LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

T

here’s a reason everyone looks so forward to the summers on Cape Cod and can barely contain their excitement when the warm season finally arrives - it is filled with the magic of happy, bright colors, a sense of freedom and an easy, carefree attitude. This entire issue is an homage to all that summer brings on Cape Cod from the breezy styles found in our feature photo shoot to the products we feature in our themed spreads. So, we encourage you to get out and enjoy the Cape and all it has to offer this summer. We just ask that you remember, as you spend time exploring, entertaining visitors and planning nights out at local restaurants, to also visit the local shops that give this place life all year round. And if you need a handy list to tell you where to go, we have a great town-by-town shopping guide at the back of this very issue. Dress Locally,

RUN WAY RUNDOWN Print Tie Dye

Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

This is not the tie-dye made popular by the hippie generation of the 1970s but it definitely evokes the same kind of care-free vibe. The modern update of the print is more painterly and artistic look of the twists, stripes and polka dots that make the print unique. The print has been seen not only on t-shirts, but also maxi-dresses, jumpsuits and even trousers.

Material Crochet

Another trend reminiscent of the 1970s, crochet fabric is definitely having a moment. To be fair, loosely knit sweaters in light colors have been a summer staple for a while, but this season, expect to see this style in midi-dresses and net skirts perfect for layering.

Hemline Mid-Length Shorts

Detail Utility

We know for some people the idea of wearing shorts can be a little intimidating, but this season the trend in shor ts is leaning away from “shor t shor ts and more toward a bicycle style. Biker shorts are both comfortable and offer a little bit more coverage, hitting just above the knee. Depending on the fabric the designs are both sporty and more elevated, as well as more fitted or a little looser for comfort.

The one detail that is showing up on runways all over the world on everything from the expected boiler suits or anoraks to the unexpected long skirt or fitted tee. The extra pockets that represent the trend are designed not to add bulk but to provide a little bit more function.

he Knob, located on Quissett Harbor in Woods Hole is one of the most beautiful spots on Cape Cod and perfectly represents all that is great about getting outside on Cape Cod: sitting on the harbor watching the boats go by, walking the beach, exploring the woodlands and surveying the marshlands. Getting to the end of the Knob’s

walking trail, you are on a spit of land where you feel like you are at the end of the earth. It is hard not to feel a sense of freedom and ease, which is why we chose this special place for our summer photo shoot. The clothing, much like the place, represents the diversity of what Cape Cod boutiques have to offer and provide a sense of ease and freedom.

ERIN SCIMECA / SIGNED MANAGEMENT Erin Scimeca worked for 23 years in New York City scouting for some of the top agencies in the modeling business and bringing some of the big names in modeling to New York. She has traveled all over the world and worked with many of the top agencies in all the main markets in modeling, but this past year her love for Cape Cod lead to the decision to leave the big city and start her own boutique modeling agency, Signed Management. We sat down with Erin to learn more about her experiences in the fashion world, her role as a Mother Agent, what it is like to run a modeling agency here on the Cape.

32

Can you tell us about your background? I am from Holland – a small town in central MA near Sturbridge. My family is from CT so I spent a lot of time between MA and CT. From the time I was 10 years old the only thing I had ever wanted to be was an Interior Designer – my father worked in construction and bought me a Crayola Interior Design Kit and I was hooked. Making floor plans with him and rearranging my room on a constant basis. How did you end up in the fashion industry? What has your experience been? I went to school for Interior Design and as some of our classes overlapped with the fashion students, I ended up being more interested in fashion. My senior year a friend of mine introduced me to a woman that lived in my same small town, who was working on a project for a modeling agency in NYC. She needed some help in her home office, and in the middle of the summer she got promoted to run the whole event and asked me how I would feel about taking over her duties, which involved going across the US to about 110 cities and putting on model searches. I accepted and promised my mother and father after I got back that I would get a “real job.” Twenty-four years later and I am still doing it! That agency was Elite Model Management and the search was Elite Model Look – where Cindy Crawford and Stephanie Seymour got their starts. I had no idea

The Current Quar terly | Summer 2019

the scope of what I was taking on as to me at that time fashion was what you could find in the closest mall to me. Getting my start with one of the top agencies in the world as well as working for one of the icons of the modeling world – John Casablancas – was pretty crazy to a small-town country girl. I watched Gisele and Adriana Lima and countless other supermodels get their starts. I started working for Elite in the mid 90’s and then in 2000 I was approached by the owner of a newer boutique agency to go and work for them. I was ready for a change so decided to take his offer and I became the Director of Scouting at New York Model Management. I traveled the world finding new faces for NYMM as well as working on the development of their new faces. I worked there for 17 years before resigning to start my own agency. My experiences so far have been amazing. There are ups and downs, but I have been able to travel the world – from Russia to Africa to Brazil – I have been to so many places that I never even realized existed. I have been at events and parties with celebrities, and I have gotten to live the rock star life being on tour – tricked out tour bus and all. I was a very shy girl, so this business allowed me to grow so much as a woman and find my voice – I went from shaking and being sick when I had to speak in public to now conducting seminars all over the country to thousands. However, the best experience this business has given me is the fact that I get to change peoples’ lives. I have given other shy girls a chance to shine, as well as provide a future for themselves they may not otherwise have had. I wouldn’t trade the experiences this business has given me for anything.

You recently left New York City to live on the Cape full time, what drove that decision? I spent my summers growing up on Cape Cod from the time I was 5 years old. It has always been my constant happy place. No matter where I had traveled to, the Cape was always my favorite spot to visit. I had always planned to one day retire here. After years of renting, my husband and I bought a summer house here 4 years ago – it was a dream come true. We started spending more time here in the off-season and I fell in love with Cape Cod even more. I loved living in NYC as a young person but as I got older the allure of city life was fading. My stepdaughters were older, and we felt it was the perfect time for us to

make the move while we were still young enough to We do photoshoots with New York photographers, enjoy it! I wanted to get back to my roots and I love the runway lessons, seminars and they even get to meet some community and support that you find here on Cape Cod! agents from New York. Last year was our first camp on Cape Cod and we actually were filmed for a TV show Tell us about Signed Management. When did you start with E! Entertainment and Snapchat called “Camp and what do you do? Runway”. You can still watch either on Snapchat or go I started Signed Management in January of 2018. to E!’s You Tube Channel. This year’s Camp is set for Signed Management is what we consider a Mother mid-June. Agency. My job is to find talent, develop and train that talent and then put them in the hands of people that will You have signed some local talent. How did you book them jobs. Some would consider it like a manager, “discover” them and what would you tell other but I don’t like to call it that, as it is so much more! Cape Codders who want to dip their toes in the Mother agents are there to protect their models as well modeling waters? and make sure the team of people working on them are doing the jobs they should be – hence the term “Mother.” I felt that with the influx of models in the industry, it is an important time for models to have someone on their side only working for them and doing it the right way. I also really love finding that awkward girl that doesn’t realize how beautiful she is and helping her discover she is a beautiful swan. I want to make a difference for these girls and show them that there are good people in this SHELBY JILLIAN industry that want to help them succeed. There are so many stereotypes and I want to show that most of them are just false! I have 40 girls on my board. Sixteen girls are placed from LA to NY to London to all over Asia with a total of 35 contracts for those girls. Pretty exciting for just a little over a year! We also do a Model Camp where I invite a group of the girls I have signed to come to my house for a long EMMA LEX weekend and teach them all about the modeling world. 34 The Current Quar terly | Summer 2019

I have signed four girls from the Cape and three others from elsewhere that I found on Cape Cod. I found Emma last February at a craft/vintage show, and she is now living in NYC full time and working with an agency there. She has shot a beauty campaign and is appearing in an episode of Law and Order: SVU. Jillian is still young, and in our development, she was referred to me by a friend. Lex, I found awhile back when she was only 13 at a festival in Yarmouth. Shelby was also referred to me by the photographer that took her senior portraits. Anyone interested in modeling or wanting to know more information can go to our website signedmgmt. com and we have guidelines under the Submit Photos sections on how to send me your photos. You can also email me at erin@signedmgmt.com You never know when you may have the look or maybe you have a friend or daughter that you feel would be a good model. How would you describe Cape Cod style? When most people think of style on Cape Cod, they think preppy - pastels, loafers, chinos - but I feel that there is more than that. I see a hipster vibe going on, which most likely was popular here before it was in the big cities. The Cape does have a large young population, and they do care about trends and making a statement. I am happy to see some cool boutiques that have opened like Fisherman’s Daughter (in Chatham) and One 21 (in Mashpee) that seem to cater to this younger, trendy vibe. I also love the Bohemian style that I feel you can find on the Cape too. Who doesn’t love wearing a long flowy dress?! www.thecurrentquar terly.com | @thecurrentquar terly
