A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT This year marked two very important milestones for The Clay Studio. 2014 marked our 40th Anniversary as an organization and the 20th Anniversary of our award-winning Claymobile™ Outreach program. These milestones are only possible when generations of people share their passion for creativity – and they turn that passion into action! With such a deep history and an ever-widening audience to serve, we celebrated the year by presenting high quality youth education, scholarly lectures, special guest veteran artists, clay wheel battles, a Mud Ball dance event, signature parties, and, of course, excellent art! We look forward to expanding our reach and celebrating 40 more years with friends, artists, students, collectors, supporters, and everyone who wishes to have a creative experience! Thank you to the dedicated staff, passionate board, talented artists, and committed supporters! - Christopher R. Taylor President

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR This year, I attended the collectors’ tour during the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Conference in Milwaukee. At every turn, in every conversation, and at every event, I was reminded exactly how important The Clay Studio is to the field of ceramics. In November, many of us traveled to New York to attend the American Craft Council (ACC) ceremony of the Award of Distinction, which was presented to The Clay Studio for 40 years of service to the field. Once again, I was reminded of the respect and prestige that The Clay Studio holds in a larger craft community. It is an honor to serve as the Chair of the Board and to work with such a dedicated collection of staff, board, artists, teachers, and supporters. - James G. Fulton Board Chair

2014 marked The Clay Studio’s 40th anniversary, and to celebrate, we hosted a 40-hour marathon of events on May 9th and 10th. The weekend celebration featured a variety of free activities and events that encouraged friends, neighbors and the general public to experience all The Clay Studio has to offer. The celebration kicked off with a live Raku pottery firing on our premises. That same morning, coffee drinkers in Center City Philadelphia were unwitting participants in the Guerrilla Mug Assault, in which paper coffee cups were traded for handmade mugs. Later in the day, guest participated in a happy hour silk screening workshop and the evening was capped off with a Claymation viewing party. During the overnight hours we hosted war veterans and ceramicists Ehren Tool and Jesse Albrecht through the exhibition Occupation, where onlookers interacted with Tool and Albrecht as they transformed 1,000 pounds of clay into hundreds of military-themed crocks and cups in The Clay Studio’s public gallery space and storefront window. Guests were invited to personalize the crocks with glaze or create their own cups with stamps and glaze. We were proud to have this project included in the PBS documentary Craft in America. Saturday was kicked off with Sunrise Yoga along with a coffee hour and studio tours. The afternoon was filled with events for the entire family including wheel battles, clay instrument making and jam session, and an ice cream social and bowl decorating.

The marathon of events was capped off with Fired Up at Forty: A Celebration, a fundraiser and cocktail party in support of The Clay Studio’s education programs. This event was held at American Street Show Rooms and welcomed over 200 guests as part of the celebration. Alumni and members of The Clay Studio Board were honored at this event. The Hero’s award was presented to Linda Levin Silverberg on behalf of her father, arts lover and philanthropist Harry Caplen. In 1989, Mr. Caplen believed in The Clay Studio’s mission enough to allow the Studio to move into our current property in Old City and maintain an incredibly low rent, enabling us to grow and flourish as an arts organization and ultimately give back to the community through our programming. The Clay Studio has named the award the Harry Caplen Hero Award for future recipients who have shown excellence toward The Clay Studio and its mission.

2013-2014 Exhibition Schedule The Clay Studio’s Gallery and Exhibitions Program are essential to our artistic vision. We seek to support and promote both talented emerging artists and mid-to-late career professionals, while fostering innovation in the ceramic arts and honoring clay’s traditional roots.

Resident Artist Program

The Resident Artist Program invites talented ceramic artists to immerse themselves in creative growth and professional development. The program affords 12 artists the necessary time, resources, and mentorship at the often-pivotal time between academia and the life of a working artist. The Clay Studio provides each artist with subsidized studio space, opportunities to show their work in The Clay Studio’s shop and gallery, teaching opportunities, and an expansive network of artists and art appreciators. Once juried in through a highly selective process, residents are invited to remain in the program for up to five years.

The Bertram Horowitz Society The Bertram Horowitz Society is a group of The Clay Studio’s most dedicated and visionary donors. Their commitment and passion for the ceramic arts and art education enables The Clay Studio to fulfill its mission of making the ceramic arts accessible, while providing the highest level of artistic and educational programming in service to the region and arts community globally. Named in honor of a true champion of The Clay Studio, Bertram Horowitz was a Philadelphia lawyer, insurance professional, and civic activist whose dedication and support allowed The Clay Studio to continue to thrive after a devastating fire in 1980 nearly ruined the organization. Members of the Horowitz Society, just like Bertram Horowitz, represent the spirit of service, dedication, and growth.

As we celebrate important milestones, new visibility, prestigious awards, and our service to the community, we are also facing a significant challenge. In January of 2019, The Clay Studio will be without a home. Many of us are working on identifying a new space and thinking about the expense of such an endeavor. We need each person who reads this message to dig deep and commit to keeping The Clay Studio functioning for years to come. Achieving 40 years took vision, tenacity, and passionate service from hundreds of people just like you. We hope that you will make a personal commitment today to help ensure a bright future for The Clay Studio.
