Faces of Clay represents the many people who we see every day: whether it’s students learning in our school, artists creating new work, visitors observing in the gallery, families in the community, or youth in Philadelphia’s schools, we serve a diverse group who each have their own special relationship with The Clay Studio
Coming off of the excitement around our 40th Anniversary year, we have refocused our efforts on enhancing all of our artistic, educational, and community program areas. For the first time ever, we have scheduled programs nearly two years out into the future. This programming plan is supported by an annual marketing plan, annual budget, and comprehensive annual development plan. Planning may not sound attractive, but we have seen great results. Thanks to this incredible staff effort, we have expanded our partnerships in the community, we have secured several multi-year grants, and the internal operations are becoming increasingly more streamlined. We remain highly dedicated to our artists – and they are achieving great things. We were excited to announce the seventh Pew Fellowship winner from our alumni, Lauren Mabry. We are also proud of our twelfth and thirteenth Independence Foundation Fellows, Roberta Massuch and Rebecca Chappel. We can celebrate our first ever Sybille Zeldin Fellowship awarded to Joanna Pike. Recent alumni have gone on to teach at Alfred University (Chase Folsom) and the University of Washington (Jinsoo Song). Others have moved on for major commissions (Julie Moon) and opening new studios in Philadelphia (Rebecca Chappel and Lauren Mabry) and around the country (Peter Morgan). Our incoming class of 6 artists joins an extremely talented group of 6 existing residents. We look forward to seeing many great things from these artists! The gallery presented everything from love to war. ErotiClay highlighted some playful sculptural and functional work around Valentine’s Day, and Postwar Perspective presented the work of two war veterans,
Jesse Albrecht and Jessica Putnam-Phillips. We hosted a special presentation with the Mosaic Arts International Masters and partnered with Design Philadelphia to present Bobby Silverman and Pottery by Design. We celebrated masters like the late Victor Spinski and young artists in the 11th Annual Marge Brown Kalodner Graduate Exhibition. Visiting artists came from Belgium, Sweden, Germany and the US. The Clay Studio was also represented at the International Academy of Ceramics conference in Dublin, Ireland. We are equally committed to the educational needs of our community. The Wallace Foundation and the American Alliance of Museums have held us up as a national example of successful audience building through published research, webinars, and conference panels. Our school, workshop, clay camps, and Claymobile programs are reaching more people than ever before. We are the proud recipient of multi-year grants from the Barra Foundation and PNC Arts Alive to continue audience engagement through social workshops and community outreach. Our Associate program remains a vibrant community in itself, presenting its own holiday exhibition late in the year. We’ve welcomed a new group of Work Exchange members, who will spend the next two years working and creating during an independent artistic study. The Clay Studio is making an impact in the studio, in the classroom, and in the community. Thank you to our talented staff, dedicated board, and generous supporters! Christopher R. Taylor President

In the fall of 2014, The Clay Studio was honored by the American Craft Council with the Award of Distinction for its service to the field of craft. President Christopher Taylor noted that the award was not only in recognition of the organization, but for everyone in The Clay Studio’s history who helped make it what it is today.

EDUCATION The Clay Studio School sees over 4,000 students pass through its doors each year, serving adults and youth through classes and workshops for every level of learner, as well as advanced workshops for the practicing artist, and summer clay camps for youth beginning at age six. Approximately one-third of our students are advanced level artists and nearly all of our instructors hold MFAs. The Clay Studio’s model of social educational programming was highlighted in the Wallace Foundation’s 2014 publication, The Road to Results: Effective Practices for Building Arts Audiences. This study held TCS up as a national model for innovation in audience research, attraction, and retention. The Wallace Foundation’s publication, Opening New Doors: Hands-on Participation Brings a New Audience to The Clay Studio was released in the summer of 2015.

Date Nights and Clay Clinics A relaxed, intro-to-wheel-throwing workshop for couples and friends, Date Nights are our most popular workshop at The Clay Studio, often sold out weeks in advance! Saturday Clay Clinics serve as the daytime equivalent. Both workshops provide a creative learning environment for anyone who seeks to learn, laugh, and create.
Classes The Clay Studio offers 5, 7, 8, and 10-week classes for all levels of learners that focus on such things as hand building, wheelthrowing, sculpture, and surface decoration.

Workshops Our workshops are unique opportunities for students to learn directly from practicing artists. Artists teach specific techniques and revealing an insight into their own studio practice.

Claymobile Outreach Program The Claymobile is a direct-service mobile arts outreach program that provides hands-on subsidized ceramic art education to nearly 2,000 underserved Philadelphia youth each year. Since 1994, each day the Claymobile sends teaching artists to schools, community centers, and social service agencies in two vans equipped with all of the tools, clay, and glazes needed for a Claymobile lesson. By bringing ceramic art education directly to students who need it the most, we are furthering our mission while also integrating art and culture into the lives of a new generation.

Clay Camps The Clay Studio offers summer Clay Camps in July and August for campers ages 6 and up to learn hand building, wheel throwing, glazing, and clay animation. Clay Camps are a fun, fundamental practice for every early learner.
Community Outreach Through partnerships with local businesses and festivals throughout the city, The Clay Studio brings artists directly to the community through free, public outreach. These events take place throughout the year and include artist demonstrations, handbuilding and clay animation lessons, and interactive throwing contests. This year, The Clay Studio received a $25,000 grant from the PNC Foundation through PNC Arts Alive, which supports community outreach activities through the summer and early fall of 2015 and 2016.

Work Exchange The Work Exchange program provides young artists with an intensely focused, self-directed technical educational study for a period of up to two years. In exchange for access to a shared studio space, affordable materials, firings, and professional feedback, each participant provides 40 hours per month of support in the Studio school, gallery, and Claymobile program.

Internships The Internship program provides opportunities for individuals of all ages who are interested in learning about the processes of arts organizations. From programmatic support and customer service to administration and fundraising assistance, interns spend one to two terms experiencing the breadth of a dynamic arts organization.

ARTISTIC PROGRAMS The artistic programs at The Clay Studio exemplify artistic excellence in the field of ceramics. Through a rotating Gallery and Exhibitions program that showcases the work of national and international ceramic artists, The Clay Studio supports and promotes new trends in clay while honoring its cultural traditions. The Resident Artist program, exceptional for its length and depth, encourages emerging talent through the transition from graduate school to the life of a working artist, supporting the creation of a new, complete body of work. Through all of our artistic programs, we strive to deliver inspiring experiences and serve as a resource for artists.

New Curator of Artistic Programs In January The Clay Studio welcomed Jennifer Zwilling as the new Curator of Artistic Programs. Jennifer brings with her a wealth of knowledge on contemporary craft and experience as both a curator and professor in higher education. In her role, Jennifer oversees the Gallery and Exhibitions, as well as the Resident and Guest Artist-in-Residence programs. Welcome, Jennifer!

Residents The Resident Artist Program offers 12 of the top emerging ceramic talent in the U.S. and abroad the space, time, and resources to create a new, complete body of work. This competitive program allows artists to stay for up to five years and supports them in the pivotal time of transition from graduate programs to the life of working artists. Resident Artists are invited to participate in several group shows throughout the year and one solo show during their residency. Associates The Associate Artist program is a continuing education program that serves individuals seeking the time, space, and resources to deepen their ceramic art practice. Through rental fees, The Clay Studio provides shared workspace and offers discounts on resources such as clay, tools, glazes, and kiln firing. The communal culture allows for exchange of ideas, artistic critique, and valuable feedback from other Clay Studio artists and instructors.

Guest Artistsin-Residence Each year, The Clay Studio hosts several Guest Artists-in-Residence from the U.S. and around the world. Guest Artists are given free housing, a stipend, and use of studio facilities. Mudball 2014
Pot Luxe 2014 In the fall of 2014, six local chefs partnered with The Clay Studio to prepare exquisite meals in the homes of six of The Clay Studio’s top donors and collectors. Flowing with food, wine, fine art, and conversation, Pot Luxe invites food and art enthusiasts alike to experience excellent dining and exceptional collections of art. The event served as a fundraiser to support The Clay Studio’s artistic and educational programming.

Mudball The Clay Studio’s second Mudball Dancea-thon took place in October 2014 at World Café Live. The fundraiser drew crowds of costumed attendees prepared to dance the night away for art education. Through sponsorships, team crowd-sourcing, and individual giving, Mudball brought in funds that went directly to support all of The Clay Studio’s education programs, including the Claymobile Outreach Program, classes and workshops for all levels of learners, and Clay Camps for younger learners.

The Clay Studio Celebrates In honor of a dear friend and longtime supporter of artists, The Clay Studio hosted The Clay Studio Celebrates Stanley Shapiro in the spring of 2015. For 21 years, Stanley Shapiro supported Clay Studio Resident Artists through yearlong fellowships that provided a financial stipend, allowing each artist the time and space to delve deeply into his and her practice without financial burden. The Clay Studio Celebrates brought together friends, family, and supporters of Stanley, The Clay Studio, and the ceramic arts. The event supported The Clay Studio’s general operations.

The Clay Studio Benefit Auction This year’s Benefit Auction occurred entirely online for the first time in Clay Studio history. Artists and collectors donated over 70 pieces. The proceeds of the Benefit Auction supported The Clay Studio’s general operations.
