WELCOME

year! I am beyond grateful and humbled to share that we have had the most successful year in the school’s fundraising history. Our parents, alum ni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends gave so generously. Together we raised $15,957,701 for Barstow during the 2021–2022 school year. We’re touched to receive gifts of all sizes, from a meaningful $5 donation from a 2022 alumni to our larg est-ever gift. Every gift, no matter the size, ensures that our tradition of excellence in academics, arts and athletics continues and supports Barstow’s mission to “provide sound scholarship and to give symmetri cal development to mind, body, and character.”

On behalf of everyone who benefits from your generosity, thank you for your thoughtful gift and for investing in The Barstow School. I look forward to the year ahead and know we will continue building great things together.

Dear Barstow Community, The spirit of innovation upon which The Barstow School was founded in 1884 is still thriving on our campus — and beyond — as we begin our 138th year. I believe it will be our finest year yet. The 2021–2022 school year brought record enroll ment, record fundraising, the opening of the Dan and Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC, and the creation of new global programs in Ghana and Türkiye. As we begin the 2022–2023 school year, you will experience a campus that is in an exciting building phase. With generous donations from our community, led by a $7.5 million gift from an anonymous donor, we are currently undertaking projects that will enhance and further develop opportunities for our stu dents. You’ll see the beginnings of those projects in the Impact Report, and you’ll see them progress in the months and years to come. The pioneering mindset of our founders, Mary Louise Barstow and Ada Brann, is clearly evident in our continuing accomplishments and I know they would be proud of their school today.

history, The Barstow School has begun a series of construc tion projects that reimagines campus for the future. An anonymous donor generously gave $7.5 million to improve and add facilities that will align with the school’s innovative academics, extracurricular programs and record enrollment.

One of the first projects to be completed is the addition of artificial turf on Barstow’s varsity soccer field. The $1 mil lion turf field can be used year-round in all types of weather and will be able to withstand intense and increased playing time — a major benefit for Barstow’s championship boys and girls varsity soccer programs.

“We are very grateful for this transformational gift,” President Shane Foster said. “With higher enrollment than ever before, it allows us to keep pace with the rising demand for a Barstow education and add programs and spaces that serve the diverse talents and interests of each student we serve.”

The two-story building will include three golf sim ulator hitting bays and a practice putting green, a dance studio, team meeting room, team locker rooms, specta tor restrooms, concession stand and community event space. The physical education locker rooms in the main building will undergo a $500,000 renovation and the first two phases of a $1.5 million roof installation for the main campus building will be completed in 2023. Multistudio (formerly Gould Evans) provided architectural and design services, and OnSite Construction Group is the gener al contractor. The projects have been reviewed and ap proved by the Barstow Board of Trustees under the lead ership of Vice President and Head of Campus Operations Liz Bartow. 6

$7.5 million

The Barstow School is proud to announce a record gift that will spark exponential impact for our students today and for generations to come.

In addition to the projects on the State Line campus, the anonymous donor also designated $1 million for the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC, Barstow’s state-of-the-art STEAM learning center that opened in Leawood, Kansas, in July.“Gifts such as these are only possible because of the trust, respect and admiration people have for the lengthy body of work that Barstow’s leadership and advancement team have produced,” Trustee and Chairman of Board Advancement Committee Michael Kulp said.

pus, and we’ve grown exponentially since 1962,” Bartow said. “As we consider our next sixty years and beyond, we are grateful that we can modernize our building and add spaces that will be enjoyed by all students, athletes and members of the school community.”

AN

Thank you for

WHAT INCREDIBLE year of generosity and dedication to Barstow’s mission “to promote sound scholarship and provide symmetrical development to mind, body and character.” Our community proved once again that we are stronger together — overcoming challenges posed by another year impacted by COVID-19 and contributing to the unprecedented success of The Barstow Fund. Now, we are building together, improving campus and strengthening our curriculum for future generations. We could not do this without our alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and community partners who understand the value of a Barstow education and the important role each of us has in providing the region’s best and most innovative independent school education for every Barstow student. your continued support.

IN A YEAR OF DYNAMIC GROWTH across the Barstow campus — in admissions, philanthropic support and construction — perhaps the biggest development occurred across State Line Road in Leawood, Kansas. On June 21, 2022, the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC opened its doors to supporters of Kansas City’s highly anticipated center for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) learning. A few weeks later, the first group of excited students began hands-on courses focused on innovation, discovery, entrepreneurship and arts.

Doors Open to STEAM Learning at Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC

Professional-in-Residence Leo Johns watches a student use a soldering iron during a dronebuilding workshop in July.

Barstow President Shane Foster and Vice President of Advancement Jennifer Dreiling led the successful capital campaign and raised $9 million to repurpose a vacant grocery store at 12200 State Line Road. The board of trustees and more than 40 corporate, foun dation and individual donors supported the presi dent’s vision for a regional STEAM center. Pluribus Architectural Collective and JE Dunn joined the proj ect, and after months of successful fundraising (even during a pandemic), planning and designing, con struction began September 1, 2021.

“We believe that capturing and inspiring the imag ination of young people has the potential to create game-changing, life-changing and perhaps even world-changing outcomes,” Dan Towriss told the au dience that evening. He and his wife, Cassidy Rudman Towriss ’12, are multi-million dollar Leadership Donors to the center that bears their name. They recognize that STEAM skills are essential for the next generation workforce.Designed to serve thousands of students from di verse neighborhoods and socioeconomic backgrounds, IDEA Space seeks to broaden and diversify pipelines into four key workforce development areas: skilled trades, engineering, advanced manufacturing and computer science. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 will have consistent and ongoing experi ences in the center’s Makerspace, Technology Lab, Fabrication Workshop and Incubation Hub. Each area is purposefully designed and equipped with cutting-edge tools and technology: 3D printers, laser cutters, hand held and power tools, woodworking saws and lathe, CNC router and CNC mill, VR headsets and controllers, robotics kits, gaming systems and so much more — plus a growing inventory of everything students need to turn their ideas into something useful and real.

Capturing and inspiring the imagination of young people has the potential to create game-changing, life-changing and perhaps even worldchanging outcomes.”

— Dan Towriss, Leadership Donor

14

For IDEA Space Director Kellye Crockett, reimagin ing the space as a cutting-edge community resource was the ultimate STEAM project. “Yes, this is a build ing,” she told donors who had gathered for the first look in June. “But you’ve invested in something much more for the children of Kansas City. You’ve invested in the power of their ideas.” Barstow students will spend part of their school day at IDEA Space for STEAM-based classes and activities and may also participate in extracurriculars like robot ics or esports. Partnering with school districts, home school associations and community groups, thousands of other metro students will access IDEA Space for summer or after school courses and co-curricular work. They’ll have ongoing access to the tools and technology they need to increase their comfort and confidence in STEAM fields. Children will learn to communicate, col laborate and become makers, doers and leaders.

TOWRISSCASSIDY&DAN IDEA SPACE Trustees Greg Graves, Jennifer Gille Bacon, Cassidy Rudman Towriss ’12, Rob Rothhaas, Soni Patel, Amanda Morgan ’94 and Chairman Joel Brous ’88 helped open IDEA Space on June 21, 2022. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to give back to a place that gave me so much.”

— Cassidy Rudman Towriss ’12, Leadership Donor 15

“Through IDEA Space, students all over the Kansas City metro area will be part of an interactive learning program in a first-class environment, and I look for ward to the lessons they’ll get to take with them into their futures,” Cassidy Rudman Towriss ’12 said. “I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to give back to a place that gave me so much.”

Joseph LeBlanc Remembered as Barstow’s “Renaissance Man” JOSEPH LEBLANC, whose roles at Barstow included teacher, administrator, coach, business manager and cherished colleague, passed away on April 28, 2022, in Prairie Village, Kansas.

Mr. LeBlanc remained at Barstow until his mid-80s, taking on positions that included student council sponsor, honor council sponsor, math department chair, basketball scorer and announcer, and baseball coach and field-keeper. That field was ultimately named in his “Joehonor.was a great leader at our school. He instilled confidence, wise direction, and support for teachers and students. He inspired us to do our best,” said longtime colleague Walter Brayman. Former faculty member Mac Gratwick remembered Mr. LeBlanc as “the epitome of the Renaissance man — knowledgeable and skilled in a remarkably broad number of fields. His broad range of knowledge was due to being a lifelong learner.”

Mr. LeBlanc came to Barstow as an upper school math teacher in 1969. The following year, he began serving as assistant to the headmaster, head of middle and lower school and sponsor of the rocket club. He quickly earned such respect and affection among students that they dedicated the 1973 Weathercock to him.

Donors who leave a legacy for the school through a bequest in a will, trust or other deferred gift.

“Inside class, he reaches us with patience and fairness. Outside class, he reminds us of what is best about Barstow in his firm and quiet love of her ideals. Sometimes he will surprise us with a hat-and-cane dance, with a poem he has written, with a moment from his New Hampshire childhood. We dedicate this book to a physicist, a mathematician, a craftsman, a lover of rockets and children and stars.”

Joe LeBlanc is survived by his wife of 66 years, Katherine, children Elizabeth (Rob) Gray, Bill (Charyl) LeBlanc and Jim LeBlanc; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“To attract talented employees and enroll families who want the best education for their children, you need worldclass facilities and resources,” Greg Graves said. “There is no better time to invest in education and our community.”

In addition to the Graves Family Foundation, Marc Kulick ’06 gave $50,000 and the McCandless Family Foundation gave $15,000 to add an enclosed area for technology equipment.

A major portion of the foundation gift will be used to make improvements to the baseball field. The current field is frequently impacted by weather and needs infield turf, upgraded dugouts, backstop and netting, fencing and a scoreboard. The Graves Foundation des ignated $750,000 as the project’s lead supporter. More Barstow baseball enthusiasts and supporters, including the Hart family, have now expressed interest in supporting the project to ensure it will be enjoyed for years to come. JE Dunn Construction will make a $10,000 donation to the project.

The Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC also received $100,000, designating the Graves Family Foundation as Empowerment Donors to the innovative STEAM learning center in Leawood, Kansas.

“Everyone needs to get away from the classroom or the office once in a while, and this space is so comfortable and functional. We’re really happy to have it.”

A PLACE TO CONNECT & BUILD COMMUNITY

The donation provided $250,000 to create a contemporary faculty lounge and resource center in a space formerly used as a meeting room and a portion of the COVE. Guided by employee input, it includes a modern kitchenette, fireplace, big screen television, comfortable group seating and private workstations.“Ithinkthe new lounge will strengthen our sense of com munity and help us do our best work by sharing time and ideas with each other,” Director of Theatre Bob Kohler said.

IT’S A PHILANTHROPIC TRIPLE PLAY: a $1.1 mil lion gift from the Graves Family Foundation that will help renovate the Knights’ baseball field, create a state-of-theart space for faculty and staff and open the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC. Philanthropy is a way of life for Deanna and Greg Graves, and three generations of their family are involved with The Barstow School. Greg, former chairman and CEO of Burns and McDonnell and author of “Create Amazing: Turning Your Employees into Owners for Explosive Growth,” serves on the Barstow Board of Trustees. Five of their grand children are lower and middle school students at Barstow. Their daughter Jessica Chanos is the school’s Director of Social and Emotional Counseling Services and was named one of Ingram’s 40 Under Forty in 2022.

Graves Family Gift Supports Teachers, Staff, Students & Athletes

"We’ve seen Barstow’s outstanding faculty firsthand and how its unbelievable programs allow students to discover and develop their talents,” Deanna Graves said. “We hope our gift strengthens those experiences and expresses our gratitude to the people who make them possible.”

Construction began in June to create a state-of-the-art faculty and staff resource center and lounge. It will be completed, furnished and ready for use this fall.
