President’s Welcome 2018 Historic Sandown

W

elcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2018, “27 Years of Thunder”. This is the 27th year of this event promoted by the VHRR, and is its great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown.

Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall, and his very experienced team in Race Control. Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the venue for our event.

This year sees an entry of some 320 plus cars represented in all historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits, and in The “Red Hill’ spectator area at the Dandenong Road Corner of the circuit. A free shuttle bus will operate between the main gate and Red Hill at regular intervals.

Thank you also to our very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, MUSTANG MOTORSPORT, and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at all the trade stands and support the sponsors who support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events.

On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.

Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Chairman of the Sandown Race Committee, Noel Robson, his race committee, and the MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organize this great event.

This year we see the return of a large grid of the fabulous F5000’s. They will have there own race and should provide some exciting racing.

Enjoy your weekend

There will also be a large grid of the ever popular Group C & A Touring cars and 2 large grids of Grp N Touring cars, another crowd favourite, as well as a large entry of Grp S cars. I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend.

Ian Tate VHRR President

I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing. I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car

The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible. The VHRR would like to thank V8RACE for their supply of course vehicles.

SANDOWN vs BROOKLANDS

S

andown had existed as a horse racing facility for many years before it was selected as the venue for Australia’s first motor races. Harry James and several other members of the Automobile Club of Victoria (Now RACV) were requested to organise activities for the Commercial Travellers Association’s 1904 annual picnic to demonstrate the suitability of motor cars as transport for commercial travellers. Three events were conducted on March 12th on marked sections of the horse track and witnessed by around 1400 spectators, most of them had arrived on special trains to the Sandown station. Twenty two months later motor racing started at Brooklands (UK) Mr H.F.Locke King sponsored the establishment of the facility that was claimed to be the world’s first permanent motor race circuit and conducted it’s first races in July 1907. During construction of the concrete 2.75 mile long 100 feet wide track with 30 feet high banked corners neighbours were complaining. Thoughout the following 40 years, including two world wars the area had many tenants, even some aircraft manufactures, and saw many motor racing names established. Regrettably during WW2 and controlled by the Ministry of Aircraft Production serious surface deterioration started and eventually even pedestrian access was prohibited. The unusable track soon passed into Vickers Ltd hands when the then Ministry of

Supply stating that racing could not commence before 1950. Post war reconstruction was not possible. After 110 years plans are now afoot to protect the remnants of that hallowed track. The owners of various parts of the track are being guided by the Historic England’s “Heritage at Risk’ register and they will now be protected. Sandown’s ownership and activities varied and also participated in WW2 activities. It became available for motor racing again in 1962 (horse racing followed in 1964). Since restarting the racing has had several major event promoters and four track profiles and countless safety variations. Included in Sandown’s current 56 years of motor sport the Victorian Historic Racing Registers meetings for Historic Cars commenced 27years ago and would be fair to assume that the of competing cars at those Historic events would out number all of Brooklands entries over their v40 years. PS - Yeah, OK, there are a few more cars around now.

his year the Victorian Historic Racing Register, organizers of this annual Historic Sandown meeting, will pay tribute to one of its ambassadors, Alfredo Costanzo, who will retire from his racing career at the circuit where he made his debut.

Elfin Bathurst 1968

Born in Calabria, Italy, Costanzo was Australia’s foremost domestic open wheeler driver in the late 70s and early 80s, proving equally adapt at winning races in the powerful Formula 5000 class as much as the nimble Formula Pacific cars that replaced them. Under the patronage of Porsche Cars Australia distributor Alan Hamilton,Costanzo won four Australian Drivers’ Championships, the CAMS Gold Star. His titles straddling the transition from F5000 to Formula Atlantic based Pacific cars. Costanzo commenced his Formula 5000 career racing a Lola T332 which he purchased in partnership with his brother in law and team mechanic, Marino Ciuffetelli. Marino was responsible for preparing Costanzo’s race car and they shared three years competing in the Rothmans series from 1977 to 1979. They were able to secure sponsorship from Stock 84 Brandy and competed in all of the scheduled races for the 1979/80 F5000 race series. In 1981 Costanzo made the switch to race under Alan Hamilton in the same Lola T430 as part of the Porsche Racing team.

Despite winning numerous races and championships in various classes of open wheel racing, Alfie Costanzo never achieved his goal of winning the Australian Grand Prix. He competed in 11 AGP’s between 1969 and 1984, with a best finish of 4th in 1980 and again in 1984. On both occasions he was the first resident Australian driver to finish behind international Formula One drivers. Alf led from the start of the 1983 Australian Grand Prix, and built up a small lead over eventual winner Roberto Moreno of Brazil, before the diff in his Tiga FA81 failed on lap 25. Moreno later admitted that Costanzo would have been very hard to catch or pass. Although formula cars have evolved and have generally gotten faster over time, Costanzo still holds an outright lap record for a still active Australian race circuit. His time of 50.16 seconds set in the F5000 Lola T430-Chevrolet for the 2.41 km Symmons Plains Raceway has stood unchallenged since 23 March 1980. Pics Courtesy Autopics.com.au

Tiga FA83 - Sandown 1983

The first of Costanzo’s four Gold Stars was won utilising a conventional Lola T430, but the following 1981 title, the last Formula 5000 national level title ever held globally, utilised a McLaren M26, modified for the task by Tiga Race Cars. Costanzo won the 1982 and 1983 Australian Drivers’ Championships driving a Tiga FA81 powered by a 1.6-litre, 4 cyl Ford BDA engine. Driving the FA81, Costanzo also finished second to longtime rival John Bowe in his similarly powered Ralt RT4/85 in the 1984 championship, before Alan Hamilton pulled out of open wheel racing following Costanzo’s 4th place at the 1984 Australian Grand Prix leaving Costanzo without a drive and into semi-retirement.

My car is a 1972 XA Hardtop that has been restored as a race replica of the 1973 John Goss/Kevin Bartlett car they raced at Bathurst. In the 1973Bathurst 1000 John Goss put his car on pole and lead for about 2/3rds of the race until he got caught up with a couple of back markers that had an accident, John had to eventually retire due to damage sustained in that accident. My car was restored about nine years ago and whilst I have tried to keep it as per Johns 73 car I have taken advantage of some later technology. My car runs a 393 ci stroker, 5 speed Tremac, full floater rear. HP is around 490hp which would be a little more than John had in 73. I compete in all the VIC Historic events running in Regularity.

histories

This is the basic history of this one off F1 Jack Brabham car. The car was originally constructed for Jack to race in the 1968 F1 season with a 3 litre Repco Brabham engine. The FIA changed regulations in the midst of 1968 requiring bags in the tanks. The car had then been constructed and it was too hard to make it comply with this requirement according to Ron Tauranac. They then shipped the car to Australia and fitted it with a 2.5 litre Tasman series Repco Brabham engine for Jack to run in the Tasman Series. The car was held up at the wharves due to a wharf strike and missed the majority of the Australian Tasman series. Jack first raced the car at Sandown in 1969 and came third in its first race. He then raced it at Mt Panorama where he beat the lap record by over 4.5 second and won. The car was then sold to Repco who used it for promotional purposes. Many years later it was sold to a doctor in NSW and then to Bib Stillwell who raced it extensively in historic racing. After Bib’s death the car was sold to England where it was also raced in historic meetings. It then went to an American who used it in historic racing and in 2011 I bought it from him and have used it ever since. Peter Larner in Melbourne rebuilt the engine extensively with many new parts and it has subsequently been refreshed again last year. It currently has the 3 litre F1 engine in it. Peter Strauss

bob jane

Bob Jane Bob Jane grew up in Brunswick, an innercity suburb of Melbourne. His passion for racing began in the early 1950s as a champion bicycle rider, holding many state records before turning to four wheels. In the later 1950s, he started Bob Jane Autoland, a company that distributed parts for Jaguar and Alfa Romeo. Through this venture, a love of cars and motor sport blossomed and he first entered competitive racing in Australia in 1956; by 1960, he was racing with some of Australia’s top sedan drivers. Racing career In 1961, Jane and co-driver Harry Firth won the Armstrong 500 at Phillip Island, Victoria, driving a Mercedes-Benz 220SE. Jane and Firth won the race again the following year, the last before the event moved to Mount Panorama at Bathurst, New South Wales, retaining the Armstrong 500 name.[1] Jane, driving for the Ford works team, won a further two Armstrong 500s at the new venue, the first with Firth in 1963 and the second in 1964 with George Reynolds as co-driver.[2] [3] Despite the change of venue, Jane is officially credited with winning Australia’s most famous endurance race four times in a row, something no other driver, not even nine-time race winner Peter Brock, has ever done. Jane won the Australian Touring Car Championship (now known as the V8 Supercars Championship) in 1962, 1963, 1971 and 1972. His 1971 ATCC win was in a Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 with a 427 cubic inch engine. Jane was forced by a rule change to replace the 427 engine with a 350 cubic inch engine for the 1972 championship but the Camaro still managed to beat the opposition, which included Allan Moffat’s Ford Boss 302 Mustang, Ian “Pete” Geoghegan’s Super Falcon, and Norm Beechey’s Holden HT Monaro GTS350. Of the 38 races he started in the ATCC, he finished on the podium 21 times. Jane also won the 1963 Australian GT Championship at the wheel of a Jaguar E-type, and the Marlboro Sports Sedan Series, in both 1974 and 1975, at his own Calder Park Raceway driving a Holden Monaro GTS 350 (at times he also drove his Repco V8 powered Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1 which was mostly driven by John Harvey).

in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, Jane taking over the promoting and staging of the Grand Prix in the hope of Calder Park being granted a round of the Formula One World Championship (an ambitious plan at best as Calder was a 1.6 km long circuit which the faster cars lapped in less than 40 seconds). The 1980 Grand Prix was open to Formula 5000, Formula Pacific and Formula One cars and was won by Australia’s 1980 Formula One World Champion Alan Jones driving his World Championship winning Williams FW07B-Ford. Second home was fellow F1 driver Bruno Giacomelli driving his Alfa Romeo 179, with Ligier F1 driver Didier Pironi finishing 3rd, driving an Elfin MR8 Formula 5000 for leading Australian team Ansett Team Elfin. From 1981 until 1984 the races were run under Formula Mondial regulations and Jane succeeded in attracting many of the best Formula One drivers of the era. Each race from 1981-1984 was won by those driving the popular Ralt RT4-Ford. The 1981 Australian Grand Prix was won by future F1 driver Roberto Moreno from Brazil. Finishing second, also in an RT4 was 1981 World Champion Nelson Piquet (Brazil) with Australian Geoff Brabham finishing 3rd in his RT4. Alan Jones and Ligier’s Jacques Laffite also participated in the race, though both failed to finish. The 1981 race was the first time since 1968 that the AGP had two or more, current or past World Champions, on the starting grid. On that occasion, Jim Clark (1st), Graham Hill (3rd), Denny Hulme (9th), and Australia’s own triple World Champion Jack Brabham (DNF) participated as the race was part of the popular off-season Tasman Series. For the 1982 Australian Grand Prix, Jane again attracted F1 drivers in Piquet, Laffite, the then retired Jones, plus future Formula One World Champion Alain Prost. Frenchman Prost won the 100 lap race from Laffite and 1981 winner Roberto Moreno. When Prost later won his second AGP in Adelaide in 1986 to win his second of four Formula One World Championships, he became the only driver to ever win the Australian Grand Prix in both World Championship and non-championship formats.

Jane retired from competitive motor racing at the end of 1981 due to sciatica. At the time of his retirement he had been driving a 6.0 litre Chevrolet Monza in the Australian Sports Sedan Championship. After giving up driving, Jane asked touring car star Peter Brock to drive the Monza in the re-formed Australian GT Championship. Brock raced the car in 1982 and 1983 before Jane sold the car in early 1984 to Re-Car owner Allan Browne.

The 1983 race, while only attracting one current F1 driver in Jacques Laffite, as well as Alan Jones, who had made an abortive F1 comeback earlier in the year, did attract 24 entries (mostly the Ford powered RT4), including former winner Moreno, Geoff Brabham and future F1 driver Allen Berg. Moreno won his second AGP from local drivers John Smith and Laffite. Geoff Brabham finished 4th with Jones in 5th and Charlie O’Brien. Reigning Australian Drivers’ Champion Alfredo Costanzo led the race early in his Tiga FA81 before suffering a differential failure on lap 25. Moreno would later claim that had ‘Alfie’ not retired then he would likely have won as he didn’t believe he would have caught the Australian. The 1983 race was the last time the Grand Prix was included as a round of the Australian Drivers’ Championship.

Australian Grand Prix From 1980 to 1984, the Australian Grand Prix was held at his Calder Park Raceway

During 1984 it was announced that from 1985, the Australian Grand Prix would be held on the Streets of Adelaide and would be the 16th and final round of the 1985 Formula One season, giving the Grand Prix

“World Championship” status for the first time in its history. Despite this, Jane was still able to successfully attract current Formula One drivers to participate in the 1984 Australian Grand Prix. Headlining the ‘imports’ was three time (including 1984) World Champion Niki Lauda, and 1982 World Champion Keke Rosberg. Joining them were 1984 Ligier drivers Andrea de Cesaris and François Hesnault and 1981 and 1983 AGP winner Roberto Moreno to face off against local

stars Costanzo and 1984 Gold Star champion John Bowe. Moreno would win his 3rd AGP in 4 years from Rosberg, who fought back from a bad start and a collision another car, with de Cesaris putting in the drive of the race to finish 3rd after starting early from the pit lane and being almost half a lap down when he took the green flag. Meet Dave behind the Pits here today

T

he ‘Dyno’ Dave Bennett autobiography is one of the great success stories of the Australian high performance automotive industry. Fuelled by an innate interest in things mechanical, Dyno Dave was destined to work in an industry based on that interest. Over a lifetime of intense work he established one of the great Australian automotive businesses, Perfectune–Yella Terra. From humble beginnings offering dynamometer based tuning services, the company grew and developed into a giant of the Australian aftermarket and indeed had considerable influence in the OEM market for more than 40 years. Along the way he established the enormously popular and successful Yella Terra brand, supplying exchange high performance Holden six cylinder heads that took the market by storm. That success led to further high performance engine products such as roller rockers, brand new high performance V8 heads and even extensive CNC based machining for industry. Since the late 1950s, Dave has had an ongoing involvement with ‘big time’ Australian motorsport in many ways. Names from the past, like Murray Carter, Len Lukey, Pete Geoghegan, Norm Beechey, Eddie omas and in more recent times, most significantly Peter Brock.

42

He purchased a new 186 HR HOLDEN Premier sedan in 1967 that he upgraded and called the ’Sprint GT’ with the intention of making an ‘up market’ car with spectacular performance, to be sold through a local Holden Dealer. This car created much media attention. Holden were especially interested in the boosted performance and had discussions with Dave, eventually leading to the development of the famous XU1 Torana. Subsequently the introduction of the Yella Terra heads for Holden 6 and V8 engines, of which some 250,000 were sold. From a performance perspective, Perfectune’s connections and resulting contract with HOLDEN for cylinder head services, was pivotal in the development of the business. Dave had the foresight to spend money on highly productive capital equipment, developing a small operation into a significant business. Perfectune modified heads were used on seven of Brock’s nine BATHURST 1000 winning cars, not to mention all other competitors and their road going equivalent production vehicles, L34, A9X and SLR 5000. All but a few ‘BROCK’ Commodores, as well as Police ‘Interceptor’ Commodores were fitted with Perfectune modified cylinder heads.

Historic Sandown 2018

In the early days, Dave drag raced many successful cars. He was the first to run a Holden Monaro GTS 327 at Calder Park Drag strip in 1968, one week after release. is car was undefeated in all but one run in 18 months of competing in Victoria, NSW and Queensland events. He was the first to win the National Points Championship in 1969, later called ‘Mr Drag Racer’ . He then retired from racing to concentrate on the business. He was in a way ‘an unsung back room supplier’ to a great many racers and car enthusiasts for many years. ‘Dyno’ Dave, The Yella Terra Story is a ‘must read’ for all high performance auto enthusiasts. RRP $59.95. ISBN 978-0-949398-29-1. 256 A4 Pages, 330 Illustrations, Hard Cover. histories My Brabham BT 29 is one of the five 29s now in Australia, of course they were all sent to USA for the Formula B series with twin-cam Ford Lotus engines. At the time Formula 2 in Europe was moving to 16 valve engines. Mine was just another customer car, restored by a fanatic in California, a wonderful example of the period before they put slicks and wings on them. The beaut blue Brabham is much more potent than its driver! Wayne Wilson

COOLDRIVE HERITAGE: A CENTURY OF AUTOMOTIVE EXPERTISE

F

ew privately-owned Australian companies can boast four generations of the one family in the same industry for a century … but CoolDrive can. CoolDrive Auto Parts is today

Foundations were laid 100 years ago in 1918, when current Chief Executive Officer John Blanchard’s grandfather, Jack Blanchard, commenced the journey for the Blanchard family into the automotive industry with the purchase of Mac’s Motors

CEO John Blanchard’s father and Jack’s son W.J (John), known to everyone in the business today simply as Senior, was born in 1934 and commenced working for his father as an apprentice mechanic after leaving school when he was 14 years old. Jack always said that his son John actually started working when he could walk, as the family home was next to the garage with a connecting door; and what better playground than a large garage actively repairing motor cars! What was originally Mac’s Motors had its name changed to ABC Motors when Jack’s business acumen saw him keen to become the first place a motorist would consider for their automotive needs, ensuring placement at the front of the phone book - a stroke of genius that secured its ongoing success. During the Second World War, Jack’s wife Sylvia also operated a private hire car service from the Clifton Hill garage and is thought to be one of the first registered female taxi drivers in Victoria. W.J left the family business when the garage was acquired by the CRB and struck out on his own.“After working in the family business with my father it was a tough call to suddenly be working for bosses outside,” W.J admits now. “I worked firstly with VW Australia as Service Manager, then as Service Manager for Kenworth in Preston, then with Regent Motors marketing Land Rovers, then on to being a Sales Engineer with Girling Brakes. “This gave me broad experience right across the spectrum of the motor industry and has stood the family well since then.” In 1960 John Blanchard was born to W.J and wife Shirley and by 1973 the family found itself in Malaysia as Senior obtained a three year contract to work with Inchcape where he was Project Manager for the assembly services division in Shah Alam. During this period in Malaysia, W.J was involved with the fitting of air conditioners to imported cars. Such was the humid climate in Malaysia that the cars were being imported 50 at a time without any heating equipment and the instruction was to fit air conditioners in place of heaters; they were fitting perhaps 200 cars a day at the factory.

in Clifton Hill. The garage was located opposite the Clifton Hill railway gate, and this was to play a major part in the future of the family as in 1956 the Country Roads Board (CRB) compulsorily acquired the family garage to construct a railway overpass.

Historic Sandown 2018

After the three year contract expired, W.J and the family returned to Australia and with the opportunity to sell the Unicla airconditioning products with which he had been working with in Malaysia. Starting the business at home, with Shirley working from

the kitchen table taking orders and W.J. doing deliveries from the garage which doubled as a storage unit, Melbourne Auto Air (as it was then known) quickly grew.   In the years that followed, the Blanchard family dedicated themselves to the task and soon W.J. was joined at the helm by son John W, now CEO. In turn his son Tim, great-grandson of Jack Blanchard, came on board as well and is now the General Manager of Marketing. From its original focus on passenger car air-conditioning equipment and expertise, the business that eventually came to be called CoolDrive quickly expanded into a variety of other automotive-related sectors, such as rotating electrical, including alternators and starter motors, engine cooling, underbody and accessories. CoolDrive then expanded further into electrical accessories, with a focus on “life-styling” customers’ vehicles for their chosen activity, such as driving lights, towing accessories, dash cams, safety gear, 4WD kits and more. 2016 saw the company initiate a new specialised area of growth when it significantly expanded its engine management parts and service offering, which was originally introduced in a small way in mid-2013. The love for all things automotive extended to Motor racing which has always been a Blanchard family passion – in the DNA as they say. W.J. is a long-time key figure in the Historic racing movement, and son John raced Formula Ford and Touring Cars very successfully. His son Tim races too, originally in

Formula Ford in which he claimed championship victory in 2007, and today at the highest level of the sport, Supercars, where the CoolDrive Commodore is run by Brad Jones Racing. In a lovely gesture, Tim honoured his father at the recent Retro Round at the Sandown 500, when the CoolDrive Commodore was represented in the distinctive colours John’s BMW wore in 1993, his only full season in Touring Cars. Wearing the yellow-and-red of that memorable year rather than the traditional blue-and-white CoolDrive colours, the re-livered Commodore was a proud moment for the father and son racers. “It’s pretty special to honour my Dad’s time in Touring Cars. The livery resonated with a lot of older fans which of course is what the Retro Round was all about. To have Dad come back from overseas early to see the car race was pretty cool,” Tim Blanchard said. John Blanchard was certainly moved by Tim’s tribute. “It brought back a lot of memories and I was really proud to see Tim honouring that time. I had no idea he was doing it, I was completely shocked when I received the mockup, it was one of those ‘wow’ moments.”

industry. CEO John Blanchard recognises the importance of directing significant investment into developing its brand, its staff and its product offering, to provide customers with a comprehensive range of products complemented by expert advice from CoolDrive’s experienced team of professionals. Today, CoolDrive Auto Parts distributes over 70,000 parts annually from all major automotive parts and accessory brands, including its own Jayair, Jayrad, Jaylec, HULK 4x4, Aunger and AFI labels. And it can trace all of this back to roots in a humble Clifton Hill garage 100 years ago

Last year CoolDrive celebrated 40 years in operation, and then this year changed its name to CoolDrive Auto Parts, to better reflect its area of speciality and in recognition of its long-standing focus. The Blanchard name is now one of the bestknown in the automotive

Spitfire 1296 Red I have entered my 1973 Aztec AF3 ( Group Q ) car in the Historic Sandown November event and will be making the trek from Western Australia to compete. I last drove this car at Sandown in September 1973, so it is a “fair time between drinks. A bit of background: From 1967 to 1969 I worked as a race mechanic on the Brabham F2/ F1/ Tasman and Indianapolis Teams. On my return to Australia I founded Aztec Racing and built several Formula Fords. The first (Aztec AR8) ran third in the inaugural FF race at Sandown in November 1969, ably driven by Bob Minogue. I recovered this car some time ago and am restoring it for FF events next year. I soon realized that I had a choice between building race cars in Australia or providing for my wife and young family, so I chose the latter. The F3 car I have entered was the last I Aztec built . After the 1973 season the car was stored until I brought it across to W.A and prepared it for racing here. I have been competing in Historic Racing with it in W.A for several years. It may well be the only car in the event still campaigned by the original owner/driver/designer/constructor.

histories As a teenager growing up in New Zealand Phil Spender idolised Paul Fahey racing his Shelby Mustang. This was the inspiration for him working for Ford around the world for over 35 years. No 104 is a tribute to Paul Fahey, the car was procured in Michigan in 2003 while Phil was working as the Program Manager on the 05 MY Mustang. The car came to Australia in 2005 after doing some events at Michigan Speedway and Waterford Hills in the US and now regularly competes at Victorian historic events. Phil Spender
