2| New markets and new services define the future for TETRA communications #

The announcement of the first TETRA trial in North America, together with the news that work on the next generation of the TETRA Standard has started, were the headlines at the TETRA Association's Congress press conference yesterday. The North America trial is due to begin next month, just under a year after the TETRA Association formed its Interest Group to facilitate the availability of TETRA in North America. The first trial will be in Canada, with TETRA infrastructure equipment supplied by Spain’s Teltronic, and terminals by Teltronic and the UK’s Sepura. The next evolution of the TETRA Standard is currently being specified by the ETSI TETRA

Technical Committee (TC TETRA) based on requirements gathered from users around the world. This evolution is designed to provide broadband services such as mobile video for users who demand mission-critical delivery. The full user requirement specifications will be available by the end of this year. The TETRA Release 2 standard has been completed and the wideband spectrum decisions for TETRA Enhanced Data Service (TEDS) made in Europe. Repeating the TETRA success story for broadband will require additional effort from all stakeholders, as the need must be justified to the radio administration community. The TETRA Association is driving

Selectric success

The German state of Baden Württemberg has awarded a contract to Selectric for the supply of 18,000 Sepura radios for police use. The first users will be on the network in September. Baden Württemberg is the third largest federal state in Germany.

and coordinating this activity. The critical communications market showed steady growth despite the difficult economic conditions, with the transportation market proving to be the one to watch in terms of future potential.* Independent research from IMS is forecasting growth of more than 20 per cent in the terminals market over the next five years. Phil Godfrey, chairman of the TETRA Association, said: “The resilience of our market in a time of unprecedented and global economic uncertainty proves the undiminished need for critical

A range of solutions on show from Sepura Tailored solutions for the German BOS-net are on show on Sepura’s stand G401. A little over two years ago Sepura established Sepura Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary based in Garching near Munich, to offer direct support to customers and in-country partner Selectric. All Sepura radios support the BOS-specified E2E encryption se-

curity system. A new BOS smart card holder has been developed for use with Sepura’s mobile and gateway products. A new Handset Based Console (HBC), combining the functionality of the traditional radio console and telephone handset, allows flexible vehicle installations. Safety assistance for users is now available through Sepura’s automatic Man-down reporting option. This multi-dimensional motion sensing technology automatically reacts to changes in the orientation of a radio caused by non typical movement behaviour of its user, resulting in the transmission of local and remote emergency alerts. Sepura’s STP8000 handportable combines PMR and cellular features, and operates in physically challenging conditions. Rugged and du-

rable, the range of features includes a robust rugged accessory connector that connects underneath protective clothing, via a remote speaker microphone. The STP8100 hand-portable is a variant of the STP8000, and includes the Man-down reporting option.

Sepura’s product portfolio also includes its SRG3500 vehicle radios with gateway functionality, acting as a relay point for both hand-held and other vehicle radios, extending the trunked network into areas of limited coverage.

By Jeppe Jepsen, Director International Business Relations, Motorola In April 2009, the first interoperability certificates between two independent TETRA manufacturers were issued and it seems that, at last, the opportunity of Inter-System Interface (ISI) can be realised. ISI, the ability for disparate TETRA systems to be interconnected to meet specific requirements such as cross-border communications, is one of the few promises of TETRA that has yet to be truly delivered. There have been many reasons behind ISI’s failure to materialise; complexity, lack of a common technology baseline and competition in the industry, have all played a part. The TETRA ISI represents a set of basic services necessary to support cross-border communications between independently owned and operated TETRA networks, each with completely independent number structure and security environments. Govern-

Hands on or hands free On Stand A312, Eptheca Global is showing its brand new mobile dispatcher unit designed for EADS, Motorola or Sepura radios. Hands free radio operation is achieved using the built-in microphone and footswitch.

The new unit from Eptheca Global

The loudspeaker can be switched on or off allowing the user to communicate in private or public mode, making the unit also suitable for training purposes.

Interconnecting TETRA systems ment users who needed ISI wanted to see and feel the product in advance but there was no justification for the large R&D investment necessary to provide even a basic set of services between the complex and markedly different infrastructures provided by different manufacturers. However, in response to customer needs, Motorola and one other key TETRA supplier have returned to ISI implementation

activities based on plans for a next phase Three-Country Pilot (3CP) field trials between the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Commitment is required from enough customers to warrant the investment from industry; infrastructure and terminal suppliers alike and Motorola, having gone through the ISI certification process using initial functionality developments, recognises this is a technical mile-

stone rather than an indication for operational readiness. Motorola has developed a White Paper, “Interconnecting TETRA Systems”, that explores the key issues relating to ISI, when it will be realised and how the market will evolve. The White Paper can be downloaded from www.motorola.com/ emea/dealerconnect/tetra/TETRA _ISI_Whitepape(1).pdf.

Space age TETRA from EADS Faster fault resolution for car giant EADS has announced the completion of the new TETRA-based communications network, selected by ROSKOSMOS, the Federal Space Agency of Russia, to refurbish the trunking network at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Construction and implementation was undertaken by LEO Telecom. The system provides 100 per cent of radio communication coverage for the Cosmodrome, for the neighbouring air fields and for the town of Baikonur, serving over 1,000 subscribers by mobile radio communication. "The Baikonur Cosmodrome is currently migrating from the analogue to the TETRA system and will soon have the benefit of an AVL system covering the entire territory of the site. This has the double benefit of facilitating additional services for the client and being of great value to the personnel," said Dirk Borchardt,

CEO of Security & Communication Solutions. Founded in 1955, the worldfamous Baikonur Cosmodrome is at the leading edge of space exploration. It has seen such milestones as the first artificial satellite in space and the first man in space. Covering an area of 6,717 km² near the Kazakh town of Tyuratam, it currently has over ten launch pads. From pre-project assessment, to system design and frequency planning, to supply, installation and commissioning, this was a turnkey project that also included personnel training. EADS: Stand G301
