World Congress News The 8th TETRA World Congress

Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Growth in all sectors as TETRA reaches further around the world during 2005 October 2005 lists over 788 significant TETRA infrastructure and terminal contracts awarded in 77 countries – a contract growth of 27% compared to the last survey in 2004. Just as the survey was completed, announcements were made 7% in Hungary and in the UK Commercial & Industry 3% of nationwide contracts – Confidential 5% for the Hungarian Public Government 6% Safety services and for the English Fire and Rescue Military 6% Services respectively. Oil & Gas 2% Phil Godfrey, the TETRA PAMR 3% Association’s Chairman commented, “This is the PSS 45% third year in a row we have been able to report

The annual contract survey by the TETRA Association shows that TETRA has been deployed in over 40% of the world’s nations. The most recent contract review completed in Transportation 23%

double figure growth in TETRA contracts. Not only has TETRA become the de facto standard for Public Safety users, it is also achieving significant growth in other market sectors such as Transportation and Commercial markets.” This success story for TETRA is echoed from around the world.

Placing the last piece of the puzzle? At yesterday’s TETRA Association Press Briefing, Hans Borgonjen, TETRA Association Board member and one of the founder members of the combined group of European Public Safety communications officers who have been helping to turn the Schengen vision into a reality, commented that, “Germany is very close to a momentous Public Safety communications decision. Their choice of a new communications technology will be a significant step to completing the harmonisation we are all hoping for.” Germany’s central role for PSS communications in Europe Mr Borgonjen demonstrated evidence of the strong support of

the political parties of the CDU and SPD coalition to the new national communications network with

reference to a quote directly from the coalition agreement showing the commitment to push forward the plans for building Germany’s new public safety network. “In order to improve PSS communications capabilities we will

push the introduction of a digital network (,Einführung des Digitalfunks‘) in coordination with the federal states and within the framework of the selected operator model. It must be our goal to provide nationwide coverage, a universal standard and a fair cost-splitting between Federal Government and the federal states“. Hans concluded that the picture puzzle has most of its pieces already set out across Europe forming a strong and coherent map of TETRA users. He added, “Just one or two gaps remain. The pieces have been identified and the best way to achieve the solution is clear – TETRA. It just remains to put them into place.”

In this issue: An array of antennas; Gala Awards ceremony tonight and how to get there; new contracts; new products; an innovative covert solution and a clue to yesterday’s language competition.

The top two user segments by contract volume are still Public Safety and Transportation who, between them, represent over two-thirds of the global market. However, growth in absolute terms for the Transportation market has now overtaken the Public Safety market. TETRA now deployed in 77 countries around the world Growth for TETRA has been strong in all regions around the world. With a large installed base, numerical growth continues to be most in the regions where national networks have been installed and users enjoy the benefit of multi-vendor choice and interoperability. This is focussed in Europe. However the fastest growing regions in percentage terms during the survey period were Africa and the Middle East, demonstrating TETRA’s momentum as a standard and its penetration into new markets outside of Europe.

APD upgrades Swedish police Mobile information specialist APD has signed a contract with partner Steria AB to provide The Swedish National Police Board (“Rikspolisstyrelsen” or “RPS”) with an upgrade to its existing communication system. The new APD ‘CORTEX’ system is designed to complement the RPS’s integrated telephone, mobile and police radio networks. It will build on the success of APD’s roll out of an earlier version of its CORTEX system to all 21 RPS control rooms in 2000, and will enable the support of TETRA radio systems. The new CORTEX system is set to go live in Autumn 2006. Superintendent Mats Dahl said, “I am happy with the new system. It was important for us to find a solution that could be easily integrated due to the time restrictions involved in bringing the control room system software in line with the TETRA infrastructure. APD had the best capability.” Check out the data on Stand G3.

Frogne TETRA in Fyns Taxa Fyns Taxa, eight independent taxi companies and control centres, spread over the island Fyn and parts of South of Jutland in Denmark, have chosen to replace their PMR network with a TETRA solution from Frogne. The TETRA network covers an area of approx. 5.300 square kilometres using six sites. The network uses Rohill’s TetraNode solution, with its future-proof IP-centric softswitch architecture. Each vehicle is equipped with Frogne’s on-board system including a TFT touch-screen terminal with integrated navigation, a mobile printer and

an on-board computer with GPS. For communication be-

yond radio coverage the vehicles have a GSM GPRS module. Besides AVL for the automatic dispatching of the jobs, the system also enables on-line credit card transactions, database queries and the collecting of operating data. To see more, visit Frogne’s stand P1 and Rohill’s stand C1.

Phonak strikes with Cobra Phonak Communications’ Wireless PTT Cobra Set is the latest in covert communications. This remote control solution is fully compatible with the latest generation of TETRA handheld terminals. You can put Phonak under surveillance on Stand G7.

To meet the demands of today’s market, which include encryption, dedicated emergency button, data communications, full duplex private communications, full redundancy, status and text messaging, fleet management and more, Zenitel has now invested in a new digital infrastructure called ChuChubi Trunking. ChuChubi is a Caribbean bird – stories tell of the ChuChubi carrying news from one place to another in the Caribbean. As the system provides the pipeline for fast, reliable and secure communications, this inspired the choice of ChuChubi as the name for the new network, which has just celebrated connecting its 2000 th subscriber. You can see Zenitel if you hop down to Stand E4.

Motorola wins TETRA train deals The Danish State Railways (DSB) S-train has awarded Motorola and TetraNet the contract to provide a new TETRA communications network for the DSB’s service personnel, including train inspectors and drivers. This award means that all public transportation organisations in Copenhagen now rely on TETRA technology. The contract covers a voice and data network and the provision of Motorola MTH800 portable radios, plus equipment for DSB S-train’s command and control centres, airtime service and maintenance.

The network will be delivered before the end of 2005 – its rapid rollout is part of DSB Strain’s IT strategy to improve efficiency. Continuing the railway theme, the China Electronic Technology Corp. No. 54 Research Institute has selected Motorola to provide a TETRA digital trunked radio system for the Beijing Urban Rail Transportation’s Beijing Metro Line 5, which will form part of the city’s ongoing plans to develop and expand its public transportation system. Multi frequency mobile antennas AntenneTechnik ABB has developed antennas that solve the problem caused by the growing use of leased cars and commercial vehicles by public authorities. Leasing companies do not want to inherit a vehicle that has been drilled with anything up to four 10/12 mm diameter holes. AntenneTechnik ABB antenna designs allow for an antenna to provide combinations of all, or some of the following frequencies on one structure: AM/FM – GSM 900/1800 – GPS – TETRA – VHF – UHF – DAB Radio. The company has been making multi frequency antennas for many years, mainly for the German auto and broadcast industries, and as result of a management buyout has expanded its operation to cover the whole of Europe and industrialised countries. Connect up with the sales team on Stand A7.
