Wrest Point MG Historic Motor Race The MG car Club of Tasmania held its inaugural Historic Race meeting at Baskerville Raceway on September 18 - 20 2009. The meeting was a celebration of the clubs 50th anniversary and also incorporated the Early Holden Reunion 2009. The 22+ pre EH Holdens on show at the reunion created a great spectacle and as this track has a long history of full fields of FX and FJ Holdens in the past, many memories were relived by a large crowd of historic car enthusiasts. The feedback from competitors, spectators and officials was overwhelmingly positive and those who were visiting Baskerville for the first time were ecstatic to see a track well suited to historic race cars and reminiscent of race circuits from a bygone era. The track itself is the oldest continuously operated race circuit in Australia and the challenging 2.01km of track produced close racing for all historic categories competing. From the elevated vantage points spectators watched the meeting from the comfort of their own cars, having a full view of the meeting’s on and off track activities. Displays over the weekend included 270 cars competing in the ‘Shannons Show and Shine’ with a large selection of these cars participating in a lunchtime track display. Also included were various pit displays of period race cars. Social activities outside the track were located at the Wrest Point Casino and by all accounts this venue was a good base for the mainland competitors and visitors. The organisers are negotiating a date for around September/October 2010 on the historic calendar and if this inaugural meeting is anything to go by, it will be a must for many competitors.
