LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
hope your month has been as great as mine. I’m just now getting time to reflect and I realize that sometimes I forget to stop and thank the good Lord up above for all the blessings he has given me while I’m here on this earth. I honestly never thought I’d be thankful to be doing anything other than showing horses in my free time, but we’ve done a lot of travelling with our kids this year with things other than horse shows and I have not lost my mind (don’t ask my husband, he may disagree wink, wink.) I have actually really enjoyed going to volleyball tournaments and golf meets, although I still compare everything to a horse show and I keep telling my daughter that we should just take the living quarters horse trailer and park in the facility parking lot for the tournaments. No one seems to think that is a good idea. Honestly, I grew up showing horses and didn’t realize there is a whole other world out there of people chasing other sports...haha! Of course now that there is a break from the kids’ activities, we are back to horse shows as a family and I love it!
Until next month.... step outside your comfort zone, try something different, go for a trail ride, check out Cowboy Mounted Shooting, (play some golf or volleyball).....then get back on that horse.....and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! Horses with Thin Tails cecollins0811 Besides braiding them, what are some things that you have done to try and grow out and make a thin tail thicker? cheryl makofka A thin tail is genetics, there is no miracle cure to make the hair come in thicker. Just like people some have thick some have thin. I have found Vitamin E helps their manes and tails grow faster. Southtxponygirl Agree with cheryl makofka I have one gelding that has a awesome tail and thin mane, and another that
has a thin tail and good mane. Serenity06 My gelding has a thin mane and tail. He keeps his mane trimmed down by rubbing it out so you can’t tell. Lmao perfectturns MTG is amazing. I had a horse get her tail chewed off, kept it clean and braided for a year and had zero growth. Started putting mtg in it twice a week and not braiding, I’ve had 5-6 inches of growth in 4 months. Plus before her tail was thin, now it’s full and thick Frizzy Lindsay MTG for sure. I MTG my geldings tails and then brush it all out, braid it. A couple days later do the same thing. I find that brushing helps, but MTG is a sure bet. ajs2002 DON’T BRAID IT!!! Along with making sure you have the proper nu-
trition. You have to keep the tail soft and not wanting to break. Like everyone else said genetics are genetics and you are only going to be able to do so much. But you want to prevent breakage as much as possible. That means keep it conditioned with something to keep it as non brittle as possible and try to keep them from swishing it as much as possible during bug season. Karol Don’t touch it! I condition my gelding’s tail, but I only use a corse body brush once a month. When I leave his tail alone it will get thicker and longer. LMS Flax, 1 cup per day per horse. Lph88311 We trim our horses tails and it helps them grow. It also helps all the hair eventually become the same length so it appears thicker. It works best to trim them after they have been washed , conditioned and brushed
so you don’t trim it uneven. Having their tail trimmed (not short, just not dragging the ground) can also prevent them stepping on it and pulling it out. Good Luck! SKM Hate MTG. It stinks and will burn horses with thin skin. hammer_time I agree. I don’t see the appeal with MTG. I like to brush once a week to detangle, and keep in a very loose braid mostly at the bottom of the tail. If I need to take it out, I brush with a body brush like someone else mentioned. Genetics play lay a big part. I’ve also heard some people using BioMane.

Known for a career in Thoroughbred racing for the past 21 years, Prescott has also fared well in the Indiana Quarter Horse ranks, and the win aboard Beach Cartel was his 100th career Quarter Horse win. “I think pretty much all of my Quarter Horse wins have been in Indiana,” said Prescott. “I did ride a few Quarter Horses over the years at River Downs, so I might have won a race there, but all the others were in Indiana.”

Prescott currently leads the jockey standings for Quarter Horses and is also among the track’s top five in the Thoroughbred ranks. Last season, he made history by finishing in the top five in both categories, a first in the history of pari-mutuel racing for the state of Indiana.
Beach Cartel Strong in 75,000 Born Runner Classic SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 28, 2016 – Beach Cartel passed his first real test as an older Quarter Horse Saturday, May 28, and the fouryear-old gelding passed with flying colors. Ridden by Rodney Prescott, the son of Escondido Beach turned in a commanding performance to win the eighth running of the $75,000 Born Runner Classic at Indiana Grand, the first Quarter Horse stakes of the 2016 racing season.
For Smith, Beach Cartel was one of four horses in the field from his stable. The Broughton, Ill. native is the defending champ among all Quarter Horse trainers and rewrote the record books in 2015, winning 46 races and accumulating purse money in excess of $1.1 million, new records for both categories.
Starting from post one, Beach Cartel had a clean break from the gate and once he got a few strides into the race, he was unstoppable The grey Indiana bred Quarter Horse rallied home in a quick :19.969 seconds to win by one-half length. WH Design By Dash and Cristian Esqueda found a spot along the outside to close in for second over Chilled Six Pack and Harold Collins for third. Trained by Randy Smith and owned by breeder Sheri Miller of Shipshewana, Ind., Beach Cartel is now eight for 11 in his career and has won his last four outings. He toppled over the $200,000 career earnings mark with his win in the Born Runner Classic. “We were a little concerned about post one because there haven’t been any winners from post one yet this year,” said Smith. “But he (Beach Cartel) amazed us out of post one and got the win.” Beach Cartel, the heavy favorite of the 10-horse field, paid $3.40, $3.20, $2.60 across the board. His winning time of :19.969 seconds also established a new stakes record for the Born Runner Classic, surpassing the old mark set in 2014 by Air Born Leader and Harold Collins in a time of :20.007 seconds. “This horse (Beach Cartel) does everything right,” said Prescott. “He stands perfect in the gate and doesn’t make a move. He’s a fast horse.” Beach Cartel, 2015 Three-Year-Old Colt of the Year in Indiana, is now two for two in 2016. It also marked the third stakes win for the horse, who was unraced at two. “We haven’t made any changes to him this year,” said Smith. “He’s come back like the horse he really is. He went to Glen and Sheri Miller’s place at the end of the meet last year and was turned out. We brought him back in at the end of February to our farm here in Indiana and started getting him ready. Heisasgoodasheis Turns in Fastest Trial for Gordon Mobley Futurity Final SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 4, 2016 – A total of 36 Indiana sired two-year-olds went to battle for a spot in the upcoming $150,000-added Gordon Mobley Futurity Final spread out over four trials Saturday, June 4 at Indiana Grand. Heisasgoodasheis and jockey Rolando Pina was the fastest qualifier of the night, turning in a trial time of :15.542 seconds to advance to the final set for Saturday, June 18. The win was the first of three on the night for Pina and trainer Joe Davis, who also picked up two wins and qualified two for the $100,000 Jaguar Rocket Final, also slated for Saturday, June 18. Starting from post six in the nine-horse field, Heisasgoodasheis left the gate and was not a major threat at the start. It took the two-year-old sorrel son of Chilled Corona a few steps to get into gear, but once he got comfortable, he surged to the lead, fending off heavily-favored Beach Zoomer to win the 300-yard dash in a time of :15.542 seconds. Beach Zoomer and Berkley Packer finished a neck ahead of Powerfull Stone and Cesar Esqueda. All three horses turned in the fastest three times of

The trial was his second career start for breeder, owner and trainer Davis, who owns and operates a training center in Borden, Ind. in the southern part of the state. “I really didn’t think we had anything for the nine (Beach Zoomer) in there,” said Davis. “I was a little shocked, but guess he proved me wrong. He is the second foal from this mare (Sheisassheis). I bought her off Chris Duke. Her first foal (Heisasheis) ran in the sixth race. The two-year-old is much better than the three-year-old.” The second fastest trial of the night went to HH Kentucky Krome and Harold Collins. The son of La Jollaroid turned in a late closing effort to nip Jess Jace and Rodney Prescott at the finish line by a nose for the win. The time of the dash was :15.677 seconds and kept the sorrel gelding undefeated in two starts for breeders and owners Larry Carter and John Myers. Paul Martin trains. “He (HH Kentucky Krome) wanted to follow the seven, but when he got clear, he hit another gear and took off,” said Collins. “He is a nice horse.” HH Kentucky Krome paid $5.60, $4.00, $2.20 across the board. “He (HH Kentucky Krome) is still young and still figuring out what he’s doing, but he has a lot of raw talent,” said Martin. Other trial winners on the night included Kid Cartel (Cesar Esqueda) in a time of :15.863 seconds to rank eighth on the list of the 10 qualifiers and Rockin Tokyo (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez) in a time of :16.087, which was not quick enough to qualify for the final of the Mobley Futurity. “He (Kid Cartel) has been training really well,” said Trainer Tony Cunningham. “He got sore early so we gave him a break, but he has been getting better every time lately. He is class about everyting.” Kid Cartel, owned by Craig Zeneberg of Michigan, was making his first career start. The gelding is by Kool Quick Kid and is one of three in Cunningham’s barn for Zeneberg. “The extra distance really did help tonight,” said Pina, who rode the gelding to a second place finish in his first and only start coming into the Mobley trial. “He (Heisasgoodasheis) seemed to concentrate a little more. He gets a little nervous but when I stand with him, he comes back and he runs good. He was a lot better tonight.”

Starting from post two, CB Come Fly With Me was coming into the race off one career start, a fourth place finish against maiden company, so the two-year-old daughter of Desirio was overlooked. However, when the gates sprung open, CB Come Fly With Me made her presence known. She led nearly every step of the race to the wire, winning by the margin of one and one-quarter lengths over WH Secretive and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez. Chics Dirty Secret and Rodney Prescott rounded out the trifecta. “This filly (CB Come Fly With Me) has a whole lot of talent,” said Davis. “It took a bit of work, but she has turned out great.” CB Come Fly With Me has good bloodlines. She is from the same mare as Stinkin Rich, a multiple stakes winner in Indiana, and has a good base already started for a strong career. She also marks a milestone for Bruce, who is celebrating her 40th anniversary this year with owning racehorses. “When we got married, I told my husband I wanted a horse,” said Bruce. “He bought me a horse and we rented a stall at the fairgrounds in Lawrenceburg. Pretty soon after that, we bought a farm and he came home and said he wanted to buy a racehorse. We went to the bank and borrowed money to buy the racehorse. We won our first race in our first out. The horse’s name was Jag Pac Bailey. We’ve been in the business ever since. We now have two brood mares and have three in training, a two, three and four-year-old.” CB Come Fly With Me paid $18.00, $5.80, $4.80 across the board as the surprise winner. It also gave Davis his second of three wins on the program. Davis also conditioned Jes A Spitfire to a Jaguar Rocket trial win in the ninth race of the night. Also guided by Pina, Jes a Spitfire rallied home a one-length winner in his trial in a time of :15.733 to rank fifth on the list of finalists for the Jaguar Rocket.

And, you can’t go wrong with a son of Corona Cartel.”

“In her last race, it was her first start back and she (My Louisiana Rod) needed it,” said Packer. “She is honest and she likes to go to the other end of the track. They ran with her for a while but she was running away from them at the end so I thought we got it.” The win in the Harley Greene Derby was the third stakes win for My Louisiana Rod and her fourth career trip to the winner’s circle out of seven career starts, all recorded at Indiana Grand. She has been a force for the Smith Stable since her debut last year and has not finished worse than second in her career thus far. “We felt comfortable with her first start back in the trials,” said Smith, who established new records for Quarter Horse trainers last year in the training ranks. “We felt even better when she drew post ten. That just helps you stay out of trouble.” The time posted by My Louisiana Rod was a new stakes record for the Harley Greene, besting the time of :17.706 seconds set by Hand of Doom and Jose Beltran last season. My Louisiana Rod paid $6.20, $3.60, $2.80 across the board as the favorite in the race.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 4, 2016 – The first of six all-Quarter Horse racing programs was conducted Saturday, June 4 with 10 races on the card. The featured event of the night was the second running of the $89,800 Harley Greene Derby for three-year-olds with My Louisiana Rod and Jockey Berkley Packer getting the nod at the end for the victory. Starting from post 10 in the 10-horse lineup, My Louisiana Rod had no issues from the start and had plenty of room to get in gear. Beach Bum Eddie and Cesar Esqueda had the early lead in the center of the track. They were digging in all the way to the wire, making it tough on the rest of the field to catch them. My Louisiana Rod had a strong finish on the far outside, and Packer timed the wire just right, getting the win in the final stride of the 350-yard dash in a time of :17.433 seconds over the sloppy track. Bella Estrella and Cristian Esqueda won the tight photo for second over Beach Bum Eddie. It was the second start of the season for My Louisiana Rod, who finished second in her trial to qualify for the final. The three-year-old daughter of La Jollaroid was bred by Gordon Timm and is now owned and trained by Randy Smith.
The next all-Quarter Horse racing program is set for Saturday, July 9 featuring finals for the $50,000 Heartland Futurity and the $100,000 Blue River Derby. To help promote the event, Wrangler Racing Ace Denis Blake will be on hand to assist fans with handicapping and to answer questions about Quarter Horse racing. Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 PM EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 PM. The 120-day season runs through Saturday, Oct. 29. Thursday racing will be offered during the months of July and August from July 7 through Aug. 25 with a post time of 2:05 PM. Methods Of Weaning

T
he best weaning method is the one that fits you your facility and results in a stress-free, relaxed, and uninjured mare and foal.
One popular method is pasture weaning and this method is commonly used on farms where mares and foals are pastured in groups. At weaning time, one or two of the mares with the oldest foals are removed from the group, leaving their foals with the group. The mares should be removed quickly at a time when the foals are occupied somewhere else. The mares should be taken to an area completely out of sight and hearing distance of the other mares and foals. Additional mares may be removed from the group when their foals reach the desired age. This process occurs until all mares have been removed. Some farms will introduce a nice calm gelding that remains with the weaned foals to provide some education. This method seems to have little stress on the foals as most will quickly adjust to the herd of familiar horses. However, all foals should be observed in the hours following weaning to ensure they don’t become too distressed when they realize they can’t find their mothers. If pasture or interval weaning isn’t possible, which is often the case if there

is only one foal to be weaned, other common methods are used. One method involves immediate separation from the dam, while the other is gradual separation. Immediate separation involves bringing the mare and foal into a stall and removing the mare. Some people will place the newly weaned foal with a companion animal or another just-weaned foal. Although a companion may seem to be a less stressful option than leaving the foal alone, foals that are weaned and given companions have been shown to have increased stress response than those weaned and left alone. If you do plan to use a companion animal, it is important that the foal doesn’t become overly attached. This can make separation from that companion nearly as stressful as weaning from its mother. Gradual weaning is a common method. Allowing foals to see, hear, smell, and touch their dams through a fence, but not nurse, for seven days prior to complete separation is known to be less stressful in the days following weaning than abrupt weaning. Studies have shown a reduced stress response and higher feed intake in the first week after weaning in gradually weaned foals. Foals weaned by this method also exhibit less emotional stress, vocalization, and activity than abruptly weaned foals. When comparing

Summary Every foal must be weaned from its dam at some point. However, how the weaning process is undertaken may have significant effects on the growing foal. The goal is to have the foal healthy, well socialized and growing at level rate when it is weaned. Then each management team must evaluate their facility and situation to make the foal’s cross over from a life with mama to a life with his friends as seamless as possible. The result will be a happier foal. gradual weaning with abrupt weaning, there is little difference in feed intake from about two weeks after weaning, but the major benefit of gradual weaning is the reduced stress and reduced risk of injury.
Researchers describe an animal as in a state of stress if it must make abnormal or extreme change in its physiology or behavior to cope with the adverse effects of its environment or management. Under that definition, weaning surely qualifies as a stressor to young horses. It has been documented that foals which suffer undue stress when being weaned can lose their appetites and lose weight and when they recover later on, they often undergo a sudden growth spurt. The result of this dip and surge in the growth curve of a young horse sometimes is a cause of developmental orthopedic disease (DOD), the condition in which bones and joints begin to develop abnormally, causing contracted tendons, physitis, or even bone cysts in the joints of the limbs. In contrast, foals which undergo the minimum amount of stress during weaning continue to grow at a more even rate. A level rate of growth makes them far less predisposed to DOD. One study reported that stalled yearlings had a reduction in radiographic bone density that was not observed in age-matched controls maintained on pasture. Reduced bone density is one effect that is minimized in foals that are weaned on pasture as described previously. Another study evaluated effect of age on weaning. Foals were weaned at either 4.5 months of age or 6.0 months of age. To compensate for possible seasonal effects, foals were matched so a 6-month old foal and a 4.5-month old foal were weaned on the same day and then kept in the same pasture. Although it was suspected that younger foals would be affected by weaning more than the older foals, weaning at an older age did not reduce the depression in average daily weight gain observed in the first week after weaning. Furthermore, at 8 months of age, there was no difference in either

Hey ! Hope everyone is doing good..Horse show season is in full bloom hope the rain slows down a bit. This month I did something a little different for my interview. I am helping a couple of little up and coming horsewomen and also lifelong friends of my family. At first, I will admit, I didn’t want to help them, but now I actually enjoy it. They have taken me back to the basics on lots of things that I take for granted. Riding colts has taught me some patience, but working with young kids - that’s REAL patience.
If It doesn't challenge you, it won't change you.
When I asked to interview them they said, “Wow, now we’re ‘FAMOUS’ because we’re in a magazine!” When ending our lesson and I throw them each a box of skittles and say, “Good job!” they get all excited. I’ll admit it does brighten my day. Next time you see a pee wee or beginner rider let them know they are doing a good job. They are the future of our sport!

Clint Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Kentucky High School Rodeo Invitational Indiana High school rodeo association attended the Kentucky High School invitational in Lexington at the KY horse park May 27-29. It was a beautiful weekend to rodeo at a gorgeous facility. Many members had some great times and runs in their events. Katlyn O’Leary nailed a goat tye in 7.7 seconds winning the second round, Layne Webb covered his bull ride, Noah Duby had a phenomenal bronc ride, Sydney Hurley had an awesome three second breakaway run just to name a few highlights of the weekend. INHSRA will compete June 10-11 at Edinburg IN for state finals and the top four in each event will then travel to Wyoming for National Finals. Watch for results in a future issue!
A Little News from Earlier This Season Indiana High School Rodeo picked back up the season this Spring in DeQuoin Illinois April 9-10 at the tri state rodeo. What a great weekend with beautiful weather and some great runs made by the IN team. It was great to reconnect as a team as well as see other great friends and rodeo family from surrounding states. Bad Ground I have written often in the past about planting seeds and reaping what you sow. I have emphasized to be sure and plant good seeds and not to be planting weeds. This month the Lord laid it on my heart to talk about the seed (God’s word) that we plant in our own hearts and more importantly… the kind of soil we are planting it into. Being barrel racers we all know about how the ground conditions can affect our horses performance. We’ve probably all been on both sides of that coin…from the top to the bottom of the drag or even from one day to the next. I know from rodeo experience that sometimes you get the good and sometimes you get the bad. I’ve ran on great ground one day and the girls that evening in the slack had to run in the rain…or the next day in slop. And, I have had the tables turned and been the one running in the mud. There are many types of ground conditions we ask our horses to run on. And some horses handle “trashy” ground just fine…but ideally…wouldn’t we all like to run on good ground all the time in order to have every advantage?
INSPIRATION
The idea of good or bad ground is also found in the bible in the parable of the sower. This can be found in Matthew Chapter 13, verses 3-8 and 18-23. I will go ahead and print it here: Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “ A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a cropa hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. …Listen to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke

it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
you get embarrassed? Or when you are put on the spot, do you choose to go with the flow… and never take root? Or are you worrying too much about what others think and say and about worldly things like money and gossip?
Jesus really goes in depth here to explain several different kinds of situations. It’s kind of like we hear about ground that was shifty or slick, deep or sticky. There are many scenarios…but again…it all goes back to the ideal type of ground to run our barrel race or… plant our seed.
This is only a small look into what kind of ground you are planting your seed in…We can all read the word (that seed is ALWAYS good) but it is up to us to plant it in good soil or we will never see a harvest.
Are you the man who receives the word in good soil? Are you hearing the word and understanding it? If you don’t understand it… are you asking the questions so that you will? Are you letting the devil steal it before it ever has time to take a hold? Are you excited about it until you get around your friends and then do

hovered only a few feet off the ground, as if it was a suspended, bejeweled blanket set afire by the morning sun peeking over the treetops.
What could be better? Driving down the road with the one I love. A new day had dawned bathed in beauty. Flashes of sunshine shone off ripples of white left in the fields and warmed the inside of the car.
The pace of life said, “Move on!” Creation whispered, “Stop! You need to see this.” If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one was worth ten times any other. It reached beyond my senses and reached deep inside my chest.
What could be better?
Really, what could be better?
Maybe, you missed it. Maybe, you wouldn’t understand. Maybe, you will. My insides danced along with the sunshine on the windows and I could no longer contain my emotions. I had to do it! There was no question. I had to stick my head out the window. The rushing wind forced a smile on my face where joy would have put one, anyway.
Other cars rushed past us on country roads. There were no smiles inside their cars, as they drove hurriedly towards the next task. We had many things on our “To Do” list; but we had found contentment almost buried in the rush.
INSPIRATION
When I was chilled by the cold air, I retreated back into the cozy warmth. The smile didn’t disappear as I scanned emptied fields and bare fencerows beneath a clear blue sky. What could be any better? In the next mile, we came upon deer grazing in a low-lying field. The morning mist
We had learned to share the special and the unique. It had not been easy for us. We had fought “Stop!” We had resisted “Breathe!” We had missed “Enjoy!”. Finally, we determined the pace of our lives would not be determined by the speed of the day. Yep, nothing could be better than yesterday! It was the kind of day designed just for us by our Creator. It was a gift. It was the opportunity for our hearts to waltz to the
symphony of nature. God wanted us to find rest in the rush. I was wrong! There is something better than yesterday. It’s called “today”! Today is a bunch of great “yesterdays” leading up to a “new, unlimited potential, can’t wait to see what happens” day. I know I’m just a dog, but I’m a pretty smart one. It was a great ride yesterday. I can’t wait for one today. As my dad says, “LivExceptionally Today”, Cinch My Blue Heeler, Cinch, passed away on Memorial Day. He had been with me almost eight years. Many of you knew him. I get it; really, I do. He was just a dog and he is gone. He will not come back and death pushes us to move on, but he taught me so much. He was a talented writer (much more than me) and his works live beyond his last breath and into his legacy. Some of it was published. Some of it was just for me. Barks TheNHip B its Hangout Word must be getting out that this is the hot new spot to hangout. Or should I say, the best place for stray critters to show up. In the past few months we have had a few faces show up here at the farm. From stray dogs to abandoned cats (Conway Kitty) and kittens, they show up on the doorstep and the lady that lives here feels obliged to feed them and find them a home. I can’t say that her good heart upsets me - I mean, if I were one of those critters, I would want to end up somewhere like this. It’s just that I have to share the attention I get with

these part-timers until they find a permanent home. It also burns me up that the person responsible for them to begin with dropped them off in the middle of the country. But, then I guess who would want to have a person with that capability as the person responsible for your well being anyway? It’s a catch 22 - stay with a creep or be dumped by a creep to fend for yourself and hope you wander onto a farm with a nice lady like mine. I am pretty blessed. And so are Miss Maybelline and Freckles. We all got to come here as youngsters and get to stay and call this

Well, living in Indiana has it’s benefits....but I am not going to talk about those today. It is December in Indiana and that means it is COLD! This means that I have to deal daily with doggie-wear...not only for myself, but for the fashion diva of the ranch - Princess Annabelle. Anytime we go out for more than a potty break - doggie wear is inevitable. Since I haven’t much choice in the matter, I have learned to be completely happy in my minihorse-type blanket. I have had it for several winters and it is your basic blue quilted-type blanket with black trim and straps....nothing fancy. It is very functional and allows me to run and chase rodents without too much trouble. It also keeps me toasty warm while I am out in the barn on a cold December day. Needless to say, I wear it without any qualms. Princess “Hoity Toity” Annabelle is a totally different story. She will not settle for your basic mini-horse-type blanket. Oh, no. Just ask her, she is way above functional. She pitches a puppy fit and starts biting at it and trying to pull it off the minute that one of the people begin putting it on her. If she doesn’t like it, she won’t wear it. She is waaaay to picky about her doggie-wear if you ask me. She doesn’t like the
place home. And really. it’s not so bad sharing my sunning spots and a little attention with a critter who hasn’t known that security. I mean what kind of a creep would I be (or the lady be) if we just chased them on down the road? I know you don’t get to see the tenderhearted Bella very often, but it needs said - we are a commitment. If you can’t make the commitment, don’t bring us home - or if something drastic changes in your life, make arrangements - not a drive to the country. I can’t even imagine how scary that would be. Until next month, I’ll be hanging out with the parttimers (at my home),

blankets, she doesn’t like sweaters..... if it isn’t pink and fuzzy and “princessy” - she declines - in her own spoiled little black bark box way. I do however have to admit that it is comical watching the people try to dress the little fashion diva doggie. They’ll put a blanket or sweater on her and as soon as they turn around to bundle themselves up, she is in a pile on the floor with fuzz in her teeth as she attempts to remove or destroy her outfit - protesting their choice of doggie wear. Then the battle is on. They put one on, she takes it off....then another, then another. It is funny, but it gets tiring waiting on her to agree to wear something. If you ask me, they should just let her go outside and freeze her long little ears for a few hours.... she might change her tune the next time a functionally warm blanket is the choice of the day for her. But no, they would rather add to her ever-growing wardrobe. Pink jackets, fleece pullovers and fuzzy-necked frilly doggie clothes are lying in her overflowing basket on the back porch. And guess who gets all of her rejects..... yours truly. That is right... “if she won’t wear it, Bella will.” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that lately. I was totally fine with
my functional blanket, now I am wearing girly doggie sweaters....the outside dogs chuckle at me when I am not looking, I know they do. But I don’t care, if girly is just as warm as functional, then bring it on, I won’t complain. I guess there is one benefit of living in Indiana in the winter - snoozing in front of the fireplace.
