FMU nursing program named a national Center of Excellence Francis Marion University’s Department of Nursing has been named as one of 15 new Centers of Excellence by the National League for Nursing, the nation’s premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. NLN Centers of Excellence exemplify the League’s core values of caring, integrity, diversity, and excellence, and faculty at designated institutions bear a responsibility to share their experience, knowledge, and wisdom for the benefit of everyone in nursing education. Schools and programs that receive NLN Center of Excellence recognition must meet high standards of excellence in nursing education. Each school is recognized for a particular trait that is critical to superb nursing education. FMU was recognized for “Promoting the Pedagogical Expertise of Faculty.” It’s one of just seven schools across the nation recognized in that area. The others in that category include Duke, Indiana, Connecticut, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-New Orleans. Dr. Ruth Wittmann-Price, dean of FMU’s School of Health Sciences and past chair of the Department of Nursing, says NLN recognition is a notable, but highly appropriate benchmark for FMU’s Department of Nursing. “We have a long-standing commitment to providing our students with the very best instruction, which means providing them with the very best faculty,” says Wittmann-Price. “That’s a neverending process, as any great nursing instructor will tell you. The professors must keep learning, keep improving, right along with their students.” Adds Dr. Karen Gittings, Chair

FMU Nursing Student Angelica McCoy and Nursing Faculty member Dr. Crystal Graham of the FMU Department of Nursing, “Our faculty consistently produces excellent research but they all consider themselves teachers first. That’s what makes FMU a special place for nursing education.” Dr. Beverly Malone, the CEO of the National League, says the real importance of NLN Centers of Excellence is to set examples for others to follow. “Centers of Excellence raise the bar for all nursing programs by serving as role models of visionary leadership and inclusive excellence that nurture the next generation of nurses,” says Malone. FMU is one of just 56 institutions nationally that has been recognized as a Center of Excellence

by the National League of Nursing. It’s one of just two nursing schools in South Carolina with that designation.

FMU will be formally recognized at the League’s annual Education Summit in Orlando later this fall.

Free dental care

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Dental Access Days (DAD), offering free dental care, will be held on Friday, Aug. 26 and Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Florence Civic Center The event will start at 6 a.m. each day and care will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis until all available treatment sessions have been filled. Dental care will be provided to adults only and limited to one procedure. Patients should expect long lines and wait times. Please be prepared by bringing the following items: water, snacks and a portable chair. Patients will be evaluated by a dental professional to determine the type of care that is most needed. Services provided includes X-rays, fillings, extractions, cleanings – no dentures. DAD is sponsored by the South Carolina Dental Association. FLT auditions The Florence Little Theatre will hold auditions for “To Kill A Mockingbird” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Registration will begin 30 minutes before auditions. Moonlight paddle Emerging Leaders Summer Institute graduation on Lynches River Lynches River County Park will host a guided moonlight canoe excursion on the Lynches Scenic River on Friday, Aug. 19, from 7-10 p.m. Participants will paddle from Lynches River County Park to the Hwy. 52 landing under the light of the full moon. All canoes and necessary equipment will be provided (i.e. paddles, life jackets). Minimum age/weight for participants is 10 years of age and at least 50 lbs. At least one person in each boat must be 18 years or older; two people per boat only (no exceptions).

McLeod Vascular Associate earns Vein Center accreditation Second in state of South Carolina to earn accreditation More than one half of Americans age 50 and older are affected by varicose veins. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the leg no longer function, causing blood to pool in the legs. In some cases, this condition progresses to a more serious form of venous disease called chronic venous insufficiency. Whether to relieve symptoms and/or improve appearance, treating varicose veins can be performed by vein centers that specialize in the evaluation and management of venous disorders. There are many factors that contribute to an accurate vein treatment and management. The training and experience of the vein specialist performing the procedure, the type of equipment used and the quality assessment metrics each facility is required to measure, all contribute to a positive patient outcome. Accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indicator of consistent quality care and a dedication to continuous improvement. McLeod Vascular Associates located in Florence, has been granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Vein Center in the area of Venous Treatment and Management. They are one of two vein centers in the state of South Carolina to achieve accreditation. Accreditation by IAC indicates that McLeod Vascular Associates has undergone an intensive application and review process and is found to be in compliance with the published standards, thus demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care in vein treatment and management. Comprised of a detailed self-evaluation followed by a thorough review by a panel of medical experts, the IAC accreditation process enables both the critical operational and technical components of the applicant facility to be assessed, including representative case studies and their corresponding final reports. The McLeod Vein Center specializes in the treatment of venous disease. The clinic includes a team of vascular physicians, nurses and specialized vascular technicians. This group can help relieve symptoms, improve cosmetic appearance and assist in avoiding more serious medical complications. Today’s cutting-edge technology offers safe and effective ways to treat venous disease, often without major surgery. Some of these in-office treatments include: closing the vein with radiofrequency energy or a laser through a simple needle access; injecting the veins with a medicine to close the vein down; or removing the diseased vein. At the McLeod Vein Center, the first step in the assessment process is a consultation with a vascular specialist. In most cases, this will include a simple, painless ultrasound examination to determine whether noninvasive or more advanced treatment options are needed for treating the venous disease. “IAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, and supported by national medical societies related to venous disorders, which include physicians, nurses and ultrasound technologists,” said Dr. Gabor Winkler, McLeod Vascular Surgeon. “We are proud of the dedication and work our team has accomplished to achieve accreditation status. Patients have the comfort of knowing when they schedule their procedure with the McLeod Vein Center our accreditation assures the quality care they will receive.”

What does Congress need? Your attention By Lee H. Hamilton Now that the conventions are over, I know that all eyes are on the fall presidential campaign. But I’m going to ask you to shift your focus a bit, to Congress. Don’t do it as a favor to me. Do it as a favor to the country. Congress is in the midst of a seven-week break. Its members left Washington in mid-July; they’ll be back after Labor Day. They did manage to do a few things, like pass legislation providing resources for combating the heroin and opioid crisis. But what they left undone is astonishing. They departed without dealing with a $1.1 billion measure to combat the Zika virus. They didn’t take up immigration or tax reform or gun legislation. They left behind a pile of spending bills, which means they’ll have about four weeks once they return to figure out how to keep the government operating. Yet again. We’re all tired of this. I don’t think a day goes by when someone doesn’t ask me, “What can we do about it?” So let me tell you. First, the system can work. What we’ve seen in recent years on Capitol Hill does not need to be the future. But it takes skill to forge consensus, make tradeoffs, assuage egos, and accommodate the vastly different points of view that are inevitable in a diverse nation. And it takes determination to overcome the inevitable setbacks and stumbling blocks in order to govern. The problem is, Congress has shown virtually no interest in this. Its members are very good at attacking political opponents, and not so adept at governing. So what kind of qualities would produce a more productive body? Simply put, members who have a sense of responsibility to the country and to the institution envisioned by our Founders; who understand their special role in making Congress an effective institution; who cooperate across the aisle – not merely in rhetoric, or when they’re standing in front of the cameras, but also when they’re drafting legislation; who can construct a bill and get it passed; who know how to legislate in order to effect change, not merely score political points; who want to safeguard Congress’s role as a coequal branch of government, not pass power to the President, the Fed, or the bureaucracy. Many current members of Congress have never seen these qualities in action, but the committee rooms and chambers they inhabit certainly have. Sam Rayburn of Texas brought rural electrification into being and transformed the lives of millions. George Fallon of Maryland shaped the interstate highway system, which in one way or another has affected every American life. Democrat Emanuel Celler and Republican William McCullough brought civil rights legislation to the country. Edith Green of Oregon was the mother of Title IX. Talented legislators – Carl Albert, Mike Mansfield, Barber Conable, Louis Stokes, and Lindy Boggs – were skilled at helping their colleagues see their way to compromise; they took pleasure in making Congress work. And it wasn’t just leaders. The success of Congress over the years has depended upon members who were not well known but who took their responsibilities seriously and believed the institution simply had to work. My point is, we’ve had a functional Congress before. That means we can produce one again. But I choose those words – “we” and “produce” – carefully. Making it happen depends on you. As a voter, you have to go beyond asking about the candidates’ positions on substantive issues. In addition, you have to judge whether a candidate has the will and the capability to reassert the role of Congress, to get legislation passed, and to work with colleagues who don’t necessarily agree with them. My fear is that, just as many contemporary members of Congress have never seen an effective Congress and show few signs of knowing how to make it work, perhaps voters have simply stopped expecting it. Voters have legitimate reasons to be discouraged about Congress. But they should remember the recent past, which shows that with the right kind of legislators, Congress can get things done – and they should begin to reject politicians who have proven again and again that they can’t get anything done. Declaration of South Carolina BBQ supremacy By Phil Noble Preamble – When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the culinary bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and preeminent station to which the Laws of BBQ and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to declare South Carolina’s BBQ Supremacy. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all BBQ is not created equal, that South Carolina BBQ is endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable Rights and Qualities, and that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of BBQ Perfection. That to secure this exalted position, The S.C. Barbeque Association was instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the BBQ Eaters and Judges. That whenever any form of challenge to South Carolina’s BBQ Supremacy becomes destructive of the ends of honesty and good eating, it is the Right of the BBQ-eating People of South Carolina to alter or to abolish our relationship with other BBQ pretenders, and to institute a new Declaration of South Carolina BBQ Supremacy thus laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affirm and maintain this South Carolina BBQ Supremacy. Voter Education Symposium to be held here A free Voter Education Symposium will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8, 7 p.m., at Poynor School Auditorium. The Voter Education Symposium is a nonpartisan event designed to educate citizens on the overall political system and national and state issues at the center of the 2016 election. State level representatives from the South Carolina Democratic and Republican parties will be on hand to present their respective party’s ideology on specifically selected national and state issues. The symposium will also showcase a discussion with Francis Marion University

Professor of Political Science and Chair, Department of Political Science & Geography David R. White, Ph.D. and Morris College Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Division of Social Sciences Jacob Butler Jr., Ph.D. on the overall political system. This abbreviated civics lesson will cover how state and federal government should work and how votes will actually count during a presidential election. “Though all politics is local, this is a high-stakes presidential election. I am hoping this event will help all registered voters understand the power they have with their vote. Before exercising

this power, voters need to be fully equipment with rhetoric free information, which is key for citizens to vote their convictions to effect change. I look forward to attending,” stated Rep. Terry Alexander. According to the South Carolina State Elections Commission, Florence County has 64 precincts with 84,600 registered voters as of May 16, 2016. Nature’s Alternative Herbs celebrates 20 years BY BRENDA HARRISON Editor of The News Journal Florence, S.C. A search for healing for her husband led Helen and Red Holladay to start a business featuring natural herbs, holistic medicines and health foods. Twenty years later, Nature’s Alternative Herbs is celebrating two decades of helping others find healing. When Red became ill more than 20 years ago, Helen started looking for ways to help him. Her search took her out of state to talk to a nurse at Duke University who was a licensed herbalist. What she learned inspired her to go back to school to become a licensed herbalist. She has continued her studies and to date has certifications in nutritional health, muscle testing, iridology, body systems, body works and practicum. The learning doesn’t stop, Helen said. She is continuously studying and learning, and her quest has taken her to many places, including California, and China where she studied with Chinese doctors at the Med-

Helen recalls. They were just selling natural products.” With her own medical background, Helen felt like she could do more. “Mama wanted to help people like she had been helped,” explained her daughter, Anna Horne, who

helps operate the store. A licensed cosmetologist and professional make-up artist, Anna brings her expertise to the business, Helen said, adding the store carries a line of natural skin-care products, such as Savannah Bee.

Promoting whole body healing, Nature’s Alternative Herbs offers a wide variety of top quality lab-tested products for adults, children and pets. These include natural herbs, health food, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and animal supplements. Also, herbal teas, herbs for allergies, colds and digestion, homeopathic medicines, aromatherapy oils, cooking oils, natural protein powder, natural toothpaste and shampoos, along with some foods and snacks. Helen mentioned that some physicians at Hope Health, as well as others in town, send patients to her store. Helen has a Kaagan machine to increase the alkalinity in water. She sells gallon containers of alkaline water which she believes makes for a healthier body. Other services provided include foot detoxification to pull toxins out of the body through the feet. The sessions are $25 and are recommended once a week for four weeks. Also offered are body scans to customize individual herb programs. Since opening her natural

herb store, Helen says she has seen a lot of bodily conditions turned around and she has seen people healed. “Our main joy is seeing people happy and healthy again,” commented Anna. Mother and daughter say they have formed a lot of great relationships with customers who have become like family. “We’re just one big family here,” quipped Helen. In addition to a wide variety of products by Nature’s Sunshine, Now, and others, the pair gives lectures and seminars on natural herbs to businesses, churches, civic groups and garden clubs. McLeod Healthier You helps Glover family lead healthier lives Earl and Amy Glover believed it was a matter of perfect timing when they received their invitational letter to participate in the McLeod Healthier You Program. Both had put on weight over the years and tried unsuccessfully to take it off. They had hopes that this program was going to prove to make the difference for them. McLeod Healthier You is a population healthcare management program designed to give participants guidance in managing their chronic disease and navigating the healthcare system through the use of RN Care Managers. Care Managers meet regularly with participants to educate them on chronic disease management, setting goals, and reinforcing care plans established by primary care and/or specialists. Care Managers also serve to ease transitions if participants require higher levels of care such as emergency or inpatient admission. The Glovers first met with their Care Manager Melissa Page in November 2015. This initial meeting brought undiag-

amount of water I was drinking, eliminated added sugar from my diet, watched my portions at meals, and planned snack times so I was not starving between meals,” said Amy.

Since Amy began Healthier You she has lost 25 pounds, her blood pressure is back to normal, and she feels one hundred percent better. Earl’s motivator to make a change was an increase in his weight. He is also drinking more water, and he has learned to read food labels. In addition, Earl reports that he has discovered that Sweet ‘N Low does not taste that bad. For his occasional trip to the vending machine, he now looks for healthier options with protein to help carry him through the afternoon. To date, Earl has lost 15 pounds on his weight loss journey. The couple’s teenage son Alex has benefitted from their healthy lifestyle changes, too. Following his parents’ example he has increased his water intake, and is eating more fruit. Like his parents, Alex is also conscious of what and how much he eats. From an exercise perspective, the family has moved from a sedentary lifestyle to being more active. Amy loves to walk, and Earl stays active with yard

work. Alex burns his extra calories playing football for his high school. “We have learned a lot from Melissa about eating healthier and activity goals,” said Earl. “She has been a great life coach for all of us.” Earl is even sharing his new wealth of knowledge with his co-workers – making copies of the Healthier You handouts so they can also learn to live healthier. Earl has advice for anyone ready to make a change to a healthier lifestyle. “It is not as hard as I thought it would be. You do have to trade off certain things from your diet for healthier options. But, it is all about living better. You have to decide that this is the time to take care of yourself and do it.” Earl has been an accountant with McLeod Physician Associates for ten years. Amy is an Admissions Counselor with Carolina Academy in Lake City, where Alex will be entering the ninth grade this fall.

Cooks For Christ to host benefit for Stephen Hawkins Cooks for Christ will host a chicken bog benefit for 25year old Stephen Hawkins on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the West Florence Fire Station on Pine Needles Road. Stephen has Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening genetic disease. At this time, there is no cure for CF. Chicken bog plates will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinner will be served from 4 until 7 p.m. A bake sale will be held all day. The menu consists of chicken bog, green beans, slaw and bread. of Gerald Biscup of Florence. He was diagnosed with CF at two months old. He requires breathing treatments, medications to help him digest his food, medications to help him fight infections and some type of airway clearance to keep his lungs free from the thick mucus that is characteristic of CF. He has been on this regime since diagnosis. As he grew, he started requiring hospitalizations, for “tune-ups” and would be in the hospital on IV antibiotics for two weeks. He missed school because of the frequent hospitalizations and was on homebound from

fifth through twelfth grade. He graduated in 2009 with a 4.133 GPA. He also was able to complete some college classes, despite his CF. Unfortunately in August of 2015, Stephen’s disease began to progress to the point that he required more frequent hospitalizations and home IV antibiotics. In October 2015, doctors told him he would need a double lung transplant in order to survive. Because his lung functions were low, he required oxygen 24/7. His lung functions have been on a steady decline, causing him to require more oxygen, even at rest.

Stephen once enjoyed working out, playing golf, and fishing, but has had to give these activities up due to declining health. Stephen hopes one day to resume the things that he enjoyed prior to getting so sick and plans to go back to school at some point. He has been in and out of the hospital since October, being admitted every two to three weeks. Stephen and his mother recently relocated to Durham, NC, for his transplant at Duke. They were told to plan on being there for six months to a year. Stephen will be on numerous medications for the rest of

his life in order to prevent rejection. He also will be required to attend pulmonary rehab post-transplant and make frequent return visits to Duke once he goes home. Many of these medications and treatments are costly. Cooks for Christ is raising money to help with the many expenses this family has incurred, as well as ongoing medical treatments and travel expenses. Marcus Lattimore visits hospitalized children Marcus Lattimore, former USC Gamecock and San Francisco 49ers running back, visited patients of McLeod Children’s Hospital on Friday, Aug.12. A decorated running back for the University of South Carolina and a fourth-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers, Lattimore showed great strength and determination after suffering multiple knee injuries during his college career. Today, he focuses on teaching young athletes the importance of character both on and off the field.

Blood donations urgently needed The American Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a critical summer blood shortage. The summer months are among the most challenging times of years to collect enough blood and platelet donations to meet patient needs. Many regular donors delay giving while they take vacation and participate in summer activities. The need for blood doesn’t take a summer break though. Two summers ago, Kelly Griswold was involved in a life-threatening jet-ski accident while vacationing. She

was airlifted to a hospital and underwent three surgeries over the course of two days. Griswold, a blood donor prior to the accident, suddenly knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of blood donations. “Without the support of people that can give blood, the ones who have needed it would not be here today – myself included.” Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to give now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need. High school reunion leads to marriage

Anne Harrell Elliot of Florence and Gerald Raymond Kirby of Timmonsville were re-acquainted at their 50th high school reunion last fall and this summer they were married. They are 1965 graduates of Southside High School. Both were widows when they attended their high school reunion. Although they knew each other in school, they had never dated. “Always go to your high school reunion because you never know what will happen,” quipped Mrs. Kirby. The couple were married on July 9 at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church in Timmonsville. The Rev. Melvin Haas officiated the double-ring ceremony. A program of wedding music was presented by Pat Callahan, soloist, and Joyce Kimbrell, pianist. All of the couple’s children and grandchildren participated in the wedding. The bride’s sons-in-law, Pat Callahan and Joey Rogers, gave her away.

Her daughter, Kimberly Rogers, was her matron of honor. Bridal attendants were Dawn Callahan, daughter of the bride, Darla Sutton, groom’s daughter, and Crystal Kirby, groom’s daughter-inlaw. Jimmy Sims, the groom’s brother-inlaw, stood as best man. Groomsmen were Lee Kirby, Jason Kirby and Robert Kirby, sons of the groom, and Benjamin Sutton, groom’s son-in-law. Levi Kirby, the groom’s grandson, was ring bearer. Emma Rogers, the bride’s granddaughter, was flower girl. TKA students compete in Chicago The King’s Academy represented South Carolina at the National Judicial Competition, a mock trial contest in Chicago. After winning the spot in November at the state competition, the team of six high school students ranked 13th at the mock trials in early August. Almost 200 high school students attended the event in Chicago from all over the United States. The competition included two grueling days of trials. Judges based their reviews on individual performance in oratory skills, strategy, and prowess to use the law to your advantage. In November, at the state competition, The King’s Academy delegation won The Most Outstanding Attorney Team, therefore the chance to compete on the national level. The team

Pokémon Go Meet & Greet The Florence County Library System will host a Pokémon Go Meet and Greet on Sunday, Aug. 28, from 3-4 p.m. The Pokémon Go Meet and Greet will give participants a chance to swap tips and info, meet teammates, battle for library gym, crafts, register for door prizes, and games. Trinity-Byrnes welcomes two new staffers Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School announces the addition of two new staff members. Under the leadership of April Munn, Director of Admissions and Communications, Susan Krafft joins as Director of Institutional Advancement and Jordan Pupa will serve as Director of Marketing. Susan Krafft is an Arkansas native who moved to Florence in January of this year. Before relocating to South Carolina, she held multiple positions at the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce in event planning, finance, and most recently served as the Director of Leadership Fort Smith. Krafft has over 10 years of experience in development, fundraising, and event planning. Past employers include the American Red Cross, the Mercy Foundation, and the Fort Smith Area Community Foundation. Krafft met her husband Chris while working in Student Affairs at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. She holds a M.A. from the University of Tulsa and a B.A. from Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. The couple has two children; Aaron will be in 8th grade at TBCS and Rachel is in 4th grade at Lucy T. Davis Elementary. “Florence has made our family feel so welcome and I couldn’t be more excited to now be a part of the TrinityByrnes family. It is especially exciting for me to use my skills towards the advancement of TBCS when my son will be a student here as well. She graduated from Clemson University in December 2011. Pupa enjoys staying involved in the Hartsville community. She participated in the Dancing With The Stars of Darlington County dance competition this past year to benefit the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault. She will also be the events director this year for the Hartsville Young Professionals organization. “I’m glad I am able to continue working in an educational setting and taking on the new role as the Director of Marketing. Trinity-Byrnes offers students a one of a kind, challenging educational opportunity that they will not get elsewhere.
