EADS first with high speed data transmission EADS Secure Networks has transmitted high-speed data over its TETRA network – the first company in the world to do so. EADS has developed its high speed data capability based on the TETRA enhanced data service (TEDS). It can be introduced by a software upgrade. The product concept proves that a two-way video transmission, for example, will be possible using a single TEDS carrier of 50-kHz channel bandwidth. EADS will support both 25-kHz and 50-kHz channel bandwidths. EADS’ TEDS radio works in existing EADS TETRA network infrastructure – no hard-

ware has been upgraded in the TB3 base station. “In 2004, we introduced the world’s first TEDSready TETRA base station. We promised to develop highspeed capability for existing EADS networks as a software upgrade.

We are delivering on that promise now,” said Jean-Marc Nasr, Head of EADS Secure Networks. 1 First from EADS. Find out more on Stand I

Europe takes second place as TETRA goes global Figures released today by the TETRA Association show that the technology is now present in 94 countries – 56 of which are outside Europe. It’s a solid success story for the standard so long regarded as ‘European’. The Asia Pacific and Middle East regions show the fastest growth, with contract numbers increasing by 57 per cent and 43 per cent respectively since September 2006. With the spread of the technology comes the di-

versity, and while public safety remains the largest market, growth is most marked in the Commerce & Industry and Oil & Gas sectors, both of which have increased by almost 50 per cent. Phil Godfrey, chairman of the TETRA Association, said: “TETRA’s consolidated success in Europe has provided a firm foundation for the technology to make its mark around the world. With knowledge shared and expertise exchanged, the market is gener-

ating its own momentum. From just over 200 contracts in 2002, today we are reporting over 1400*. “Whilst we now expect to see TETRA technology safely in charge of national public safety, the private networks are proving increasingly popular as industry and utilities realise the benefits of secure, interoperable and proven systems.” Recognising the importance the Asian market, the TETRA Associa-

tion’s Technical Forum met for the first time outside Europe this year, in Shenzhen, and in September will hold simultaneous meetings in Europe and China linked via video conference. Next year’s TETRA World Congress will be in Hong Kong. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, this is the first time the TETRA World Congress will be held outside Europe. *Figures compiled from information provided by TETRA Association members

Interior Ministry No interference from Phonak selects SELEX SELEX Communications has been awarded a contract to supply Italy’s Interior Ministry with a national TETRA network for the Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police), the Carabinieri (Military Police), the Guardia di Finanza (Customs Police), the Polizia Penitenziaria (Penitentiary Police) and for the Corpo Forestale Italiano (Italian Forest Brigades). The first phase of the public safety network became operational in December 2005. During emergency situations, the network will work with other networks, such as the Emilia Romagna Region R3 Network, a regional TETRA network that provides voice and data services to Emilia Romagna’s Municipal and Provincial Police Forces, Civil Protection and Emergency Medical Services.

On Stand K2, Phonak is launching profilo, which they say is the first interference free covert solution entirely immune to electromagnetic interference caused by power lines, car ignition systems, anti-theft devices, scanners and many other electronic devices and electrical installations. Not only is interference highly annoying, it can also hinder communication and may therefore lead to dangerous or even life threatening situations. Contrary to conventional inductor covert systems, profilo is the first product of its kind containing a transductor with EMI shield. This new technology is a Phonak invention that shows a

strong commitment to serve all professionals who rely on their covert communications.

The wireless transmitter takes the form of a ‘low-profile’ key fob which is small enough to be attached to a key ring or temporarily fixed to a mobile phone or PDA. More rugged applications are addressed by a purpose built ‘low profile’ housing that can be mounted to motorcycle handlebars or to the stock of a firearm. Each remote device has an effective range of 3 – 4 metres coupled with uncomplicated user configurable ‘pairing’ which enables limitless, simultaneous ‘close-proximity’ users. Denmark moves closer to decision

EADS granted first ISI certification

The establishment of nationwide TETRA network in Denmark has taken a step forward with the decision by the Danish government move to final negotiations with Dansk Beredskapskommunikation A/S. The contact is expected to be signed during the summer. “The decision to award the contract to Dansk Beredskapskommunikation is based on the fact of them having provided the most cost effective solution. The scope of the contract which will be signed is access to a nationwide radio communication network. “The decision about terminals and control room software will

The world’s first TETRA InterSystem Interface (ISI) interoperability certificate has been granted to the EADS TETRA system. The interoperability (IOP) certificate for TETRA ISI covers mobility management of radios, inter-network individual calls and inter-network short messages (SDS). The testing was performed between two EADS TETRA systems on Release 5 level. The main benefit for the user is the ability to migrate from one network to another and still be able to make and receive calls and data messages with other users on both the home and the visited networks. TETRA interoperability certification is an industry process managed by the TETRA Association. Certificates are issued by an in-

He added: “The evaluation process indicates two very strong and competitive bids. However, one of the bids is offering more than the official requirements.” Within a year from now, the Danish public safety organisations will move from hundreds of independent private radio networks to one shared SINE (security) network.

Sepura Repeater software extends range for direct-mode users Sepura has released a software upgrade that enables its repeaterready TETRA hand-held radios to be used as TETRA direct mode operation (DMO) repeaters, giving users additional voice and data communications flexibility. When operations fall outside the coverage of a TETRA network, users revert to DMO to maintain communications. If a team is then forced to spread out beyond DMO range – for example, if operating inside buildings – group communications can be compromised. A DMO repeater-ready TETRA radio can nearly double the working range of the group thus ensuring that DMO communications are maintained. The repeater software upgrade can be uploaded using the Sepura

Radio Manager. Once activated via a radio licence key, users simply enable ‘Repeater Mode’ from the radio’s keypad. The Sepura Repeater software is designed specifically for Type 1A repeater operation, which translates into: the most efficient use of radio spectrum. It can be configured to allow the user to listen to and participate in ongoing group calls simply by pressing the ‘Push-toTalk’ feature. While doing so, full repeater functionality is maintained. Additional functionality includes the transmission of repeater presence signalling, customisation of

transmitter power during repeater operation, Short Data Service (SDS) emergency calls through

Multi site and high capacity DAMM’s TetraFlex single site solution for local and rural TETRA coverage is now available for multi site operation. IP technology connects the site controller, base stations, dispatchers, network management facili-

ties and external gateways in one infrastructure. This IP capability and the DAMM maintenance facilities enables network monitoring and subscriber management from any IP connection. If the requirement is for more

than a single site system, TetraFlex can easily be expanded with scalable software to a multi site system. TetraFlex is supplied with a graphical management system used for configuration and surveillance of the entire Tetra Flex network. Network Management clients provides graphical locations for each site, using Google maps. All sites are remotely controlled from this function. Meet DAMM at stand K1 in the exhibition hall.

Applications and solutions On Stand L4, Zenitel is introducing a number of applications and solutions for mission-critical environments. The company will showcase an integrated solution for remote management and monitoring of Confined Area communication systems and related peripheral equipment (SCADA type applications). This approach will facilitate the introduction of operator initiated break-in audio using VoIP techniques, as well as providing flexibility, scalability, improved operation and service. Zenitel is also demonstrating a full interconnection concept between a variety of intercom stations such as IP, vandal proof wall mounted, desktop dual display and TETRA subscribers.

MAC responds In response to the RF measurement needs that are specific to TETRA networks being deployed in metro and subway rail networks, MAC Ltd has developed a waypoint input and an in-building location capture capability within the CatchAll signal strength measurement receiver to enhance the product for on-train or in-compartment use. Andorra demonstrates the value of measurement Dominion Tecnologías completed the first phase of Andorra operator STA’s TETRA network at the end of last year, and expansion is now under way. It will include an upgrade of the system by implementing Rohill’s new Advanced TCA (Telecom Computing Architecture) platform. The main cities of the country, the main roads and rescue areas are covered, including the tunnel of Envalira, the main road to France. Operational sites were subjected to a measurement campaign set up in co-operation with Samdale, who to date have assisted more than 30% of the United Kingdom's police forces with their services. “It is possible to receive very poor TETRA service in a location with very good TETRA coverage. It is for this reason that we distinguish between Coverage Validation, which tests the TETRA RF coverage and Service Verification, which tests the actual service

delivered to the user”, explains Andrew Fleet of Samdale. Up to 12 TETRA parameters were considered for fine-tuning

the main areas. STA can migrate to the AdvancedTCA platform, maximising their investment by extending the lifetime of the hardware. Talk technology with Rohill on Stand M1.

TETRA’s evolution revolves around data, integration and applications The best things in life mature over time. So it is with well-honed technology – and TETRA has evolved smoothly into the de facto standard for mission critical networking. Patrick Connolly, senior research analyst at IMS Research, says successful roll-outs – such as the Airwave system, a secure digital radio network dedicated for use by the UK’s emergency and public safety services – pushed TETRA as the genuine standard. ‘The success of the European networks really helped to make TETRA a global success,’ he says. ‘It is highly secure and particularly suited for usage in densely populated areas.’

Paul Long, marketing director for Airwave, says a number of core features, such as clear voice communications, mobile data access and network resilience, means the emergency network has evolved to give users unequalled system features. But customer demands also change and Long says there could be a requirement to integrate mobile technologies with back office processes in the future. ‘We could well take the decision to complement TETRA with mobile access via 3G and WiFi. Our main focal points remain network

TETRA – moving in the right direction

evolution – the shape of the network to come, if you like – and the applications that sit on it.’

Iain Ivory, TETRA solutions marketing manager for Motorola, says Release 2 – and the TETRA Enhanced Data Service (TEDS) component – will allow TETRA to continue to meet the needs of key organisations, such as utility firms, through expanded data rates. 'People want more data bandwidth and that's where the network will go during the next few years, both in the public safety and commercial sphere. Motorola’s guide to the ‘Evolution of Critical Communications’ is available at: www. motorola.com/tetraworldcongress

Different flavours – or one of a basket of bearers? TETRA has come a long way – but has it yet been able to come far enough, asks Duncan Swan of Mason Communications. The news from Norway that Nodnett has within its contract a requirement to deliver TETRA Enhanced Data Services is encouraging. Manufacturers of TETRA equipments must at last seriously consider whether they will join the ‘data-race’ and offer either network infrastructure and/or terminals capable of supporting TEDS; but there remains the question that if they do, then what will the ‘TEDS flavour’ be that they support? At the same time operators of TETRA networks, many of who are independent of their infrastructure supplier have some difficult deci-
