LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
f you read what Bella has to say this month, you’ll know how dusty it has been here this last month or so at the farm. I think there has been an invisible shield over us keeping the rain from coming our way. It has went all around us on multiple days, but missed us each time. Our theme song for the blue tooth speaker each night has fittingly been, “Kick the Dust Up.”
We aren’t showing as much lately since our kids are in sports and school activities, but we continue to ride at home and keep our horses fit. I think we appreciate the time spent on horseback more these days. For me it is my little “get away” in the evenings. I get to play cowgirl and get away from the day to day stress of work and the responsibilities of life. Of course, I look forward to the shows we make it to and the friends we get to catch up with when we are there! Horse friends are such a blessing! You can go years without seeing them and it’s like you haven’t missed a beat! Until next month.... kick up some dust... either at home just getting away from the stress or at a horse show chasing cans and catching up with old friends....and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! Cell Phone While Riding linds I love to have my cell phone on me when I’m riding - linked to a bluetooth speaker so I can jam out :-) However, I just got the iPhone 6 Plus which is too big to fit in my pockets :( How do y’all carry the bigger phones when you ride? Three 4 Luck Stuff it down my pants. Lph88311 I have seen a lot of girls rubber band them to the saddle horn. Not ideal if you are running, but for exercising and slow work it seems to work well Jenbabe I use a Flip Belt. SmokinGirlie I just got the best carrier, great quality and inexpensive ! It is absolutely pointless IMO if you are riding alone to have it attached to your saddle. If Sparky loses his crap, you get tossed and need emergency help - Sparky still has your phone. Also why I refuse to have a phone that doesn’t fit in my pocket. My 6s is as big as I’ll go, Apple will lose a customer next time I need a phone if they get any bigger. want2chase3 This made me laugh... but you are absolutely right on! They make a carrier that you can wear around your thigh. SmokinGirlie That made me laugh too! I do like my carrier that is on my saddle, I never ride alone. Last time I did that Sparky slipped in mud and fell on me breaking my leg. Ha!
cowgalsissy I shove it in the front of my jeans using my T shirt to keep it from sliding down. If I hook it to the saddle and something bad happens more than likely the saddle and I will be in two different places.....
OhMax I ride alone a lot on 60 acres of cow pasture, or even just when I ride on our arena you can’t see it from the house, there’s no telling how long I could lay there if I come off! I never ride colts without someone at least outside to hear me holler, but all of my most recent falls have been bad steps, not misbehavior. Glad I could provide a giggle
OhMax Figure out a way to carry it on your person if you ride alone. A belt clip, there’s some leg bands out there, flip belt, etc.
BigStarBound Otterbox case and clip it to the saddle is what I do.. Only time I’ve every dropped it is when I didn’t put it in the clip, but slid it in my hoody pocket.

I’ve used it for other things when I want to be hands-free as well. I am also hoping that on hot days it helps sweat off the muffin top! classicpotatochip I band mine to the front of my horn. ccarpe18 I typically put mine in my boot & almost never feel it there. (Yes I have done the dumb blonde & gone crazy looking for it LOL) turtleaut I always wear a sports bra and stick my phone right in the front of it. It stays put and honestly I don’t even notice it anymore. I figured it’s best to stick it somewhere on your body versus saddle because if something happens your saddle will most likely still be with your horse while you are on the ground. In the winter I wear coveralls when I ride and they have a zipper pocket that I put my phone in. Timber Creek I had a super cute leather phone case for my iphone 3 but didn’t fit my iphone 6. I bought a plain black one at
Menards for under $10 I think. It clips to my belt/pants and stays on when I run barrels. AllAroundRider I am actually the maker of the one’s Smokin’ Girlie posted. I originally designed them for sitting all day at the ranch rodeo’s when it was really inconvient to go back to the trailer to check my phone and uncomfortable to have it shoved in my pocket while riding. There obviously I am not worried about my horse leaving me without a way to call someone but I do ride at home by myself and my arena has no fence so I just tie it around my anklestill easy to get it in or out but there if one of the kids decide to part ways with me iloveequine40 I don’t ride with my phone bc I don’t want to be bothered but I rarely ride without another human nearby. If you’re worried about accidents or mishap just get a life alert bracelet like advertised for the elderlyw hen they fall and can’t get up Racer4eva I have a clip i got from TSC that my iphone 5 fits in. Velco shuts and clips to belt. Ended up getting my mom one as well because the phone never falls out.

Bling It On! The first ever “Bling It On Futurity” was held at the 4th annual Barrels
and Bling Memorial barrel race over the July 4th weekend at C Bar C Expo Center in Cloverdale, Indiana. With over $20,000 in added money and prizes, including saddles to both the Young Guns and Youth Barrels on Saturday, drew an exciting crowd. Participants from 11 states showed up and over 1800 runs were clocked, including 42 Pee Wee and Young Guns! Summer Pauly on Peppy’s Vertical Bar clocked the fastest time of the weekend earning the 11 year old the Fastest Time Saddle. Jimmy Cagle aboard Togies Red Cat, by Red Storm Cat, was the Bling It On Futurity Average winner netting him a new saddle as well.

PeeWees and Young Guns were split this year, giving the lead line kids extra chances at awards. Each division won a Barrels & Bling Halter made by Chic Cowgirl Tack & Supply. Each Young Gun divisional winners received B&L Saddles. It’s pretty exciting to see kids win their first saddle!
This year’s K.I.S.S. (Kentucky Indiana Speed Stallions) incentive money for the Saturday Open Barrel Class payout for the $1500 was as follows: 1st place in the 1D congratulations goes to a KISS Stallion Himself, Fiery French Bullion who ran a 15.014. All proceeds from each Barrels and Bling go to people with Cystic Fibrosis. No one has a guarantee of tomorrow, but those with CF seem to have less of a chance….There is no cure. Last years’ recepeints Tyler, 19 and Rosie 15, both had double lung transplants due to the decline of their lung functions. Both use the money to mark something off their bucket lists. Thank goodness for the kindness of barrel racers as both have passed away from complication of those transplants. By marking those items off their bucket lists they made life long memories for their families, which is, in the end, all they have left.

Davis, who is fairly new to the Quarter Horse racing business, owns a heating and cooling business and owns and operates a training center near his home base in Borden, Ind. He was quick to credit others for the successful season that his stable has recorded thus far at Indiana Grand.
Heisasgoodasheis Gets the Nod in the $191,400 Gordon Mobley Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 18, 2016 – There was a lot to celebrate for the win with Heisasgoodasheis in the $191,400 Gordon Mobley Futurity Saturday, June 18 at Indiana Grand. The win was the first stakes win for owner-trainer-breeder Joe Davis as well as the first stakes win for Jockey Rolando Pina. The finish of the race was a lot better for Heisasgoodasheis than the start. Being the last to load in the gate, Heisasgoodasheis was reluctant to enter his post 10 slot and extra assistant starters were summoned to coax the two-year-old sorrel son of Chilled Corona into the gate. But once he was in and the bell rang, it was an opportunity for Heisasgoodasheis to bring home a stakes win. A trio of contenders along the inside, including HH Kentucky Krome and Harold Collins got the first call from Track Announcer Bill Downes and those three looked to be the ones to watch until the wire. However, the outside horses began to surge late in the race, led by Heisasgoodasheis, who was declared the winner following a long photo. Kid Cartel and Fernando Fonseca-Soto was a nose back in second followed by Jess Jace and Rodney Prescott for third. Only one and one-quarter lengths separated the first six finishers of the 10-horse field at the wire. “I was shocked,” said Pina, a native of Mexico who now calls Indiana home. “I didn’t think he won it. But once I started sending him, he really took off.” Heisasgoodasheis is now two for three in his brief career. His earnings increased to more than $110,000 with the win in the Gordon Mobley. He was the second choice of the field, paying $6.00, $4.20, $2.80 across the board. The time of the 300-yard sprint was :15.730 seconds. “We’ve been second in five or six stakes over last year and this year, including second in the race before (with CB Come Fly With Me) in the Jaguar Rocket,” said Davis. “This is the first stakes win for both of us. It’s sure a great feeling.”
“The biggest thing on this win is that if it wasn’t for the grooms and Rolando and everyone else involved, we wouldn’t be having this success,” said Davis. “Everybody pitches in.” Heisasgoodasheis was part of the long-term plan for Davis, who purchased the mare, Sheisassheis, from Chris Duke. The mare was bred to Duke’s stallion, Chilled Corona, who now stands in Texas. Davis has continued to work with his latest start on his farm, including time in the gate. “We stood him (Heisasgoodasheis) at the house and he walked right in,” said Davis. “We had a little bit of trouble getting in the gate in the trial,” added Pina. “He is always a little bit shy about going in. He was fine at home but I think the pressure of being up here gets to him.” Heisasgoodasheis has been one of several stars from the Davis Stable in 2016. To date, the stable has won nine races, placing Davis in second place behind Randy Smith. The win aboard Heisasgoodasheis was also significant for Pina, placing him atop the leading Quarter Horse standings for 2016 at Indiana Grand with 11 wins, his first time to hold that position in his young career. “This is the biggest win for me and the first stakes race win,” said Pina. “And, it’s so good because it’s the first for Joe (Davis) too. We literally started our careers at the same time.” Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 PM EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 PM. The 120-day season runs through Saturday, Oct. 29. Thursday racing will be offered during the months of July and August from July 7 through Aug. 25 with a post time of 2:05 PM. DNA Dales Prospect received a hefty paycheck for his win in the Jaguar Rocket, increasing his career bankroll to nearly $75,000 in only two career starts. The Indiana bred Quarter Horse is now two for two in his brief career. Of two Quarter Horse stakes races on the card, Smith saddled five horses, including three in the Jaguar Rocket. He finished first and third, also training Chics Dirty Secret. His other entrant, WH Secretive, ridden by Shanley Jackson, was pinched back at the start and was not a factor.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 18, 2016 – An outside post proved to be the perfect place for DNA Dales Prospect to display his talents on the track at Indiana Grand Saturday, June 18. The two-year-old Coronas Prospect gelding roared to the lead in the late stages to take the
Ridden by Berkley Packer, DNA Dales Prospect broke without incident and was amongst the pack as the field of nine moved through the early stages of the 300 yard dash. Halfway through the race, it appeared DNA Dales Prospect extended his stride and kicked into gear for a strong finish, running down CB Come Fly With Me and Rolando Pina by a neck at the finish line. Chics Dirty Secret and Rodney Prescott was one-half length back in third. DNA Dales Prospect covered the distance in a time of :15.681 seconds. “He (DNA Dales Prospect) got the lead about 100 yards in,” said Packer, who was aboard for the first time. “He ran a big race tonight.” DNA Dales Prospect was making only his second career start. He was a winner in his Jaguar Rocket trial to place himself as the favorite of the field, paying $6.00, $3.80, $2.60 across the board. DNA Dales Prospect is owned by Donna and Noel Alexander’s DNA Quarter Horses of Central Illinois. Randy Smith, Indiana Grand’s leading trainer for the third straight season, conditions the horse for the Alexanders. “We’ve had horses for them (the Alexanders) for three years now,” said Debbie Smith, Randy’s wife, who is very active with the stable. “We had this horse (DNA Dales Prospect) in Florida at the training center and we have liked him from the beginning. He’s just an awesome horse and so smart. We have nothing but good things to say about him.”
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 25, 2016 – Mavara Vegas was tough to beat at Indiana Grand last year as a three-year-old. She returned for her first start in Indiana for 2016 and was even tougher, winning the sixth running of the $49,680 Indiana Grand Classic running at a distance of 400 yards Saturday, June 25. Starting from post two, Mavara Vegas and Jockey Alejandro Luna had a good start and was in the action early, holding their own on the inside as the field got rolling. Halfway through the race, the chestnut daughter of FDD Dynasty began to get more aggressive and began to pull away, reaching the finish line by one length over Scandalia and Rolando Pina along the inside. A Royal Fling and Omar Reyes rounded out the trifecta. “After Indiana last fall, we took her (Mavara Vegas) to Florida and she got injured,” said Trainer Sacramento Chavez. “It took us the whole meet to get her back and she didn’t run well there. But she’s one of those types that is born to run. She’s very happy when she goes out to the track. In fact, she’s mean in the stall and very tough to work with. She just likes to work and loves to run.”

TF Jess a Leader was the second winner on the program for Trainer Sacramento Chavez, who was also a winner with Mavara Vegas in the Indiana Grand Classic. TF Jess a Leader is owned by Jose Chavez. The Louisiana bred gelding won his first race of 2016 in his third outing, and the win marked only his second career trip to the winner’s circle. TF Jess a Leader, a longshot in the field, paid $39.20, $15.00 and $5.80 across the board. Mavara Vegas is now four for five lifetime over Indiana Grand’s racetrack. She pushed her career earnings to more than $167,000 for owner Alejandro Medina. Mavara Vegas, the favorite of the field, paid $3.60, $2.80, $2.40 across the board. The winning time of the Indiana Grand Classic was :19.806 seconds, the third stakes win for Mavara Vegas at Indiana Grand. It also marks a new stakes record for the race, besting last year’s record time of :19.890 seconds turned in by Beach Runner and Jose Beltran. “She (Mavara Vegas) broke in front and she went easy tonight,” said Luna, who has been riding the mare in her last few starts at Remington Park. “It’s tough down there (Remington Park). She was good here tonight.”

Chic was three lengths back of the winner, a respectable first start back. “We are very pleased with her (First Class Chic) performance,” said Riley. “We are pleased she stayed up there with them in between horses. She showed us she’s in good enough shape to race, too. We’ll just try it again.” The feat of being back in action for the trio is far more important than a trip to the winner’s circle. That will come with time. “She (First Class Chic) fought all the way,” said Gerard. “She’ll do better next time. We are just glad to be back.”

making their first start back after a horrific head-on collision on Route 9 south of Greenfield, Ind. Gerard and Riley had driven to Indiana Grand the morning of Oct. 5, 2015 for their normal training routine and loaded up to head home to their farm in Mechanicsburg, Ind., about an hour north of the track. On the trip home, Carter was driving the truck and trailer when a car, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line, hitting them head-on and knocking them down a hill. Riley was hurt the worst, suffering a broken back in nine places, a broken neck, numerous broken ribs and a crushed foot. Gerard suffered a broken arm and the then two-year-old filly in the trailer had cuts and swelling in several portions of her body. Luckily for First Class Chic, the trailer stayed upright and didn’t overturn. Both she and Riley had to be extracted from the truck and trailer by the “Jaws of Life.”
“I’ve always liked and used the colors blue and white,” said Riley. “Donna (Gerard) is a cancer survivor and she always used pink and white. So when we got together we made a compromise. Our colors are now pink, white and blue. We use the white to separate the pink and blue so it doesn’t look like purple. But our colors mean a lot to us and stand for something.” First Class Chic was decked out in pink, white and blue, from the silks to her bridle to her blinkers. It was truly a milestone day for the stable, and hopes are high that the pink, white and blue silks will be visible in the winner’s circle sometime soon at Indiana Grand.
Parti Favor Earns First Stakes Win in $40,000 Bradford Stakes
Riley, who has long been a guiding force in Indiana Quarter Horse racing, recovered as did Gerard. Their filly, a homebred daughter of First to Shake Six out of Classy Chic in Vegas, was the last to get the okay. “I raced her mother (Classy Chic in Vegas) and won with her up at Hoosier Park before she retired,” said Riley, who won the very first parimutuel Quarter Horse race in the state of Indiana in 1997 at Hoosier Park. “This filly is just like her mom. You could clone them.” First Class Chic had one start at two in June last year. She was on the comeback trail to making another start when the accident occurred. “We didn’t push her,” said Gerard, who serves as the filly’s trainer. “We’ve been taking our time. We made sure she was ready to go back into training and we had her x-rayed and scanned before we started back. This was a big day for all of us.” First Class Chic, ridden by Jose Beltran for the first time, broke from post six. The three-year-old sorrel filly broke in mid pack and maintained her position throughout to finish sixth. Born to Beatcha and Alex Estrada won the 250 yard dash in a time of :13.515 seconds. Starting from the outside post 10 in the full field, Parti Favor has been on his game this year, coming into the race off two impressive allowance wins at Indiana Grand. stakes winners and divisional champions for the state of Indiana in the field. That didn’t hinder Parti Favor one bit. Pina had Parti Favor focused as soon as the gates opened and it took him a few strides to get into gear, but once he did, he began to close in on the front runners. So did Pistolpacking Pepsi and Jose Beltran. “I saw him (Pistolpacking Pepsi) and was watching him,” said Pina. “But I still had plenty of horse and kept him (Parti Favor) pretty snug until late in the race.” Known for his closing speed, Pistolpacking Pepsi was getting revved up halfway through the race and had his sights set on front runner Stinkin Rich and Cristian Esqueda. Parti Favor was closing with every stride as well and in the end, he caught up and passed both of them to win by one and three-quarter lengths in a time of :19.600 seconds. The time was just shy of his track record performance in his last outing when he won in :19.467 seconds. Pistolpacking Pepsi was second followed by WH Design By Dash and Harold Collins, who moved up to third following a disqualification of Stinkin Rich for third. “This little horse (Parti Favor) amazes us time after time after time,” said Davis, who also owns the four-year-old son of PYC Paint Your Wagon. “And if it wasn’t for everybody involved in our operation, we wouldn’t be where we are. It’s a team effort.” Parti Favor paid $4.20, $2.80, $2.60 across the board as the favorite in the field. He is now three for six in 2016 and boosted his career earnings to more than $100,000 with the win. The Bradford Stakes was the first stakes win for Parti Favor and only the second stakes win for Davis and Pina, who earned their first career stakes victory together earlier this summer at Indiana Grand. It was also a new stakes record for the Bradford, besting the time turned in by Finche and Oscar Delgado during the 2013 race in a time of :19.640. “Like Joe says, this horse (Parti Favor) is so little but he has such a big heart,” added Pina, who is currently leading the Quarter Horse standings for jockeys this season. Davis and Pina also won the first two races of the evening, which were trials for the Heartland Futurity. Venita Two won the first while Gran Cup took home the top spot in the second race. Gran Cup qualified for the final, but Venita Two was the 11th fastest and will not advance to the final of the Heartland Futurity set for Saturday, July 30. Four more all-Quarter Horse racing nights are slated for 2016 at Indiana Grand. The remaining dates, all Saturday evening programs, are Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8 and Oct. 22. More than half of the stakes program still remains for the sprinters in Indiana during the last half of the meet. In all 20 stakes races with purses in excess of $1.5 million are offered for Quarter Horse stakes during the mixed meet at Indiana Grand.
Captain BD Surprises in $73,600 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 9, 2016 – Captain BD made his second start over Indiana Grand’s racecourse an impressive outing, rolling out early and never relinquishing his lead to win the $73,600 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Saturday, July 9. The stakes race was one of the highlights of the second all-Quarter Horse racing nights at the track in 2016. Starting from post seven in the full field of 10, Captain BD and Jockey Jose Davila came out of the gate clean and quickly went to the lead. The duo kept a strong hold of the top spot during the 400-yard dash and just when the late closers looked like they might be chasing down the leaders, Captain BD kicked into another gear and scored the mild upset by one and one-quarter lengths to win his first stakes of his career. TF Jess a Leader and Jose Beltran came up for second followed by Beyondthegamewagon and Shanley Jackson, who finished a neck back in third. “I’m really excited to win this race and really excited about this horse (Captain BD),” said Davila, who is one of five jockeys that was recruited to Indiana from the Hialeah circuit this year. “I knew going into the race that he was good and had confidence to win.” Davila has been aboard Captain BD three times now, winning two and finishing second once. The three-year-old son of Captain Courage is now three for five in 2016, with no finish worse than third. He more than doubled his career earnings with his win in the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby, now possessing in excess of $66,000 for owner David Gonzalez. Victor Gonzalez earned his first win of the meet with Captain BD. “This is a very honest horse,” said Gonzalez of Captain BD. “We tried him in the trials and he ran good. He came back tonight and ran good and we were lucky enough to get the win tonight.” Captain BD paid $16.20, $6.60, $6.00 across the board. The time of the race was :19.587 seconds, a new stakes record, besting the mark set by Mavara Vegas and Jockey Jose Ruiz in a time of :19.807 seconds.

Beach Bum Eddie was quiet in the gate and waited for the signal to go. He rallied hard to the lead and never looked back, winning the event by one and one-quarter lengths in a time of :19.734 seconds. Coco Beach and Berkley Packer easily bested the rest to finish second while Wrs Kool Bob and Shanley Jackson rounded out the trifecta. Beach Bum Eddie has three wins in four starts for 2016 and just missed the title in his last start in the $90,000 Harley Greene Derby. Vampire Rose Turns in Quickest Trial for Heartland Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 9, 2016 – Four trials were included on the all-Quarter Horse racing night at Indiana Grand for the upcoming $50,000 Heartland Futurity Final set for Saturday, July 30. Of the 31 two-year-olds, Vampire Rose and Jockey Smitty Lee Oxendine had the quickest time to top the list of 10 that will vie for the final title. Entering the gate for the fourth and final trial, Vampire Rose and Oxendine started their journey from post six. They were among the contenders early on in mid pack of the 300-yard dash as Wrs Whoseyourdaddy and Berkley Packer led the way. Vampire Rose made up some ground late in the race to hit the wire just a head before Wrs Whoseyourdaddy for the win, the first in the young career of the two-year-old daughter of Dashin MVP. Wrs Whoseyourdaddy finished second a neck ahead of Jess An Oak Tree LBH and Rolando Pina. The time on the tote board was :15.535 seconds. Trained by John McCreary, Vampire Rose was making only her third career start. She is owned by Cooter Daniel and paid $18.00, $6.40, $3.60 across the board. Beach Bum Eddie impressive in Blue River Derby Trials SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 9, 2016 – It was a quick gate to wire performance for Beach Bum Eddie and Jockey Cesar Esqueda. IBRA Finals Short Go will be for IBRA Qualifiers only. OPEN, YOUTH, MASTERS, ADULT – All members are welcome to run at national finals on any horse. Short Go qualification is reserved for those who are
considered State Qualifiers. A State Qualifier is any horse and rider who has earned 100 points or more together. Any member who is ranked in the top 5 of a division in any class is considered a Top Dog in the respective class. Wild Card holders are those who have won a Wildcard at a Preferred Show, State Finals or through a State Fundraising Auction within the current season or the previous two. Please note that Top Dogs and Wild Card holders are State Qualifiers who have earned additional privileges. To maintain State Qualifier, Top Dog or Wild Card status you must pre-enter. • $30,000 OPEN - $10,000 added each go-round and Short Go Finals. • $5,000 YOUTH - $2,500 added in long go & Short Go Finals. • $5,000 MASTERS - $2,500 added in long go and Short Go Finals. • $5,000 ADULT - $2,500 added in long go and Short Go Finals. *For Class qualification information including age please see the IBRA Rule Book Finals Short Go Qualifications (Open, Youth, Masters, Adult): In order to maintain your State Qualifier, Top Dog or Wild Card status you must pre-enter prior to Sept. 9th. This is a Post Mark and/or Credit Card deadline. All entries post marked or called in after Sept. 8th will be considered non-qualifiers and will not be permitted to run in the Short Go regardless of placement in the Long Goes. The Top 10 Qualifiers of each Long Go round will advance to the Short Go Round. Top Dogs and Wildcard Holders who do not place in the Top 10 will also advance to the Short Go in recognition of their outstanding performance during the regular season. State Qualifiers who did not earn a Top Dog position or a Wild Card in the regular season must place in the Top 10 of a Division in one of the Long Go Rounds to advance to the Short Go. Wild Card holders and Top Dogs will not be skipped when counting the Top 10 in the First Go Round. In the Second Go Round only those who placed in the Top 10 of a division in the First Go Round will be skipped when selecting Qualifiers from the Second Go Round to move on to the finals. Qualifications for Sponsors / Directors Race - Must be a State Director or Representative or have sponsored $100 or more in your state or to IBRA. A family member or employee may ride in place of the Director or Sponsor. Anyone who enters this class who is not qualified will be disqualified and forfeit any money or prizes they win and be fined $100. Division winner Buckles will be awarded to the winners of the Sponsor/Directors Race in appreciation of the contestants sponsorship and/or service to the IBRA. Thank you Jennifer Butcher for your sponsorship of these buckles. Rollovers: Rollovers will be permitted as follows: Sponsor/Directors Race to the Guaranteed Race, Open 1st Go to Masters Long Go, Open 2nd Go to Adult Long Go. Rollovers must be designated at time of entry. Refunds, Rider Changes & Substitutions: 70% refund minus processing fee will be given with doctor or veterinarian release. No refunds after September 23rd. Pre-Entry Draw will be posted Sept.30th. After the pre-entry deadline substitutions will only retain their qualifier status if the sub is made due to death or injury and they are subbing to a horse that they own or have received points on. Sale of a horse and/or subbing in a borrowed horse will result in loss of status. All subs or rider changes after deadline will incur a $50 change order fee. Dress Code: “2016 Dress Code Applies.” Cowboy Hat / Helmet, Western Boots, Collared and button up shirts required. $5 Hat Fine that will be applied to charity. Stalls and Hookups: Stalls and Hookups are reserved by payment only. Portables stalls may be brought in but only if Pre-Entries warrant it. Please make your Stall reservations as early as possible. Stalls will be refunded based upon our ability to resell. All stalls will be inspected daily. If a stall is found to be out of order you will receive a warning tag and you will be called to your stall. If the stall is not tended to immediately we will have it cleaned for you. There will be a $25 cleaning charge. The stall will be stripped and two bags of shavings added back to the stall at $7 each. Coggins and Health Papers: All Coggins must have been completed within one year of the show. Health papers must have been complete within two weeks of the show. A visual examination will accompany the inspection of your health papers and Coggins upon your arrival. If your horse is snotty, coughing or showing signs of a cold or sickness you will be asked to have the animal inspected by an onsite vet. International Riders: International members are required to qualify for Nationals via the same rules as domestic members. Depending upon the circumstance International riders may be able to lease or borrow horses to compete at Nationals. The members individual circumstance will be reviewed by home office in making these exceptions. Holding Pen: Only the current drag of five horses will be allowed in the holding pen. You must have checked in and be present in holding pen prior to the start of your drag or you will be scratched. ***Contestants with unruly horses, please keep this in mind prior to your entry. IBRA has the right to disqualify any uncontrolled horse and/or a rider that may present a danger to other contestants, abusing their horse with a whip, hand, or spurs or that have not began their run within one minute of the time the rider has been called. Membership: Must be a current member or have been a member of the 2016 season to compete. * Added Money: Open, Youth, Masters and Adult will be adjusted on a percentage based on number of entries. Youth, Masters and Adult will be equal to a $1,000 per 100 entries. Ex: 150 entries $1,500, 200 entries $2,000 maximum of $2,500. Open will be doubled with a maximum of $10,000 added each go. Added Money in Long Go will be matched for Finals Short Go. Drug Policy: All Entries are subject to testing and meeting the requirements set in place by the IBRA. **For further explanation of the terms and qualification guidelines listed here please see the IBRA rulebook. If you need further clarification please call or email the home office. Exhibitions Sign Up: Exhibitions are $5 each. Write the number of exhibitions in the requested time slot. There will be 25 exhibitions sold per half hour. A Draw number will be assigned to your exhibitions and posted online when each time slot is full. If you enter multiple exhibitions in one time slot they will be run back to back. Any missed exhibitions will not be refunded or moved. There will be a 60 second time limit. If you go over the time limit you will be asked to leave the arena and fined an additional $5. This fine is not meant to cause hardship but ensure that everyone gets their exhibitions in.

National Pole Bending Association Championships I
t was a record breaking year at the National Pole Bending Association Championship show! Records broken included the number of horses, riders, stalls sold, banquet tickets sold and fun! An astounding $60,000 was paid out in cash and prizes! Kicking the weekend off, for the first time ever, we sold out of tickets for the awards banquet.
Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a great honor for those involved in the industry and this year we were able to recognize a few outstanding individuals. This year we recognized “Country Boy Lee” and “Ponjet’s Bob Jr.” as 2016 horse inductees. The exhibitor inducted in to the Hall of Fame was Brannon Riley (left), who went on to run the FASTEST TIME of the ENTIRE weekend!
Mike Hulsinger and Jones Is On Fire took the victory in our second annual Neon Race. The Saturday Night Shootout brought even more fun classes to compete in! From the dog costume class to the classic stick horse race, fun was had by all ages! Our Future Stars class allowed our younger competitors to take the course and get their chance at a Championship buckle. Finishing out the night was the race everyone had been waiting for, The WORLDS FASTEST POLE BENDING RACE.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame as Breeder, was Layman Priddy. Terry Bransteter was awarded the honorable Stephanie Marcum Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Other awards given were the Fastest Time of 2015, ran by Jimmy Bryant, and Outstanding Youth awards, given to Morgan Jones and Channing McWilliams. After the banquet concluded the show began with the Sponsors and Directors race won by State Director Wendy Thornberg. Next our youngsters took stage in the Kindergarten race exclusively for horses who are three years of age. Glen Law and TES Redneck Alli ran a 20.467 to take the win. The night concluded with our fan favorite, the Neon Glow in the Dark Race, where horses and riders navigate through a neon lit course in the dark! Riders dress themselves and their horses up in everything they can find that lights up; from out-lining breast collars, to horses’ boots, to even the riders themselves!

Nathan Peoples (above) and Lightning Sky Bar were crowned our 2016 World’s Fastest Pole Bender with a 19.654. Reserve Champion went to Brandon Knight riding Git Go Gone. Rounding out the Top 5: Brock Bawel and Wait N On Fame, Alexa McWilliams and Lightning Sugar Bell, and Trent Tobin aboard TT Redneck Ninja. Congratulations to all winners in this incredible class of outstanding competitors. Sunday concluded our second go’s of each class and secured the average title winners. First Go of Open Poles winner was Brock Bawel. First Go Amatuer winner Colleen Hershey. First Go Futurity winner was Brannon Riley. First Go of Youth winner Brock Bawel. Second Go winners: Open- Nathan Peoples Amateur -Wendy Thornburg FuturityBrannon Riley Youth- Brock Bawel. This year we had two Clean Sweep winners. The exceptional achievement of winning both go’s of the same class and the average is no easy accomplishment. These two riders were Brock Bawel (top left) in the youth class and Brannon Riley in the futurity aboard Dans Flaming Venture where he also ran the FASTEST TIME of the entire weekend with a 19.352!!
NPBA Our Open and Youth Average winners were each awarded a trophy saddle to take home. Open average winners were as follows: 1D Brandon Knight (middle left) and Git Go Gone; 2D Misty Berg; 3D Chuck Givens; 4D Callie Jo Friedt. Amauter Average winner was Kathy Bawel (bottom left) and her son Brock took home the Youth Average win. Futurity average winner was Brannon Riley. Brock Bawel and Sizzlin Redneck won the Open Poles in the KISS Stallions incentive side pot. Another year in the books and we are already making plans and improvements for next year. We thank everyone involved to make this show a continued growing success from the Board members to State Directors, to volunteers and of course our amazing Sponsors. Anhidrosis is defined as a decreased ability to sweat in response to increased body temperature. Failure to sweat has been described in both horses and man and it manifests primarily in to hot, humid climates, like many southern states. It is an important problem particularly in performance horses because thermoregulation is mainly accomplished by sweating. In the horse, between 65-70% of body heat is lost via the evaporation of sweat. A humid environment further decreases efficiency of sweat evaporation and cooling of the horse.
Anatomy & Physiology Sweat glands are densely packed in horse skin (810 glands per cm2), primarily exiting to the skin surface at a hair follicle. These tubular, coiled glands have a rich blood supply and numerous nerves are found in close proximity to the glands. The sweat produced has a number of components, including proteins, electrolytes and significant amounts of water. The proteins found in sweat are primarily glycoproteins, surfactants and proteins associated with skin defense. Electrolytes (including sodium, potassium, and chloride) are found at a higher concentration than blood, particularly potassium. Various syndromes have been previously suggested to explain the cause of anhidrosis, including hypothyroidism, low chloride concentrations and abnormally elevated epinephrine levels. None of these associations have been satisfactory except that decreased urinary fractional excretion of chloride is a consistent finding.
Prevalence Researchers have not identified any age, sex or color predisposition for developing anhidrosis. Raising foals in a hot, humid climate is not protective, as both locally-bred and imported horses may be affected.

In chronic anhidrosis cases, sweat glands ultimately atrophy. In acutely affected horses, these abnormalities are not yet present, suggesting a role for long term downregulation of beta2 adrenergic receptors on sweat glands. More recent research has shown that macrolide antibiotics (used to treat Rhodococcus infections in foals) will stop sweat production in treated foals, leading researchers to suggest that chloride transport across sweat gland cells may be reduced in anhidrotic horses as this is an effect of macrolides. This is a very early finding and is being further investigated. Epidemiologic studies have suggested a prevalence of between 2-6% of horses, though the prevalence may vary depending on the severity of climate and the quality of these studies was variable. In a recent study of non-racetrack Florida farms, 1.8% of horses were anhidrotic and 11.2% of farms reported at least one case of anhidrosis.
Diagnosis
antihistamines and Methyldopa (Aldo-Met), but has been generally unsuccessful.
Anhidrosis can often be diagnosed presumptively, based on appropriate clinical signs and examination by a veterinarian. Patients often present with increased respirations and failure to cool after exercise. In situations that should elicit copious sweating, anhidrotic horses will have minimal or no sweat production. Some areas may still sweat, which can be confusing. In chronic cases, horses develop dry flaky skin, especially on the forehead, hair loss, fatigue, anorexia and decreased water consumption. Confirmatory testing utilizing intradermal injections of epinephrine or terbutaline can be performed if the diagnosis is unclear or to evaluate treatments.
A recent study performed at the University of Florida found that acupuncture and herbal medication may have improved sweating in recently anhidrotic horses, although the effect lasted less than four weeks after discontinuing treatment. The use of this treatment requires further investigation to fully validate its usefulness, as that study yielded very equivocal findings.
Treatment There is no proven therapy for anhidrosis except moving the horse to a cooler climate. Not only does this help manage the high body temperatures, but horses are also noted to start sweating once in a cooler environment. Therefore, it is essential that non-sweaters living in Florida are carefully managed to prevent high body temperatures from occurring. Some horses will get into water sources found in their pastures such as ponds or big water troughs to cool off. Also ensure that they have constant access to cool, clean drinking water. Adjunctive feeding of electrolytes or salt mixtures (“Lite salt”) will help them maintain appropriate total body electrolyte concentrations. Many horse owners feel that various feed supplements offer relief to their horses, but this is an anecdotal observation with no research support. Other treatments are attempted with minimal evidence, including oral supplementation with dark beer, salts, vitamins/electrolytes or thyroid supplementation. Most of these are not dangerous, but also do not appear to improve the animal’s ability to sweat. Medical treatment has also been attempted with ACTH, alpha-2 agonists, prostaglandins (Lutalyse),

Conclusion Anhidrosis is a very serious syndrome affecting a substantial amount of horses in Florida and across the southeastern US. Many affected animals are no longer able to live in hot climates or be successful competition horses. Additional work is needed to better identify the specific cause of anhidrosis and will help in developing useful treatments.

Accomplishments and Goals: In my life I feel greatly accomplished in taking people’s “junk horses” and turning them into all around horses. I hope to train my new mare to be very good at reining and then move to perfecting other areas and disciplines that she does. Future plans: In the future I hope to play basketball in college but if I don’t make it there I’ll definitely want to go to a great horse college that has a riding team. Advice to fellow barrel racers: My advice to fellow barrel racers is to not focus on being the best so much as just enjoying your horse that you have that is giving you their all. Sometimes it’s not all about how fast you’re actually going it’s about how great it feels those moments you spend alone in the ring with your horse.

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life... Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Our 2015-2016 IJRA Princess, Sage Thomas took her final lap in the arena at the State Finals to wrap up a great season. We wanted to share her Farewell Speech with you. Sage did an amazing job as Princess. Tune in next month to see who will fill that big crown in the 2016-2017 IJRA season.
When I first ran for princess, I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know what my duties were, and I was only there to have fun. Now that my year has come to an end, I know that being the IJRA Princess is way more important than that. Growing up in IJRA, I have always watched the Princesses, waiting for my day to run, and waiting for my year to be the Princess. I have had so much fun being your princess, from putting on grand entries at the Elkhart County Fair and the Wells County Rodeo, to reaching out to people and companies such as The Cowboy Junkie, Cowpokes, and Lari Dee Guy for donations and being a role model for all those who look up to the IJRA Princess. I know that when I pass on the crown today, I pass it on to the next big role model in this association. I pass on the opportunities to become better at reaching out to people, making a statement, and getting others involved.

Today is the day that I will pass on the sash and crown. It’s the day that I will take my final hot lap as the IJRA Princess, and the day that I will go back to just being your average contestant. But there is one thing that won’t change. Although I will lay my title to rest, I will not stop being a role model.
I am entering my final year of IJRA, and even though I have been a member since preschool, this year has definitely been my favorite. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me out this year. I would like to thank my whole rodeo family for always helping me out with the grand entry, my parents for doing so much for me this year, and all the announcers who have helped make the grand entries even better than I could imagine. Even though I will miss being titled as the IJRA Princess, I am ready to see what the next princess will do. Thank you for making this year amazing, and help out the next IJRA Princess so her year will be as amazing as mine. We would also like to recognize our outgoing 8th Grade IJRA members. We wish all of you the best in the future as you move on to High School Rodeo.

Maci Zimmerman is the daughter of Brodie and Sherri Zimmerman. Maci just started her first freshman year at Tri-West High School. Here is what Maci had to say about her 9 years as an IJRA member. Wow! That’s the only word I can say. I absolutely cannot believe this is it, this is my last rodeo for my IJRA career. I’ve been here for 9 years and made so many memories, accomplishments, improvements in my runs and a ton of lifelong friends. Being in IJRA has made me a better person and shaped me for who I am today. It has taught me respect, shown me how to take care of my responsibilities in the arena and out of the arena. I’ve learned how to work hard, and how to be a great horseman. When I first started IJRA in Kindergarten, I was a shy little one, but thanks to little Miss Chalee Gilliland I have most definitely outgrown that. All because of this rodeo association I have become such an outgoing and positive person, and I’ve also grown a lot with all of my events. This association also gave me the chance to be a role model when I became the 2014-2015 IJRA princess, and even after that I hope that all the little cowboys and cowgirls look up to me as I move onto high school rodeo. I want to give a special thanks to my parents, Brodie and Sherri for hauling me all over the place, helping me practice, and paying my entry fees even though Cooper and I drive you both insane. I also want to thank the Gilliland family, the Petro family, the Thomas family, the Keller family, and last but certainly not least the White family for being in this association and helping me grown and learn and shaping me to be the person I have grown to be. little white horse I sincerely thank each one of you for supporting me and encouraging me and for “cheering me on”. Jack and I could never express what that has meant to us!
My name is Hanna Pickering. I am just beginning my 9th grade year at Rushville Consolidated High School. I have a great love for music and animals. I am part of the concert band and marching band at my high school. I was recently chosen to participate in the Indiana Honor Band and I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium during the 2016 Drum Corps International Finals Competition this month. I am also a 3 year member of the Rushville chapter of the FFA and I run track and field in the spring. Possibly even great than my love for music is my love of animals; and that is my focus in 4-H. In 2015, I won Reserve Grand Champion Contest Horse Intermediate Exhibitor and I was also awarded the “Outstanding Senior Exhibitor” award as well. Due to some really hard work we claimed the Grand Champion title this past July.

When I am not in school or the barn I am spending time with my family. I could not possibly do what I do without my family’s help and support. My dad Luke spends countless hours feeding my horse, cleaning up after my horse, hauling my horse, feeding me, cleaning up after me, and hauling me. He is my biggest fan and I am so grateful for him. I spend a lot of time at my family’s little grocery store. My mom and step dad try to teach my brothers and I the meaning of hard work, honesty, and success. Speaking of my brothers; I have three, Bailey, Eli, and Sam. They sure keep me on my toes but I am lucky to have them looking out for me. And we are going to add another boy to the mix this fall. A new baby brother and I am pretty excited about that. But I truly value my mom – Nikki and Zach for all they do for me. I have been a member of the IJRA since I was in 3rd grade. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to rodeo. The IJRA gave me a place to learn and try new things. It gave me the opportunity to push myself and run past the fear of failure in and environment of support and encouragement. The IJRA family has played a huge roll in my improvement and accomplishments. I couldn’t have made it to the Cinch National Finals without all the years of lessons and practice that I have gained in the IJRA. My favorite event is pole bending although I enjoy goat tying and barrels as well. I even tried my hand in ribbon roping as a runner which is harder than it looks. If I had to pick one memory that I would consider to be my favorite, I think it would be making it to the State Finals. But I love anytime I get to hang out with my rodeo friends. As my time with the IJRA comes to an end I look forward to the future. I will always cherish the time I have spent in this arena and I will take with me the lessons that I have learned here. My next adventure will be with the IHSRA and I am looking forward to it. Eventually I would like to rodeo professionally and someday make it to the IPRA Finals. But beyond rodeo I want to continue my education and my goal is to have a career in equine sciences after college. On behalf of myself and my

I will be a freshman at Smith Green Community School. My hobbies are rodeo, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. I’ve been a member of IJRA for 6 years. I’ve made good friends and great memories. I would like to thank Cory Griffiths and Matt Thomas for helping me over these past 6 years with my roping. Most of all I would like to thank my parents for all they do. National High School Rodeo Finals July 15-23rd the Indiana High School Rodeo Associations top four in each event attended the National Finals in Gillette, Wyoming. What an experience for these members! It is tough competition for these contestants to work all year who all have the same goal at the end of the season.......to qualify for National Finals. Below are some highlights and photos.
-Grace Hasler made it to the short go in Pole bending. Grace also captures the National secretary position for the High school Rodeo Association. We know Grace will do a great job in this position for the sport of rodeo. Partnership There is nothing more exciting to me than watching a well nurtured human and equine partnership exhibit their combined abilities in a show arena. I have gotten goose bumps and had my eyes fill with tears while watching everything from a cutting competition to a pee wee barrel race. There is just something spiritual about some partnerships that transcend beyond the performance for competition. Don’t get me wrong, I have also watched some talented athletes (horsemen and women) ride a well trained horse to a win. Those special athletes are also exciting to watch, but I am not talking about just any horse and rider. I am talking about those who have a special bond and those who have forged a partnership. Watching them perform, you can see there is something special at work. They may not be the fastest or the champions of the event, but they have something beyond that prize that those who pay attention can see and almost feel. Over the years I have been blessed to have had many talented equine partners to compete with in the arena. Some have been superstars, some have had a few shining moments and some have had successful careers that lasted much longer than the average barrel horse. But, there have only been a few with which I shared a special bond that was above and beyond just getting our job done well in the arena. Those few horses have a special place in my heart and my memories because we had built a partnership together. I knew what they were going to do before they did it and visa versa. When we competed, it was more like we were one being than two.
INSPIRATION
I suppose if you’ve never felt it, it could be harder to sense it from just watching, but something tells me that is not the case. I believe that anyone who is really paying attention can see those types of partnerships from the sidelines because they are genuine, authentic, tried and true. As a Christian, I wonder if people on the sidelines - whether fellow Christians or not notice my partnership with Jesus. Not that it is a competition, like I mentioned earlier, it isn’t about the fastest or the “best” team, it is about those are visible and noticeable because there is something special, genuine and real going on.

I’ve written before about spending time with Jesus like you would your horse to build the relationship. This is what helps create those partnerships that eventually become noticeable to those watching us. (Usually when we don’t even know they are watching.)
Does that mean that people will critique our “walk?” They probably will....after all we are human. But, it doesn’t mean that we should sit on the sidelines. We need to be in that arena of life. We need to be working on building our partnership with Jesus everyday!
I falter everyday in continuing to nurture my relationship with the Lord. I know I can do better. I know, but I falter anyway. It’s like time in the saddle builds your balance and timing - time spent with the Lord builds your life’s balance and more.
People are watching and they will want what we have if we are able to do the partnership justice and allow others to “feel” that there is something more going on in our “performance” than just going through the motions.
Does my faltering mean that my partnership with Him isn’t genuine? I don’t think so...I know He is always the same and when I get back in line we are a great team. I am nothing without Him...but with Him, anyone can have a great partnership.

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

The Hands on the Clock
How did you get here. Not the “where” part of here, but the “now” of here. “Here” is the current split second of time wrapped in all our thoughts, emotions, joys, and pains produced by all the split seconds before. This “here” is another inerasable, irreversible, independent entry in the journal of our life. It stands on its own, but leans against all the others. Our history is not scribbled in lead, but chiseled in stone tablets. We carry their weight with us as either a monument to accomplishment or a headstone to failure.
INSPIRATION
With each tick of the hands of time, the future becomes the present and the present becomes the past. We do not control their movement. We have no control over the movement of both hands. Both hands move independently beyond our control but each of us determines the quality of each moment individually. It is our clock, but it is bigger than we are. The clock can’t be unplugged. The batteries only die when we take our last breath. Time is never suspended. There are no timeouts. Even not choosing is choosing. We can attempt to resolve the past or cor-
rect our reactions, but there is no setting back the clock. So, what do we do when this moment is not what we hoped? How do we deal with the disappointment, loss, sadness, grief, depression of a moment? I have no explanation for why bad things happen to good people. I try to take my lumps without complaint. Usually, my problems are directly related to my choices. When good things happen, I’m blessed unexpectedly. When bad things come along, it’s nothing more than reaping what I’ve sown. But, what about the good guys, gracious ladies and innocent children, who have lived much better lives than me? How do they respond with strength, resolve, dignity? Truth is, I don’t have a clue! I guess the same character which led them to being good people is the same substance which allows them to respond so well to the circumstances forced upon them without any control. My mother had never been one to have an ill word to speak of others. Even when
she did, she said it so nicely; I didn’t even notice she was being critical. Before she died and in the clenches of the destructive forces of Alzheimer’s, she still showed a wonderful, sweet spirit. She reaches out to others in the hallways where she lived and spoke kindly to staff members about their families, who she never knew. She did not know who I was, but whoever I happened to be when I walked in the door, she asked how I’m doing. Who she was before still remained and lasted until her last moment. I wish I had the same spirit of those kind of people, who just seem to understand life does not determine the response. They choose to overcome, not be beaten. They smile when I would cry. They accept life and live. They see God and the world in such a way that living will never be taken from them by circumstances. In the end, I’m left to pray --- “God, grant me the strength to choose to live like those, who have so little in which to be happy, but find joy no matter what!” LivExceptionally, Chris

Barks Kick N Bits the Dust Up I know I’ve complained in the past about too much rain, but I am here to say “I am sorry.” I cannot remember the last time we had rain here at the farm. It has been so long that the grass is brown and crunches when I walk on it. And of course it has been HOT to boot. The ladies flowers are becoming very high maintenance and some didn’t survive...RIP. The horse pastures have sections of powdery dust that hangs in the air as they drag their toes walking through and the horse arena - OMG don’t get me started.

Miss Maybelline is oblivious to the dust...she takes her usual “follow the nose” walk around the property while the people are riding horses. Sometimes she ends up right in the middle of the arena and all of the horses - because “that’s where her nose told her to go.” The people start shooing her, to get out of the way, before she gets hurt....and either she is a slow learner or she has selective hearing (or a little bit of both), because she ALWAYS takes her sweet time moving out of the people’s way. Not me, no thanks. Horses are a lot bigger than me - in case you didn’t notice - and when they are going that fast, they probably have a hard time spotting me in all the dust they are kicking up. I’ll just keep my distance and hang out under a shade tree in a cool spot. Then I’ll say a quick doggie prayer for some rain clouds to come our way. I’m too low to the ground for all of this dust hanging around.
The people that live here don’t have a sprinkler system for their arena like some of the horse show grounds I have been to (never been a need for one here in the past) but this year, they have went as far as running hoses with sprinklers to try and keep the dust down. When a large group rides at once it is a complete dust cloud...I don’t know how they see each other, let alone the light colored barrels they like to go around. I just stay out of the way and lay low - literally - to avoid breathing the powder in the air.
Flashback with Bella
I’m thinking that I mentioned the chill factor last month....but being the persistent breed that Jack Russells are known to be.....I will mention it again this month........ Burrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!” It has been unusually cold the last few days here at the ranch and this morning when I went out for my morning business, they forgot me!! (Well, not completely, but five minutes is a long time when it is 5 degrees!) I am quick to get the “job” done when it is cold outside. Probably because I don’t ask to go out until I just absolutely cannot hold it any longer. Then it is , wham, bam, thank you ma’am......now let me back in!!
This morning, I’m not sure, but I think my “lady” got distracted with trying to get Princess Annabelle out of bed and that’s what took her so long to come back to the door and let me in. Waking “Your Highness” seems to be quite a chore lately, probably due to the cold winter days. Princess Annabelle thinks she should get to stay under the covers where it is warm and sleep as long as she wants. I am sure that the recent lack of activity has contributed to her newly found “full figure.”

Did I say Burrrrrrr............? Excerpt from Barks N Bits, Winter 2011
She has caused us to be put back on the “doggie diet.” I am getting a little tired of this program that I am forced to participate in because of my roomate. We had Thanksgiving and Christmas and there were no doggie leftovers!! Woe is me. “No ham or turkey for you this year.... you puppies are on a diet.” Merry Christmas. I did get one great Christmas present this year. Santa brought me a new doggie bed to replace the one that the Princess destroyed last year. We’ll see how long this one lasts. I am sure Annabelle was on the naughty list, but she still got a present....I think it was a “ringer” from the one lady that is craaaazy about that little black bark box...I’m sure it wasn’t from Santa Claus. If there is anything I do like about being outside when it is cold, it is when we get lots of the fluffy white stuff that the people call snow. I’ll admit that it is fun to play in the snow with the outside dogs - the running around keeps me warm - and the snow seems to make jumping and running a little more entertaining. Although, if it is too deep I have to do more hopping than running to get around.
I do not think that Princess Annabelle likes to go out in the snow. Possibly because her unproportionately short legs put her belly awfully close to the cold wet white stuff. Her tracks - or should I say “track” - is one long wide trail through the snow, there are no footprints.....use your imagination here.
