The Home’s mission is to ensure the healthy emotional, social and mental development of children at risk, their families and communities. About The Home Able to trace its roots back to 1799 and the founding of an orphanage, The Home is the oldest child welfare agency in the nation. Today, behind the quaint name, is a vibrant organization providing an array of services for children and youth from birth to age 21. In some cases, The Home acts as a place of refuge for children in our residences, but more and more we are out in the community, delivering services where they are needed most: in schools, clinics, hospitals and the homes of children and families at risk. Our portfolio of programs includes early childhood services, home- and community-based support, special education, therapeutic residential treatment, adoption, intensive foster care, and independent living for youth who have aged out of state care.

from Our Leadership Dear Friends, Although this has been a difficult year for The Home for Little Wanderers in many respects, we want to begin by saying how deeply grateful we are to our many friends who not only stood by us in these unprecedented economic times, but in many cases increased the level of their support. As a result, we were able to meet our fundraising goals. Where the year was most difficult was in the necessity to close four programs and make staff reductions; the result is a leaner agency learning to do more with less. Fiscal Year 2009 saw some radical changes at the state and federal level in the way services will be delivered to children and families. These changes call for the expansion of community-based programs, alongside services that reunify children with their families of origin or place them into foster or kinship care, and those that prepare young men and women without family support to live independently. The Home is well positioned to be a lead provider in all of these arenas.

Highlights
from FY 2009 u More than 35 boys at Longview Farm in Walpole participated in the Career Development Program to help prepare them for life beyond the residential treatment program. They held internships at local businesses, including a candy store, garden center and pizza shop. These opportunities provided much more than work experience, helping the boys to build selfesteem, develop new friendships and be a part of the community.
u The Adoption program won the 2008 MARE (Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange) Award in the category “Outstanding Use of MARE Family Registration.” During FY 2009, the program worked with 27 new adoptive families, placed 35 children in homes, legalized 14 adoptions, counseled eight expectant birth parents, and assisted 45 clients through its post-adoption program.
u At Harrington House, 90% of the children had decreased incidents of aggression and improved behavior within five months of admission and 75% were ready for discharge within eight months.
u More than 200 families with children or adolescents in psychological, behavioral, or emotional distress received in-home services to help stabilize the family through the Safe-at-Home program. Psychiatric hospital and foster home placements were avoided due to the program’s work.
u The Child and Family Counseling Center provided 14,595 units of service from third party billing, almost 2,000 more than last year, and completed psychological testing for 82 children.
u At the Knight Children’s Center, 75% of children achieved and maintained a high level of stabilized behavior, allowing them to participate in community activities such as soccer, swimming lessons, etc.

27,412 hours of support were provided by Safe-at-Home to families in crisis
26,287 hours of outpatient counseling were provided in schools and clinics
10,961 hours of therapeutic services were provided to children aged birth to three years
5,109 hours of clinical and supportive services were provided to pre-school children in daycare centers
Stories of Real Change u A seven-year-old boy and his six-year-old twin brother and sister were all back home with their mother less than a year after arriving at the Knight Children’s Center. Reports of abuse and neglect had brought these three siblings to the residential and special education program, but intensive therapy, plus support for their mother, allowed this family to be together again.
u When this teen first began receiving counseling and medication through the Child and Family Counseling Center, he was unable to focus in school, exhibited poor boundaries with peers and was disruptive in the classroom. All that began to change two years ago after some intensive therapy which helped him to address very difficult family issues and express feelings which were blocked for much of his life. He now has more self-control, has done extremely well academically and, according to his grandmother, he is “doing better at home.”
u Harrington House became a temporary safe haven for a young child who had suffered significant physical and sexual abuse, and neglect. This trauma resulted in extremely aggressive behavior that necessitated her removal from intensive foster care. During her time at the group home she made tremendous progress, was gradually able to increase the frequency of visits with her mother, and was discharged one year after admission.

u A family’s inability to accept their child’s gender identity as a female, and ensuing reports of abuse and neglect, resulted in a referral to Waltham House. This group home provides a safe and supportive living environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Although understandably hurt by all that she had been through, the teen had a good sense of her strengths. While at the program, she had two main goals: to explore her gender identity and pursue her education. Her success with both of these goals was monumental. Not only was she able to be herself in a safe and supportive setting, she graduated high school with honors, was accepted to a prominent private college, and received full tuition remission.

Making “Big Wishes” come true Even though the 2008 holiday season was a time for trimming family budgets, The Home’s supporters were there for us in full force, donating nearly $200,000 in gifts and gift cards. Artwork created by children in The Home’s care brought to life the theme of Voices & Visions 2009: “Massachusetts Landscapes.” With sections on sports, politics, community and cuisine, there was everything from an oversized paper maché Boston Cream Pie to a large, multi-media painting of the Boston skyline on display at the World Trade Center on May 27, 2009. More than 800 guests were part of The Home’s signature fundraising gala, including Board Member Lora Khederian and her husband Bob, who were greeted by Wally from the Boston Red Sox.
Swinging away for The Home In September 2008, almost 100 women came from across New England to The International in Bolton to support our newest fundraiser, the Home in One Women’s Golf Tournament. The event, which raised over $100,000 for The Home’s programs, was the brainchild of Board Member Clemmie Cash.

Dennis Eckersley and Jim Rice, MLB Hall-of-Famers and NESN commentators, hosted three children from the Knight Children’s Center in the broadcast booth and signed baseballs; the Boston Blazers held a lacrosse clinic for the kids at Harrington House and also helped out in the Toy Room; the entire Boston Celtics team threw a holiday party at their training facility, celebrating the season with 30 of The Home’s youth.
The Third Century Campaign: Building for the Next 100 Years
In FY 2009, The Home began the “soft launch” of the first major capital campaign in its history. Plans call for the construction of a new special education school and co-ed residence at The Home’s 166-acre Longview Farm in Walpole. The new facilities will accommodate the 5- to 13-year-old children currently served at the Knight Children’s Center (KCC) in Jamaica Plain. Sadly, this building, erected in 1914 and often thought of as the flagship of The Home, has long been in need of replacement. Moving the program to the expanded campus in Walpole will provide a far superior, healthier environment for the children, while at the same time creating efficiencies through shared facilities with the existing programs located there. The vacated KCC facilities, which have been serving children and families in Boston for nearly 100 years, will continue to play a key role in The Home’s comprehensive programs by becoming the centralized location for the community- and home-based services.

The Third Century Campaign presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for long-time friends and new supporters of The Home to be an integral part of our continuing legacy of caring.
