New Soccer Complex now open BY BRENDA HARRISON Editor of The News Journal Florence, S.C. The Florence Soccer Complex officially opened last Thursday morning, Feb. 15, with a brief ceremony held at the site. The spacious 14-field complex designed by AECOM Engineering and constructed by D&L Sitework, is located near the intersection of I-95 and Highway 76 at 3701 West Palmetto Street on Soccer Way. Dr. Eddie Floyd of the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation spoke briefly on how the soccer complex came into being. He said it was the result of city, county, recreation department and foundation all working together. “When it comes to Florence we don’t have Democrats and Republicans – we have Florentines. Everybody works together,” said Dr. Floyd. “I wish we could send that to Washington,” he added to a hardy applause. Explaining the partnership in this project, he said that the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation donated 93 acres of property purchased from the Ed Young family for the soccer complex. The land is valued at $2.5 million. The Foundation then donated $6 million toward the field design and construction of the complex. Dr. Floyd added that the South Carolina Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department provided a $50,000 grant to assist with the project construction. The city also contributed to the project with an allocation of

It has also budgeted for staffing and materials to provide ongoing maintenance. Florence County Council participated in the project by funding the relocation of a portion of Twin Church Road and installing a new entrance road into the complex through $1,040,000 in proceeds from the county-wide one-cent Capital Sales Tax.

Dr. Floyd announced that the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation is providing additional funding for the design and construction of a Soccer Center to be built on the property in the future. The Foundation selected Collins & Almers to complete the design for the center. The architects’ drawing for the Soccer Center was on display near the podium. Mayor Stephen Wukela praised

the Foundation saying, “It’s hard to have friends as good as the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation.” The mayor noted that the new complex will provide playing fields for the local youth soccer program which is a cooperative effort between the City of Florence and the Florence Soccer Association. The complex officially began play with the first recreation league games on Feb. 17.

One lane on I-95 South at Lynches River to close for repairs The South Carolina Department of Transportation will close a lane on I-95 southbound at mile marker 147 over the Lynches River in Florence County on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The closing is necessary for the bridge deck rehabilitation proj-

ect. The single lane closure will remain in place continuously for 30 days while crews complete the work. The expected completion date is March 23, barring delays due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Over size-over weight trucks will be restricted to 11 foot wide loads. All vehicles exceeding 11 feet in width shall use the posted detour route. The posted detour route will be I-95 South to Exit 150 (SC 403 South) to Lynches River

You might not even know that you have money waiting for you.” Millions of dollars are transferred to the program annually by companies that cannot locate the owners. Gubernatorial candidates address Florence Democrats Democratic gubernatorial candidates Phil Noble and challenger Rep. James Smith both spoke to over100 attendees at the Florence County Democratic Convention on Tuesday night, Feb. 6, at the Poynor Adult Learning Center in Florence. “We have enormous potential as a state,” Noble said. “We can’t realize that potential, though, because we have a government in Columbia that’s corrupt and broken. It’s the same plantation politics state that has held us back. We don’t have to accept what we have now.” He stated his campaign is a big, bold message to them that their time is over, saying, “South Carolinians are ready for real reform in education, health care, environmental protection, and in creating a sustainable prosperity that works for all of us.” Noble said he will look to reinvent public education in South Carolina, but will start with government reform. Marguerite Willis, wife of former Florence Mayor Frank Willis, just recently announced her bid on Feb. 1 saying she would fight for equal rights and equal pay for women. “I promise that I will take my warrior self to the Governor’s mansion and I will not rest until the women of this state have equal pay and the same thing for men,” Willis said. “For years, I’ve gone around the state and preached the gospel of equality and financial freedom for women. Equal pay is the cornerstone of this.” The third Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Rep. James Smith of Columbia, was not able to attend but his wife, Kirkland, was his surrogate speaker. “While I can’t speak to you about all the issues, I can tell you that I do know James Smith,” she said. “He was a veteran and has been a great husband and father.” Rep. James Smith states on his website that his top priorities are reforming the education system, building an energy plan that works for the jobs of the future, and investing in building a higher quality of life for all SC citizens. The primary for both parties is on June 12 while the general election is Nov. 6.

The Florence Country Club was awarded the 2017 South Carolina Country Club of the Year by the South Carolina Golf Association at its January annual meeting. The award is bestowed on a club that best exemplifies a history of outstanding golf programs and championships. “We are certainly honored to be thought of so much by the S.C. Washington’s advice rejected by both parties By Harold Pease, Ph. D Avoiding national debt was one of George Washington’s greatest admonitions yet neither liberals nor conservatives have paid much attention to it. It would be well to reflect on his advice this President’s Day. The trillion dollar Republican proposal will raise overall spending caps by about $300 billion over the next two years and will make interest on the debt the largest growing part of the federal budget. This expenditure of the people’s hard-earned taxes purchases nothing – simply vanishes. This prompted Senator Rand Paul to say, “When the Democrats are in power, Republicans appear to be the conservative party. But when Republicans are in power, it seems there is no conservative party.” He added, “The dirty little secret is that, by and large, both parties don’t care about the debt.” We borrow “a million dollars every minute.” On Sept. 19, 1796, just prior to leaving the presidency, President George Washington issued his famous farewell address. He warned posterity of possible pitfalls that could undermine or destroy liberty. His warnings may well be timelier 222 years later as we near his birthday February 22. In strong terms he asked that we avoid debt. “As a very important source of strength and security cherish public credit… use it as sparingly as possible, avoiding occasion of expense… [Use the] time of peace, to discharge the debts which unavoidable wars may have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear.” Unavoidable wars? Today our national debt sits at over $20.5 trillion – the highest in our history. I once viewed a CNN clip, “How Much is a Trillion Dollars,” that showed a trillion dollars stacked atop one another the combined thickness going 68,000 miles into the sky – a third of the way to the moon. Applying this formula to our 20-plus trillion dollars debt would take us to the moon and back, $6 trillion, to the moon and back a second time, 12 trillion, to the moon and back a third time, 18 trillion, and 2/3rds of the way to the moon a fourth time. Obviously today neither party has taken Washington’s advice. Presently the debt per taxpayer is over $170,370. We are spending our way into oblivion (See USDebtClock.org real time). But Washington gave other unheeded advice as well. He pled that the nation kept religion and morality strong. He said: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports…. Let it simply be asked, where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.” The Founding Fathers never supported the notion of separation of religion and government – only the separation of an organization of religion from government. What would Washington say of the immorality that prevails today? But the warning about foreign aid was especially good. He told us that gift giving in foreign affairs is a good way to be universally hated. He said it placed us “in the condition of having given equivalents for nominal favors, and yet of being reproached with ingratitude for not giving more.” Today there is hardly a nation in the world that does not have its hand out and when, after once giving, the amount is reduced or terminated, we are hated all the more for it. He warned against the origin of “combinations and associations” whose intent was to suppress the desires of the majority in favor of the minority. He called them artificial power factions. What would he say of the influence of the Deep State in our government today or of the Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission or Bilderbergers? Would not this include Clinton’s foundation to pedal political influence for millions or Hillary’s rigging the DNC against Bernie Sanders or against Donald Trump with a fake dossier? Such factions, he said, “May answer popular ends and become potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government….” The antidote for this, Washington explained, was “to resist with care the spirit of innovation” upon basic constitutional principles or premises no matter how flowery, appealing or “specious the pretext.” Washington worried about posterity not holding their elected officials strictly to the limits imposed by the Constitution. He knew many would seek to undermine that document by twisting it to give power they could not acquire without the distortion. Sound familiar? He said: “But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.” Today much of what the federal government does is not even mentioned in the Constitution. But patriots are not likely to be popular, as for instance Rand Paul. Washington explained, “Real patriots, who may resist the intrigues of the favorite, are liable to become suspected and odious; while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.” One need not look far for the “tools and dupes” they seem to be everywhere and in both parties. Listing a few superlatives of our world If someone was to ask me what is the most visited city in the world, I would not guess Bangkok. However, the Thai capital became the first Asian city to top the 2017 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Bangkok edged out London, the previous No.1, with 20.2 million international visitors who generated an estimated $14.4 billion U.S. dollars. London was number two, followed by Paris and Singapore. What city has the longest life expectancy? According to the CIA, Monaco, the second smallest country in the world boasts the highest life expectancy, with citizens living an average of 89.73 years. Men in Monaco live an average 85.3 years, and women live longer to an average of 89 years. The state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work is Alaska with 4.3% compared to the national average of 1.3%. The next closest state, Vermont,

had 3.1% of its working force commute by foot. D.C. beats them all at 5.8%, but the District of Columbia is not technically a state. Today its metropolitan area is home to about 2.5 million people, and in 2008 it was named the Arab Capital of Culture. Jericho in the West Bank comes in at is number two, followed by Aleppo, Syria, which is believed to comprise the oldest human settlement. Why Congress might buy Trump’s food stamp reform plan By Thomas L. Knapp Politico reports that the Trump administration wants to partially replace “food stamps” with “a box of governmentpicked, nonperishable foods every month.” Under the plan, recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which these days are delivered as debit card balances rather than as physical coupons -- “stamps” -- would receive about half as much money to buy food with. The other half would be replaced by the “America’s Harvest Box,” stuffed with “100 percent U.S. grown and produced food” such as shelf-stable milk and canned goods. From the initial response, one might expect this plan to go nowhere. Its cost-cutting benefits are debatable (the US Department of Agriculture says it would save $129 billion over ten years, but they’re not including the cost of actually delivering the food). Grocers oppose it for the obvious reason that it

would reduce the amount of money flowing through their cash registers. Smaller-government types point out that it would entail a bigger USDA and that families are better judges of their own food needs than some box-packing bureaucrats. But it still might pass. Why? Because the purpose of “food stamps” is not what most people think it is. What is that purpose? No, it’s not to feed the poor. That’s a happy side effect and a convenient excuse. The real purpose of the program is to justify welfare checks to Big Agriculture. That’s where the program came from, starting during the New Deal, when US Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace proposed it as a bridge across “a gorge, with farm surpluses on one cliff and under-nourished city folks with outstretched hands on the other.” That’s why low-income households received “government cheese” in the 1980s when the federal government

got caught warehousing enormous quantities of dairy products it bought for the purpose of propping up milk prices. And that’s why SNAP remains the largest appropriation line in the “Farm Bill” that Congress passes every five years (the 2014 Farm Bill dedicated $756 billion to “food stamps and nutrition”). Good arguments against Trump’s proposal notwithstanding, the “America’s Harvest Box” would serve the program’s true purpose well in one particular respect: It would let government direct money to specific farm welfare queens in a way that can’t happen if SNAP recipients can buy whatever they want to eat using the debit card. If the dairy industry is the squeaky wheel this week, more milk and cheese goes into the box. Next week maybe it’s more cereal because the grain farmers hired a sharper lobbyist. And the week after that, more canned beef stew or ham after those industries make smartly

Why have we accepted these shootings as “normal” events in today’s society? l think desperate times call for desperate measures. Forget the typical arguments about the second amendment for a minute – what is for the good of America and our precious children? If the politicians from the top, the Congress and even local authorities will not act, to do something, we must demand it. Certainly, it will be difficult for some people to bend and accept the required action. There is too much at stake to ignore the problem for personal agendas. Before building a wall or a trillion dollar infrastructure program, let’s put metal detectors at all schools and staff the entry door with an armed guard. Not a walk around resource officer, but in addition to. Immediately ban the sales of assault type weapons without a special permit and background check. If you cannot protect your interests with a

handgun, shotgun or hunting rifle, you need to join the Army. Finally, perhaps the most important and painful next step is to get a handle on the mental status on potential active shooters. Just about every one of the past shooters have been people that everyone knew were “strange,” obviously dangerous or reported before. We must welcome reporting of suspicious people. That is people who have displayed behavioral problems, aggression, social media rants, etc. It must be handled by those in the most direct path of the possible conflict – first observer, family, local police, teacher, principal. This information must be confidentially communicated to the police. The report must be assessed and acted upon, either immediately, monitored or discarded. Yes, it is “Big Brother” and requires resources. It is for public safety and saving lives demand action. The time is now. Ken Curran, Florence

FSD1 School Board seeks input on search for superintendent The search for a new superintendent to lead the Florence One School District has begun, and the Florence One School Board seeks input from employees and the community to assist with the process. Community and staff engagement activities are planned for Feb. 20-22 and will allow employees and citizens in the Florence One community an opportunity to share feedback on the characteristics and skill set desired in the next superintendent. A team from BWP & Associates, the national search firm selected by the Florence One School Board to assist with the search process, will seek suggestions, answer questions, and explain the search process during scheduled meet-

ings and forums. “One of the main outcomes of this community engagement process will be the creation of a Leadership Profile which will identify the characteristics and skill set our next superintendent needs to be successful in our district and community,” said Barry Townsend, Chairman of the Florence One School Board. “This profile will assist the search team in its recruiting efforts and the Board in its selection process.” On Tuesday, Feb. 20, a public forum for the Florence One community will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in Poynor Auditorium located in the district at 301 S. Dargan St. This forum is open to anyone in the public who would

like to attend. An employee forum, open to all district employees, will also be held at Poynor on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 5 p.m. In addition, small group meetings will be conducted by search team consultants Feb. 20, 21, and 22 with established staff, parent, student, and community groups. The search team will utilize input collected from forums, the small group meetings, and interviews with school board members to draft a Leadership Profile of the next superintendent. The Board will work with the consultants to finalize and approve this profile, which will be used to both recruit and assess candidates.

In addition to community engagement meetings and forums, a community survey will be launched Feb. 20 on the district website www.fsd1.org and be open through March 6. Results of the survey will offer additional input collected during the search process. The community engagement process is designed to allow anyone in the Florence One community an opportunity to share feedback as the Board works to find the next leader for the district. “The Board encourages and appreciates any participation in these planned activities,” said Townsend.

Florence residents urged to learn more about offshore drilling Residents of South Carolina coastal counties are bringing their message about the negative impacts of offshore drilling to Florence County on Feb. 26. “We want the people of the Florence area to understand how damaging offshore drilling will be to the Pee Dee and coastal counties,” stressed Sandra Bundy, a real estate broker with offices in Murrells Inlet and Bennettsville. Bundy, a leader in the grassroots, citizens group Stop Offshore Drilling in the Atlantic (SODA), said Pee Dee area residents “who own or rent vacation properties on the coast have a lot at risk by industrialization of the

coastal areas. A massive spill, or even dayto-day leakage which always happens, environmental damage, or damage to the fishing industry means fewer tourists. And that equates to dollars lost, and a change in our way of life. “We are not just talking about oil rigs out in the ocean. The entire process needs a massive amount of land-based infrastructure,” Bundy said. “Do the people of Florence County want new pipelines going through their land? Memorial service conducted for six who died homeless

Library to present African American genealogy program

Six homeless individuals who lost their lives in the last two years while trying to survive on the streets in Florence were remembered at a memorial service on Feb. 14. The memorial service, “Hearts for the Homeless, A Day of Remembrance” was conducted at the Levy Community Center at noon. Candles were lit in memory of each individual. They were Nicholas Dargan who died 9/02/16, John Harrison who died 9/15/16, Leon Gray who died 4/21/17, Ruth Ann Santos who was hit by a train on 8/16/17, George McElveen, who died 2/20/17 and Bernard Thomas who died 2/5/15 after being hit by a UPS truck. The Rev. Chris Handley of First Presbyterian Church opened the memorial with prayer. Singers from Resurrection Outreach Ministry provided music. Brief comments were made by City Councilwoman Pat Gibson-Hye Moore. Lunch was served to community leaders, local homeless organization leaders and homeless individuals in attendance. At the conclusion of the memorial service, six heartshaped balloons containing the names of the deceased were released outdoors.

Meals on Wheels benefit set The Senior Citizens Association will host a barbecue benefit, March For Meals with Meals on Wheels, on Saturday, March 3. The march will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Barbecue plates may be picked up from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 600 Senior Way. The menu will include half barbecue chicken, yellow rice, potato salad, green beans and cake. Plates are $10. Proceeds will benefit SCA’s Meals On Wheels program. The Florence County Library System will celebrate Black History Month with a free African-American genealogy program on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a. m. Genealogy expert Wevonneda Minis will present “Digging Your Roots: Basic Research and Tips for Tracing African-American Ancestors.” Minis is a Charlestonbased researcher, speaker, and writer with 24 years of experience in genealogy. Her credentials include: President of the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors, board member of the South Carolina Archives and History Foundation, board member of The South Carolina Genealogical Society, and founder of Roots and Branches: An African-American Genealogy Project (www.gullahroots.com). Her concentration is AfricanAmerican and Caucasian families in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, the Bahamas, England, Scotland and the Republic of Guinea, West Africa.

During Saturday’s presentation Minis will focus on genealogy research methods and tracing AfricanAmerican and former slave-owning families. Space is limited and registration is required. He and dance partner Meggie Baker are perfecting their samba dance routine to the Temptation’s upbeat “I Can’t Get Next To You.” Robbie works at BB&T and Meggie is a lawyer employed with HopeHealth as Director of Corporate Compliance, Risk Management and Grants Administration. The two have known each other for a long time. Robbie claims he is not a dancer, but he and his wife enjoy shag dancing. He says he is happy to participate in this fund-raising event for The School Foundation because he grew up attending Florence schools and now he has a child attending Royall Elementary and another who will in the future.
