How many social apps do we need? Is it just me or are there others who don’t have the desire to communicate on every kind and type of modern technology. When is enough enough? I have a phone – actually two – a land line and a smart phone which accepts text messages. I have two email accounts – one for work and one for personal emails. Those offer five ways to get in touch with me and I don’t want to add any more.

Phones, email and text are more than enough for me. I also have a Facebook account and it offers Facebook Messenger which I do not use. One reason is my computer and tablet will not open the messages. I purposely did not install that app on my cell phone. I could probably find someone to help me with Facebook Messenger, but frankly I don’t need more accounts or ways to receive messages. It’s just too time consuming. Call me old school, but my favorite way to communicate is in person or by phone. I admit it is nice to

shoot someone an email when you need to send a lot of information or photos, but it’s not so great when you need a quick answer. The person may not be online. The same applies to me – I may not be online when someone sends something my way. Texting on the other hand is great for quick answers – most of the time. However, when you email or send a text, you don’t always know when, and if, the message is seen. When you see someone face to face, or call them by phone, you immediately know if you have their atten-

tion. When you do, you can ask all the questions you like without wearing out your typing or texting fingers. I don’t know all the popular social media and communication apps now available, but, according to businessinsider.com these are some of the best social networking apps: Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp (I do have this one, but only because I was told I had to have it), Vine, Secret, Tumblr, LinkedIn (have that too) TapTalk, Facebook Messenger and Pinterest (I do like this one.). Businessinsider.com lists

the following as the best productivity apps for getting things done: Humin which acts like your digital butler (I might need to check this out); Vesper to record your thoughts; Paper By Fifty Three wants to be your virtual sketchbook; Evernote, your online notebook; Mailbox which get your inbox down to zero (might need this one); Timeful learns your behaviors to help you change your habits; Sunrise is a calender app; and Quip is an alternative to Microsoft Office for iPad. Also, Day One, a classy app for keeping a journal; Slack revolutionizes team

communication by doing away with email; Clear is a simple, well-designed, to-do list to help you stay on track; Gmail is still one of the best ways to check email on the go; NotePlus, a notetaking app; GoodReader for reading virtually any file; and Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive are your best bets for storing files online. So, how many social apps are enough? I don’t know. Maybe apps are like tattoos – people who have tattoos never seem to have enough.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program returns The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is coming back to Darlington County. The goals of the program are to supplement the diets of low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious produce and to support South Carolina’s small farmers. The program allows low income senior citizens -- age 60 and older -- to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprocessed fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs. This year, the program that serves about 25,000 senior South Carolinians will be available in 41 counties in South Carolina between May and October 15. Participants are awarded $25 in the form of five checks of $5 to spend at authorized farmers’ markets and stands. Checks are distributed on a

Pick it up twice or sweep it under the rug

Very few people love to clean up. Now there are some exceptions but even a compulsive is moved by an urge and not due to the love of cleaning. I remember coming up as a teenager. Saturdays were the designated day for me to clean up what I didn’t do during the week. My mom and dad would most times let me sleep in until around 12:00. If I ever slept any later, I would suffer the wrath of my dad who would come into my room and lovingly lick my face until I got up screaming and protesting out of bed. After changing my bed linens and dusting, sweeping and mopping were the last things I had to do. I can remember halfheartedly sweeping the floor and missing the corners where debris and dust bunnies may have collected. In my thirteen year-old mind, I thought that I could just overlook those things and save them for another time because next Saturday would be here again before you know it and I can do it then!

LESLIE B. WILLIAMSON If I dropped something on the floor and if fell again, I hated stooping down to pick

it up over and over. My philosophy said if it fell again, it needs to stay there. Call me lazy but as adult believers we do the same things concerning our walk with the Lord. Sometimes we spend most of our time “sleeping”. We become dormant and unaware of what’s going on around us and sensitive to how we can pray and cause change to come about. We sometimes drop the things that God has put to our hands to do and refuse to go back and pick it up as many times as is necessary to

complete our God sent assignments. We’ll end up neglecting ourselves and as a result, we neglect the tasks that God expects us to carry out in His name. You may say to yourselves, “I’ll do it next time”. What if “next time” never comes? Then you have missed your opportunity. Seek the Lord that your walk may be clean before both God and man. It’s not that we can make things clean in our lives, that’s only a job that the Holy Spirit can do through

Six Hartsville High students sign athletic letters of intent Half a dozen Hartsville High School student-athletes finalized their commitments to compete at the collegiate level next year during an exciting ceremony in the school’s arena. The students will play four different sports at six different schools across the state: • Taylor Lawhon will play softball at Erskine College. • Hailey Tehrani will play

soccer at University of South Carolina Beaufort. • Allontate Ellerbe will wrestle for Limestone College. • Caleb Peach will play baseball with Coker College. • Cal Brunson will play baseball with Florence-Darlington Technical College. • Bailey Marshall will play baseball for University of South Carolina Union.

Attention Readers & Advertisers Deadline for our May 31st issue will be

5 P.M. THURSDAY, MAY 25TH

A huge crowd of fellow students and teachers attended the ceremony, as did plenty of family members and friends. Hartsville High School Athletics Director Phyllis Griggs commended the student-athletes for all of their work in the classroom that made the commitments possible.

the blood of Jesus Christ. Our job is to always make ourselves available and pliable in the hands of the Lord as he shows us what needs to be done. We have a problem with seeing ourselves unclean. Let’s take a quick look at Isaiah 6:1 where the writer says, “It was in the year that King Uzziah died and I saw the Lord. And His train filled the temple”. Then in verse 5 he says, “Woe is me for I am undone and a man of unclean lips”. Did you catch that? When Isaiah came into God's presence, he immediately saw himself in his unworthy state, but later on we see that the angel

takes one of the coals from the altar and places it on his lips and declares that his sins have been atoned for and forgiven. Believers, let us stop sweeping our dirt under the rug thinking that it will just go away. God wants to purge us from those things that weigh us down and keep us from doing His will. So if you have to, stoop down and pick up those things over and over until you get it right. Dig deep into the crevices and corners where it’s difficult to access. Remember it’s God that will do the cleaning, you just make yourselves available.

The rough consequences of not saving for retirement Saving for retirement may seem a thankless task. But you may be thanking yourself later. Putting away a percentage of one’s income, money that could be used for any number of bills or luxuries, is a sacrifice made in the present in order to avoid a larger trouble down the road. More than a quarter of seniors have no retirement savings. To be more specific, the Government Accountability Office says 29% of households headed by people 55 or older have no savings in a retirement account and no possibility of receiving an employer pension. Late last year, a PWC survey revealed that 37% of baby boomers had less than $50,000 in retirement assets. Just 24% of baby boomer households PWC polled had saved more than

$300,000 for their “second acts.” What kind of future awaits boomers who have saved less than $50,000 for retirement? It is hard to say exactly what may happen to them financially, but it is possible to make some educated guesses. They will likely try to work into their seventies. If their health permits, they will attempt to stay employed at least part time. Their earnings will presumably drop as they age.

They will probably rely heavily on Social Security and home equity. Social Security income by itself will prove insufficient to retire on, so they will look at selling their homes or arranging reverse mortgages to help fund their retirement (if they own homes to begin with). A fortunate few may have a third option: augmenting their inadequate retirement savings with proceeds from a business sale. Some small business owners save relatively little, believing that the money they get from selling their company will fund their future. That is not a given. It may take years for their business to sell, and it may sell for far less than they assume. Within a few years, they will need to accept a significantly lower quality of life.

Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center to be home court of Florence Wildcats

In partnership with the City of Hartsville Parks and Recreation department, the semi-pro basketball team, the Florence Wildcats have chosen Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center in Hartsville as their home court for this season. “We’re excited about hosting the Florence Wildcats for their home games this season. It’s something unique to offer the residents of this area to be able to come out and watch semipro basketball. The organization has been great to work with and I believe the fans are going to enjoy themselves coming out to watch this team,” says Craig Goodman, Director of City of Hartsville Parks and Recreation. The Wildcats’ slogan is “Community first, then basketball.” While they are look-

ing for a great season on the court, they want to be more than just a basketball team for the Pee Dee. “We want the entire Pee Dee to come out and support the team. The Wildcats are your pro basketball team. We want the children’s heroes to be accessible to them. Finally, the kids can look up to people that played on the same playgrounds as them and went to the same schools as them, and that gives them hope”, said Wildcats’ Director of Community and Public Relations, Nimai Garrett. The Florence Wildcats are mounted with players from around the Pee Dee area and will continue to grow that pathway to basketball for area players. Among those local players on the roster is Hartsville’s own Heyvis Jackson, a key player

in the success of the Wildcats. “Playing for the Wildcats is a great experience. I’ve met a great group of guys and it’s given me a chance to play the game I love again. It’s going to be a great feeling to play in the town where everything started for you with family and friends who haven’t seen me play since my senior year of high school. It’s going to be a great feeling,” says Heyvis Jackson, local player for the Florence Wildcats. The Florence Wildcats will play all their homes games this season at the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center located at 701 W. Washington St. in Hartsville. Visit the Florence Wildcats on Facebook for complete list of games and more information.

They may be forced to scale back creature comforts, live in tiny quarters, or relocate to a cheaper, less desirable area (assuming they can handle relocation costs). They may end up doing all of this. At some point, they may start spending down their assets. If they do enough of that, they will be eligible for Medicaid – a grim consolation in a sad process. Debts

may impel them to whittle away their net worth even faster. Then, they may need help from their children. Having little or no income besides Social Security, they will struggle mightily to keep up with the bills. If they own their homes free and clear, at least they will be able to stay in them; if not, they may choose the apartment of last

resort and move in with one of their adult children. Will this be your future? If you want to plan to avoid this financial nightmare, then you must save and invest for retirement. Save and invest as if your entire future depends on it, for it may. Saving and investing now could help you save your quality of life someday.

Students get hands-on experience at Boeing Forty-three of Darlington County’s brightest, most innovative problem-solvers met recently with officials from one of the world’s leading aerospace companies to take part in the “Boeing DreamLearners” program. The students from Hartsville High School, Darlington High School, Darlington County Institute of Technology, Darlington Middle School and Rosenwald Elementary/Middle School visited Boeing’s North Charleston facility to participate. Frank R. Hatten, Boeing strategy and integration education relations specialist, shared background information about the company before challenging the students to utilize the skills needed to gain and maintain employment at Boeing. Those skills included working on a team, managing time, being detail-oriented, showing adaptability and communicability, as well as working to solve a problem. Boeing divided the students into five member teams, requiring the use all of those skills. Each team consisted of a materials manager, a financial manager, an engineer, a mechanic and a pilot. Hatten encouraged the students to communicate and work as a team to build a paper airplane. Building and flying paper

airplanes did not seem so tough, at first. Students could collaborate, but could not complete someone else’s task, as that would result in team disqualification. Students were given just 15 minutes to choose between and construct one of five potential airplane designs. After the engineer selected the design, the materials manager had to select the appropriate weight paper and any other materials necessary to complete the task. The financial manager was responsible for preparing a financial statement. Teams had a project budget of $55,000, including compensation for team members. Designs and materials carried differentiated costs. Additional costs figured in for designs that did not pan out and any questions a team posed to an instructor. An over-budget project resulted in disqualification. The team

whose airplane flew the furthest distance during a test flight, without a disqualification, would be deemed the winner. Upon inspection, just four planes properly matched the design models. Four teams were immediately eliminated, and an additional team’s incomplete financial statement resulted in elimination. The three designs that had not been disqualified flew their planes. To everyone’s surprise, the team eliminated due to failure to submit an accurate financial statement had accurately built the furthest flying plane. Lessons learned during the exercise included the importance of complete and accurate work, managing deadlines and the value of effective communication and collaboration. Teachers reported an enriching experience through the trip and hope to carry more students in the future.

Thornwell School for the Arts hosts mother and daughter event Family and friends gathered recently at Thornwell School for the Arts (TSA) for the school’s annual Miss and Little Miss Heart of TSA mother and daughter pageant. Hosted by Hartsville Middle School, the pageant consisted of talent, formal wear and casual wear events as well as a question-andanswer session. TSA stu-

dents showcased artwork and vocal talents during the event. By night’s end, Alexsis Washington and parent Shakera Washington were crowned by last year’s winners Zykiyah McClain and parent Charleen GardnerMcClain. Miss Hartsville Catherine Wong and Miss Teen Hartsville Randi Gamble also assisted with the crowning. “I enjoyed my experi-

enced with the pageant,” Washington said. “Alexsis and I decided that we would participate in the pageant in honor of my grandmother, who passed away from cancer two years ago. Participating in this pageant was fun and allowed my daughter and I to have an experience of remembrance.” Evette McCaskill and fifth-grader Journei Sawyer were named first runners-up, while Cachet McCall and first-grader Tia McCall were named second runners-up. TSA Principal Dr. Lilkenya Jenkins praised those who participated and described the purpose of the event. “This pageant has once again provided us with the opportunity to recognize the beautiful relationship between mother and daughter,” Jenkins said. “Through this special event, we’re creating memories that our mothers and daughters will cherish for a lifetime.”
