Restoring the Master Bedroom

Sunsets on the River

Colin Brady, Curator of Collections

Alanna Kibiloski, Development Manager

May 2: Butter May 16: The Michael Clark Band June 6: Jesse Chong

In November of 2012, the Hermitage was once again threatened by the realities of an aging structure. Worn down pipes gave out under the pressures of a new HVAC system causing water damage across three rooms in the eastern portion of the home. For the last five months we have been working with conservators to assess the extent of the damage and determine what steps need to be taken to ensure the integrity of the structure for years to come. The intent of treatment in the Master Bedroom is to preserve as much of the original material as possible. This will likely require integrating repaired and new material with existing undamaged woodwork. Conservators will make it a priority to try and maintain the appearance of the historic oak and its rich color. Once May - August 2013

the project begins it should not take more than ninety days to complete. This will include cataloging all of the panels and boards as they come down, treating them and then returning them to their original positions. While these projects continue to move forward we ask that you support us by visiting the site to witness the work in progress; as well as donate to our conservation fund to ensure that projects like these can continue in and around this museum. The Hermitage survives because of the kindness of our patrons and for that I thank you all.

Conservation work begins on the Master Bedroom

lecture: La Alhambra in Granada, Basilica del Pillar, and la Aljaferia in Zaragoza. I can relate to many of the experiences that Mrs. Sloane described, including her frustrations regarding working with the dry and arid soil of the region. Florence Sloane was not only inspired by the gardens she discovered in Spain, but also by her visits to cathedrals, churches, and basilicas. These influences are reflected in some of the design elements of the dining room and music room in the Hermitage. As the Curator of Gardens, part of my job is to research the history of the gardens to better understand the intentions of Hermitage founder, Florence Sloane. Over the years, this research has become a journey of discovery and learning. I have encountered in Mrs. Sloane’s documents the stories detailing her visits to Europe, thus taking me back to my own travels abroad. A letter from our archives describes a lecture on Spanish gardens that Mrs. Sloane presented to the Lochhaven Garden Club in 1927. While studying garden design in Spain in the 80s, I had the opportunity to visit several of the “dream” gardens mentioned in her

Mrs. Sloane also traveled to the Netherlands, Germany, and France drawing inspiration from the gardens and landscapes she encountered. This May, I will be traveling to Germany, Switzerland, and France and plan to visit many of the same famous gardens that influenced Mrs. Sloane. Florence’s love for the arts is evident in the museum and collection, but it is important to recognize and appreciate her passion for the gardens as well.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and films will begin at 9:00 p.m. Enjoy food from Hubcap Grill, desserts from Twisted Sisters, and refreshments from our cash bar! This year our films will kick off on June 20th with the showing of Old Ironsides, as part of the Battle of Craney Island Bicentennial Celebration. As you watch this 1926 silent film, docents and re-enactors in period attire will mingle with the crowd! Our second film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, is a spirited musical from the 1950s that combines song, dance, and comedy as six brothers search for love. A masterful blend of wartime adventure and unabashed romance, Casablanca will certainly be a crowd-pleaser. The colorful 1940s musical, Meet Me in St. Louis, features Judy Garland at the time of the 1904 World’s Fair. The fanciful Audrey Hepburn classic, Roman Holiday, will be the perfect ending to this year’s film series. Admission is free to all Hermitage members and is $5 for non-members.

Studio Artist Interview: Virginia Van Horn

The Vault

Melissa Ball, Education Programs Manager

Alanna Kibiloski, Development Manager

The Hermitage Studio Artist Program provides six working studios for artists in the Cottage, located at the edge of the Lafayette River on Hermitage grounds. Virginia Van Horn has been with the program from the very beginning, almost six years ago. Virginia is a sculptor and mixed media artist whose work depicts contemporary animal imagery, with the animals often acting as alteregos, self-images, or surrogates for humanity. Virginia, when did you become interested in art? Do you remember your first work of art? I don’t remember my first work of art, although I know that my mother saved some of my art from elementary school - of horses of course. I’ve been interested in art ever since I was little, and I remember one of my mom’s friends giving me painting lessons when I was about seven years old. What projects are you actively working on? I’m currently teaching for Old Dominion University and the Governor’s School for the Arts. I’m also working on a new large sculpture, and I plan to develop a series of larger pieces

over the summer, with the intention of eventually exhibiting them. In five words, how would you describe your art? Wistful, playful, nostalgic, animated, enigmatic, and anthropomorphic. What are your favorite aspects of participating in the Hermitage Studio Artist Program? The beautiful setting, the peaceful atmosphere, and the camaraderie of other artists. What advice would you give to artists just starting their career? Do your best to get your work out in front of the public, whether you think you’re ready or not. Use social media, enter art shows, and network with other members of the art community.

Studio Artists’ Summer Open House Friday, July 12, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Meet Virginia and the other studio artists at our Studio Artists’ Summer Open House. Take the opportunity to visit the studios, enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and purchase unique works of art.

The Hermitage vault, completed in 1937, once housed some of the Sloanes’ finest silver. The room features custom oak cabinets and fireproof walls, which were all originally hidden behind a white oak panel. The panel was replaced by an industrial vault door once the home was opened to the public. This once hidden chamber now houses our gift shop. You can find local artwork, Hermitage merchandise, seeds from the grounds, and other items inspired by the Sloane’s eclectic collection and beloved gardens. Look out for updates on new featured artists and merchandise this summer! A 10% discount on all purchases in The Vault gift shop is just one of the many benefits of a Hermitage membership, so join or renew today!

In summary, the Search Committee has been meeting diligently/weekly with multiple phone calls in between to get to this very important part of the search process. It is the Committee’s hope to have the successful candidate on board at the Hermitage by the first of June. Special thanks goes out to both the Search Committee and to fellow board members and staff who have enthusiastically participated in helping us get to this point. More to come!

It was during the latter part of January to early March that the Search Committee reviewed all resumes and filtered respective candidates down to approximately 10-12. At that point, references were checked, telephone interviews were conducted, and formal interviews were set up.

Upon hearing that Melanie Mathews had accepted a position in Northern Virginia, we quickly moved to form a Search Committee to begin the process of finding Melanie’s successor. Among our first duties was to seek an Interim Director who could help with providing continuing administrative leadership, and we were blessed when John Meek accepted that position with both enthusiasm and without hesitation. The Board is extremely grateful to John in the giving of his time and energy during the search process. The Search Committee then prepared an Executive Director job summary and posted the position in mid-January. We received numerous resumes that included interested parties from local, regional, national, and some international areas.

I want to provide you with an update of where we are in the search for the next Executive Director.

Greetings to the Extended Hermitage Museum & Gardens Family!
