ANNUAL REPORT 2015

We never give up on children and we never let children give up on themselves.

C

hildren of all ages come to The Home facing some of the toughest challenges they will encounter in their lives. Our philosophy is to strengthen those children and families through a seamless continuum of program and evidence-based services. We continuously measure the impact of our work to better serve those who need our help. The Home prides itself on its unique and innovative programs that give youth the tools they need to succeed in the years to come.

We integrate creativity into the therapeutic process as an aid in healing. Examples of the children’s artwork can be found throughout this report and in our 2016 Calendar of Children’s Art.

A Letter from Our Leadership Dear Friends, This past fiscal year has been one filled with both excitement and nostalgia for The Home for Little Wanderers. Many of our programs went through changes which allowed us to deliver more innovative and effective services. The organization was awarded several new program contracts which expanded our broad continuum of care. Our Board of Directors went through a leadership change. Pam Herbst, a long time board member and Acting Chairperson for almost two years, and four other members, rotated off the board at the end of FY15. We thank all of them for their dedication and support over the years. We expanded the Intensive Foster Care program with the award of two new contracts: Emergency Shelter and Emerging to Adulthood Foster Care. We are especially excited to add the latter to our already robust services for youth who are aging out of state systems of care.

Joan Wallace-Benjamin, Ph.D.

Over the past decade, The Home has been a leader in providing services and increasing awareness around this population. In the spring of FY15, we opened the doors to a new program the Boston-Suffolk County Family Resource Center (FRC). The Home’s FRC is part of a state-wide system that replaced the decades old court-based Children in Need of Services (CHINS) system with community-based, family-focused centers all over the Commonwealth. Our FRC offers families a way to connect with mental health services in their neighborhood and find additional supports like a school liaison, parenting classes, support groups, and connections to after-school activities. There is no doubt this program will make a positive impact on the communities it serves in Suffolk County. Lastly, after 15 years, we said farewell to our administrative offices located on Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay and moved to a beautiful new location in Brighton next to WGBH and New Balance. Our new headquarters is arranged to facilitate team work and is equipped with better technology to help administrative staff better support our employees who are on the ground delivering services to children and families. The growth and ever-expanding quality of this organization’s services to some of the most vulnerable families in Massachusetts would not be possible without the generous support of our friends, donors, Board of Directors, Board of Ambassadors, volunteers and staff. Thank you for your continued belief in our work and our mission. Every child deserves a dream and the support to achieve their goals.

Thank you,

Joan Wallace-Benjamin, Ph.D. President and CEO

“I wanted to do something more for those kids, they deserve more.” — Tim Miner

Philanthropy: A Family Affair Families come in all different forms — blended, biological, adopted and each family has different priorities. Some have to focus on keeping the lights on, most place a high priority on education, and respect. The Miners place a high priority on philanthropy with their three children, leading by example when it comes to giving back and “paying it forward.” Tim and Lauren Miner have been great friends of The Home. Tim joined our Board of Directors in 2011. As the Chief Merchandising Officer at TJX companies, he has established a close partnership between TJX and The Home. Every year TJX sponsors our signature fundraiser Voices & Visions and donates new coats to keep our kids warm, along with many other acts of generosity.

In 2014, The Miner family was honored as

The Home’s Marinella Awardees for their dedication to our mission. Tim and Lauren took in a sibling group of three foster care kids, who were facing the possibility of being split up after their adoption fell through. The Miners were their foster family for close to a year. Their daughter Amanda always wanted to be a lawyer but after being a foster family her interest was piqued in child welfare. So that summer, she interned in the advocacy department of The Home. She worked on the issue of young adults “aging-out” of foster care and the creation of the new Children Requiring Assistance (CRA) law which was passed in

2012. She recalls, “That summer, it was really great to see how law and human services issues can come together with advocacy work.” That year Amanda went back to Cornell as a double major in law and society and inequality studies. So when she came back

for another summer internship at The Home, she was ready to make a difference. She used her education and passion to prepare written testimony for several bills that The Home is supporting this legislative session. Amanda even helped plan The Home’s opening of the Boston-Suffolk County Family Resource Center. Talk about seeing advocacy at work!

R ecently, the Miners have focused energy on improving our Southeast

Campus in Plymouth. Tim had noticed the mattresses the kids slept on could use an upgrade during a recent visit to the residential therapeutic school. As a frequent business traveller, he knows the difference a nice comfortable bed can make. “These kids rarely get anything new or nice. I thought it would make them feel more special,” Tim shared. Lauren named their new endeavor “Project Goodnight” and Tim arranged a donation of brand new mattresses. But they didn’t stop there — new pillows, coordinated sheet sets and comforters;

two patterns for the girls dorm and two patterns for the boys. Then Tim, Lauren and their sons Chris and Brandon (Amanda was busy interning as a program director for SAT prep in low income communities) headed down to Southeast Campus to set the beds up themselves. Together, they made all 27 beds. They zipped on mattress protectors, tucked in the new sheets and comforters. Lauren personally straightened each bed so it looked like a Pottery Barn ad. What a difference it makes to sleep in a beautiful new, warm, comfortable bed at night. Tim had a simple response when asked why they did Project Goodnight — responsibility, “I wanted to do something more for those kids, they deserve more, and the rest of us, who can help, need to.” Because that’s what families do.

“Kids have the opportunity to learn new skills, make new connections, and work with caring adults.” — Keri Lopes

Success at Southeast Campus Almost all the way down Massachusetts Route 3, there’s a quiet tree-covered dirt road that opens up to what looks like a summer camp with its picturesque pond and dock. But it’s not a camp. It is a refuge for kids, The Home for Little Wanderers’ Southeast Campus — a residential therapeutic educational program for struggling kids.

The youth at Southeast Campus (SEC) are

some of the most vulnerable in state care. Most struggle with emotional, behavioral, or learning difficulties, past trauma, or have developmental delays. Caring for these kids and building up their skills takes special people and programs. Under new Program Director Keri Lopes and new Principal Chris Gusman, the program and the kids at SEC are thriving, with a total of 67 staffers supporting 26 kids. Periods of transition, or departure from routine, can trigger adverse behavior in many of the youth at SEC. Lopes and Gusman have worked to ensure consistency both in and out of the classroom. SEC’s on campus school has a small student-to-teacher ratio with 4 – 6 students per class. Program Director Lopes thought it was important to mirror that in the residences. So while the system requires one supervisor to oversee the campus on evenings and weekends, we now have a supervisor for each cabin, engaging the kids and rewarding appropriate behavior with popular, innovative programs.

S ome of the youth at SEC are able to go to school in the community. But many have

never had a caring adult participate in their education. So our leadership team created a supervisor position to watch out for these kids and work with the schools. Knowing they have someone supporting their education and constantly checking with the teachers has had a real impact on the kids’ performance. Where SEC previously offered a small carpentry program,

Chris Gusman, Principal Southeast Campus

Principal Gusman has instituted a Career Development Program, which now also includes culinary/catering, horticulture, and even equine science at Mare Willow Farm. The additional vocational

programs give students a way to succeed outside of the traditional classroom and prepare for adulthood.

SEC’s Career Development Program includes: • Carpentry

• Horticulture

• Culinary Arts

• Equine Science

The kids have been positively

responding to the new expectations and routines. Community meetings are held every Friday where youth can recognize each other’s performance, including Student and Resident of the week. It has only been about a year, since Lopes and Gusman arrived, but they have created a special culture for the kids and staff at SEC. You can feel the comfort and security the staff provides as soon as you step on campus. And local school and DCF offices have confirmed it by increasing referrals.

The Problem: Childhood Trauma in Boston

Almost half of all children ages 0–17 in the Boston area go through adverse childhood experiences.

There is a critical need for our children that has gone unnoticed for decades. Young children are resilient but 90% of brain development occurs during these formative years and trauma and toxic stress can disrupt brain development leading to long-term effects that can damage them physically, emotionally and intellectually for life. These factors include community violence, domestic violence or instability in the home, chronic poverty, homelessness, and many other factors. The recent Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) even found strong correlations between adverse childhood experiences and heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The Solution: Preschool Outreach Program As a leader in Boston’s children’s mental health community, The Home saw a need for clinical intervention in the lives of our youngest population. We developed our Preschool Outreach Program (POP) in response to the widely prevalent trauma and toxic stress small children are experiencing. POP addresses these issues through early childhood mental health consultations and treatment and through the training and coaching of caregivers of young children.

M any consultations will lead to treatment at POP,

where 20 clinicians practice

individual play therapy, family therapy, child-parent psychotherapy, and Sensory-Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART) which helps regulate movement, sensory, and executive functions. Addressing a young child’s mental health needs can prevent serious mental health issues from developing later in life while helping parents become better caregivers.

O

bviously POP cannot treat all the young children in Boston who need it. But that doesn’t stop us from trying. Program Director Paul Creelan has multiplied our effectiveness by training and coaching educators, caregivers and parents to address the issues in their communities. Creelan and his staff host Center for the Social and Emotional Foundation of Early Learning (CSEFEL) model presentations and Classroom Assessment Scoring Systems (CLASS) trainings to support

“It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” — Frederick Douglass

educators and caregivers understanding of children’s learning and development. In FY15, 207 early learning centers consulted POP for help with challenging children or training needs. As of this summer,

Located in Roslindale, POP conducts child and family consultations and treatments that focus on each individual child and their family. Children ages 1 – 7 and families who are referred to POP may have experienced challenging/disruptive behaviors, trauma (homelessness, domestic violence, parental substance abuse), foster care/adoption issues, community violence, among many other toxic stressors. A consultation includes parent and educator interviews, classroom observations, a support plan, and short term case management.

405 educators were coached during consultations, 350 Head Start teachers and administrators were trained, 135 educators received CLASS Course cycles, and 80 homeless shelter staff received CSEFEL trainings.

T

hrough POP, The Home is working to create awareness around early childhood mental health. The coaching and observations POP is doing, along with its training workshops, are producing tangible results, helping our youngest and most vulnerable to face school and life without physical, mental and emotional deficits.
