his hands toward Heaven and He was with the Lord. Beloved husband, daddy, and pediatrician. Forever

with the Lord. Now Jacob carries the torch for pediatrics. I, Mary, carry the torch as mother and father. Our children and grandchildren walk in His (Paul and the Lord) ways. Thank you for loving the Coward family. We are all so blessed to have come to Hartsville, SC. The Coward family: Dr. Paul and Mary Coward; Paul Jr. and Anna Coward; Danny and Patricia Coward; Tommy and Michelle Coward; Jacob and Xochitl Coward. Grandchildren: Paul Jr.’s children, Trey, James, and Abie Coward; Danny’s children, Abe, Danny, Samuel, Diya, Alex, Veronica, Colya, Shasha, Juliana, and Natasha Coward; Tommy’s children, Kylie and Conner Coward; Philip’s children, Philip Coward; Jacob’s children, Frances, Esther, and Jake Coward. something intervenes. Life can make you desperate for change and when you are serious about making a change, you will do what it takes to get that change. She made her way to the church which represents safety, shelter, acceptance and even Christ Himself. She ran into a place she had never been, but knew that it was in this place that she would find what she needed. As I crumbled the piece of bread, I saw Christ who is the bread of life, our sus-

Men and women process food differently. When dieting side by side, men appear to shed pounds easier and more quickly than women do. But is that really the case? According to Greg Caporaso, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Arizona University and assistant director of the Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics, diet affects men’s and women’s stomach microbes differently,

Excellent West facing deep water, natural

even when identical foods have been eaten. In addition, according to the paper “Lower sedentary metabolic rate in women compared with men,” R. Ferraro, S. Lillioja, A. M. Fontvieille, R. Rising, C. Bogardus, and E. Ravussin, affiliated with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and National Institutes of Health, Phoenix, and published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, on average, women’s total energy expenditure, which is the number of calories burned for metabolic needs,

including breathing, blood circulation, digestion and physical activity, is around 5 to 10 percent lower than men’s. The composition of the female body also differs from the composition of the male body. Men have more muscle mass and less body fat than women, which also can contribute to how easily men may be able to shed weight. Maintaining that muscle mass can push their metabolisms even further. According to the Poliquin Group, producers of unique weight training fitness programs and supplements, the following factors also come

into play. • At rest, women burn more glucose (sugars and starches) but less fat than men. • Men and women burn and store body fat differently. • Stress can inhibit fat loss in women. • Diet trends, including fasting and calorie restriction, tend to be more beneficial for men than women. To overcome these factors, women can work with their doctors, trainers and nutritionists to develop plans that take their unique metabolisms into consideration. WT165056

How to control ant infestations at home Few things elicit the ire of homeowners more quickly than insect infestations inside a home. Though many types of insects can find their way into a home, ants tend to be especially skilled at such invasions, causing many a headache among homeowners hoping to send their uninvited houseguests packing once and for all. Ants are attracted to food, water and shelter, making kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms ideal havens for these unwelcome critters to congregate. Such infestations can frustrate homeowners and make them uncomfortable in their own homes, but curtailing an ant infestation need not be so difficult. • Identify the point of entry. Upon discovering an ant infestation, homeowners should conduct a thorough inspection of their homes to identify where the ants are entering the home. Ants are

Once you discover an ant inside your home, follow the ant rather than killing it, as foraging ants are typically sent from a

colony located outside the home in search of moisture and food to bring back. • Set the bait. Once you have identified the point of entry, you can then set some indoor ant bait. Employing borax, a natural mineral found in many common

household products such as hand soaps and toothpastes, as their active ingredient, TERRO® Indoor Liquid Ant Baits use ants’ anatomy against them to curtail infestations. Adult worker ants cannot digest solid food, which they must bring back to the colony for additional processing. Liquid ant baits exploit this physiology by making it easy for ants to transport the liquid bait back to the rest of the colony, where more ants will ultimately succumb to the bait. In addition, as the worker ant carries the bait back to the colony, it’s also dropping a pheromone trail from the bait to the nest, ensuring that other ants will know where to find the bait, which they will hungrily seek out, making it easy for homeowners to eradicate the entire colony of ants. • Expect to see more ants after setting the bait. Baiting ants requires some

20 ways to live life to the fullest Time is a precious commodity, which is why many people try to embrace life and live it to the fullest. Although many people adopt the philosophy of living life to the fullest at a young age, this approach garnered greater attention thanks to a 2007 movie. Directed by Rob Reiner, “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman introduced a larger audience to setting goals and doing as much as possible to make those goals a reality. Freeman and Nicholson played two terminally ill men who set off to complete their personal to-do lists before their diseases catch up with them. The movie helped coin the term “bucket list,” which is a reference to things individuals want to do before they “kick the bucket.” Although the two main characters in the film are terminally ill, the idea of creating a bucket list is something anyone hoping to live a full, adventurous life can do. In fact, several bucket list organizations have sprung up, and other groups help make trips and other goals happen. People can even meet up with others who share the same desires and do them together. While anyone’s bucket list is a personal endeavor, there are some goals that are quite popular and desired by many. The following are some ideas to get a person started. 1. Throw a party on a rooftop in a bustling city or urban center. 2. Take a parent on his or her dream vacation.

3. Immerse yourself in the culture of a foreign country. 4. Go back to school to embark on a different career.

5. See the Northern Lights. 6. Become fluent in another language. 7. Go on safari and see

endangered animals in their natural habitats. 8. Take friends on a skydiving adventure. 9. Drive cross-country. 10. Tour every continent. 11. Do a professional photo shoot with you as the model. 12. Meet your favorite actor, athlete and/or author. 13. Be an extra in a movie. 14. Publish a book of any sort. 15. Participate in a festival, such as running with the bulls or Oktoberfest, in the festivals’ countries of origin. 16. Dive at the Great Barrier Reef. 17. Fly a plane. 18. Gather your entire family together for the biggest family reunion yet. 19. Try a new hobby that is out of your comfort zone. 20. Travel to the top of the tallest building in the world. TF15C727

patience on the part of homeowners, who should expect to see more ants appear in the hours after initially laying down the baits. That’s because the bait is intentionally attempting to draw ants out and attract as many of them as possible, so the more ants you see in the first couple of days after laying the bait, the more effective that bait will be at eradicating the colony. Especially large ant colonies may take up to 10 days to curtail, but smaller infestations can usually be controlled within 24 to 48 hours. • Address the outdoors as well. Nearly all ant infestations can be traced to a colony beneath the ground outside a home. Though ants prefer to invade the interior of a home where they can find food, water and shelter, that does not mean your home’s exterior is immune to such infestations, which can typically be found by searching for foraging trails that look like a line of traffic filled with ants. That line often leads directly into a home via windows, doors, exhaust vents, faucets, sliding glass doors, and along gutters and exterior walls. TERRO® Outdoor Liquid Ant Bait Stakes provide an effective and long-term solution to control outdoor ant

colonies. Just like the indoor baits, these stakes employ a specially formulated liquid ant bait solution that attracts and kills all common household ants, including Argentine ghost ants, little black, acrobat, and pavement ants, among others. The Liquid Ant Bait Stakes have a snap off bait activation system that keeps the bait fresh until ready to use, while a seethrough window makes it easy for homeowners to monitor the liquid ant bait so they know when it’s time to replace the stake. Simply place the stake along ant trails or any areas outside the home where ants have been observed. • Maintain an environment inside the home that’s uninviting to ants. Once baits have been set and ant colonies have been curtailed, homeowners can take steps to make their homes less inviting to ants in the future. Clean kitchens regularly, quickly cleaning up spills or crumbs, and use an exhaust fan in bathrooms and laundry rooms to cut down on the type of moisture that may prove attractive to thirsty ants.
