A Brief History of The Barstow School

the beginning

n 1884, the first home of the “School for Girls” was located at 1204 Broadway, and Miss Ada Brann and Miss Mary Louise Barstow were Associate Principals. Within a few years there were two more location changes within Quality Hill, and a name change to “Kansas City Home and Day School.” In 1898, the school relocated to 15 Westport Road. The four-story building on a large acreage was bound by Westport Road, Main Street and 40th Street, capable of housing 150 students. After 25 successful years, Miss Barstow retired to Maine, and The Barstow School incorporated as a not-for-profit organization with governance through a Board of Trustees. The School’s Golden Jubilee arrived in 1934, although hardly jubilant. The Trustees carried the School through its toughest economic challenge. In 1937, a fundraising campaign was initiated for $100,000. In 1938, onethird of the students received some form of scholarship. i n n o v at i o n

By 1947, enrollment reached 180, the mortgages were paid off, and faculty salaries were raised. In 1950, Richard Sears—the first male head of school— was hired and brought with him grand ideas about Barstow’s capabilities and its future place in Kansas City. Mr. Sears and the trustees debated several key issues to Barstow’s future. Expanded facilities at 5110 Cherry were considered, but the question of co-education had to be settled before expansion could be embraced. By April 1958, the Board decided that “long range planning should probably be aimed at securing a suitable campus for the achievement of whole school and co-education.”

115 t h a n d s tat e l i n e In a nutshell, Barstow needed to raise $2.1 million to move to the new school in the country cornfield—and once again, Barstow reinvented itself. In 1961, Barstow’s enrollment was 313 and only 3 of those students lived south of 103rd Street—today the overwhelming majority of more than 600 students live “out south.” The Trustees of the late 1950s correctly predicted the future growth of the city, and Barstow has since been the beneficiary of such foresight.

Barstow is already well into its second century, and more positioning is being done to keep Barstow in the forefront of high-quality private education in Kansas City. Toward that end, Barstow is now adapting its curriculum, structure and size with the same careful thoughtfulness applied by the School’s leaders in its first century. It is time to join in the history of embracing Barstow’s spirit and mission as we get ready to celebrate the School’s 128th birthday.

A Letter From the Head of School et me be the first to say “thank you” to all who participated in our fundraising efforts for the 2010–2011 school year. I am personally grateful for your willingness to give of your time and talents to The Barstow School. The quote you see here is intriguing to me, as I hope it is to you, also. This very simple phrase embodies the spirit of giving throughout Barstow’s 128-year history. There are many examples where a faculty member, an administrator, or a board member put the interest of Barstow before his or her own interests. An act of kindness or generosity has, at times, saved the school from certain demise, as well as propelled it into a glorious future.

In this Donor Report, we recognize the people who have given of themselves to ensure a bright destiny for Barstow. Each gift is important right now; each gift is also important to someone in the school’s future whose acquaintance you will never make. Price Hall arstow has indeed been fortunate to receive a very generous gift from Douglas M. Price ’76 and the Price Family Foundation. On April 5, 2011 the Price Hall was dedicated to the memory of Esther Swirk Brown, a beloved family member and community activist. The Price gift was instrumental in building our state-of-the-art Lower School wing and the much-used gathering area that is now Price Hall. Esther Swirk Brown’s work toward ending racial inequality in Johnson County, which eventually led to the landmark court decision, Brown v. Board of Education in 1949. We are honored to be a part of Esther’s legacy, and we are grateful to the Price family for sharing her story with us. Our curriculum will also reflect the courageous life of Mrs. Brown, as we incorporate her life and work into English, ethics, history, and leadership courses.

Opening Night! ith paparazzi, the red carpet and the cameras clicking, it was truly a glitzy evening for the guests at Opening Night at Barstow Gala and Auction on May 7, 2011. The affair to remember boasted Hollywood glam, as co-chairmen Carol Anderson and Nikki Sims and more than 100 volunteers created “tinsel town” on the campus. Funds raised through the auctions and dinner support the mission of the school, symmetrical development of mind, body and character. Guests enjoyed the festivities as they bid on fabulous auction items and celebrated the tradition of fundraising at Barstow.
