LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
promised myself I wouldn’t make this a long sappy letter, just a short and sweet note with a “See Ya Later” at the end. Life is taking me in new and exciting directions and the hard part about moving forward is leaving some things behind. With that being said, this will be the last printed version of The Horse Resource.
Don’t panic! I’ve been working really hard to update our website to include all of the archives from the past 10, yes, that’s right, 10 years! It’s a work in progress and we’ll be adding the old along with NEW articles and event coverage. Go check it out and let me know what you think at www.thehorseresource.net There will still be a FREE calendar page to list events and you can send me info for that page via my email address - thehorseresource@msn.com. IF you need graphic design work or have a website that needs built...keep me in mind. THE HORSE RESOURCE lives on by offering all of these services to our loyal readers.

I know he won’t look as slick as his summer coat, but just trying to make the best of it. Any other ideas? can wash his white feet and possibly get the mane and tail looking nice. what else? Appreciate it. JLazyT_perf_horses You can get a pack of baby wipes and rub them down after you use the block. Or just get a damp bath towel and rub them, cover them with a cooler for a few minutes. It doesn’t really get them wet enough to worry about them get-
ting too cold, but it pulls up a lot of the dirt that just grooming won’t get. I have a black horse and no amount of brushing/slick block/shine spray every really gets that grunge from under his hair. Ashley Lynn There is a spray sheen that you can buy at tractor supply. It’s in a white Can with red letters, it’s an aerosol can. Use the brick and a brush to get them as clean as possible, then spray with the sheen and wipe over it with a soft rag. It’s my go to!!! horsegirl A halter horse grooming trick: use a shop vac and vacuum them! It not only removes all the fine dust, but it brings the oils to the surface and makes them shine like no other. I love my shop vac. oija If you have enough time and can keep them warm after, most show people body clip the winter coat and let it grow just a bit before pics etc. LMS or turn the hose around and blow
them off-similar to how the cattle groomers work over their cattle! If you want the hair to lay downeither put them inside a warmish barn or trailer for a half hour and the hair will lay down. Baby wipes for faces and I also found some spray made by EZALL that works pretty good! http://www. ezall.com/ezall/ourproducts/ ShowAndGoShineAndConditioner.aspx Stride I wash my horse in Shapley’s Hi Shine, then rinse and let him sit in QuikColor for 5-10 minutes. After rinsing all the shampoo out, I do an oil treatment with Shapley’s light oil in warm water sponged over the entire horse. Don’t rinse. I then spray all over with vetrolin shine. I cover him with a light blanket and slinky for the evening and the next morning I just brush and wipe off with a rag. Any white legs get clipped and washed with QuikSilver. madredepeanut We use pumice stones or grill blocks in the spring to help them shed out quicker, and they could be used in the winter to make
them appear less fuzzy for pictures. You can get small ones from any store, but restaurant supply stores usually have big boxes of them for super cheap, and they’re in big blocks, instead of the smaller sizes, so they last longer. https://www.webstaurantstore. com/scrubble-by-acs-gb12-tsh8-x-4-x-3-... We just hold them in our hands and use them like brushes to loosen the dirt and trim their coats. We don’t normally use them on their faces or manes/tails. Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity - 43 Years Strong

The 43rd Annual Indiana Barrel Racing event has come and gone already. Some of the best barrel racing Futurity riders attended this year’s event making for a very competitive event in both the futurity and open.

Stefanie Duke narrowly edged out Troy Crumrine to win the 43rd annual futurity event. Stefanie’s winning ride was SR Godiva, a 4 year old mare out of Famous Silk Panties and sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon. Heath Boucher of Ohio was the breeder and & owner of Famous Silk Panties. Great sponsors and approvals by several organizations brought exhibitors trying to get points before the end of the year. A big thanks to the BFA, QHRAI for the Certified Indiana Bred program, Future Fortunes, Kiss, IBRA & On The Road for their approvals. The Certified Indiana Bred Program awarded money to horses who were registered Indiana Breds in Racing with at least one race out. Stefanie Duke riding PYC Speed Wagon was the Open winner of the added money, This five year old gelding is out of Tejereta who was a past Indiana Futurity winner and also sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon.

Youth Finals
O
ur return to the TN Miller Coliseum for the 2017 National Finals was a blast! We had over 600 horses residing on the property all competing for a piece of the $133,000 pie that was paid out through the week. We awarded 20 Pro Rider Saddles which Jerry and Pricilla made absolutely beautiful. 100 Carrol Leather Jackets were distributed, 20 Gorgeous Buckles from Molly’s Custom Silver, BOT Blankets donated by JHA Tack, some awesome coolers from Equibrand, amazing tack sets by Mandy’s Custom Tack and more.
Sponsor/Directors Race
As always the week began with our Sponsor/Directors Race and as usual Billy Hatzman took home the 1D win. Billy has been the Sponsor/Directors Race Champ for 4 of the last 7 finals. Out of the 3 years he didn’t win he took home a reserve champ spot and a 2D Championship. That’s not to bad. Furthermore, we appreciate all Billy’s help throughout the year as he is on the Tractor for numerous, Super Shows, State Shows, Preferred Show and the National Finals. Our Florida State Directors daughter ran in Johns place in the Directors race. Jeanna Kuszlyk took home the 2D Championship aboard a Fresh Streak. One of our Maryland Reps and also the Maryland Master’s 1D Champion took away the 4D Sponsor Race Championship. Congratulations to Denis Bost and Streaking Sensation. Congratulations to all those who placed in the Sponsor/Directors Race and thank you all for the various ways you help make this Association what it is.
$10,000 Guaranteed
The Guaranteed Race sets the bar each year for what the Top Riders will shoot at the next day in the Open 1st Go Round. Out of 372 entries and some of the top riders on the East Coast, Nealy Dalton set the pace with a 15.355 leading the pack by nearly a full tenth. This run was the 3rd fastest of the week. The run earned her $880 and a Pro-Rider Saddle. KY Member Summer Pauly won the 2D for a $660 paycheck and a ProRider Saddle. This was just the beginning of Summer’s success as she would go on to take in nearly $5,000 for the week. Pennsylvania’s 2D Masters Champion swept in to win the 3D for a $440 check and a Pro-Rider Saddle. IL Top Dog Anastasia Schuessler and Mr. Doc Casady lead the 4D for a $220 Check and a Pro-Rider Saddle.

Adult Finals
The 2017 Youth National Champion is a young lady who has become known near and far in the last few years and for good reason as this is her second Youth National Championship. Her horse caught everyone’s eyes four years ago at the National Finals when her grandfather jockeyed Cool Memories to win the 2nd Go Round and finished as the Reserve Champion just behind Ashley Brooks in the finals. Since then Elaina McKinney has ridden Cool Memories to earn numerous checks at Nationals including her Second Go Round win in 2015 that set the arena record for C Bar C. Last year Elaina could not make the Finals but she and Cool Memories came back strong winning the Youth 1D National Title and the Reserve Champion title for the Open 1D. Remember the young lady I was telling you won close to $5k throughout the week. Well one of those checks came from winning the 2D Championship of the Youth Barrels. Ms. Summer Pauly and She’s A French Hero ran a 15.986. You could say she won the 2D or you could say she ran 7th in the race as there was not a single space between the 1D and the 2D. Sierra Scott and D’Jango represented well in their home state of Tennessee bringing back the 3D Youth Championship. Sierra and D’Jango came into the Finals as State Qualifiers in West Tennessee and won a Pro-Rider Saddle and $250. Emmah Duvall and Tiny Time ran a 17.464 to win the 4D National Finals Championship. The pair were 2017 State Qualifiers in Virginia.
Adult Finals
The 2017 Adult 1D Champion set the bar high for her competition running a 15.529 in the Final Round of the Adult barrels. It proved to be set plenty high as she out ran the field by over 3 tenths. Jamie Cagle and Victorious Dash earned a National Title, a Pro Rider Saddle and $417 for their run. A Wisconsin Top Dog claimed the second division Championship. Brea Johnson and CCR Firefly ran a 16.079 for the win. Pacing the 3D in the Adult Finals was Mississippi’s 2D Reserve Champion of the Adult class, Allison Faries and Dancer. The 4th division Pro-Rider Saddle will find its home in Kentucky with Adult Top Dogs and now 4D National Champions Leslie Sloan and Sage.

The name that took home the 2017 Masters Championship is one that needs no introduction. This man has won more IBRA National Finals Championships than any other single contestant and coming into the show he and his horse were the reigning Open National Champions. Chris Coffey and Famous Firewater Anny ran a 15.527 to place them in a familiar spot, the top of the leader board. Illinois claimed both the 2D and 3D Titles with Wendy Curry and Ricky Karrol. Wendy and Bar O Dark Chocolate’s 16.061, was just right to earn a $411 paycheck, a new saddle and a leather jacket in the

National Championships 2D. Ricky and Lucky MNR Lucky Bug ran a 16.561 which was good enough for the 3D Masters Champion Title. Mississippi’s Christine Cousineau arrived a Champion and left a Champion in the Masters class. Christine and her horse Zans Oak Frost came in as Mississippi’s Masters Class State Champions and returned home with the 4D National Champion Title as well.

Your 2017 National Finals Champion is Bert Skimehorn and Shez Truly Oldtimes! Not only did Bert win the Short Go but she did it with the fastest run of the week. When I walked up to congratulate her she exclaimed “FINALLY!” As most of you know, Bert is no stranger to the leader board. She has been the IBRA National Reserve Champion but the Champion title was one she just couldn’t grasp. Until now. Shez Truly Oldtimes led Bert to a $3221.47 check, a new Pro-Rider Saddle and a Carrol leather jacket. A true Champion, humble and always willing to help, we are proud to have Bert represent our organization as this years National Champion! As is often the case with a show that has this many tough riders, the 2D National Finals Champion is a horse and rider combo who could have been many peoples pick to win the whole thing. Ms. MiKayla Conklin and Bloodymaryinatincan won the 2D National Championship with a 15.750. They earned a $2416 check, a new Pro-Rider Saddle and a Carrol leather jacket. The 3D had everyone fired up this year as we had a RUN OFF! Illinois’s Cole Mosby and Pennsylvania’s Amber Peterson both ran the exact same time of a 16.266. I don’t know if it has ever happened before but I know in all the years I have worked for the IBRA I have never seen a run off on Finals night. When the dust had settled it was On A Cash Streak
and Cole Mosby that would become the National Finals Open 3D Champions. Indiana member and IBRA Show Producer, Kaycee Badger and her horse Drama took the 4D Championship. Kaycee ran a 17.247 to earn a $805 check, a Pro-Rider Saddle and a Carrol Leather jacket. Kaycee and her husband Dustin also worked as part of the staff for the Finals and were instrumental pieces to the puzzle. There is so much more to be told and you can find it in the following pages with the complete results of the finals. Top 5, Top 10, Go-round info, its all there. There are so many people that need to be thanked for making this show possible that the list would be beyond our allotted room. So Ill just say this. five-year-old gelding is second in earnings on the list of all time Indiana bred Quarter Horse performers behind Pistolpacking Pepsi, who has more than $450,000 in career earnings. Stinkin Rich is now 10 for 16 during his career. The repeat win in the Hoosier Park Classic is his six career stakes win. His last defeat was in the Bradford Stakes in July 2016. He is in the capable hands of trainer Matt Frazier, who has overseen his conditioning for the past three years.

“He’s just a dream horse,” said Frazier. “He is classy and keeps getting better. He was a little more excited about today’s race than he normally is, but it didn’t affect him. He ran a great race.” Bruce and her husband, Mickey, have a small breeding operation in southeastern Indiana. Their broodmare, Miss Scarlet, was the 2016 Broodmare of the Year in Indiana and has produced three exceptional runners back to back. In addition to Stinkin Rich, they have campaigned CB Come Fly With Me, last year’s two-year-old of the year, and Perfical, a two-year-old filly this season that has two wins to her credit.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 6, 2017 - For the second straight year, Stinkin Rich was unstoppable, winning the 21st running of the $83,600 Hoosier Park Classic at Indiana Grand. With regular rider Rolando Pina aboard, the flashy grey gelding rallied to the lead and never looked back, winning the race by one length and securing his sixth straight victory for owner-breeder Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind.
“I just love this horse,” said Bruce of Stinkin Rich. “I couldn’t be more proud of this horse. He has such a big heart and every time he races, he gives it all he’s got. And, like Rolando (Pina) and Matt (Frazier) said, he likes to be out front, which I like too.”
Beach Treat Tops Trials for Miss Roxie Little Futurity Stinkin Rich and Pina, Indiana Grand’s current 2017 leading Quarter Horse jockey, began from post six in the nine horse field and had no issues leaving the gate. Once the son of One Famous Eagle got his feet firmly planted, he was in running mode and got a nose in front early on. The talented pack of older Indiana bred Quarter Horses stayed together but Stinkin Rich began to inch away from them to be the clear cut winner of the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.844 seconds. WH Kenny G and Harold Collins won the tight photo for second over Beach Cartel and Berkley Packer. Beach Bum Eddie and Luis Guerrero were also involved in the photo for second, finishing a neck back in fourth place. “He is a wonderful horse to ride,” said Pina. “He broke out with the others and I only touched him one time. He likes to be on the lead and he’s really powerful. Once he gets his eye on the other horses, he takes off.” Stinkin Rich, the favorite of the field, paid $3.80, $2.60, and $2.10 across the board. He increased his career earnings to more than $433,000. The

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 7, 2017 – Beach Treat and Harold Collins found an early path out of the gate and stuck to it all the way to the wire, posting the fastest trial of four on the program Saturday, Oct. 7 during the fifth of six all-Quarter Horse racing nights at Indiana Grand. The duo turned in a time of :17.926 seconds over a rain-soaked sloppy track to top 36 horses attempting to make the ninth running of the $150,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity final slated for Saturday, Oct. 21. Starting from post eight in the nine-horse lineup, Beach Treat responded to early urging from Collins and got out of the gate swiftly to be the first name called by track announcer Bill Downes. DNA Bells Bay and Berkley Packer stayed close to Beach Treat early on but near the end of the 350-yard dash, Beach Treat began to lengthen his hold on the field. Beach Treat was a winner by one length over DNA Bells Bay while heavily favored Stone Cold Leader and Rolando Pina overcame a tough spot out of the gate with little room on the inside to rally up late for third.

The second fastest qualifier of the night was recorded in the fourth trial with Be Afraid and Alonso Rivera (at left) sweeping the field in a time of :17.943 seconds. Be Afraid also got out of the gate quickly and never looked back, leading the way the entire race to earn his win by three-quarters of a length over Air Born Rio and Luis Guerrero. SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 7, 2017 – Quarter Horse Trainer Larry Sharp made his trip to Indiana worthwhile Saturday, Oct. 7, picking up the top three spots for qualifiers advancing to the ninth running of the $100,000 Governor’s Stake slated for Saturday, Oct. 21. Sharp saddled La Vencedora and Jockey James Flores to a neck win over his other entrant, Cappy, ridden by Shanley Jackson, and then BS Special, also ridden by Flores, in the other trial for a very solid one-two-three punch heading into the final. La Vencedora and Cappy were the first two out of the gate, starting side by side and battling for the lead throughout the 350 yard dash. It took the majority of the stretch for La Vencedora to overtake her stablemate, inching forward late to win by a neck over Cappy in a time of :17.837 seconds. The top two were open lengths in front of the rest of the field that was headed up by Racanteur and Rolando Pina for third. La Vencedora came into the race with only one defeat in four outings. The freshman filly by Ivory James is now four for five and on a fourrace win streak for owner Jon and Brant Barley. La Vencedora is inching closer to $400,000 in career earnings for her connections.

The two-year-old son of standout Indiana sire Escondido Beach earned his second career win in his sixth career start for Brown, who has campaigned many top Quarter Horses on the Indiana circuit in recent years, including Pistolpacking Pepsi, who is the richest Indiana bred Quarter Horse of all time in the Hoosier State.

Tommy The Train Rolls to Top Spot in QHRAI Derby Trials SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 7, 2017 – When Tommy The Train comes to town, it means one thing for his opponents – trouble. The three-yearold son of Freighttrain B is undefeated in five career outings at Indiana Grand spread out over the past 12 months. Guided by James Flores, he once again proved he will be the one to beat in the $100,000 final of the QHRAI Derby set for Saturday, Oct. 21. Starting from post four, Tommy The Train and Flores had a less than desirable start from the gate on the sloppy surface, losing some momentum early on but quickly regained his composure and was right back in the thick of the race. The Missouri-bred gelding dug in gamely and emerged as the eventual winner by one and one-half lengths in a time of :19.795 seconds as the heavy favorite of the field. Ladys Freighttrain B and Berkley Packer finished a solid second over One Fantastic Gal and Luis Guerrero for third. Paying $2.40, $2.10 and $2.10 across the board, Tommy The Train is now seven for 11 lifetime for his owners Brant and Jon Barley and Brad Sharp. Larry Sharp picked up his third training win of the night with Tommy The Train, who has accumulated more than $150,000 in career earnings.

A newcomer to Indiana was the winner of the second trial, turning in the second fastest time behind Tommy The Train. Roostersito, owned by Carlos Ignacio Rosales of North Carolina, has raced all over the United States, but his start in the trials for the 21st running of the QHRAI Derby was his first in the Midwest. The three-year-old son of Pappasito rallied out of the gate early for jockey Rolando Pina and fought hard along the inside to fend off his challengers. Grabbing a short lead a few strides before the wire, Roostersito rallied home in a time of :19.913 seconds, one-half length ahead of Tuxedeau and Alonso Rivera, who was just a nose ahead of Jess A Dollar and Jose Davila who had to settle for third. Roostersito earned his second career win in eight starts. The win in the QHRAI Derby trial marked his first start of 2017 under the direction of local trainer John McCreary. The three-year-old son of Freighttrain B didn’t have a perfect journey but was able to put together a trip that brought home the win, his fourth straight victory with Jockey James Flores aboard. Starting from post two, Tommy The Train came out of the gate awkwardly and drifted in, catching some contact with Prudish Cartel in the process. Flores was able to get the gelding straightened up and he began to run during the 400-yard dash. Midway through the race, it appeared that Tommy The Train would kick into his familiar closing gear
An objection regarding the start then prolonged the win once again for the connections of Tommy The Train for a second time after the race. However, the objection was disallowed, providing the platform for Tommy The Train to retain his perfect six for six record at Indiana Grand. The heavy favorite of the field, Tommy The Train paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. The time of the race was :20.247 seconds. “He (Tommy The Train) did just about everything he could to get beat tonight,” laughed Sharp. “He had a pretty good run, then he laid off a bit. I don’t know. Maybe he’s like me and wanted to go home.” Tommy The Train has been at Indiana Grand since before the trials, which were held Oct. 7. Sharp said he doesn’t do anything special with the horse between races and he’s easy to keep fit. He did notice a change in him leading up to the final of the QHRAI Derby earlier in the day. “He (Tommy The Train) did get a little nervous in the stall today,” said Sharp. “There were so many people coming through, and he knew he was going to run. He started walking the stall a little. This win was a gift tonight. He was able to pull through to get the win.” Tommy The Train now has eight career wins in 12 career starts for owners Brant and Jon Barley and Brad Sharp. He increased his bankroll to more than $220,000 with his win in the QHRAI Derby. It also marked his third stakes win at Indiana Grand in the past 12 months.

Tommy The Train Extends Win Streak to Four in QHRAI Derby
One Fantastic Gal and Luis Guerrero were in position to pounce on Tommy The Train in the late stages of the race, and they took advantage of the situation. They closed in to create an exciting finish and a tight photo at the wire. After a short deliberation, it was determined Tommy The Train was the winner by a nose over One Fantastic Gal. Cartels Justice and Jorge Torres finished third.

Bono Rhythm Upsets in Speed Sale Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 21, 2017 – For owner and breeder C.W. Mullenix, racing in Indiana has been an investment that dates back to 1987. He brought the stallion Born Runner to the state from Oklahoma that year, which changed the landscape of Quarter Horse racing in the Hoosier State. Thirty years later, Mullenix continues to invest in the program from his farm in Carbon, Ind. and his latest graduate, Bono Rhythm, is carrying on the winning tradition. The two-yearold filly broke her maiden in the fifth running of the $44,080 Speed Sale Futurity Saturday, Oct. 21 at Indiana Grand. Starting from post six, Bono Rhythm fired out of the gate for jockey Rodney Prescott and drifted to the inside, finding a path to follow during the 330 yard dash. Prescott kept after the petite daughter of Bono Jazz and held onto a short lead. In the final strides, Bono Rhythm was joined by Speranza Di Capi and Oscar Macias along the inside but was able to get to the wire first by the margin of a head over Speranza Di Capi. Race favorite Jessalilsecret and Berkley Packer rallied from the outside to close in for third. The time of the race was :17.201 seconds.
“You are not going to believe this but all we used this year for was training,” said Mullenix. “Getting a win was unexpected. This is like a bonus. Her momma (Dashs Rhythm) is a pet. She was a Canadian champion and won nine races, four of which were stakes races. So we had hoped this filly would be a Derby winner. But, we weren’t expecting anything from her this year.” Bono Rhythm added another $24,000 onto her career bankroll for Mullenix. She will enjoy time off before preparing for her three-year-old season. “We ran this filly (Bono Rhythm) through the sale last year,” added Mullenix. “But she was Hip No. 1 and you know what that meant. She didn’t bring very much so we brought her back. She’s pretty small but she can run. This is the most fun we’ve had since Born Runner has been gone.” Born Runner passed away in 2009. To honor his legacy in the state of Indiana, the Born Runner Classic is held each year in June. Now in its seventh year, the stakes race was won by horses from Born Runner mares the first five years, making the race even extra special to Mullenix.
At odds of 17-1, Bono Rhythm paid $37.00, $10.60, $6.80 across the board for the win. It was her fourth career start and the first time she had hit the board in any of those tries for Mullenix and trainer Randy Haffner.

LF Curly Stuns Field in $188,200 Miss Roxie Little Futurity
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 21, 2017 – After just barely making the cut to compete in the final, LF Curly proved she was a legitimate contender as she rallied home the winner in the ninth running of the $188,200 Miss Roxie Little Futurity at Indiana Grand Saturday, Oct. 21. The twoyear-old filly stunned the field of nine to fend off Be Afraid and Alonso Rivera at the finish for the win, the first of her career. Starting from post six, LF Curly had no issues getting out of the starting gate and had a straight path during the 350-yard dash. The daughter of One Famous Versace had a nose in front early and was being pursued strongly by Be Afraid throughout the race. Be Afraid started closing the gap in the final strides of the exciting finish that awarded LF Curly the win by just a nose over Be Afraid. Fish Head and Luis Guerrero was also on the winning end of a tight photo for third, finishing just a nose ahead of Air Born Rio and James Flores for the show spot. The time of the race was :17.992 seconds
“I’m glad we got this win for him (Dan Frazier) tonight,” said his son, Matt Frazier, who now handles all the training duties for the stable. “We knew the third time out of the gate that this could be a nice filly. She showed us that night what she could do and she could run. We really have to give credit to the blacksmith. He was able to glue four shoes on that were a size bigger because she is small and has such tiny feet. That helped her a lot tonight.” Another aspect that helped LF Curly for her win was the reconnection with Jockey Shanley Jackson. Jackson, who has been the first call rider for the Frazier Stable for the past few years, was injured in a starting gate mishap earlier this year and missed several months of action. He recently returned to the track just in time to ride LF Curly in the trials of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity. “First of all, I have to give credit to God and thanks to Mr. Matt (Frazier) and his family for putting me on this filly,” said Jackson. “Especially since I’m just coming off an injury and just got back. After she just barely qualified for the final, I was a little worried, but Mr. Matt told me, ‘don’t worry about it. I got you,’ and he did. The credit goes to Mr. Matt and his team. They have worked really hard on her since the trials, and she was really good and happy tonight.” LF Curly scored her maiden breaking win in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity in her fourth career start. The addition of the $103,000 to her bankroll was a big boost for her connections to complete her two-year-old season. “She (LF Curly) will have a nice long winter out in a cold field,” added Frazier. “Then we will get her ready for her three-year-old campaign.”

“I am surprised every time I ride this filly (BS Special),” said Pinon, who is now undefeated on her in three outings. “Every time, she has given me a little more. I got her out of the gate and looked over and La Vencedora looked like she slipped just a little. If it had been the other way around, I’m not sure what would have happened.” BS Special, owned by Duane Murphy, paid $10.00, $4.00 and $3.20 across the board. The daughter of Freighttrain B is now five for seven lifetime. The homebred filly bred and raised by Barley and Sharp Farm of Missouri, now has more than $114,000 on her books for Murphy. She and La Vencedora have been stabled side by side at Indiana Grand since before the trials for the Governor’s Stake held Oct. 7.
BS Special Fends Off La Vencedora at the Wire in Governor’s Stake SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 21, 2017 – Trainer Larry Sharp had a lot to cheer about in the final strides of the 21st running of the Governor’s Stake. He saddled three for the final and two of them were battling it out in the final strides for the win. BS Special was able to fend off La Vencedora right at the wire for the mild upset, giving Sharp a one-two finish in the race. Starting from post nine in the 10-horse final, BS Special had earned her spot in the final by winning her trial, but all eyes were on La Vencedora, the fastest qualifier and the most celebrated horse of the field. La Vencedora, winner of the Grade II $1 million Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity earlier this year, had a mild misstep out of the gate right to the inside of BS Special, giving Jockey David Pinon the early edge in the 350-yard dash. It was clear halfway through the race that the top two were the ones to beat. Side by side, BS Special and La Vencedora began their battle, and neither filly was giving in an inch. Jockey James Flores had ridden both fillies to victory in the trials and it was no surprise he chose La Vencedora in the final. He was aware that BS Special would give it her all en route to the finish line and it would take a big effort to get by her. Although La Vencedora closed in during the final few strides, BS Special was able to maintain control of the race, winning by just the margin of a head at the finish over La Vencedora. All American Ease and Cristian Esqueda maintained positioning on the inside to finish a comfortable third in the race that stopped the timer in :17.740 seconds.

“I’m pretty winded,” added Pinon during a post race interview with Martha Claussen, Wrangler Q-Racing Ace who was on hand to assist with the final all-Quarter Horse racing night of the 2017 meet. “She kept going after the wire. I had trouble pulling her up.” Trainer Larry Sharp will return back to Missouri with trophies for three of the five stakes races on the card. In addition to his win with BS Special, he also saddled Tommy The Train to a win in the QHRAI Derby and Apollitical Man to a win in the Indiana Championship Stake. Sharp completes his 2017 season at Indiana Grand with an impressive stat line of eight wins in 12 starts for a 67 percent win percentage and an 83 percent top three percentage. Horses under his care have raked in more than $272,000 during the season. The Governor’s Stake is one of the oldest pari-mutuel Quarter Horse stakes in the state of Indiana. It was part of the trio of races that kicked off pari-mutuel racing in the state in 1997 at Hoosier Park. The race was moved to Indiana Grand when the state moved all Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing to Indiana Grand and Hoosier Park kept all Standardbred racing at their facility. The race was part of a five-stakes evening for Indiana Grand, which featured more than $572,000 in purses for the sprinters. In addition to the appearance by Claussen, the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) provided a long-sleeved shirt giveaway along with $2 race wagers to fans attending the final allQuarter Horse night of 2017.

Apollitical Man wins $85,480 Indiana Championship SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 21, 2017 – Apollitical Man and James Flores were on a mission from the start and led the field of talented older horses from gate to wire to win the fifth running of the $85,480 Indiana Championship at Indiana Grand Saturday, Oct. 21. The race was one of five stakes races on the card to polish off the final all-Quarter Horse racing night of 2017 at the Central Indiana racetrack.
Flores is currently ranked sixth in the country among all Quarter Horse jockeys for purses accumulated in 2017. The Oklahoma native has more than $1.6 million on his credentials with 69 wins. He frequently travels all across the country to compete in races. In just the past week, the multiple Graded Stakes winning jockey has ridden at Will Rogers Downs in Oklahoma and made the trip to Prairie Meadows for the Grade I AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship Stakes, a race he finished second in aboard Time For Wine. Flores is in his seventh year of riding and has a long, successful relationship with Sharp.

Starting from post six in the nine-horse lineup, Apollitical Man made his first start at Indiana Grand an impressive outing. Flores, who has been the regular pilot on the five-year-old gelded son of Apollitical Jess, knew he needed a quick, clean start, and that is what he got from Apollitical Man. Once on the lead, the duo never looked back, rallying home to a one and three-quarter length win in the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.641 seconds. Country Boy 123 and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez was able to fend off Stinkin Rich and Rolando Pina for the tight photo for second. “He really repeated what he did in his last out,” said Flores, who scored his first of two wins on the card aboard Apollitical Man. “When he runs his race, he is hard to beat.” Apollitical Man, the third favorite of the field, paid $9.20, $4.00 and $2.80 across the board. He earned his second straight win and his third in five starts for 2017 with his win in the Indiana Championships. He is owned by Jon and Brant Barley and capably trained by Larry Sharp. Apollitical Man cruised over the $100,000 mark with his win, now boasting more than $143,000 in career earnings. He has eight wins total, four of which are stakes wins all under the guidance of Flores, who leaves Indiana Grand this season with 10 wins in 26 starts and more than $240,000 in purse earnings. “I like this racetrack and I like the people here,” said Flores of his suc-

Randy Smith Earns Third Consecutive Quarter Horse Training Title at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 27, 2017 – Trainer Randy Smith had another banner year of racing at Indiana Grand. The Broughton, Ill. native completed the season with 32 wins to score his third consecutive title at the Shelbyville, Ind. racetrack.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 27, 2017 – Owner-trainer Tony Cunningham has a long history of winning races in Indiana. The Clarksville, Mich. native has competed in every year of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana since its inception in 1997. For the second straight year, Cunningham takes home the title as the 2017 Leading Quarter Horse Owner at Indiana Grand.
Smith, who missed the first two months of action and still retained the title, also took over as the track’s all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer. Smith now has 175 wins since taking out his trainer license in 2009. His best year to date was recorded in 2015 when he won 46 races at Indiana Grand and accumulated more than $1.1 million in purse earnings, both records at the track. Smith also became the first and only Quarter Horse trainer to eclipse the $1 million mark in purse earnings for one season, a feat he repeated in 2016. Last season, Smith added his name to one more record in the books at Indiana Grand. He saddled seven winners during an August 2016 program to establish the record for most wins in one night by a Quarter Horse trainer. Smith always reverts to his standard saying, “good owners, good horses, good help.” “It’s been another good year,” said Smith. “We appreciate all the help and their work. If it wasn’t for good help, we couldn’t be successful.” Kevin Greely, director of racing made the trophy presentation. Rachel McLaughlin, racing broadcast production manager, conducted the interview with the Smiths. Smith said that plans after the meet are still undecided, but they may head West. Wherever he goes, his owners have already purchased some yearlings so he will keep busy breaking babies for the 2018 season at Indiana Grand. Smith and his wife, Debbie, built a beautiful training center just minutes from Indiana Grand in 2015. The 60-stall barn also includes a quarter mile indoor jog track along with an Equicizer under roof and multiple paddocks.

Cunningham had 10 winners in 58 starts as an owner with purses of more than $129,000. He carried a 41 percent “in the money” average during the season that stretched from April through October. Cunningham also finished second in the leading Quarter Horse trainer standings, earning 27 wins and more than $525,000 as a trainer. Rachel McLaughlin, racing broadcast production manager, made the presentation. “It goes to the support of the team,” said Cunningham. “They are working hard to get better every year. We are finished for the year now. We will go to the farm and break babies and get ready for next season.” One yearling will be especially exciting to get on the track for Cunningham this winter. He purchased the half sister to this year’s two-year-old standout Stone Cold Leader for his wife at the recent QHRAI Speed Sale. “We don’t raise babies anymore,” noted the multiple stakes winning trainer and owner. “It just got too hard to breed our own stock anymore since we are racing out of state. We generally just rely on our owners and the sales for our yearlings. We have roughly 20 to break this year.” Cunningham keeps a string of horses at Indiana Grand during the racing season but also oversees operations at his farm in Michigan. It generally takes three trips to Indiana Grand per week with a trip that is nine and one-half hours round trip to keep up with both sites, relying on the capable hands of Salvador Villalobos while he’s back in Michigan. “Salvador takes care of things at Indiana Grand when I’m not here,” said Cunningham. “He’s been with me for the past four years and has done an excellent job.” One of the highlights of the season came at the very end of the meet when his longtime standout Beach Bum Eddie set the track record for 300 yards in mid October. It was a nice boost for Cunningham’s barn and a great way to showcase an Indiana sired horse on the list of track record holders at Indiana Grand.

2017 Indiana Grand Quarter Horse Racing Leaders LEADING JOCKEYS
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 27, 2017 – It was a repeat of 2016 as Quarter Horse jockeys Rolando Pina and Berkley Packer completed the season on equal terms. Both jockeys reeled in 21 wins during the 120-day meet that included six all-Quarter Horse nights from mid-April through October. Pina started off the meet with authority and was among the track’s top three riders for the first two months. Packer returned to Indiana in June and quickly picked up where he left off, eventually catching up to Pina in the final month of racing. In the final few nights of action, the two once again were inseparable and will share the title of Leading Quarter Horse Jockey for the second straight season at Indiana Grand. Both Pina and Packer were added to the record books last season. They each scored 28 wins on the year to equal the record for most wins by a jockey in one season that was set in 2013 by Harold Collins. Packer also earned the distinction of winning the most races on one card, recording five wins in August 2015. This season, Pina had several stakes wins and completed the year with more purse earnings. He was the only jockey to eclipse the $500,000 this season with a total of $525,857. Packer had more top three finishes for the year. The Idaho native not only won 21 races, but he finished second in 18 of his 112 starts for an average of 45 percent on the board for 2017. Pina had a similar top three average on the year, maintaining a 47 percent average on hitting the board. Neither Packer nor Pina were present for the trophy presentation at the conclusion of the 2017 racing season. Kevin Greely, director of racing, and Rachel McLaughlin, racing broadcast production manager, conducted the presentation and accepted the trophy on behalf of each jockey. The 15th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing concluded Friday, Oct. 27 at Indiana Grand. Racing will resume in April 2018. Official racing dates for the 16th season of racing will be approved and announced soon by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission.

The Board of Directors at their November 2017 board meeting voted to discontinue the online payment system.

The U.S. Postal Stamp must be on all envelopes received for race payments.

All payments for Stake Races and SSA Races will need to be mailed through the U.S. Postal Service and must be post marked by the due date to be accepted.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Time to Move On How do you know when it’s time to move on? That’s a good question for many various scenarios we could encounter in life. There are a few I can think of as related to horses from where we can draw some insight. If you’ve ever ran a barrel race, you had to start somewhere. If you started riding as a kid on your grandpa’s pasture ornament or your parents purchased you a nice youth horse to bring you along...those were both good places to start. BUT you had to move on sometime after that, correct? Sure, you could have taken that pasture ornament to the barrel races or you could have even ridden the youth horse until you were no longer considered a yoouth. No shame with either scenario...BUT, again, at some point you had to move on. How did you know when it was time? Did God send you a message written in the clouds? Was there some miraculous “ah ha moment” when you felt the earth shake and a new horse magically appeared in front of you? Well, it’s possible...but unlikely. It is more likely that you struggled with letting go of what makes you comfortable only because of the desire to grow. I’ve often used the words, “I’m right where God wants me.” But I have recently came to realize that if not explained, those words can lead to a complacent or lazy spirit and some would even use that as an excuse to do nothing to improve or to grow. When I use that phrase, I look at is as more of an acknowledgement that I am where God wants me and there is a reason I am here that will show me the next step to me journey in His plan. I should be content in where I am now - looking to Him, not stagnant or complacent. Being content is far from being stagnant or complacent. con·tent: adjective in a state of peaceful happiness. stag·nant: adjective showing no activity; dull and sluggish.

A few of my all time favorite passages of scripture come to mind. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Hebrews 10:36 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. I don’t know what God has in store for me, but I do know that I am right where I am supposed to be today at this moment. I also know that means that I will have to move on at some point. I will take what I have learned from where I am today and use it on the next leg of my journey.
If I’m content it has nothing to do with taking my eyes off of God. I can be content and still looking for the next step or the next door to open,
Just like we can use what that old pasture horse or that good youth horse taught us to make us better riders, what we’re learning from our life experiences today will make us better people and better Christians.
If I’m stagnant or complacent I’m either too lazy to care or am so caught up in myself that I take all the credit for where I am and am not looking to get any better...my eyes are not on God.
We also have to keep in mind that we cannot use those lessons for betterment if we become stagnant or complacent.
We should always be looking to God for where He is leading us next. I know for me personally the last few months have been a struggle to let go of what I know and strive for something different. God has opened the doors and I have to keep my eyes on Him and am moving forward. I have to remind myself that He knows what is best and I need to keep my eyes on Him and His word for guidance and peace when making any decision...especially big ones;)

No Resolutions - Just Solutions So good we decided to reprint from December 2016
M
y old buddy, Bob Pavey, used to tell me the first thing you taught a horse to do was to stand still. I can hear him saying, “You can’t let him run, unless you can make him stand.” A countless number of evenings were spent sitting on Ace (who knew how to stand) watching Bob hold a cigarette in one hand and a cold beer in the other while he made a new horse stand where he wanted.
INSPIRATION
One of the finest gentlemen I’ve ever met, Steve Cole, would tell me, “A good horse you ask, you never tell.” Steve has forgotten more about horses than I will ever know. One of the favorite parts of every show was listening to Steve tell stories of great horse he had loved. We spent many a morning sitting outside his motor home with a cup of coffee in hand fighting off the morning chill. In everything she did, Angie Cunningham showed me how to be gentle and tough. Several years ago, I remember talking to her about my son, Taylor, being afraid of her. She asked, “Why in the world would he be afraid of me?” I explained I understood his fear completely. After all, I told
her, “I’m afraid of you, too.” Yet, Angie would do anything for you. They aren’t kids anymore, but a whole bunch of “Youth” riders demonstrated their ability to ride without any fear halfin, half-out, or not in a saddle at all. I may have been half-in, half-out or all the way out, but I always carried fear with me. As I wrote these words, there were ten days left in 2016. I spent some time pondering the past and considering the future. I asked if I wanted to repeat my mistakes or find a new approach to the coming year. Resolutions seem like wishful thinking, not a plan. Solutions are a change achieved in a plan and reached through a process. It’s been a long time since I’ve shared a cold beer and a campfire with Bob. I miss those mornings with Steve Cole listening to him tell stories about days gone by. I still see Angie every once in awhile at the feed store and she still is the unique combination of grace and toughness reserved, I think, for country, farm and horse women. Time has passed and all those kids, including my own, are no longer kids.
However, no matter how old I am, I’m still learning. With the beginning of a new year, the lessons taught by friends about horses are good ones for me. I need to learn to stand. Standing strong, standing firm, standing true, once seem to be lost arts anymore. I need to ask, not tell. Requests go much further than demands whether it’s horses or family, friends, and others. I need to learn to be gently tough and toughly gentle. Most importantly, I need to know when to be which. Change comes when fear is crushed. I can choose to change, but only if I am willing to push through the fear. In this new year, I wish for you the ability to stand; the wisdom to ask and not tell; to know when to be gentle and when to be tough; and to ride through life without fear LivExceptionally, Chris

I’ve told you all about this before, but I thought I would enlighten you some more this month. The lady that lives here has been on a varmint catching spree. Remember there is a difference between varmints and critters. (I’m a critter....FYI.) Well the lady has been on a mad spree of catching the varmints that keep stealing eggs and harassing the chickens. (Although the lady has been known to harass a few chickens in her day...see picture.) She has become quite the catcher of opossums. I think shes up to four this week! It’s hilarious to watch her and the girl acting like they are big hunters and yelling “Yee Yee!” You’d think they have their own television series. If only I knew how to set up a YouTube account, I could probably go viral with all the crazies around here. I just take it all in and wonder what other dogs do for entertainment. I mean, we’ve got opossum catchers, donkey trainers, chicken whisperers and horse collectors all living on this farm. These crazy people keep me entertained all day, every day. What have you got, city dog? Maybe I’ll look into that YouTube channel. In the meantime, check out my website to keep up from here on out. The address is:

Last month I let you in on the noise level around here at the ranch. (That hasn’t changed much.) I also gave you a good idea of what it is like to live with a donkey who thinks he is the funniest thing on four legs.
This past month has only confirmed what I threw out there in the last issue. The donkey is officially a “Court Jester” and his whole purpose in life is to entertain the folks around here. I was just stating my opinion last month, but I heard it from the lady who lives here in her own words. She said, “How can you listen to him or look at him without smiling and maybe even cracking up?” She’s cracked up alright. She went on to say that he was well worth the money she paid for him, that she had received as much in return in the form of laughs. I still don’t get what is so funny about a loud laughing, egomaniac of a donkey. The man who lives here seems to side with me on this one.....I have come to a conclusion and I think I speak for us both when I say, “The donkey needs a job!” It seems like the “Court Jester” and the “Princess” are the only two around here who don’t have to earn there keep and seem to exist for entertainment purposes

only. What great gigs! Everyone else around here has to work for a living, including yours truly. I’ve taken some time to think on this very seriously and think I have came up with a couple of jobs for each of the free-loaders. Here are my thoughts.... Since the donkey is so active and enjoys making a lot of noise, I think he would make a great baby sitter for the baby foals. His entertainment experience could come in handy when the babies are bored and need something to grab their attention. Of course this job is most useful after they have been weaned and are no longer with their mommas, so we will have to revisit this job opportunity for Seven late next summer. The other option for the donkey that could work very well in the next couple of months is working as a stand in for the live nativity scenes before Christmas. I especially like this one....he could be rented out and leave for long periods of time. However, I don’t think the lady and the little girl that live here will go for that idea.
I think we will have to settle for teaching the donkey how to chase away strange dogs and maybe even coyotes. He is pretty scary when he makes all his noise and comes running at you with those ears flapping and feet flying. I’ll have to admit, if I didn’t know him, I’d probably split if I seen him coming after me. He is loud and isn’t too crazy about dogs. With a little training, this just might work. I’ll keep you updated. As far as the Princess is concerned, I’ve thought and thought and the only thing I can come up with for her to do around here to earn her keep (that she could do well) is “lap warmer.” That’s right, I said it. She makes a nice lap warmer. Now talk about a great gig...... Until next month.... Earn your keep......

Ingredients 1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple sauce 1 cup oat bran cereal or ground oatmeal 1/2 cup all purpose flour Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Oil a 9” x 9” square baking pan 3. Spread the batter evenly in the cake pan and bake for 20 to 30 minutes until firm to the touch 4. Keep unused treats in the refrigerator

Ingredients 1 cup uncooked oats 1 cup flour 1 cup shredded carrots 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/4 cup molasses Directions 1. Mix ingredients in bowl 2. Make small balls and place on greased cookie sheet 3. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown
Barn Cookies Ingredients 4 cups grain (like oats, steam-rolled) 8 tablespoons flour 1/2 cup molasses 3/4 cup water Directions 1. Combine all ingredients in large mixing bowl. 2. Stir with large spoon until mixture is the consistency of thick cookie dough. 3. Drop tablespoons of dough on a greased cookie sheet, spacing cookies 1 inch apart. 4. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour or until crisp. 5. Remove from oven, and cool for 30 minutes.
Sticky Treats Ingredients apple or carrot corn syrup quick oats Directions Cut apple in half. Take core out. Roll in corn syrup then oats. Do the same for a carrot. Horses love this treat and it only takes 30 seconds.
