To our friends, family, and in-town/out-of-town guests, please take the opportunity to visit this truly exceptional place. Once you enter the grounds you will immediately see why the Hermitage is enjoyed by thousands each year. Our twelve acres of green space, located on the beautiful Lafayette River, offer stunning views and quiet reflective walks. In addition, there are multiple variations of the arts to enjoy, as well. This to include a 40-room mansion built in the early 1900s, with an impressive collection of artwork throughout the house, to be enjoyed by all who visit. The Hermitage recently turned 75 years old, yet we have so much to offer to all, that we are really just getting started. Take time out of your hectic schedule and enjoy all the wonders that make up the Hermitage Museum and Gardens!

Volunteers

The Hermitage Museum continued to attract new volunteers and docents last year. Six new docents joined the training course during this time. In addition to these new guides, the Hermitage saw an increase in volunteers applying to the site. Internships remained at a steady pace of three students per academic semester. Larger volunteer groups worked with the Curator of Gardens and Development departments in conjunction with interior volunteers for outdoor events like Sunsets on the River concerts and the outdoor movie series, Friday Night Films. Increased awareness of the site from the community has further fueled volunteer applications and time given to the Hermitage.

Interns and Part Time Staff This past year the Hermitage brought on two additional part-time positions, one sustained and one under contract. The latter was that of a registrar, Bridget Mohan, who spent six months working on cataloging the Hermitage collection. Using the software, ReDiscovery, she was able to add over one thousand objects to a permanent database that can be monitored by staff onsite, as well as support staff from the software company itself. This work will provide the museum with an online database that is easy to export and share with a larger community via our website. The second part-time position was that of a volunteer coordinator. Allie Lane has been brought on for a permanent role that falls under our part-time position. She actively pursues new volunteers for all of our departments in addition to all of the clerical tasks that accompany such work. Our interns (from ODU and UVA) worked on a variety of projects central to the Curatorial department’s long-range plan. Those projects included: reading, scanning, and cataloging over 4,000 receipts pertaining to museum operations from the years 1939-1946; assisting the Curator of Collections with a total inventory of the archives – a project which included processing over 10,000 items.

Outreach and Education The Hermitage has worked with many individuals and organizations over the past year and a half in an effort to educate and promote cultural enrichment.

Outreach efforts included the following: • Hosted Elizabeth River Project “Wetlands in the Classrooms” plantings. Four local school groups (E.E. Home School, Victory Elementary, Williams School, and Christopher Academy) participated in the program in March 2012. • Presentations were given by Yolima Carr, Curator of Gardens & Grounds, to over 400 individuals from various civic leagues, gardener’s groups, garden clubs, and environmental societies. • Worked directly with the Elizabeth River Project, VIMS, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Virginia Native Plant Society, garden clubs, and public/private school groups; teaching all subjects relating to living shorelines, wetlands, native plants, wildlife habitat, and gardening. • Offered Wetlands Enrichment Tours to nearly 400 students, meeting SOL requirements for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. • Organized and planned programs to offer workshops to the public teaching garden maintenance, rose pruning, the importance of environmental protection, and the benefits of rain gardens. • Continued to offer Through the Garden Gate specialized garden tours. The tours included information on the history of the formal rose garden, plant identification, and an overview of the evolution of the Hermitage gardens and grounds. • Participated as an educational exhibitor at the 2011 and 2012 Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Shows in Virginia Beach. • Hosted programming for the 2012 Norfolk Home and Garden Tour. The program included tours throughout the day, flower arrangements, and environmental speakers. All funds raised went toward the restoration of historic gardens and landscapes in Virginia. The Hermitage was featured on the cover of the 2012 Historic Garden Week in Virginia guide book (90,000 distributed regionally).

Accomplishments & Awards • Oyster restoration continued in 2012 with the addition of another small oyster reef along the shoreline near the millstone allée. Staff and volunteers from the Hermitage and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation deposited 120 bushels of recycled oyster shells beside the reef balls. • Three “dog scoop” receptacles were installed throughout the Hermitage grounds • In spring 2012, planting and enhancement of the new Rain Garden was completed. • Achieved “Model Level” and “Sustained Distinguished Performance” status from the Elizabeth River Stars Program for the fifth consecutive year. The award was given for the Hermitage’s continuing efforts in pesticide control, enhancing and preserving natural habitats, and educating students and the general public.

Sloane Collection • The painting, Cave of the Storm Nymphs, by Sir Edward Poynter is being loaned to the Yale center for British Art for the first half of 2013. Edwardian Opulence: British Art at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut (USA): (February 28 - June 2, 2013) • The Hermitage was accepted to the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) in 2012. MAP helps small and mid-sized museums strengthen operations, plan for the future and meet national standards through self-study and a site visit from a peer reviewer. • The Hermitage Collections Committee is determining which objects in the collection need to be accessioned and which pieces can be let go through auction, sale, or permanent removal. An unassigned set of pearls owned by Mrs. Sloane was auctioned on June 13, 2012. A portion of the funds are being used for the development of the Asian Gallery (Great Hall). This gallery includes new bonnets for the current vitrines, labels, fabric, and lighting. • Selected pieces in collection were photographed by Rudinec Photos (RequestAPrint). Fine art archival reproductions of these works are available for purchase at www.requestaprint.net. • The option for self-guided tours of the Museum was introduced. Additional labels and a brochure guide map are now available to visitors. Docent led tours are still available to guests.

Sir Edward Poynter, Cave of the Storm Nymphs

• Extensive research was conducted on materials in the archives, which will contribute to the process of determining what is an asset to the collection, as well as laying the foundation for publications.

Appraisals and Conservation • The second Hermitage Appraisal Days event took place in May 1st, 2012. The event consisted of a lecture followed by an informal appraisal session by Karl Green of Bonhams, New York. The lecture focused on the inner workings of the auction world. Prior to his lecture he completed the appraisal of the entire Hermitage furniture collection. Karl Green is an appraiser and auctioneer with nearly 30 years of experience in the European and American auction markets. Specializing in French and Continental Furniture and Decorations, Mr. Green is responsible for Bonhams’ Furniture and Decorative Arts auctions in New York • Susan Abeles of Bonhams, New York completed an appraisal of the jewelry in the Sloane Collection. • Mark Lewis, Stephen Marder (plaster), and Suzanne Collins (faux finish painter) repaired and refinished the plaster in the Great Hall in preparation for Garden Week (February, 2012). • Stephen Marder completed ceiling conservation in the Master Bedroom in the summer of 2011. The funds for this project were raised by the Hermitage Young Associates.

Historic homes are under constant threat from the elements, as well as internal damages caused by the failing of the sites infrastructure. The curatorial staff, in cooperation with the site coordinator, constantly monitors the health of the Museum through documentation of changes both externally and internally. The inclusion of these documents in our annual reports should act as a reminder to all that this museum is a living artifact and should be treated as such. We cannot afford to remain static in these endeavors should we want this museum to survive for future generations.

Master Bedroom Water Leak

On November 1, 2012 a water pipe burst in the ceiling above the Sloanes’ Master Bedroom. Fortunately, no important works of art were lost. However, major damage was caused to the ceiling as well as several walls forcing us to close the east wing for several months as restorations are completed. It has been determined that the cause of the incident was a hidden rubber pipe that was slowly deteriorating over the decades. The rubber pipe has been replaced with copper and restoration of the bedroom walls and ceiling is under way. Repairs for this project will continue into 2013 with a completion date set for March. The bedroom will be converted into a new gallery space.

Hurricane Sandy In late October 2012, Hurricane Sandy brushed past Hampton Roads before making landfall in New Jersey. No major structural damage occurred to the site, however, a significant storm surge of nearly eight feet crept onto the property leaving clear indications that water is creeping slowly towards the main facility during large storms.

Highlighted Programs Visual Arts Studio The Hermitage Visual Arts Studio offers a relaxing and creative environment with an ongoing schedule of visual arts classes and workshops for the local community. Adjacent to the Museum on the Hermitage grounds, the Visual Arts Studio houses two multi-media classrooms and a ceramics studio with wheels and two kilns. Course sessions run three to eight weeks, six times per year and are taught by artists active at the Hermitage and in the Tidewater area.

Art Camps at the Hermitage welcomed 234 children between July 2011 and December 2012 In addition to adult and children’s courses offered throughout the year, Art Camp at the Hermitage introduces children to the world of art and history featuring nine consecutive weeks of art projects, special Museum tours and visiting guest art instructors and programs. Boys and girls, ages 6-10, are invited to explore the artwork of the Sloane collection and emulate those works through art instruction. The Hermitage also offered four weeks of Young Artists Camp for 11-13 year olds which provided students with an overall foundation of basic fine-arts training. The Visual Arts Studio welcomed 380 students and spring and summer art camps served 234 children between July 2011 and December 2012, reflecting an overall increase of participants and an increase in income. Program offerings continued to include painting, drawing, fiber arts, ceramics, and family workshops. The ceramics program has produced increased participation and interest with the addition of specialized classes and workshops. The Visual Arts Studio continues to contribute to the community by providing 16 scholarship spots for Summer Art Camp worth $175 each to underprivileged children from the Park Place Child Life organization made possible through a generous donation by the Margaret Levin Plovnick Scholarship Fund.

All Hallows Eve Sunday, October 30, 2011

Event Attendance: 2,315

The Studio Artist Program offers artists the opportunity to apply for one of six working studios available in the Studio Artists’ Cottage on Hermitage grounds. Six artists are annually juried into the program based on portfolio submissions, professional commitment, and involvement in the local arts community. The program invites these artists to experience the Hermitage as a site for inspiration, collaboration, and for sharing the world of art with others. Enjoying a successful fifth year, six artists joined the Hermitage program for a 12-month period.

Enjoying a successful fifth year, six artists joined the Hermitage Studio Artist Program for a 12 month period. Artists Jim Alexander, Jocelyn Coles, Patricia Isenhour, Helen Jones, Amanda Page Stephens, and Virginia Van Horn participated in the 20112012 program year. Representing a wide range of artistic styles and mediums, the artists worked in painting, photography, ceramics, fiber arts, and other mixed media. By taking part in local exhibitions and offering classes and workshops at the Hermitage’s Visual Arts Studio, the Studio Artists represent the caliber of the growing Tidewater arts community.

Gardens and Grounds Education: Educational programs were taught relating to wetlands, living shorelines, native plants, wildlife habitat, gardens, and gardening. Wetlands Enrichment Tours (WET) continued to offer an interactive program to school groups that met Virginia’s SOL requirements. Participants of the WET program included The Williams School, Willard School, Christ Academy, Norfolk Christian, Girl Scout troops, Tidewater Park Elementary, Linderwood Elementary, St. Patrick Catholic School, and Hermitage Art Camp kids. Nearly 400 students participated in the WET program this past year. Through the Garden Gate tours included the history of the formal rose garden, plant identification, and an overview of the gardens.

Workshops: Workshops for the public focused on garden maintenance, rose pruning,

environmental issues, rain gardens, native plants, and heirloom plants. The Enhancing Wetland Gardens workshop taught attendees how to naturally prevent erosion and create a riparian buffer.

Partnerships: City of Norfolk, Elizabeth River Project, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, NOAA, City of Norfolk Wetlands department, Old Dominon University, and Norfolk Garden Club

The Hermitage welcomed a total of 1,253 visitors to the exhibition openings throughout the year.

Her Mini-Metropolitan: The Evolution of Florence Sloane’s Hermitage, 1868 - Present July 8 - August 30, 2011 This year instead of featuring Mend Our Broken Art (annual conservation exhibit) in the Changing Galleries, the Curatorial Department opted to build an exhibition around the history of the Hermitage. Displayed in the form of an enormous timeline, the exhibit told the story of the Hermitage and its founders from 1868 through 1953. Photographs, newspaper articles, and items of personal correspondence were featured alongside corresponding world events. The exhibit attempted to contextualize the Hermitage for visitors and provide a clearer picture of the Sloane family during a turbulent time in Norfolk’s history. The exhibit featured a number of Mrs. Sloane’s letters to her friends and patrons, including an excellent missive written in 1934 to a visiting Army commander. The letter, an excerpt of which is below, explains her position on the importance of museums, and sheds light on her lifelong devotion to the development of the Hermitage:

Sloane children and friend in Lafayette River, circa 1915

“Museum work is one of expansion. It exists only to give and share with others — its ideals are lofty and far reaching, it aims to help by giving freely of intelligence, time, material, energy and finance. You will find this and only this among all Museum workers — paid or volunteer — a record hard to equal. This is the story and this is why Museums have a growing hold on civic life and will carry on for all time.”

Blossoming: Works by Tory Fair December 15, 2011 - February 14, 2012 This collection by critically acclaimed, Boston based artist, Tory Fair, MFA, featured sculpture, wall reliefs, and prints. Blossoming confronted the viewer with questions about the real and the imagined by incorporating life-sized, fantastical sculptures of human forms haloed by incredibly detailed flowers. The exhibition evoked concepts of nature, space, borders and looking beyond oneself to explore growth and emotions and was a surprising step away from the expected.

Tory Fair, In the Wall II, Resin and sand, 26” x 49” x 21”, 2010

Recent Work Anne Iott May 11 - June 15, 2012 Anne Iott, who received her MFA from the University of Michigan, is a Norfolk resident and former Hermitage Studio Artist. Throughout her extensive career, Anne has received numerous prestigious awards and has participated in 11 solo exhibitions and over 60 group exhibitions. The collection featured in this exhibition explored and highlighted aspects of the environment as both a public and private matter. The exhibition included large scale paintings, small prints, mandalas, and various media. Explanatory text and narratives provided visitors with the fascinating and, in many cases, deeply personal meaning behind Anne’s works of art. Anne Iott’s Studio, 2012

Drawn and Quartered:

Olive Leonhardt, 1939 Revisited November 30, 2012 - February 19, 2013 The Hermitage displayed the works of New Orleans artist Olive Leonhardt in an exhibit that was planned to show in Norfolk in 1939 by Florence Sloane, but never came to fruition. Leonhardt’s paintings and drawings incorporate psychological elements featuring various forms of geometric expressionism that are defined by her intense control of line and use of austere color. Thank you to Gay Leonhardt, exhibit co-curator and granddaughter of Olive Leonhardt, for making this exhibition possible. Olive Leonhardt, Woman with Lilies, Oil on canvas

Fundraising The Hermitage has remained a private non-profit throughout its history, dedicated to the appreciation of the arts and the environment. The Museum depends on the generosity of its contributors to support its mission and remain open to the public. Throughout 2011 and 2012, the Hermitage continued to cultivate and advance relationships that support the organization and the larger local arts community. The Hermitage continues to keep the public informed of the accomplishments of the Museum, increase outreach, and lay groundwork for future growth. Thank you to all of the donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and members for their continual support and commitment to the Hermitage. Their generosity ensures that the Hermitage is able to maintain a level of programming expected from the Museum, continue to keep the grounds open to the public, and remain a resource for the community.

HVAC Campaign The installation of a new HVAC system for the Hermitage Museum was vital to the preservation of the historic structure and the Sloane Collection housed inside. The Hermitage received a $25,000 challenge grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. This grant was contingent on the Museum raising $125,000.

Over 125 individual donors, corporations, and foundations contributed $127,000. Thank you to Christiane and Jim Valone, David and Susan Goode, the Hermitage Museum’s Board of Trustees, the Young Associate’s Board, and all the friends of the Hermitage for helping to reach this goal. Over 125 individual donors, corporations, and foundations contributed to this project and raised over $127,000, exceeding our goal.

Young Associates Board During the summer of 2010, the Hermitage founded the Young Associates Board - a new board to engage younger generations interested in the Museum. The founding members of this group brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the Museum. Every fall, the board puts together a fundraiser event for the Hermitage. The annual Virginia Roast & Toast boasts live music, craft beer, wine, and plenty of oysters. The event brings together hundreds of community members in support of the Hermitage. The money raised supports the everyday expenses of running the Hermitage and ensuring its continued service to the community. On behalf of the Hermitage Museum & Gardens, we would like to thank the Young Associates Board for all of the hard work they put into planning this event every year. Their support is invaluable to the success of the Hermitage. Young Associates Board members: Caroline Ballard, Janelle Burchfield, Carrie Coleman, Sidnia E. Finke, Jodee M. Flint, Eric Gallo, Julia Guerrieri, Michael Glover, Michael Hull, Trisha Jones, Andy Larkin, Megan Mann, Sarah Kiah Morton, Liz Philpott, Cameron Reeves Poynter, Bryant Thomas, John Yuill

Corporate Membership

Corporate sponsorship has always provided critical support for the Hermitage and has allowed the museum to develop new programming and increase outreach. The Hermitage Corporate Membership Program is a new initiative created to offer organizations and businesses new benefits and increased visibility in return for their support and dedication to the Hermitage. 15 corporate members have contributed over $15,000 to the Hermitage since the program began in July 2012:

Cavanaugh Nelson, PLC • Redwood Jr. Garden Club • Sertoma Club of Norfolk • The Hermitage Auxiliary

A tax-deductable contribution allows Corporate Members to enjoy access to the Sloane Collection, changing exhibitions, and the stunning twelve acres of gardens and grounds! Corporate members also receive recognition in marketing materials for programs and events throughout the year. Opportunities include semiannual Heirloom Plant Sales, Virginia Roast & Toast, Sunsets on the River concerts, Spring and Summer Art Camps, Friday Night Films, and Visual Arts Studio programming. Marketing materials for these events can include direct mail, flyers, event programs, email, event signage, and advertisements in publications like The Virginian Pilot and VEER Magazine.
