Strong families. Strong life. Every day, The Home helps children and families overcome the odds. Through vital programs and services for every stage of child and family development, our wide network of support provides a deep source of strength, making a positive impact on over 7,000 lives each year. We work with not just the children, but their families as well, helping them to grow stronger. And for the many young people in our care who do not have a family, we work with them to build other types of connections, and provide them with the tools they need to develop their own “strong life.

a letter from our leadership Dear Friends, The big news for this year was the progress of our Third Century Campaign and the ground breaking at Longview Farm in the summer of 2011. Throughout the year, every little step got us closer to realizing our dream for the children. The looks on their faces this fall when they moved into their rooms and new school made the five-year effort worthwhile. Although this was an exciting time for us, it was also tinged with sadness as we put the Knight Children’s Center in Jamaica Plain on the market. The whole year seemed to be one of “finals” for that venerable building, which has been our flagship for almost 100 years: the last Toy Room held there in December 2011; the last graduation for the kids in June; the last visit by our 102-year-old alum, who just weeks after her final visit sadly passed away. We launched two new programs during the year: Roxbury Village, providing safe, affordable housing and social supports for homeless youth; and New Start, a partnership with designers at the Boston Design Center to gather furniture from homes that are being redecorated and make it available to youth who are transitioning from foster care or group homes to independent living. At the beginning of FY 2012, we began working with Corey McPherson Nash to help us with the rebranding initiative outlined in our Strategic Plan. Corey’s extensive research determined that we should keep our name — the tremendous equity generated over 200 years of service was too valuable to give up. We updated our logo and messaging and formally launched the new brand this fall. In program operations, we introduced our agency-wide clinical practice model — Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — and all staff have been trained; our new centralized intake system is now fully staffed; and our Wellness Initiative workshop was presented at two national conferences: The Child Welfare League of America and The Children’s Bureau – 18th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, both in Washington D.C. In addition, the by-lined article “Child Welfare Agencies Have Obligation to Client’s Physical Well-Being” was published in the Social Work Today journal. It was a very busy but rewarding year and, as always, none of it would have been possible without the generous support of our friends and donors, our Board of Directors, volunteers and staff. Thank you for your continued belief in our work. Sincerely,

Joan Wallace-Benjamin, Ph.D. President and CEO

AROUND THE PROGRAMS Academic Support for College & Life (ASCL) at Bridgewater State University was officially expanded from a first-year college program to four years. As a result, students who remain at the university to pursue their degree will continue to have access to ASCL’s support services, reinforcing their continued academic, social, and emotional success and keeping them on track to graduate.

Due to the unprecedented growth of our community-based services, the Safe at Home (SAH) program was split into two teams: SAHBoston and SAH-Somerville. The Preschool Outreach Program also reported considerable growth, both in the number of children and programs served (a 25% increase over the previous year), as well as in its professional presence in the community.

In operation for just two years, The Home’s Community Service Agencies (CSA) received positive feedback from the Court Monitor on the quality of the work provided to families in the Boston region; the Park Street CSA was awarded the STAY grant to help identify best practices for engaging young adults in services offered through the Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative.

As part of their experience as students at the Academic Support for College & Life program, seven young people participated in a community service trip to Cape Verde during their winter break, working with underprivileged children and their families, as well as the elderly.

Measuring Quality 95% of parents/caregivers surveyed rated The Home’s quality of service as Very Good/Good

98% of Department of Children & Families’ workers surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that Park Street Family Networks services met their clients’ needs 100% of teachers and early childhood providers felt that they were sometimes or frequently better able to handle children’s behavior as a result of mental health consultation provided by Preschool Outreach Program clinicians

Players from the Boston Bruins stopped by to decorate cookies (and sign autographs) with some of our kids during the holiday season. These types of activities mean the world to our kids, helping them to feel special and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As part of The Home’s efforts to prepare young people for the workforce after they age out of our programs, the Southeast Campus changed the structure of its school programming to incorporate more time for electives and vocational opportunities, such as woodshop/carpentry, culinary and maintenance/groundskeeping.

Youth from our Young Adult Resource Network performed at The Foundation To Be Named Later’s Hot Stove Cool Music concert with local celebrities. Their song “Be You” was the culmination of a series of workshops with Boston rock icon Robin Lane (center), helping them tell their stories — many of them including histories of abuse, neglect, poverty and homelessness — through words and music.

Three new family-focused groups were formed at the Children’s Community Support Collaborative — Parent Council, Parenting Journey and a Sibling Group — as part of our effort to keep families in touch with the program and help them understand effective adultchild relationships.

Two youth in Intensive Foster Care — a pair of siblings — received full scholarships to college; eight children were successfully reunited with their biological families and left the program, and we assisted five families in adopting young relatives orphaned by the earthquake in Haiti.

As part of the Career Development program, a student at Longview Farm gained invaluable job experience by working at Watson’s Candies in Walpole, thanks to owner and loyal supporter Virginia Griffin. This is just one example of our supporters providing youth with the opportunity to work in the community, helping them to develop pride and self-confidence while learning important lessons about how to be a good employee.

MEASURING OUR IMPACT in days, hours & meals Child & Family Counseling Center provided 23,181 hours of individual and family therapy and 7,325 hours consultations to schools, families, etc. Group homes provided 16,811 bed days and 42,027 meals Therapeutic After School Program provided 5,048 client days of after school programming Young Adult Resource Network had 31,629 days of enrolled clients Residential/Special Education programs provided 18,181 bed days, 28,897 class days, and 72,635 meals

THE WRAPAROUND APPROACH Surrounding families with a network of support The wraparound system of care, which is practiced in many of The Home’s programs, is based on a model of service that develops plans focusing on the individual strengths and needs of members of the family. Through wraparound, families develop an effective support network, increase their sense of competence, acquire new skills for managing the special needs of their child, and have access to the resources they need to build brighter futures for themselves. Below is just one example of the hundreds of families in our care who are stronger as a result of this type of service.

“We are stable, independent, and living as part of a community.” —Family served by Park Street CSA

The Home’s Park Street Community Service Agency had been providing intensive care coordination and family support and training to a mother and her two sons in South Boston. After about two years, the case was closed due to the progress made toward the family’s vision of being “stable, independent, and living as a part of a community.” The wraparound process — which allowed for the family to be front and center in choosing services to address their prioritized needs — worked well for the mother and her sons after other methods from past service providers had failed. The family identified who would be on their care planning team and, through the Intensive Care Coordinator, developed a plan that was meaningful and effective. Where the family had once faced eviction, today they have stable housing and a much stronger sense of security.

6

Where the older son once was frustrated that he could not read, today he has been assessed correctly with Dyslexia and receives appropriate school-based supports. Where the boys were bored and frustrated after school and anxious about their futures, today they play sports, complete their homework daily, and one was even placed on honor roll. The process was so rewarding for the whole team (family members, two outpatient therapists, academic mentor, in-home behavioral team, community support provider, in-home therapy team and therapeutic mentors), that they decided to continue their monthly meetings even after their transition from our services. More and more, the wraparound process is recognized as being most effective for families in identifying and benefiting from services, as well as increasing self-sufficiency.

ACHIEVEMENTS in all forms Children and youth in our care come to us at all stages of academic, social and emotional development. Sometimes even the smallest step forward, like overcoming the fear of interacting with other children, is a monumental achievement; the numbers below represent huge milestones for the kids involved.

In FY 2012 ‌

86% of children at the Knight Children’s Center increased their reading level by one or more grade level

6 of 8 Academic Support for College & Life students matriculated to their second year of college

80% of children and youth at Longview Farm and Southeast Campus passed the English Language Arts MCAS

5 young adults at the Young Adult Resource Network graduated high school or completed their GED

Capital Campaign — Completed! Realizing our vision for a new campus at Longview Farm Important milestones in our capital fundraising efforts for the Third Century Campaign were reached in FY 2012 which allowed the new construction at Longview Farm in Walpole to begin in July 2011. We were blessed with a very mild winter which, together with an aggressive building schedule, meant we were able to meet our goal of moving the children at the Knight Children’s Center in Jamaica Plain into their new facilities in time for the start of the

8

school year in September 2012. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on November 19 with almost 200 benefactors, board members and staff in attendance. A side benefit of all the building upheaval was that the older boys living at Longview Farm got to see firsthand a “live” construction site and participate in several phases as part of their Career Development class. Dry-wall, plastering, conduits, etc. are

no longer foreign words to these boys and a number have expressed interest in the opportunities available in the trades. A comment from one child, on seeing his new room and school — “this place is awesome!” — sums it all up and makes all the hard work worthwhile. Thank you to everyone who helped get us to the finish line!

FY 2012 Highlights We served 3,341 individual children and youth, an increase of 22% over FY 2011 Mental health/family stabilization revenues increased 17% to

$8.7 million Our presence in schools to provide mental health services increased from 40 to 44 schools in Boston We exceeded our target of 28% of total business generated by third-party payers (public and private insurance companies vs. state-funded allocations, primarily from the Department of Children & Families and the Department of Mental Health). At 53% of total business, our community-based programs continued to grow We achieved our goal of 58% capacity in all three residentialspecial education programs, a major accomplishment given the trending away from this level of service toward community-based programs

The 2011 Big Wishes Gift Drive was one of our all-time successes! Almost 4,000 gifts were collected in just one day through WCVB-TV’s “Stuff-a-Truck” at the Boston Common and Legacy Place. Among many local politicians and celebrities helping us collect gifts were Mayor Menino and Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block. Local pastry chefs and media personalities teamed up at our Toy Room for the annual Gingerbread House Decorating Competition; the houses were later on display at various businesses throughout the community. Overall, the Gift Drive resulted in 3,129 wish lists fulfilled, 185 families helped, and $65,000 in gift cards. A special thank you goes out to our corporate sponsors Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and Bernie & Phyl’s, as well as our media sponsors WCVB-TV, MAGIC 106.7 and The Boston Herald, for their amazing support of the drive.

The Home’s annual fundraising gala, Voices & Visions, broke all previous records with an attendance in excess of 1,100 and more than $1 million raised. Through artwork and writing, children in our programs brought the theme of “Celebrating Heroes” to life, creatively depicting heroes that ranged from fictional characters with supernatural powers to famous figures and “everyday” heroes who make the world a better place. The Home acknowledged two of its own many heroes: Robert K. Sheridan, recently retired President and CEO of The Savings Bank Life Insurance Company, for his generosity and belief in our work; and Virginia Griffin, owner of Watson’s Candies in Walpole, for her longtime friendship and dedicated volunteer efforts. 18

Think Differently — Give Differently Many of our generous donors have devised quite creative ways of ensuring that The Home is remembered — both now and in the future. Some examples: ▪▪ Earmarking their Social Security check to come to The Home on a monthly basis ▪▪ Making The Home the beneficiary of their

insurance policy

▪▪ Establishing a charitable gift annuity ▪▪ Bequeathing the balance in their savings account to The Home

Hitting the Links for The Home Our two annual golf tournaments once again made significant contributions to our fundraising efforts in fiscal year 2012. The 17th annual Generous Masters Golf Marathon was held in June at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham. Almost 100 golfers turned out to play 36 holes and raised close to $150,000. It was the ladies’ turn in September with the fourth annual Home in One tournament held at the Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale. Over 70 women got together to either play golf or take golf lessons with one of the club’s teaching pros. The event raised $63,000.
