2010 - 2011 Annual Report

The Hermitage is recognized as a ‘Sustained Distinguished Performance River Star’ by the Elizabeth River Project’s River Stars Program. This represents the completion of significant new initiatives by a River Star and was earned for the Museum’s continued efforts in habitat enhancement, pollution prevention, and community outreach and education.

The Hermitage Museum & Gardens has been recognized as a ‘Green Museum’ by Virginia Green, a statewide program that works to reduce the environmental impacts of Virginia’s Tourism Industry. This annual report is being offered in a digital format in an effort to reduce waste and promote environmental awareness.

The Hermitage now participates in the NEA Blue Star Museum program, offering free museum admission to active duty military and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. 109 visitors took advantage of this program during the Summer of 2010.

Our Mission To stimulate the appreciation of art and the environment.

President’s Message “Meet me at the Hermitage!” is being said more frequently than ever. This historic residence of Florence and William Sloane has become a popular destination for Hampton Roads neighbors and friends. Some prefer to contemplate exquisite art in solitude. Others want to listen to music at sunset along the Lafayette River with friends, or create their own art in the studio, or observe greening efforts such as wetlands restoration, oyster reef balls, and rain gardens. Simply “Meet me at the Hermitage” and we can enjoy together a multitude of activities! Each time you visit the Hermitage Museum & Gardens, be sure to introduce yourself to its Executive Director, Melanie Mathewes, members of its excellent professional staff, its Trustees, and its members of the Hermitage Young Associates Board. We are thankful to have such fine leadership. The quality of these leaders has permitted the Hermitage to not only survive – but flourish – during the recent economic downturn. Never before in its history have so many people met at the Hermitage to experience lively and ever-changing events. The Sloane family would be very proud of this accomplishment! Our beautiful century-old residence has required much attention recently. It contains a renowned art collection and is the center of many educational and social activities. A year ago its heating and air conditioning system failed – so – even while struggling to recover from the recent recession, our Trustees had to arrange to upgrade and replace the system (and find a way to pay for it!) without curtailing the programs calendar! Our Trustees decided to meet this challenge directly so the Hermitage recently held its first ever capital campaign to upgrade the heating and air conditioning system. Many of you responded wonderfully to this need! Thank you, each of you, for every gift! At this time the Hermitage has replaced the old system and avoided a crisis - but still needs more funds to recover all costs. If you have not yet contributed please contact our Executive Director or any Trustee – or visit our website. Throughout the past 10 years or so, the Hermitage has faced major challenges such as fire, hurricane, insurance required playground and fence changes, shoreline erosion, roof replacement, heating and air conditioning upgrade, and much more – but – magically, it is a stronger and more vibrant place today than ever before. Why? Because the Hermitage sits in Lochhaven in the middle of a community that enjoys meeting at the Hermitage to celebrate the arts, our environment, and each other! Several Trustees rotate off of the board with me in June, 2012. Please go out of your way to thank Barbara Laws, Liz Melchor, and John Meek for their extraordinary long term service to the Hermitage. Introduce yourself to our new President, Bob Garris, and the other Trustees. The Hermitage will continue its growth for years to come under their guidance! “Meet me at the Hermitage” regularly so that we can join in celebration of this continued appreciation of the arts and our environment! Our best years are yet ahead!

Volunteers

The Hermitage Museum continued to attract new volunteers and docents throughout the last fiscal year. Six new docents joined the training course during this time. The Docent Training Program continues at the Hermitage, which includes new class structure, docent manuals, and educational outlets. In addition to these new guides, the Hermitage saw an increase in volunteers applying to the site. Internships remained at a steady pace of three students per academic semester. Increased awareness of the site from the community has further fueled volunteer applications and time given to the Hermitage. Large volunteer groups worked with the Development and Programs departments for outdoor events such as Sunsets on the River and Friday Night Films. More than 350 individuals have volunteered their time to assist with the beautification of the gardens & grounds including neighbors, students, teachers, sailors, and scouts. Seven new Master Gardeners were recruited to become Garden Docents.

Internships 2010-2011 was a great year for Hermitage interns. Nine interns joined us from universities far and near, including the University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Cincinnati, Old Dominion University, Johns Hopkins University, James Madison University, and Palazzo Spinelli in Florence, Italy. Our interns worked on a variety of projects central to the Curatorial department’s long-range plan. Those projects included: reading, scanning, and cataloging over 4,000 receipts pertaining to museum operations from the years 1939-1946; assisting the Curator of Interpretation with a detailed inventory of collections storage; developing a self-guided tour for Japanese and Chinese speaking guests; writing and illustrating a children’s guide for the Asian collection; assisting with installation of the Summer 2011 permanent collection exhibit; assisting the Curator of Collections with a total inventory of the archives – a project which included processing over 10,000 items.

Tours and Private Events Museum Tours: Rearranging the Galleries This past year marked the physical shift of the Asian collection from the north gallery, to storage, to new locations in the Great Hall, Morning Room, and Little Library. Scholarship on the pieces continued to move forward in preparation of this move. When completed in 2012 the new ‘Asian Gallery’ will house over two-hundred objects that will be supported with an ample amount of literature to assist guests as they walk through the collection.

Work on the galleries will continue... as we prepare for the switch to self guided galleries. Additional work has been done in rearranging the West Gallery, as well as the Morning Room and Master Bedroom. Work on the galleries will continue into 2012 as we prepare for and influx of guests due to large tour groups and the switch to self guided galleries. The curatorial department continues to look for ways to improve the dispersal of information regarding the collection, whether it is through blog posts, new gallery layouts, or awareness programs that are in conjunction with the state or private groups.

Group tours were given to the following: Ballentine Retirement Community • Bermuda Garden Club • Boyscouts • Chesapeake Master Gardeners • Chowan Senior Citizens • Cypress Creek Garden Club • Elders Peak • Ghent Montessori • Girlscouts • Great Neck Point Garden Club • Iron Horse Tours • Kindercare • Lake Prince Retirement Community • Muscarelli Museum • NATO • Norfolk Sister Cities • Old Dominion University • Pembroke Garden Club of Hampton • Phillips Destination Tours • St. Matthews Catholic School • Tanners Creek • Tidewater Community College • Virginia Wesleyan College • The College of William and Mary

Outreach and Education The Hermitage has worked with many individuals and organizations over the past year in an effort to educate and promote cultural enrichment.

Outreach efforts included the following: • Presentations were given by Yolima Carr, Curator of Gardens & Grounds, to over 200 individuals from various civic leagues, gardener’s groups, garden clubs, and environmental societies. • Worked directly with the City of Norfolk, Keep Norfolk Beautiful Youth Group, Elizabeth River Project, VIMS, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Virginia Native Plant Society, garden clubs, and public/private school groups; teaching all subjects relating to living shorelines, wetlands, native plants, wildlife habitat, and gardening. • Participated as an educational exhibitor at the Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show in Virginia Beach. The event drew 15,000 people. • Hosted 40 representatives from the Norfolk Sister Association (Norfolk, UK) in April, 2011. • Continued to offer Through the Garden Gate specialized garden tours. The tours included information on the history of the formal rose garden, plant identification, and an overview of the evolution of the Hermitage gardens and grounds. • Offered Wetlands Enrichment Tours to over 350 students, meeting SOL requirements for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. • Organized and planned programs to offer workshops to the public teaching garden maintenance, rose pruning, and the importance of environmental protection.

Accomplishments & Awards • Restored a quarter acre of wetlands on the west side of the property with the help of the Elizabeth River Project, NOAA, City of Norfolk Wetlands department, Old Dominion University, and the local community. The project involved the installation of coir logs and the planting of over 3,500 plugs of spartina grass. • Installed an irrigation system in the East Garden and Brick Wall Garden using funds donated by the Redwood Junior Garden Club. • Achieved “Model Level” and “Sustained Distinguished Performance” status from the Elizabeth River Stars Program for the fourth consecutive year. The award was given for the Hermitage’s continuing efforts in pesticide control, enhancing and preserving natural habitats, and educating students and the general public.

Collection and Conservation Conservation efforts this past year focused on the home itself, particularly the restoration of the Sloane master bedroom ceiling - completed by plaster conservator Stephen Marder. The second floor of the Museum underwent a transformation as well with the installation of two new permanent galleries: the Florence K. Sloane Painting Gallery and the West Gallery. The Hermitage was also pleased to welcome Chinese art specialist Bruce MacLaren for the first ever Hermitage Appraisal Days.

Conservation Work Plaster conservator Stephen Marder completed restoration work on the master bedroom ceiling. The entire project ended up taking longer than expected due to his discovery of a slow leak in the ceiling above the bedroom which was causing the plaster to continually weep, making any effort to restore the ceiling worthless until the leak was resolved. The source of the leak took a few months to identify and officially stop; once that was finished Stephen quickly finished his work. His conclusions on the project were as follows: the consolidation procedure was a success, stabilizing and securing the area in the center of the ceiling. An area about 18” diameter, center of the ceiling, had de-laminating veneer where the thin white veneer plaster had separated from the base coat. The gap or deflection of the veneer layer was about 1/4”, most of which was corrected with temporary armatures. The overall condition of the original plaster was ‘good’, while repair materials used over the years had deteriorated. The minor losses found in the original plaster were in-filled, while paint losses on the ornament was not repaired or ‘in-painted’, as the excessive paint layers fill ornament detail and may be removed in the future.

Before (top) and after restoration

The average moisture content observed in the room materials is 7%. The future condition of the ceiling depends on monitoring and eliminating moisture as it is found. A large scale project for the future could include careful paint removal, ‘air-dry’ joint compound removal over the entire ceiling and further consolidation. The ceiling should be painted rarely, as the excessive paint layers accelerate damage and clog the detail of the ornament.

Appraisal Days In September 2010 Curatorial Staff welcomed Chinese art specialist Bruce MacLaren for the first ever Hermitage Appraisal Days. The event included a lecture by the visiting specialist, a luncheon, and an afternoon appraisal session where members of the public were invited to bring items from their personal collections for informal assessment. Bruce MacLaren came to Bonhams following ten years as curator of Chinese art at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. During his tenure at the museum, he was the curator or assistant curator of numerous well-received exhibitions including Yin Yu Tang, the relocation and interpretation of a 18th century, sixteen bedroom merchant’s house from Anhui, China to Salem, Massachusetts. In addition to authoring several articles on Chinese art and culture, he has been an invited speaker at symposia and conferences in Hangzhou, China, the Honolulu Art Academy, Northeastern University, Simmons College, and Oxford University. Mr. MacLaren holds a bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut College with a double major in Chinese and Asian Studies, and a master’s degree in Art History from the University of Kansas with a concentration on Chinese painting and calligraphy. Bruce is now the Chinese art specialist for the East Coast and Midwest based in Bonhams’ New York gallery.

Second Floor Galleries Florence K. Sloane Painting Gallery The Hermitage Museum and Gardens is pleased to announce the unveiling of a brand new gallery space on the second floor of the historic house museum. Now open to the public, the gallery features work by a variety of significant 20th century artists. The Florence K. Sloane Painting Gallery arose from a great need – to display Mrs. Sloane’s impressive collection of contemporary masters in optimal conditions with informative labeling. This approach is a first for the Hermitage, and a great leap forward in appealing to the modern museum visitor. Bringing art and culture to the Norfolk area was Mrs. Sloane’s life’s work, and her legacy persists in this gallery. The paintings now on display are undoubtedly some of the finest of their kind in the world, and several are on public view for the first time in history. In amassing her collection, Mrs. Sloane was deliberately instructive; she purposefully filled her museum with a diverse array of paintings so that the people of Norfolk might learn about all styles of art. Her collection stands alone in the region. Artists featured in the new gallery include Peggy Somerville, Helen Turner, George Wharton Edwards, Nicolai Fechin, Abbott Grave, Charles Hawthorne, Douglas Volk, and Stephen Reid. Local, state, and federal granting agencies came together in support of the gallery. The Irene Leache Memorial Foundation, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts were instrumental in the successful transformation of this new space.

West Gallery With the 2010 opening of the Florence K. Sloane Painting Gallery, the Hermitage was able to display an important collection of paintings in optimal conditions for the very first time. On the heels of this significant gallery opening, the Curatorial staff at the Hermitage is planning to expand the concept of the Painting Gallery into an adjoining room, the West Gallery, to further the public’s understanding of Mrs. Sloane as a collector. The West Gallery exhibit is scheduled to open in November of 2011 and will expand on the themes already discussed in the Painting Gallery. The new exhibit will emphasize Mrs. Sloane’s exceptional taste in all areas of fine and decorative art – not just paintings. Anchored by a display of important small bronzes by American sculptor Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, the gallery will also contain open document storage featuring letters, photographs, postcards, and sketches The West Gallery display will highlight the smaller details of the Hermitage story; the small yet unrestrained sculpture of an American master, the preparatory sketches of major American Impressionists, and the handwritten notes Florence Sloane exchanged with them all. The goal of this new gallery is to illustrate Mrs. Sloane not only as a patron but also as a friend. Harriet Frishmuth, Wild Grapes

Highlighted Programs Public Programs and exhibitions offered at the Hermitage attracted over 2,100 people to the Museum this past year. Through Visual Arts Studio classes, workshops and open studios, family programs, children’s Art Camp, an ongoing schedule of exhibitions in the Changing Galleries and the Studio Artists Program, the Hermitage continued to provide Hampton Roads with numerous creative and educational opportunities.

Visual Arts Studio The Visual Arts Studio saw a 19% increase in attendance from the previous year The Hermitage Visual Arts Studio (VAS) offers a relaxing and creative environment with an ongoing schedule of arts classes and workshops. The VAS houses two multi-media classrooms and a ceramics studio with wheels and two kilns. Course sessions run between three and eight weeks, six times per year and are taught by artists active at the Hermitage and in the Tidewater area. Art Camp at the Hermitage introduces children to the world of art and history featuring nine weeks of art projects, special museum tours, and visiting guest art instructors. Boys and girls, ages six through ten, are invited to explore the artwork of the Sloane Collection and emulate those works through art instruction. For the first time in 2011, the VAS introduced four weeks of Young Artists Camp which provided students ages eleven through thirteen with an overall foundation of basic fine-arts training. • Last year, the VAS welcomed 389 adult students and art camps served nearly 150 children, reflecting an overall increase of 85 participants in programs from the previous fiscal year. Program offerings have expanded to include creative writing, fabric arts, and monthly family art days. • The Visual Arts Studio continues to contribute to the community by providing 16 scholarship spots for Summer Art Camp to children from the Park Place Child Life organization - made possible through a generous donation by the Margaret Levin Plovnick Scholarship Fund. “The opportunity the Hermitage gives these low income, at-risk children is priceless and is something they will remember forever. One of our children cried the whole way home because their week of camp was over and they had such a great time.” -Michelle Shultz, Executive Director, Park Place Child Life Center

All Hallows Eve Sunday, October 24, 2010

Event Attendance: 2,810

The fall celebration for all ages, All Hallows Eve, featured performances by the Emerging Artist Ensemble from the Virginia Stage Company and a duet by two Virginia Symphony members. The Education team from the Symphony also brought their fabulous program, the Instrument Petting Zoo. The “Petting Zoo” gives children a hands on experience with a variety of instruments with the help of the Symphony volunteers. And keeping with tradition, Fuzz and Stuffing Puppets, Ryan the Balloon Guy, and Ashley Pickin from Pic-n-Paint Face Painters provided entertainment for the entire afternoon. This annual program would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors and the wonderful volunteers that came to participate in the day. Thank you to Rich Gray for the origami projects and instruction at the Visual Art Studio as well as Theta Chi Fraternity from Old Dominion University.

The Studio Artist Program offers artists the opportunity to apply for one of six working studios available in the Studio Artists Cottage, located adjacent to the Visual Arts Studio on the Hermitage grounds. Six artists are annually juried into the program based on portfolio submissions, professional commitment, and interest in participating in the exchange of artistic ideas. The program invites these artists to experience the Hermitage as the Sloane family intended; inspired by the surrounding natural beauty and the enthusiasm of artistic collaboration.

Enjoying a successful fourth year, six artists joined the Hermitage Studio Artist Program for a 12 month period. Artists Jocelyn Coles, Jasmine Fountain, Amanda Page Stephens, Helen Jones, Patricia Isenhour, and Virginia Van Horn participated in the fourth year of the program. Taking part in local exhibitions as well as lending their creativity to the Hermitage by leading programs and workshops, the Studio Artists demonstrate the caliber of the growing Tidewater artistic community. Representing a wide range of artistic styles and mediums, the artists produce works of painting, photography, ceramics, textiles, and other mixed media.

Gardens and Grounds Education: Educational programs were taught relating to wetlands, living shorelines, native

plants, wildlife habitat, gardens, and gardening. Wetlands Enrichment Tours (WET) continued to offer an interactive program to school groups that met Virginia’s SOL requirements. Participants of the WET program included The William School, Western Branch Intermediate, Waters middle school, Willard School, Christ Academy, and Hermitage Art Camps. Over 350 students participated in the WET program this past year. Through the Garden Gate tours included the history of the formal rose garden, plant identification, and an overview of the gardens.

Workshops: Workshops for the public focused on garden maintenance, rose pruning,

environmental issues, native plants, and heirloom plants. The Enhancing Wetland Gardens workshop taught attendees how to naturally prevent erosion and create a riparian buffer.

Partnerships: City of Norfolk, Elizabeth River Project, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, NOAA, City of Norfolk Wetlands department, Old Dominon University, and Norfolk Garden Club

Sailors’ Dreams: Works by Colombian Painter Cesar Romero August 20 - September 7, 2010

This exhibition featured the art of Colombian oil painter, Cesar Romero, for his first show in the United States. Romero is a contemporary oil painter and engraver whose most powerful influence is nature, thanks to a childhood spent largely outdoors and alive in the natural world. The Sailors’ Dreams exhibit was duly inspired by symbols found in drawings by Colombia’s indigenous cultures, as Romero draws enormous inspiration from the geometric abstractions found in aboriginal art. Showcasing fantastical paintings described by the artist as “a celebration and a festival of color and texture” this exhibition displayed a new series of paintings inspired by the marine life of Hampton Roads. This exhibition incorporated interactive programming including painting workshops taught by the artist, children’s activities lead by staff from the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and an Art Talk lead by Michele Greet, Andean art historian of George Mason University. Spiritual Visions: Crossing Boundaries, Making Connections December 17, 2010 - February 8, 2011 The concept of this exhibition began with the Museum’s permanent collection. Truly a celebration of the arts, the Sloane Collection features significant artwork with religious and spiritual iconography ranging from Asian to Russian to Spanish; and from ancient to 20th century. The Hermitage invited emerging and professional artists to explore the concept of giving a contemporary voice to expressions of spiritual iconography. All are influenced by religion, spirituality, or mysticism in some way. The exhibition demonstrated how spirituality can affect an artist’s work. Featuring the works of fifteen different artists, Spiritual Visions provided the viewer with an intriguing variety of responses to the theme of spirituality. Representing many points of view, the exhibition included abstract sculpture, iconographic painting, mixed media, and provoking photography.

Member benefits include unlimited free admission to the Museum, invitations to exhibition openings, discounts on classes and camps, and free admission to programs like Sunsets on the River and Friday Night Films. The Hermitage finished the year with 957 members.

Sunsets on the River Sunsets on the River has been instrumental in welcoming new audiences to the Hermitage Museum over the past two years. More and more families are able to experience the Museum and Gardens. Keeping the Museum open until 9:00 p.m. on these Thursday evenings has allowed people to visit outside of our regular museum hours. Thank you to the following musicians who participated in the 2010/2011 concert seasons: Lewis and Kayce McGehee, The Diamonds, Ampersand, Jackass Flats, the Michael Clark Band, Jae Sinnett, the Governors School Jazz Band, Mercy Creek, Prana and the School of Rock. During these concerts the Hermitage hosted alumni from Virginia Tech, UVA, and William & Mary.

Friday Night Films The Friday Night Films outdoor movie series allowed members and guests to visit the Hermitage after hours to view classic films with family and friends. Over 600 people attended the inaugural season of this program. Films Shown: Dial M for Murder • Some Like it Hot • Beetle Juice • Harvey • Sabrina

Young Associates Board During the summer of 2010, the Hermitage founded the Young Associate Board - a new board to engage younger generations interested in the Museum. The founding members of this group brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the Museum. In just a few short months, they worked with the Development Department to fund raise and sell tickets for their first event, the Virginia Roast & Toast. Held November 14, 2010, the event sold out. Over 300 attendees enjoyed a gorgeous afternoon at the Hermitage. Proceeds from this event were used to restore the Master Bedroom ceiling in the Museum. Founding Members: Alex Erving, Carrie Coleman, Trish Jones, Paul Jones, John Meek, John Yuill, Ann O’Keefe, Kelly Willette, Cameron Reeves Poynter, Waightstill Avery, Michael Glover, Angie Hill, Kim Phillips, and Melanie Cramer.
