LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

W

e’ve got a little showing over the last couple of months in between school sports and activities and it’s been wonderful! I have always loved going to the shows with my family. I was blessed to have many of my family members competing at the shows with me over the years. My mom always competed and my dad was always present whether supporting or selling tack from the tack trailer he pulled around for years. Both sides of my family were involved in horses, so I had grandparents, aunts uncles and cousins showing, rooting me on and competing against me for the longest time. The best part was each weekend was like a family reunion. We would all park close together, sit around in lawn chairs and listen to stories from the past and usually make a stop somewhere on the way home together for supper.

I realize now looking back that I was very blessed! Most people who choose horse showing don’t have the support system I had and I regret that I took it for granted at the time. Most of my family has retired from showing and now it’s just myself, my husband and our kids hauling and making memories. This is still a very big blessing, and I’ll not take these moments for granted;) Until next month.......saddle up with your family.......and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Freeze Brands Two Nickles Looking to order a branding iron to freeze brand a few colts... We have not had the best luck with our current iron and I am thinking we don’t have the right metal for that bright white brand I’m looking for... Where have y’all had the best luck ordering freeze brands from? Any certain makers to stay away from? Our brand is super simple, so I don’t need anything fancy - just quality. TIA! 1DSoon h t t p : / / w w w. p i t t s b u r g f o u n d r y. com/#freeze-brands mruggles My freeze brand is made of brass..and to get the nice bright white the timing has to be just so......m streakysox Mine is brass and got it from L and H branding irons BamaCanChaser Mine is also brass, and like already mentioned, you’re timing has to be impeccable for a perfect white brand. We shave the hair as close as possible. Wipe with rubbing alcohol to get it clean. Then press the brand hard against them, gently rocking it up and down for 10 seconds. This is for older

horses. I’ve heard if branding horses younger than a year older their skin is thinner and you can only leave it on for about 7 seconds.

TheOldGrayMare This is where I got my brand from and am very pleased with it: http://flying45.com/

Murphy h t t p : / / w w w. p i t t s b u r g f o u n d r y. com/#freeze-brands This is where mine came from.

cheryl makofka Interesting I get the vets to do it and they leave it on for 45 seconds I was told stainless steel does the same as brads. I got one done for foals but haven’t used it yet.

kasaj2000 I have 2...a larger iron one and have used it for freezing and hot branding. My smaller one is brass for freezing. Timing is everything on a freeze brand reguardless of what is used for the iron. Two Nickles What size are your freeze brands? I assumed their was just a standard but am seeing several size options with L & H. mruggles Mines 2”......m FLITASTIC I freeze brand as a side job of sorts... I use liquid nitrogen ( Best predictable method) and Minimum 17 seconds to 24 seconds depending on color of the horse. I can’t imagine 7-10 seconds getting the job done. :)

dashnlotti Mine also came from Flying45. We haven’t actually gotten around to using it lol. Waiting until we have the whole barn’s teeth done. That way the ones that will need sedating will already be knocked out. I have a couple crazies I’m not chancing a botch job on haha. ropenrun Interesting comments on freeze branding. We have built irons and freeze branded since about 2001. Probably branded over 3000 head of horses and several hounds.. Our irons are built using 1/4” cold roll round stock steel. We experimented with brass, copper, stainless and settle in the cold roll steel for horse irons. There are many advantages to using a brand that you can see through rather than a solid piece of brass. We especially don’t

care to use brass irons when it’s a jaw brand. We brand with liq nitrogen and our average length of time to stay in a horse is 12-13 seconds. If it is a light grey or white horse we will stay in for about 30 seconds to kill color and growth follicle. There are some crucial steps and ways of doing it that make a huge difference. We get a lot of referrals from vets. uno-dos-tres! L and H branding irons The best there is! Horses or cattle. Murphy My colt brand is 3”. BamaCanChaser We use liquid nitrogen as well. All of the ones we have left on for 15-20 seconds have finished “bald” no white hair growth. Wonder if geography has anything to do with it? Weird!

MY DadDy Always Said... Champions are not the ones who always win races - champions are the ones who get out there and try. And try harder the next time. And even harder the next time. ‘Champion’ is a state of mind. They are devoted. They compete to best themselves as much if not more than they compete to best others. Champions are not just athletes. ~ Simon Sinek We’d love to hear what your Daddy Always said...Send’em in... thehorseresource@msn.com

2016 Nationals Newsletter

The 2016 IBRA National Finals proved to be another great finale to end our season. The week was full of fun and fast times. In case you missed the front page…. Chris Coffey did it again. Chris has won the IBRA National Finals more than any other member in our history of 16 years and he has made multiple horses National Champions. In the following pages, you will find results for Short Go Rounds of the Open, Youth, Masters and Adult. You will also find accompanying pictures. To see a complete list of results for the week. Please visit our website at www.IBRA.us. We will soon have all the pictures you see here and more on our website and Facebook page. We will also have the champions videos uploaded to the IBRA’s Facebook page so that you can relive the action or take a look in case you missed it. This year we had some changes to our show which most of you seemed to think was for the better. For the first time, ever, we allowed exhibitions in addition to open arena. We have had a ton of requests for exhibitions and we had a lot of our contestant’s take advantage of a pre-run trip or two in the pen. The new schedule that was introduced this year was in large part what allowed us to have the time for exhibitions. It also allowed us to conclude the short go’s earlier and have most everyone on the road to home by midafternoon on Saturday. As many of you know from all the post of Facebook we were able to help Indiana member Jimmy Bryant kick start his charity goals of raising $16,000 for two children in the Make A Wish Foundation. As your President, I could not be prouder to be part of an organization that helped raise $5,000 to get that campaign started. I don’t intend to ramble on in a long letter here. I’ll let the pictures and results do the talking. Before closing, I do want to send out some “Thanks”. First and foremost, thank you to each and every one of you for all of your support of the IBRA and the National Finals. Thank you to Carl and Cindy Harlan and Steve Jackson and all the crew at C Bar

Page 10

C Expo for hosting us in such a great facility, and as always providing top-notch service. Thank you to all of our barrel setters and grounds crew (Tommy Lynch, Billy Hatzman and Justin Stewart) for keeping things safe. Thank you to our office staff, Penny Barth, Debbie Owens, Bronson Barth, Brad Johnson, Dennis Miller and Linda Stapleton. Thank you to our announcers Pat Freels and Lenell Dean. Thank you to Pam Cline and Terri Archer in the merchandise booth. Thank you to Tammy Smith and everyone who helped us check in horses. Thank you to all of the vendors and our sponsors. Thank you to Amber Mostoller and Oxygen for sponsoring the show. Thank you to all of our Directors and Reps. Thank you to my wife Holly and family for putting up with me through all of the prep. Last but not least thank you God for allowing us to live in such a great country that allows us the opportunity to enjoy weeks like this with our loved ones (two and four legged). I’m sure that I have missed folks and I ask your forgiveness now and please know that it’s not because you are not appreciated. God Bless you all and wenhope to see you at the Thanksgiving Show in Lewisburg.

QUARTER HORSE RACING

“I liked her (Powerfull Stone) family,” said Cunningham, who is based out of Michigan and has competed in every year of Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana since its inception in 1997. “I ran her sister and really liked her. Plus, Miller’s (Sheri Miller) breeding program has been doing really well so we wanted to buy out of it.” Powerfull Stone had not raced since mid June. The break didn’t seem to faze her and Esqueda is very familiar with her. He has ridden her in all of her starts on the track and also assists Cunningham in the mornings. “She (Powerfull Stone) is good everywhere,” said Esqueda. “She is a nice horse to ride. Every time she’s been close. It was a nice race today.”

Powerfull Stone Wins $35,520 Speed Sale Stakes SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 12, 2016 – Powerfull Stone and Leading Quarter Horse Jockey Cesar Esqueda rallied home to win the fourth running of the $35,520 Speed Sale Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Friday, Aug. 12. The duo covered the 350-yard dash in a time of :17.254 seconds, marking the first career stakes win for Esqueda. Starting from post seven in the nine-horse lineup, Powerfull Stone broke alertly and was among the front runners from the start. The twoyear-old daughter of Brimmstone used the center of the track to find a winning path to the finish line, easily defeating her opponents by three-quarters of a length as the favorite of the field. Sheza Classy Bay and Berkley Packer finished second over Kids Bright Image and Leonel Bolanos for third.

Esqueda is in his second year riding at Indiana Grand. The Mexican-born jockey was among the track’s top three riders last season and recently moved into the lead in 2016. He has scored 17 wins total for 2016, earning a riding double Friday, Aug. 12. He also guided Edens Candy Lane to a win in the afternoon’s ninth race for Cunningham, who also scored a training double on the day. The Speed Sale Stakes leads into the third all Quarter Horse program in 2016 set for Saturday, Aug. 13. The 9-race card includes trials for the $75,000 Bob Woodard Memorial, the $100,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity and the $50,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby. All finals will be held Saturday, Aug. 27.

Powerfull Stone was making only her fourth career start for Tony Cunningham, who owns and trains the Indiana sired filly. Although she’s been close in every outing, she could never quite land the top spot in the end. “She’s (Powerfull Stone) been a little green in her previous starts,” said Cunningham, ranked second on the list of leading Quarter Horse trainers at Indiana Grand this season. “The first three times she was all over the track. We put blinkers on today and that seemed to really help her. She ran very well today.” Powerfull Stone paid $4.40, $3.00, $2.40 across the board. She increased her career bankroll to more than $30,000 for the win. The Speed Sale Stakes is a little unique in that all horses in the field must have been purchased either as a weanling or a yearling from the Speed Sale. Cunningham acquired Power-

over five trials attempted to qualify for the upcoming $100,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity set for Saturday, Aug. 27. Although Trainer Randy Smith dominated the trials, winning four of the five events, it was CB Come Fly With Me and Rolando Pina that earned the fastest time to advance to the final. Starting from post seven in the 10-horse field, it was a clean loading process and a clean break from the gate for everyone. CB Come Fly With Me made his presence known early, leading the pack through the sloppy track conditions nearly gate to wire for the win, posting a time of :17.570 seconds for the win. His dominance was well-documented, defeating the second place finisher, Tres Seis Delight and Cesar Esqueda, by two and one-half lengths at the finish line. Jess Jace and Berkley Packer brought home another qualifier for Smith. CB Come Fly With Me just missed the win in his last start in the $131,000 Jaguar Rocket Futurity. The freshman daughter of Desirio is now two for four in her brief career for owner-breeder Carolyn Bruce. CB Come Fly With Me paid $5.00, $4.20, $2.80 across the board as the race favorite. She is trained by Joe Davis, who has had an exceptional year at Indiana Grand in 2016 and currently ranked third in the standings with 15 wins. Other trial winners for the QHRAI SSA Futurity included WRs Whoseyourdaddy, Dnachrystalsfighter, Beach Zoomer, and DNA Dales Prospect, all trained by Indiana Grand’s leading trainer Randy Smith. All of the trial winners were ridden to victory by Berkley Packer with the exception of Beach Zoomer, who was ridden by Juan Galvan. Packer, who came into the evening in third place on the leading jockey roster, won five of the nine races to catapult himself into the top spot as the leading Quarter Horse jockey with 19 wins thus far. Rolando Pina had two wins on the evening to maintain his second place status on the leader board with 17 wins. Trainer Randy Smith earned seven wins, a new track record for most wins recorded in one night by a trainer of any breed at Indiana Grand. Qualifiers for the QHRAI SSA Futurity include the following horses, with jockey and time: CB Come Fly With Me (Rolando Pina, :17.570); Wrs Whoseyourdaddy (Berkley Packer, :17.962); Tres Seis Delight (Cesar Esqueda, :17.995); First Cucuy (Jose Davila, :18.029); Beach Zoomer (Juan Galvan, :18.058); Zoomin B Cartel (Berkley Packer, :18.128); HH Kentucky Krome (Harold Collins, :18.150); Jess Jace (Berkley Packer, :18.166); Dnachrystalsfighter (Berkley Packer, :18.189); and Cartels Justice Shanley Jackson, :18.212). In all Smith will saddle six in the QHRAI SSA Futurity final.

Coco Beach Part of Big Evening for Randy Smith SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 13, 2016 – Coco Beach was the fastest qualifier in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby trials Saturday, Aug. 13, but she was also part of a bigger picture. Trainer Randy Smith scored wins in seven of the nine races on the all-Quarter Horse racing card at Indiana Grand to set a new record for most wins recorded in one night by a trainer of any breed. After winning the first of two trials for the QHRAI SSA Derby with My Louisiana Rod, Smith was walking back to the winner’s circle in the second race of the night to greet Juan Galvan aboard Coco Beach, winners of the second trial. The three-year-old daughter of Escondido Beach, bred and owned by Sheri Miller, completed her journey in the 400-yard dash in a time of :20.007 to possess the fastest time of the 14 horses trying to qualify for the final. Coco Beach led the race the entire way, holding on at the end by a neck over stablemate Jumpn Chick and Berkley Packer.

Stinkin Rich Leads the Way to Bob Woodard Memorial Classic Final

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 13, 2016 – Two trials for the upcoming $75,000 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic were held Saturday, Aug. 13 during the third of six allQuarter Horse racing nights at Indiana Grand. Stinkin Rich and Rolando Pina won their trial in the fastest time, posting :19.839 seconds on the board for the 400yard dash. Starting from post six in the seven-horse lineup, Stinkin Rich had a good start and had his eye on the prize from the beginning. He was able to establish himself as the horse to catch over the sloppy track, and although several opponents made attempts to catch him late in the race, he prevailed, winning by three-quarters of a length. WH Design By Dash and Harold Collins finished second over Pistolpacking Pepsi and Jose Beltran for third. Owned by Carolyn Bruce, who also bred the grey One Famous Eagle gelding, Stinkin Rich recorded his fifth career win in 12 starts, but his first of the year in 2016. The four-year-old was a standout two-year-old in the state of Indiana before experiencing an injury which sidelined him from racing for several months. Now under the care of trainer Matt Frazier, Stinkin Rich appears to have moved back to his previous form that earned him in excess of $200,000 in career earnings. Stinkin Rich paid $7.60, $4.40 and $2.20 across the board as the race’s second favorite. It also gave Bruce two wins on the card. She is also the owner and breeder of CB Come Fly With Me, the fastest qualifier for the $100,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity held earlier in the night.

Stinkin Rich Adds to His Bankroll in Woodard Memorial SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 27, 2016 – Stinkin Rich added to his already impressive bankroll Saturday, Aug. 27, earning the win in the eighth running of the $90,600 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic. The four-year-old Quarter Horse, ridden by Rolando Pina, found his long stride midway through the 400-yard dash to take home the top prize. Starting from the outside post 10, Pina had little to worry about at the start with Stinkin Rich. The One Famous Eagle gelding broke well and was in contention early on. Beach Cartel and Berkley Packer got the early advantage from the center of the pack. Stinkin Rich found his customary long stride and switched gears, making up ground with every stride. In the end, he was a one-length winner over Beach Cartel. WH Design By Dash and Harold Collins rounded out the trifecta to move into third. Stinkin Rich covered the muddy surface in a time of :19.528 seconds, a new stakes record. The old record was set in 2014 by This Lion Roars and jockey Yordanis Amaro in a time of :20.018. Stinkin Rich paid $5.80, $3.00 and $2.20 across the board as the second favorite of the field. “Actually, he (Stinkin Rich) was very comfortable in the mud,” said

The top 10 qualifiers for the Woodard Memorial Classic final, with jockey and time, are: Stinkin Rich (Rolando Pina, :19.839); Beach Cartel (Berkley Packer, :19.863); Tinys First Pepsi (Eduardo Gallardo, :19.868); WH Design By Dash (Harold Collins, :19.968); Absolut Teller (Giovani Vazquez –Gomez, :19.969); Pistolpacking Pepsi (Jose Beltran, :20.020); Beach Runner (L.D. Trainers Randy Smith and Ron Brown each qualified two for the final on Saturday, Aug. 27. Three additional all-Quarter Horse nights are slated for 2016. The next all-Quarter Horse racing night is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 followed by Saturday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 22. CB Come Fly With Me Wins QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 27, 2016 – CB Come Fly With Me and jockey Rolando Pina were dominant in the trials and the scenario did not change in the final of the 17th running of the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Futurity Saturday, Aug. 27. The duo rallied home easy winners in the 350-yard dash over their opponents. Starting from post eight of the 10-horse field, CB Come Fly With Me had a clean break, as did the rest of the field. She was a threat early on, getting the early advantage and only increasing her lead. At the finish line, the two-year-old daughter of Desirio was a winner by one and onequarter lengths, showing her backers why she deserved the heavily favored status in the race. Wrs Whoseyourdaddy and Omar Reyes chased CB Come Fly With Me to the wire in second place followed by Tres Seis Delight and Cesar Esqueda for third. The final time was :17.594 seconds, besting the stakes winning record set in 2015 by My Louisiana Rod and Berkley Packer in a time of :17.664 seconds.

“I told him after his win aboard Stinkin Rich to go out and do the same thing with this one,” said Bruce. “He (Rolando Pina) is the best. They both raced great.” Trainer Joe Davis has had a breakout season at Indiana Grand. He earned his first career stakes win earlier in the summer, winning the $40,000 Bradford Stakes with Parti Favor. The Sellersburg, Ind. trainer, who recently sold his heating and air conditioning business to train Quarter Horses full time, is currently ranked third in the standings with 17 wins so far in 2016 at Indiana Grand. This is by far the biggest win of both his career and jockey Rolando Pina, who also earned his first career stakes victory with Parti Favor in July. With Pina’s two wins on the night with Stinkin Rich and CB Come Fly With Me, he moves into a tie with Packer for leading Quarter Horse jockey in 2016 at Indiana Grand.

“She (CB Come Fly With Me) loves the off track,” said Pina, who has ridden her in every one of her five career starts. “Every time she comes out on the track, she wants it more. She loves to race.” CB Come Fly With Me rewarded her backers with $2.60, $2.60 and $2.10 across the board. She is owned by Carolyn Bruce, who also bred the filly. Her mother, Miss Scarlet, has proven to be an outstanding broodmare for Bruce. She is also the dam of Stinkin Rich, whom Bruce still owns, giving her and Pina an owner-jockey riding double for the night.

He could threaten the record-setting year he turned in during the 2015 meet when he won 46 races and more than $1.1 million in earnings to establish records for both wins and purse earnings in one season. Smith also established a new track record for most wins recorded in one night when he saddled seven winners during the all-Quarter Horse racing night Saturday, Aug. 13.

My Louisiana Rod Wins QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby

Packer is currently tied for the lead with Rolando Pina in the race for leading Quarter Horse jockey. The Idaho native has earned 20 wins during the 2016 meet and scored five of the seven wins for Smith on the Saturday, Aug. 13 racing program, marking a new record for most wins in one evening by a Quarter Horse jockey. Packer is in his second year riding on the Indiana circuit.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 27, 2016 – After turning in the third fastest qualifying time in the trials, My Louisiana Rod proved she was the one to catch in the 17th running of the $71,954 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Derby Saturday, Aug. 27. The three-year-old daughter of La Jollaroid broke free from her opponents early in the 400-yard dash and never looked back, rolling to an easy victory for jockey Berkley Packer. Starting from post six in the 10-horse lineup, My Louisiana Rod avoided any contact early on. Her early speed got her out and on task early on. She used the center of the track to keep her eye on the wire, posting a one-half length victory over stablemate Coco Beach and Juan Galvan. Mr Fool Me Twice and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez finished third. “She (My Louisiana Rod) left like she always does and wins like she always does,” said Packer. My Louisiana Rod paid $5.40, $3.40, $2.80 across the board. She is now six for 11 lifetime and has not finished worse than third in her career. Affectionately known as “Lucy” around the Smith Stable, her win in the QHRAI SSA Derby is her fourth career stakes victory for owner-trainer Randy Smith, who purchased the filly from breeder Gordon Timm when she was a yearling. “I was a little concerned about the post,” said Smith when asked about the start. “But I’m glad she won. All four horses (from the Smith barn) had a shot of winning this race tonight. All four are really nice horses.”

Fantastic Six Pack First in Trials for Bertram Memorial

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 10, 2016 – Fantastic Six Pack and 2014 Leading Quarter Horse Jockey Shanley Jackson turned in the quicker of two trials to prepare for the upcoming $100,000-added Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes final set for Saturday, Sept. 24. The duo covered the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.769 seconds. Starting from post six in the six-horse trial, Fantastic Six Pack broke alertly but was not in the mix early. Beach Bum Eddie and Cesar Esqueda had the lead in the early stages in the center of the track before facing a closing surge by Fantastic Six Pack on the outside. In the end, Fantastic Six Pack was able to beat Beach Bum Eddie to the finish line by a neck to claim the victory. WH Kenny G recovered from a poor start to rally back from the inside for third for jockey Rodney Prescott. Fantastic Six Pack is owned by Duke Racing LLC and trained by Matt Frazier. The win was the fifth in nine career starts for the stakes winner, who has more than $130,000 in career earnings. QHRAI NEWS - Stories by Tammy Knox, Photos by Linscott Photo Fantastic Six Pack was not the first name called out of the gate. Beach Bum Eddie and Cesar Esqueda rallied out quickly from post three and secured the lead in the first few strides of the 400-yard dash. He maintained the lead from the center of the track before the outside horses, including Fantastic Six Pack, began to close in to become a threat. Fantastic Six Pack had a big rallying stride that brought him even with Beach Bum Eddie and in the last four strides, he was able to move into the lead and take home the title by three-quarters of a length over Beach Bum Eddie. WH Kenny G and Rodney Prescott also closed well to finish in a tight photo, just a head back from Beach Bum Eddie for third.

“We were hoping for a little better break,” said Frazier. “He stumbled a little coming out of the gate and that cost us a few strides. After 200 yards, he hits a gear that most cannot and he made up that ground. He just gets more professional and better every time he runs.”

CB Come Fly With Me came into the race off a short break, not racing since her win in the $193,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity in late August. However, time away from the races did not affect the daughter of Desirio.

Fantastic Six Pack scored the stakes win, his second, in a time of :19.819 seconds, a new stakes record for the Bertram Memorial. The previous record of :19.835 seconds was set in 2013 by Tiny’s First Pepsi and Rodney Prescott. The homebred son of Fantastic Corona Jr. paid $4.00, $2.40, $2.10 across the board as the race favorite.

“We’ve been keeping her fresh and legged up,” said trainer Joe Davis. “She actually came into this race better than she did the SSA Futurity.”

“Mr. Matt (Frazier) did a good job getting this horse ready for this race,” said Jackson. “He’s a pleasure to ride and I thank the Duke Family for allowing me to ride him.” Fantastic Six Pack is currently on a three-race win streak. After winning two of his five starts as a two-year-old, the sorrel gelding has come back with authority during his three-year-old season for Chris and Stephanie Duke’s operation out of nearby Whiteland, Ind. They are also heavily involved in the Quarter Horse Barrel Racing industry. They have been involved in racing most of their lives and Fantastic Six Pack is the latest star to emerge from their operation. “His next start is fairly undecided,” said Frazier. “That is up to the Dukes. We might start him one more time this year, but he’s Indiana bred and we want to keep him sound and happy for next year.”

CB Come Fly With Me Turns in Best Time in Miss Roxie Little Futurity Trials

“This filly (CB Come Fly With Me) doesn’t take much to a whip,” said Pina. “She responds big to a hand ride. When she gets out on the lead, I have to keep tapping slowly on her with my hands to make sure she keeps going. If she doesn’t have to stand long in the gate, she actually has really quick speed from the gate. She is just a nice filly all the way around.”

CB Come Fly With Me, the heavy favorite of the field, paid $2.20, $2.10, $2.10 across the board. She now has four wins in six career starts and purse earnings in excess of $110,000. “We have a half sister to this filly (CB Come Fly With Me) that we just took down to Joe (Davis),” said Bruce, who is having a banner year with the combined success of CB Come Fly With Me and Stinkin Rich. “Joe has already started with her.” The second fastest qualifier in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Trials was recorded in the third trial as Dreamers Liaison and Harold Collins slipped under the wire in a time of :17.799. The grey son of Sixes Liaison was tough to saddle in the paddock, but once he was on the track, he was all business. Collins had Dreamers Liaison in the mix early, taking over the top spot midway through the 350-yard dash. In the end, the gelding, owned by Duke Racing LLC, was able to hold off a persistent American Purr and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez on the outside for the win by a head. A big surprise winner in the Little Futurity trials was recorded in the second heat as Im the Captain Now and Vazquez-Gomez rallied home for their second win of the season for owner-breeder Dianne Bennett. The Captain Courage gelding, trained by John McCreary, held his own along the inside the entire race and prevailed as the winner, one half length ahead of Chics Dirty Secret and Juan Galvan. Kid Cartel and Cesar Esqueda finished third.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 8, 2016 – Stinkin Rich has been impressive in three years of racing at Indiana Grand, but the now four-yearold gelding appears better than ever, scoring an easy win against many stakes winning champions in the $82,300 Hoosier Park Classic Saturday, Oct. 8 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The race, which is one of three original stakes that began in 1997 at Hoosier Park, was part of an all-Quarter Horse racing program. Im the Captain Now paid $13.20, $9.20 and $4.80 across the board. His time of :17.906, the slowest win time of the four trials, was quick enough for him to advance to the finals, a big feat for the colt that has experienced some setbacks this year. “This colt (Im the Captain Now) had had a lot of problems,” said Bennett, who has a farm in nearby Whiteland, Ind. “He broke his jaw this spring while he was in the starting gate just standing. But, he never came off his feed and he is starting to feel good again.” Bennett purchased his dam (A True Stoli) at Heritage Place in foal with Im the Captain Now. She then bred the mare back to Indiana sire Chilled Corona. She has a pair of two-year-olds that grew up together and affectionately nicknamed them after one of her favorite shows, Seinfeld. “I call him (Im the Captain Now) ‘Jerry’ and American Purr ‘Kramer’,” said Bennett. “’Jerry is a big colt and ‘Kramer’ is smaller, but he can really motor.” Both ‘Jerry’ and ‘Kramer’ advanced to the final, slated for Saturday, Oct. 22 during the final all-Quarter Horse racing night of 2016. The evening features more than $425,000 in purses with four stakes on the program. Horses advancing to the final of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, with time and jockey, include: CB Come Fly With Me (Rolando Pina, :17.623); Dreamers Liaison (Harold Collins, :17.799); American Purr (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, :17.820); Sicario (Santiago Mendez, :17.861); Zoomin B Cartel (Berkley Packer, :17.889); Kruzer (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, :17.890); DNA Dales Prospect (Berkley Packer, :17.892); Im the Captain Now (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, :17.906); Hez So Rare (Cesar Esqueda, :17.937); and Chics Dirty Secret (Juan Galvan, :17.979). Both trainers John McCreary and Randy Smith will saddle three each in the final.

Starting from post seven in the talented field of eight, Stinkin Rich and jockey Rolando Pina broke well and was on top in no time. He held his advantage through the entire 400-yard dash. The only challenge was for Pina to keep the grey gelding focused on his job.

Stinkin Rich Best in $82,300 Hoosier Park Classic

“He (Stinkin Rich) kind of wants to slow down and play with the other horses,” said Pina. “I have to get his attention back and push through. He always responds, but when he gets in front, he wants to wait on the others.” At times, Stinkin Rich led the way by more than two lengths. He crossed the wire one length ahead of Beach Birde and Juan Galvan followed by Beach Cartel and Berkley Packer. Stinkin Rich stopped the timer in :19.730 seconds and gave owner Carolyn Bruce her second win on the card. Stinkin Rich paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.10 across the board as the race favorite. He increased his career earnings to more than $338,000. The Hoosier Park Classic was his fourth stakes win at Indiana Grand. The Matt Frazier-trained son of One Famous Eagle is now on a three-race win streak. “This horse (Stinkin Rich) has really matured,” said Frazier, who is based at Ashwood Training Center in Lexington, Ky. “It’s been a lot of work and he’s come through a couple of knee surgeries, but he’s probably the biggest hearted horse I’ve ever had. He used to have some prerace jitters, but he goes down the track now and nothing bothers him. His confidence has built up and that confidence is a big piece of mind.” Stinkin Rich has found his way back to the track through an alternative form of training. The horse has been part of a new rehabilitation process that Frazier has been working on for the last four or five years. Outside of his races for 2016, Frazier notes he has only been on the track four times. “This horse (Stinkin Rich) is one of several we’ve had that have come back from multiple surgeries through this type of rehab,” said Frazier.

The win was the second consecutive trip to the winner’s circle for the Missouri-bred Tommy the Train, who won his last start at Fair Meadows Tulsa in late July. Trained by Larry Sharp, Tommy the Train is now three for five lifetime for owners Brant and Jon Barley and Brad Sharp. He paid $7.40, $4.80, and $4.40 across the board. “We have been working to get this business of the ground, and a horse like this has really responded to the treatment.” The business Frazier is referring to is Oakbridge Equine Fitness and Rehabilitation. The facility uses different forms of exercise to prepare a horse for racing, including equine hydrotherapy with underwater treadmills, theraplates and cold laser systems. It is the main direction that Frazier has gone to keep horses such as Stinkin Rich fit. “When you have a horse that comes off multiple surgeries, you have to find an alternative way to get them fit,” said Frazier. “A horse like Stinkin Rich would not be able to be on a racetrack all the time. He lives in the water.” Frazier generally heads south during the winter to race and train at Hialeah Park but with that meet up in the air at present time, he plans to remain in Lexington and work on breaking babies with occasional trips to Oklahoma to race some of the older horses. “We have eight babies to break now and have eight more coming in,” said Frazier. “Plus, that will give us an opportunity to work on the rehab business.”

The final Governor’s Stake trial produced the second fastest qualifier of the night as Damn Strait and Larry Payne rallied home for a comfortable win in a time of :17.525 seconds. The Texas-bred son of Dominyun had a one-length advantage over Eyes So Sweet and Alejandro Luna, who in turn, finished two lengths ahead of Lil Bit Jessi and Cristian Esqueda. Also an Oklahoma shipper making his Indiana debut, Damn Strait paid $3.20, $2.10 and $2.10 as the race favorite. The sorrel gelding is owned by M.C. Stucks and trained by Rodney Reed. Horses advancing to the final of the Governor’s Stake, with jockey and time, include: Tommy The Train (David Pinon, :17.503); Damn Strait (Larry Payne, :17.525); Eyes So Sweet (Alejandro Luna, :17.673); Switching Stones (Rolando Pina, :17.733); Keala Kennelly (Omar Reyes, :17.799); Shurr Furr (Fernando Fonseca-Soto, :17.854); Prudish Cartel (Cesar Esqueda, :17.873); Ladys Freighttrain B (Berkley Packer, :17.884); Tres Seis Delight (Cedar Esqueda, :17.894); and Wrs Whoseyourdaddy (Berkley Packer, :17.915). Of the finalists, Sacramento Chavez and Randy Smith will saddle two each for the final.back from multiple surgeries through this type of rehab,” said Frazier.

The win aboard Stinkin Rich was one of four on the 12-race card at Indiana Grand for Pina, which places him at the top of the leading Quarter Horse jockey standings by one win over Berkley Packer. Frazier is currently ranked fourth on the list of leading Quarter Horse trainers for 2016 while Bruce moved up into the top five for Quarter Horse owners with her doublewin evening.

The three-yearold black Captain Courage gelding led the field the entire way during the 400-yard dash, winning by three-quarters of a length over Beyondthegamewagon and Berkley Packer, who closed in quickly for second. Dynamite 123 and Santiago Mendez rounded out the trifecta. The time of the race was :19.777 seconds.

Abundanz Takes Indiana Championships

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 22, 2016 – It was a fight to the finish with a tightly packed bunch in the fourth running of the $86,920 Indiana Championship at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, Oct. 22. The stakes race was the first of four on the stellar card featuring allQuarter Horse action. The field of 10 busted out of the gate and it was anyone’s race. Close quarters kept the top seven within feet of the lead the entire 400-yard dash. As the field neared the wire, Abundanz and Santiago Mendez had just enough of an advantage to secure the win for trainer Julio Almanza and owners Francisco Raul Hernandez and Gustavo Almanza Jr. Abundanz was a nose winner over Sudden Separation and Berkley Packer along the inside, with Habits Secret and Cristian Esqueda just another head back for the tight finish in between horses. The time of the race was :19.860 seconds. A total of three lengths separated the winner from the ninth place finisher in the field, showing the competitive force at the wire.

Abundanz paid $6.40, $4.40 and $3.60 across the board as the favorite of the field. The win marked the fourth of the year for the sorrel four-year-old Corona Cartel gelding in 11 starts and his fifth win overall in his career. Abundanz had not raced at Indiana Grand since earlier in the season, and completes the year with three wins in four starts over the Indiana track. The Indiana Championships started in 2013 at Indiana Grand, the first full year of Quarter Horse racing at Indiana Grand. Prior to 2013, Quarter Horse racing was held at both Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand for split seasons. The race began with a purse of $29.080 and has grown to its highest in four years of $86,920 in 2016, representative of the growth of Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. out of the gate but he quickly made up for it and got into contention. He established himself as the horse to catch in the early stages of the 350-yard dash, but a big threat was looming on the outside of the track. Heavily favored and heavily talented CB Come Fly With Me and Rolando Pina were gearing up for the final strides. Zoomin B Cartel held his ground along the inside as CB Come Fly With Me began to close in. In the end, a three-horse photo determined Zoomin B Cartel to be the winner by a neck over CB Come Fly With Me. Sicario and Santiago Mendez finished another nose back in third. SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 22, 2016 – Zoomin B Cartel may be one of the most overlooked two-year-olds of the year at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. After winning his trial and qualifying as the fifth fastest for the final of the $190,600 Miss Roxie Little Futurity, Zoomin B Cartel shined bright during a night of stars on the all-Quarter Horse card that featured more than $625,000 in purses. Zoomin B Cartel was one of three from the Randy Smith barn that qualified for the final. Berkley Packer rode two of the qualifiers, Zoomin B Cartel and DNA Dales Prospect. On paper, DNA Dales Prospect appeared to be the stronger of the two candidates for the final, so he opted to ride that horse for Smith. Zoomin B Cartel needed a rider and Omar Reyes received the assignment, his first time aboard the two-year-old son of The Louisiana Cartel. “Every race, he (Zoomin B Cartel) has been getting better and better,” said Smith. “There wasn’t a horse in there that couldn’t have won this race. He was just the best tonight.” Bred by Gordon Timm and owned in partnership with Vicki Lundstrum, Zoomin B Cartel is now three for seven in his brief career. The gelding added more than $100,000 to his bankroll with his win in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, the state’s second richest Quarter Horse race.

Timm and Lundstrum are longtime owners and breeders in the sport. They have seen success in recent years with horses they have bred, including Stone Toasted and My Louisiana Rod. Zoomin B Cartel makes their third major stakes winner. “I was just hoping we could be third,” said Lundstrum, who was in shock after the win with Zoomin B Cartel. “We wanted to run third to get black type.” Timm purchased the dam of Zoomin B Cartel, Zoomin Zoey B, as a weanling from the Heritage Place sale in Oklahoma. She has some major runners in her immediate family. Her mother, Takapuna, has produced several stars. In fact, every one of her offspring has raced with the exception of Zoomin Zoey B. ter Horse racing in the state of Indiana in 1997 held at Hoosier Park. Starting from post four in the 10-horse lineup, Tommy the Train and jockey David Pinon had a slight misstep out of the gate that allowed others to grab an early lead. The Freighttrain B freshman quickly recovered and halfway through the 350-yard dash, he was making up ground on early leaders Wrs Whoseyourdaddy and Juan Galvan as well as Damn Strait and Rodney Prescott. The power from Tommy the Train was very evident in the final strides as the gelding moved up for the win by a nose on the inside of Damn Strait in another photo finish between several horses at the finish line. Eyes So Sweet and Alejandro Luna rallied up along the inside to get the edge for third. The time of the race was :17.640 seconds.

“When this colt was three months old, Vicki (Lundstrum) told me she’d give me $5,000 for half and I said it was a deal,” said Timm, who is retired from a 40-year-career as a fire protection project manager in his native Michigan. “We have three brood mares at our farm and all three now are stakes producing mares.”

“It takes a good horse to stumble and come back and pass horses like that,” said Pinon. “He (Tommy the Train) is a good horse and I’m very blessed to ride him. He ran a perfect race and you couldn’t ask for more.” Tommy the Train paid $4.40, $3.20 and $2.40 as the favorite. Owned by Brant and Jon Barley as well as Brad Sharp, he is now on a three-race win streak. The Missouri-bred had turned in all of his starts on Oklahoma tracks before shipping to Indiana for trainer Larry Sharp. “He (Tommy the Train) is amazing,” said Sharp. “He just keeps getting better. I think he will be a real big three-year-old. His half sister (Sudden Separation) just ran second in the earlier stakes (Indiana Championships). If he lives up to her, he will be fine.” Tommy the Train increased his career bankroll to just under the $100,000 mark with his win. He is now four for six in his career.

He was even more impressive in the final of the 20th running of the $139,440 Governor’s Stakes Saturday, Oct. 22 as part of the all-Quarter Horse racing program at Indiana Grand. “I was a little worried about him being the fastest qualifier,” said Brant Barley. “Sometimes that’s not the best. But I thought if he could leave, he’d be right there.” Tommy the Train will now get a break from racing, and Sharp says they will let him take some time off before they bring him back as a three-year-old.

TF Jess a Leader Earns First Sakes Win in QHRAI Derby SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 22, 2016 – TF Jess A Leader has been close a couple times in stakes action, but Saturday, Oct. 22 he added the tag of stakes winner to his credentials in the 20th running of the $130,360 QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Ridden by Jesse Levario, the sorrel son of Mr Jess Perry earned his second win of the year for trainer Sacramento Chavez after a claim at Remington Park for $12,500 in April. Starting from post seven, TF Jess A Leader broke well and was the first horse to appear to be advancing on the outside. Slick Melody and Santiago Mendez were holding their own in the center of the track while BP Tres Seis Policy and Rodney Prescott were getting early calls along the inside. Halfway through the 400 yard dash, TF Jess A Leader kicked into another gear and strode away from his opponents, winning by one and one-quarter length at the finish line. Dynamite 123 and Luis Ruiz finished in a close finish for second over race favorite Captain BD and Alejandro Luna for third. “I don’t really know much about this horse,” said Levario, who was making his first start over the Indiana track and his first start aboard TF Jess a Leader. “I studied his replays and it looked like he didn’t break well in the trials. He broke right alongside the eight (Captain BD) and stayed right with him. I sat down on him about the three-quarters and kept pushing and pushing. He really responded. It was a good thing to have the favorite next to me. That helped a lot.” TF Jess A Leader, the third choice of the field, paid $16.00, $6.80 and $4.00. The time of the race was :19.637 seconds. Owned by Jose Chavez, TF Jess A Leader is now three for 12 lifetime. His career bankroll was boosted to more than $100,000 with his first career stakes win in the QHRAI Derby, one of three original stakes races held during the inaugural season of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana in 1997.

Getting Your Horses Ready For Winter

Reprint from November 2013

Another thing to consider with inside show horses is their blankets. Horses in a closed barn generate a lot of heat and the barn will stay relatively warm with the doors and windows closed. With a few horses in the barn so when you add blankets and sheets to the equation, make sure the horses don’t get too hot. Many times if you put your hand under the blanket, you will find that your horse is sweating. You can actually dehydrate a horse by keeping him too hot with too many blankets and sheets. This goes for horses that are put outside with blankets and sheets on also.

If you want to keep the hair coat short, the best way to do it is to keep the horses under sixteen hours of light each day. Do not use more than sixteen hours of light as more is not better and is actually worse. One negative to this plan is that your horse’s metabolism is meant to have a certain number of days per year with shorter hours of light. So if you have him under lights all winter you have to be careful in the spring that when you stop the lights that the daylight hours you supply are not actually shorter or your horse will think it is fall and will start to grow hair in the spring.

E

ven though it is already very cold in some areas of the country, winter officially arrives on December 22. Depending on whether your horse is show horse kept inside or a broodmare kept outside in the pasture, there are several things you can do to help your horse through the winter. Contrary to popular opinion, heat is much harder on animals than cold. That being the case we will start off focusing on the horses housed inside for the winter. One of the first things most people do to protect their horses from the cold is to close up the barn. Most of the time the main reason for keeping the horses extra warm is to keep them from growing a winter coat. While a nice slick hair coat is necessary for placing well in shows, a good set of lungs is also necessary. If the barn is closed up too tightly and the ventilation is poor, the ammonia levels will build up in the barn and high ammonia levels can damage the lungs which can lead to pneumonia. The ammonia levels are especially high closer to the floor so when the horse lies down he is breathing high levels of ammonia if the stall has not been properly cleaned and the ventilation is poor. It is very important to keep the stalls well cleaned twice daily but it is even more important if the windows and doors are kept closed. We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Outside horses mainly need a place to get out of the rain and wind. A two sided shelter with walls breaking the prevailing winds is plenty. Depending on where you live you will probably need to increase your horses caloric intake to make up for the energy spent staying warm. A good way to keep your horse warm is to supply plenty of roughage. Eating hay generates heat inside the body and therefore warms the horse from the inside. It is better to provide most of the calories in roughage but if your horse cannot maintain his weight with hay alone then add a well balanced grain mixture to the daily allotment of hay. Your horse should eat about 2% of his body weight in good quality roughage per day. That is twenty pounds for a 1000 pound horse. It is also a good practice to have your horse’s yearly preventive dental care done before the winter if he is an outside horse in a cold climate. Good teeth help him to digest his hay well. One last thing to make sure of in areas where the water freezes is to make sure your horses always have access to water. Lack of water is a sure way to cause your horse to have an impaction colic. Remember, warmth is a good thing but don’t over do it. My horses live in a barn that is well ventilated in the winter. The doors and windows are closed when it is cold but the stalls are kept clean and the air can escape through openings in the roof. They do not wear blankets and their hair coats look great. They are fed a very well balanced diet. Most of winter preparation and care is common sense. Pay attention to your horse and he will tell you what you need to do. Merry Christmas and may God bless you and your family this Christmas season! Stay warm and don’ t eat too much!

Hope everyone has had a great summer. It sure has been hot that means riding after the sun goes down for me. Here’s a little Kentucky sunshine for you:

The only person you should be better than is the person you were yesterday.

Saralynne McKinley bonded and I’m so lucky to be able to run him. We just won youth barrels at an NBHA show and plan to compete at NBHA state. -Kas Rowdy Rocket aka Trigger, is my newest horse. He is a 2-year-old palomino that I purchased from Sheila Jones last October. I saw he was up for sale and I saw a picture of him and instantly fell in love with him. He is such a goofy horse and always making me laugh. He was broke to ride a few months ago and is doing so well. I plan to start barrel training him soon and getting him used to cattle.

Hometown: Dry Ridge, KY Age: 15 School: Williamstown Independent Parents : Steve and Sheri Mckinley Siblings: Jake and Austin McKinley Horses: -Zena, she is a 16-year-old bay appendix mare and the first horse we had. We bought her about ten years ago for a trail horse. A few years ago, my other barrel horse came up lame so I started barrel training her. She’s always ready to go and always gives me her all. -Sam’s Rockin’ Rullah aka Sam is a 20-year-old bay with a white blaze and a white leg. I’ve been around him most of my life and he has always been one of my favorite horses. Seven years ago he got navicular and there was a very good chance that he would never run barrels again. Last year, he got the okay to be ran again by a few different vets and I was given the opportunity to lease him. I truly feel like it was a miracle. Sam and I have quickly

Page 40

Who taught you to ride? My mom put me on a horse when I was a few years old and I loved it. I took lessons from a few different people, and then I started taking barrel and pole lessons on an awesome pony named Pumpkin. She taught so many different kids how to ride and is the best pony ever. Your mentor? I have a lot of different people I know and can always count on, but my parents are the ones that are always there for me. On the weekends, we usually get up about 5 to get ready for rodeos. They haul my horses to horse shows every weekend and always make sure I try my hardest. Favorite show and why? Women’s Pro Rodeo on RFDTV. I love watching them run, and I hope I’ll be out there with them one day. Accomplishments: I feel one of my biggest accomplishments was barrel training my horse, Zena. She is hard headed and stubborn at times, but a very versatile horse. Her and I learned steer daubing and goat tying last

year together and ended up in the top five of our class. I’ve always barrel raced so it was so different, but it is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it. I will be a sophomore this year, and was elected as the report for FFA and hope to move up through the ranks to become president my senior year. Advice to fellow barrel racers: My advice to fellow barrel racers is to never give up. Never lose faith in yourself or your horses no matter what happens. You have to struggle through some hard times to get to the good ones. Always remember why you started and always try your hardest. “Dreams don’t work unless you do.” Branch out and do other things with your barrel horses to keep them from getting bored. Plans after school? My plans after high school are to continue rodeo and try to go to a college that has a rodeo team. I would also love to become an Equine Nutritionist or vet tech. No matter where life takes me, I will always have horses in my life. After a bad day, I can always come home to them. I hope to continue barrel training horses.

YOUTH

And finally, out final Teen Corral for this month. Happy Thanksgiving!!! Sweatshirts and getting the horses rode before dark..my grass mowing has slowed down and my colts are full of their selves. This month I would like to introduce, as he said is one of his nicknames, “Little John Reed” ...

Mason Read Shirley

Name: Mason Read Shirley Hometown: Scottsville, KY Age: 14 School: James E Bazzell Middle School – Scottsville, KY Parents: Josh & Katy Shirley Siblings: Luke Shirley (4) My family and I live on a 139 acre farm where we raise beef cattle.

Current Horses: Ima Frisky Special – 10 yrs – Bay gelding out of Special Definition and a Jet Deck Junior/Doc Sug mare. My mom and I raised Frisky and he has been a late bloomer. This year was the first year that he has been hauled much and won 3rd in the Youth at the Ky State Fair at his third horse show. Very proud of how he is hauling right now and have a lot of high expectations for Frisky. Ima Sizzlin Nonstop – 16 yrs – Sorrel gelding out of Nonstop Bubblin and a Sail on Bunny/Thoroughbred mare. Nonstop is owned by Brian Dyer from Gallatin, TN and he has been wonderful to let me ride this amazing gelding for the last year. Nonstop is definitely the best horse that I have ever ridden to date. He is a powerhouse and has taught me how to ride a 1D caliber horse. Currently also riding colts for my Pa (John Read Foster). I help from start to finish usually when I have the time between sports and school. My favorite part of working with colts is when I am the first person to ever sit on them and they give me all their trust. People would say that I normally don’t have a lot of patience but when I work with colts that is never a problem. My grandfather, John Read Foster, also known as Pa Man, has been a huge influence in my life. He bought me my first pony at 18mths old and had me training ponies for sales at the age of 5. At the horse shows now I am not known as Mason Shirley, but usually “John Read’s grandson” or “Little John Read”. He teaches me something new on a daily basis and I consider myself lucky to even know him. I hope that I can continue to learn everything I can from him because I have never met a better person or horseman. It always amazes me the people that my Pa knows, because it doesn’t matter if we are in the middle of Texas, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, or any other state he will know someone at every exit on the interstate. We could also be watching RFDTV and my Pa could tell me a story about him and whatever person is being interviewed at the time. He never ceases to amaze me. Can’t talk about Pa without mentioning his better half, my MaMaw (Zelda). She is definitely the rock to our crazy family and anyone that knows us will 100% agree.

Page 44

TEEN CORRAL Other trainers I admire: Chris Coffey, Derek Hixon, Brett Monroe, Jimmy & Jamie Cagle, Quay Eaves and Jimmy Bryant Favorite horse show: My favorite horse show to go to is the Indiana Futurity at Edinburgh, Indiana. I love watching the futurity, but my favorite is watching the 3yr olds exhibition on Saturday night. Watching colts is my favorite because I like watching the different trainers doing different techniques. I enjoy the laid back environment and it always feels sort of like a family reunion.

Accomplishments & Goals: Top 20 qualifier at the 2016 All American Youth Barrel Race on Ima Sizzlin Nonstop, Kentucky State Fair – Youth 3rd, Many other accomplishments at local shows. My goals are to qualify for The American, win the Sweepstakes at the Congress, and win the All American Youth Barrel Race. I want to continue to work with colts and hopefully be able to futurity colts that I have started in the next couple of years. My mom has always been supportive and takes me to shows whenever my Pa can’t go. My dad has taught me how to be a hard

worker and take nothing for granted, even though I might not agree at the time, but I know he is preparing me for the rest of my life. My little brother Luke is definitely a hand full and you will have to watch out for him when he gets older! My aunt and uncle, Andy and Jonna Wininger also train and show. They are always ready to help whenever I need them. My Aunt Tracy has been through a lot and has taught me to live life to the fullest. My cousin Katelyn and I have been raised practically like brother and sister and even though we fight more than anything, I know she has my back whenever I need her. I have the most supportive family and I consider myself very lucky, because they have allowed me to show horses, play ball, and enjoy myself.

YOUTH

Other hobbies? My hobbies other than horses have been baseball ,basketball, and football. All of these sports has been a big part of my life too. Whenever I’m not at a horse show I’m usually playing one of these three sports or even two in one day.

w/Clint Van

Advice to fellow barrel racers? My advice to fellow barrel racers is to always keep it FUN! When barrel racing stops being fun for you than it stops being an important part of your life. You should do things that make you happy. Most of all…never get down on yourself when you have a bad run or a bad week, because there will always be another horse show.

You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it. Clint

Above L to R: My 96 year old Grandpa!!!! Enjoying a visit with me at Miami Paint; What an honor winning the Mel Daniels memorial saddle for winning the average at Hoosier Classic. Mel will be greatly missed.

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

IJRA Princess Spotlight

Greeley Eastep My name is Greeley Eastep and I am serving as the 2016 – 2017 Indiana Junior Rodeo Princess. I am so looking forward to this season. I started in the IJRA as a preschooler so I am working on my 10th and final year in the IJRA. I truly believe the experiences I have gained from participating in the IJRA have helped build me into the person I am today. I have patiently waited for my time to be a senior member of the IJRA to pay it forward to the Association for this privilege I have so enjoyed. I am planning out my year as the IJRA princess and I have exciting new ideas and projects to share as the season moves forward and ideas that actually are tributes to past princesses too good not to share with the next generation of junior rodeo contestants coming up. The season kicked off Friday September 9th with a fantastic turn out for a goat tying practice I hosted. Thank you to everyone that came out to learn and practice. I am especially grateful for Miss Rodeo Indiana, Maribeth Harrell who stopped in to help along with my super helpers Dakota Borman and Ray Brown. Spirits were high for the weekend as we rode in pink to celebrate our very own 2009 All Around Cowgirl Miss Chalee Gilliland on Saturday and Sunday paid tribute to 9/11 and Blue Lives Matter with Miss Rodeo Indiana, Maribeth Harrell being our guest of honor in Grand Entry. There is still plenty of time to consider joining the IJRA with our October rodeo weekend! Once again I will be available Friday night for any goat tyers that want to get some extra practice in before the rodeo. Then Saturday, October 10th we will be celebrating our Grandparents. Ask your Grandparents that are available to come out and share the day with us. We will have a preschool introduction during grand entry with some surprises and a special grandparent welcome. Contestants please see me to pick up a treat for your grandparents. Later in the day we will celebrate with old fashion cooked beans as a free will offering to 100% benefit the IJRA. Additionally,

for contestant fun I will host a costume class at the end of the rodeo with awards for the best dressed. I ask that everyone plan ahead and bring candy so the contestants can end the day by trailer treating to celebrate Halloween and our last fall weekend to rodeo. Sunday we will ride in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please feel free to wear your favorite rodeo shirts this weekend and don’t forget to get your grand entry participation stickers each day. Don’t miss the chance to spend the afternoon showing off your rodeo skills and thanking your biggest fans by inviting your grandparents out to the rodeo October 22nd. Help make this the best year possible and share your enthusiasm for rodeo by inviting your friends and peers to participate in the IJRA. The Indiana Junior Rodeo could not be more proud of their history and focus to encourage youth to continue to learn and enjoy the sport of rodeo as we build courage, resilience and character. Thank you!

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Are You Ready? I was offering some advice to a person regarding keeping her horse quiet until it was time to run. Some horses tend to get “hot” prior to competition and can use up too much energy on anxiety. As a rider, I want my horse to be ready to run, but not anxious regarding what is about to happen. I really want my horses to like their job and I also want them to trust me and a routine that gives them confidence going into the arena, not nervous, anxiousness that can drain their energy reseources and have them “running their race” with worry before it’s time. My routine may be different from other folks’, but I have always been blessed with horses that stay quiet and will walk into the alleyway waiting for my cue to “get ready.” That comes from a bond and them placing their trust in me. They have been trained to do the job and until the are “called” I keep them busy with quiet footwork away from the gate. I rode one gelding so long I swore he would walk to the mouth of the arena and look both ways as if to say, “Are you all ready for this?” That horse had so much confidence and it showed in his runs as well as in his action before and after. There is no doubt in my mind he loved running barrels (and still does!) The same idea can be placed on our daily walk in the “arena of life” and the competition we face every day. As a Christian are you weary or anxious about things? Do you spend too much time worrying and fretting over what is to come or do you spend time preparing to handle whatever God asks of you? If we spend time allowing God to train us and prepare us for what lies ahead, there is nothing we cannot face with him as our guide. We should be ready to approach that alleyway calmy and confidently - waiting for a cue from our Father to charge ahead full force.

INSPIRATION

There should be no anxiousness or worry, because the one who created us (trained us) is in control and holds the reins. I cannot say that I never worry - quite the contrary - I tend to be a worrier and have to continually go to scripture to remind myself of what the bible says about worry. Some argue that “fear not” and similar phrases are present in the bible 365 times - or enough to be reminded daily;)

Page 50

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV) 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. And one of my favorites: Matthew 6:2525 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. We need to be ready (see bottome of next page;), but we sure don’t need to worry about anything! Why? Because God has it covered! Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

PARTIN WAYS Skip and Rooster hit the trail Tellin` a few good lies Chokin` on the dust And swattin` at the flies

We work when we need money Just glad we don’t need a lot These pony’s we’re a ridin` Is all we really got

Skip turned to Rooster Said pard, we’ve been around But we be partin` ways If it religion you have found

Rooster said I don’t know much So I guess I’ll need a teacher I’m goin` to church today And listen to that preacher

Yep they’d been many miles Most of them purty rough Them boys weren’t the brightest That’s what made`em so tough

Skip look at those mountains Someone put them there There has to be a maker His sign is everywhere

I don’t need no god Tellin` me what to do And Rooster I can’t believe That preacher got to you

So I’ll see you around pard We’ve been ridin many days But if you ain’t comin We’ll be partin` ways

One day on the trail Rooster turned to his good friend Said Skip you ever think about Where this trail will end

That last town we was in Well… I ran into this man He said the Lord knows me And he has a plan

Rooster looked at Skip Said this is pretty hard I’ll be turnin` back now Said I’ll see you around pard

Psalms 122:1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD

I know we ain`t bad men Never ones to steal Been in a few dust ups But never did we kill

That preacher told me He would show me the way If I would repent So I kneeled to pray

Skip laughed at Rooster Where you goin` to go This trail is your home It and me is all you know

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

INSPIRATION

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

Why? Why? Why … do we do it?

Why? Why? Why … do we do it? Over the last few months, I know several great horse people, who have been seriously injured. It was a sobering reminder of the inherent danger of a thousand pound animal with a rock-like head at one end and two muscle driven pistons for legs on the other. Fortunately, although their injuries were serious, everyone will heal and recover.

INSPIRATION

Will they ride the trails, again? Will they push a horse around three barrel, some Saturday afternoon? Will they take on the training of a young horse, one more time? I do not know. I do know it is not the first time they have been hurt and they continue to love these incredibly huge-hearted creations called – the horse! We all have swung our leg over covered in “Ben-Gay”; wearing a brace protecting a broken bone or a sprained joint; or mediated with a handful of aspirin. If you are like me, you have ridden when the doctor said, “If you ride, you are a fool!” and your friends said, “You are an

idiot!” Most of us have done it when we knew both. And … why? Did I want to prove I was a man? Did I think it would make me a better rider than the next guy/gal? Did I believe it was worth a paycheck or bragging rights? No, I did it because to do otherwise would have meant I had stopped being me. I do not ride anymore. I miss it, but I chose to walk away. The ground seems much harder at fifty than thirty. Riding is gone. Horses are not! A piece of me still needs horses. Every morning, I get “my horse fix” talking to six very different creatures as I walk them out to their pastures. I get the peace and quiet found only in a barn while I clean their stalls. Without it, I would not be the same. I would not be the same “me” I was designed to be. “Horse people” ride, groom, race, train, jump, feed, and clean. Weather changes nothing. We ignore the stares of others, who will never understand. Those,

who share the same love, nod their head and understand. Sitting in the saddle means we do not need to stretch out on a therapist’s couch. Brushing a mare’s mane or running our hands over the face of our favorite gelding may be the only touch of love we know. Talking to a green two-year old, who has never seen a tractor, a cow, or a creek reminds us what it means to connect with a living creature. Watching a newborn foal stand for the first time reassures us of God’s love for us. So ….. why do we do it? The answer is seen in the face of the man/woman looking back at us in the mirror. We find it in the eyes of others sitting around a fire. We feel it when we look heavenward and whisper, “Thank you, God”. Doing it, doing all of it, is not something we do; it is who we are. LivExceptionally, Chris

He graduated from a Baptist liberal arts college with degrees in Pre-Law, Business and Theology; and from the University of San Diego School of Law. BarksThat’s N Bits in Dog Years I heard someone ask the lady other day, “How old is Bella?” I stopped in my tracks to listen for her answer. “Well, she’s getting up there in dog years.” What does that mean? Dog years..... what is the difference between dog years and people years? The last time I checked we canines weren’t keeping track of time in any sense of the word - unless it is time to eat or time for a nap.

w/

Bella

Barks N Bits w/Bella

I read a quote by Bill Keane that says a lot: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” Dogs have no problem enjoying the present. We love naps and laying in the sunshine, chasing butterflies and belly scratches. People on the other hand are sometimes too consumed with yesterday and tomorrow that

As if to say, “How much time do you think she has left” without really saying the words.

I don’t have a calendar on my refrigerator or my desktop computer (although I do have a desktop computer.)

I’ll answer the question for those wondering....

It seems like the people get caught up way too much in calendars and appointments and especially ages.

I have as much time left as God decides to give me...and that will be in dog years - enjoying every moment of the present.

I get it, it’s a way to measure, I’m a pretty smart dog. I understand the concept of time....I just have an opinion about it (of course) and think scheduling and rushing around takes the emphasis off of the present.

Until next month,

Flashback with Bella

Since last month’s freeze out and the New Year’s involuntary diet resolution (I still protest), things have gotten very busy around here at the ranch. There has been a lot of activity going on at the barn - most of it revolving around the two new stallions that have taken up residence here with us. I am not quite sure what all the fuss is about, they eat and require a wheel-barrow to clean up after them....just like the rest of the horses in the barn. (I’m sure the people around here wouldn’t like it if it required a wheel barrow to clean up after me.) I suppose if I were a female horse I might be a little more excited about these “studs”....but I’m glad I’m not a female horse. I get to sleep in the house in my own bed and they don’t.

Speaking of beds, I mentioned last month that I got a new bed for Christmas....well, it should be no surprise to learn that my prediction came true......Princess Annabelle has already taken a stab at destroying my comfy new napping place. Thank God, one of my people seen her attempt at sabotage in process and moved my new bed to a safer location. We’ll see how long it takes her to find it and try again.

they neglect to breathe deep and enjoy the moments they are given....hence the question, “How old is Bella?”

Neighbors..... and Being Neighborly Excerpt from Barks N Bits, Winter 2011

I do have to admit that the little black bark box -slash- “brat”wurst has not been as much of a nuisance lately because she doesn’t move around a lot when it is cold. On the other hand, I have a new thorn in my side. The neighbor dog. He is a yellow lab and he is HUGE. He lumbers down here to visit every time someone heads to the barn. It has gotten so bad that the people even try to sneak out quietly without him hearing them. Too funny! When the people start banging around on the buckets full of ice....here comes ‘Ole Duke. He pushes his way in when the people start passing out the pats and praises and there’s not much left for the rest of us, especially the short ones like me! He probably doesn’t mean anything by it, but he is just sooo big, no one else stands a chance. He even does this thing where he “smiles” (I’ve dubbed him “Smilin’ Duke”) at the people and then they actually feel bad for the big lug and let him hang around. I’m just glad they don’t feed him. There there would be NO food for any of us.... forget the diet, it would be considered fasting.

I ran across some Duke droppings the other day. I expect the people will be building him a stall soon if the wheel barrow size “you know what” is a sign of stall status. I’m thinking that I am going to have to take control and join up forces with Princess Annabelle and the outside dogs to take back what is rightfully ours. Until next month....

Bella
