ERNST LUTHI - Alpine A110 Alpine A110 When Jean Redele founded La Societe des Automobiles Alpine in 1955, in Dieppe, France, he had only one thing in mind – to build a car that was simple, based on existing Renault technology and ready for competition It is this design, with a tubular chassis (beams and backbone) and the streamlined fiberglass body that makes the A110 such a great car to drive. The Alpine A110 was first produced in 1961, and it borrowed many parts from the Renault 8, with some Alpine magic added to it. It was light, barely tipping the scales beyond 600kg in racing form,

and so could ring plenty of go out of smaller capacity rear-mounted engines. Our car began its life in 1971 in Mexico, where it was number 467 of the 508 A110s built under license by DINA. DINA bought a mold from Alpine and made their own fiberglass bodies, with the rest of the parts shipped from France. So, while the cars were built far from Alpine’s homeland, they are functionally identical to their French counterparts. When we completed our first Targa Tasmania Tour in 2007, we decided that we wanted to return to compete. Thinking about a special car suitable for

Winton Festival of Speed Page 7

ERNST LUTHI - Alpine A110 Targa, the Alpine A110 was THE rally car when I grew up, so my thoughts quickly turned to that.” We spent some time searching, and in late 2007 we flew to Auckland for a weekend and drove to Tauranga to view the car. We bought it, and so started our love affair with Mademoiselle, as we call her, with her Spanish temperament in French clothing. We spent the next three years rebuilding her in time for our first Targa event in 2010. The car started out with standard trim and R12 1289cc four-cylinder push rod engine with a radiator at the back and a single downdraught Weber carburetor. The Mexican factory never changed their mold to introduce Alpine’s updated A110 body, so we have maintained our car’s pre1969 body despite being built in 1971” We completely rebuilt the car as a tarmac rally car in the spirit of classic period club racing, keeping the original engine block but enlarging it to 1397cc (similar to the R12 1.4L launched in Australia in 1974). The single downdraught Weber carburetor was replaced by two 40DOCE side draught Webers (as in the Gordini version) and the radiator was moved from the back to the front (one of 3 factory options). It puts out 90 horsepower at the wheels at 5,700 RPM and 130Nm of torque consistently between 3500 and 5000 RPM. Suspension is standard, with front independent wishbone and rear independent swinging semiaxles with trailing radius arms. The A110 already had discs all ‘round as standard and also two shock absorbers on each side at the rear. Steering is by rack and pinion with a quick steering rack

fitted, so all up the handling package is very nice.” With a full roll cage, FIA race seats, 6-point harness and FIA-approved fuel tank for tarmac rallying, the car weighs in at just under 800 kilograms. Despite its rear-engined layout the A110 is very predictable and steering is precise. It has a low centre of gravity, so it’s very stable on the road and loves to eat up narrow and twisty roads. It’s a great feeling to move from one corner to the other with ease, pointing the nose in the right direction and then feeling the engine in the rear push the car through the corner.” Nothing is known about the car’s history in Mexico, but it’s unlikely that it was raced. We began its racing career in Australia in 2010, and have since completed Targa Tasmania five times (earning four class wins), Targa Adelaide twice and Targa High Country three times. In 2014 we ran in Targa New Zealand where we came second in class and second in the classic index of performance. It has also run twice at the Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport and participated successfully in the 2018 Victorian Hillclimb Championship (2nd in Class) and Retro Race Fest and Tasman Trophy events . The first step of driving the Alpine is actually getting into the driver’s seat! The roof height is just 1.13 meters and the car is only 1.45m wide and 3.9m long. Inside, your feet are slightly off-set to the centre, but the pedals are in the right spot. It’s like a TARDIS – it gets a lot bigger once you’re inside!

Results: 1st............................................... 2nd................................................3rd......................................... Built in Sydney 2010 by Paul Knott, a clever engineer. Powered by a 170 cubic inch, 6 cylinder engine producing 270horse power. The car was awarded ‘Best Presented Car’ in 2011 & 2012 - a feat never achieved before. Driven by the very experienced driver Lyn Brown, now 70 years old, they missed the NSW Historic Touring Car Championship by 2 pts in 2012, after pitting for a broken exhaust. They returned and won the 2013 title. The car was sold to David Forbes in 2014 and has a new home in Nagambie, Victoria.

Andy White is looking forward to turning his hand to circuit racing after driving old Volvos in forest and tarmac rallies for the past twenty years. “I love all forms of motor sport and am excited to be racing on the tracks where I’ve spectated and seen on TV since I was a child.” Andy has been a consistent front runner in Targa Tasmania with six consecutive podium finishes and a Classic win in 2014 aboard the sensational Gulf-liveried 1961 Volvo 122.. Andy also owns a rare factory built rally Volvo which won Group 2 class twice in the Southern Cross International rallies of the late ‘60’s.

In Nov 2016 Andy drove the car to 7th O/R in the 50th Anniversary running of the Southern Cross taking four fastest stage times against much more modern Nissans and Escorts. Andy was starting to prepare a Volvo for Group Nb competition when he seized the opportunity to purchase the superbly prepared Volvo from Mick Stupka. “Mick is a great car builder and I’m making only minimal changes to gearing and spring rates. I hope to run three meetings in the remainder of ‘18 and looking forward to a full season in ‘19.”

The car is the first of 3 Norax sports cars, called a C type C prototype, which were built in Adelaide in 1987/88. The cars were built at the Norax Lamp factory by three friends, Ian Davis designed the car, Lance Wridgeway, who owned the factory and Brian Randall who did the body and wheels. David Mackie bought the car from Ian Davis in about 1993 and I in turn purchased it from david in 2012. I sold the Grantinni 3B to finance the deal. It is based on a space frame, fibreglass body, Mazda 12A PP motor and VW transaxle.

Results: 1st............................................... 2nd................................................3rd......................................... My car is a 1962 Lynx Formula Junior. This year is my first year of FJ racing (racing in general) and have so far won the Jim Clark Memorial Race at Wakefield Park on the opening weekend and won the M Class section of the Phil Turvey Race at Winton Short Track, as well as broke the track record at Winton for a Formula Junior as recorded from 2007 onwards (I think due to the new track surface). The car raced in 1962 and I have a photo of it on the track at Sandown chasing Bruce McLaren.

Performance Cylinder Heads The Head Stud Development Co. has been preparing cylinder heads for high performance engines since the early 1980’s. Our involvement in motorsport began with development of cylinder heads for Perkins Motorsport and HDT. From the early 308 carburetor V8 engines through to the fuel injected power plant up to and including the alloy headed Chev engines. Today, with that background, we are able to adapt our knowledge and experience to a wide range of cylinder head options. We offer a wide range of services which include: • • • • • •

Manufacturing of custom made engine valves Pre-fabricated intake manifolds General engineering Complete engine re-builds for both performance and standard applications Cylinder head reconditioning Modification, flow bench testing, development and preparation of cylinder heads for any application

We are able to tailor a cylinder head and/or engine package to suit your requirement and your budget. The Head Stud Development Co, ‘HSD’, looks forward to being able to assist with your project. Phone: (03) 9553 2517 Fax: (03) 9532 2485 Email: sales@headstuddevelopment.com

Results: 1st............................................... 2nd................................................3rd......................................... “Tigger” as she is fondly known may not look like much of a race car from the outside but her heart is certainly strong. Tigger is a 1964 Austin Healey Sprite and is owned by Greg Prunster who has owned her for many year. Driven for the last 3 years by Simon Meyer who is an ex-Karter winning numerous state and national titles during his karting days. Simon and Tigger have slowly been gaining speed and confidence and is now sticking it regularly to the Porsches and American muscle cars. Along with brother, Damien Meyer, you should see some very interested racing at Winton out of Car 131 (Tigger) and car 13 driven by Damien Meyer
