On behalf of the TCDA Board of Directors, I want to welcome you to this year’s convention. We are so glad that you have chosen to spend a few days of your precious summer with us in beautiful San Antonio. We have a vast array of workshops, music reading sessions, and special concerts lined up this year, including a sing-along performance of Mozart’s REQUIEM. Don’t forget to spend some time in the Exhibit Hall, where over 600 vendors will be ready to visit with you. This will be our second year to share convention space with TODA and TBA, and this agreement continues to benefit all three music organizations. I hope this will be a time of renewing old friendships and making new friends. Take advantage of your time here in San Antonio to get to know someone new. That is what TCDA is all about: COMMUNITY! the TCDA Board of Directors COLLEGE/COMMUNITY VP Dr. Betsy Cook Weber has withdrawn her candidacy for President-Elect.
Dr. Pamela Elrod Huffman
has served as Director of Choral Activities at the SMU Meadows School of the Arts since 2007, overseeing the MM Choral Conducting program and directing the choral ensembles. Her career spans all levels—elementary and secondary to university, symphonic, and church choirs. Prior to SMU, Huffman was Assistant Director of Choral Studies at Texas Tech University. An accomplished vocalist, she has been a guest artist with university, professional, community and church choirs. From 1988 to 1999, Huffman sang with the late Robert Shaw, performing and recording with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, the Robert Shaw Choral Institutes, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus. Since 2003, she has been a member of the Grammynominated professional ensemble Conspirare under the direction of Craig Hella Johnson. Her article on Shaw’s warm-ups can be found on the Singer Network website, and an article on Shaw’s rehearsal techniques appears in the February 2013 issue of Southwestern Musician. Huffman is a member of TCDA, TMEA, ACDA, and Pi Kappa Lambda, and serves as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas and throughout the U.S. She was the 2010–12 VP of TCDA’s College/Community Division. Huffman holds BME and MM degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

A couple of years ago, I was enjoying a meal with TCDA Board members after a long day of meetings, and chatting with a Board member about the responsibilities that go with serving TCDA. I remember saying, “Why on earth would anyone take on the role of President? I can’t imagine the time commitment and workload!” My colleague replied, “You should consider it.” I burst out laughing and said something like, “No way! I would never consider doing that job!” But the seed was planted. Serving as TCDA’s Vice President of College/ Community stands as one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and those two years were rich with hard work, new friendships, and valuable insights. I came away with a lasting commitment to—and fierce passion for—this remarkable institution. Service to TCDA is now a non-negotiable in my life—and the opportunity to carry out its mission as President would be a privilege. The accomplishments of Past Presidents Bob Horton,

Amy Allibon, Jeff Rice, and their distinguished predecessors form an extraordinary legacy that, if elected, I will work diligently to honor and maintain. A final thought—Kari Gilbertson and Mark Rohwer represent the very best of what music education is about—I am humbled to have my name included on any list with theirs, but even more humbled to be on this very special one.
Kari Gilbertson
has been teaching choral music for 24 years at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Most recently, she was named Head Choir Director at Lake Highlands HS in Richardson ISD. Prior to that, she spent 15 years at Forest Meadow Junior High. At Lake Highlands, Gilbertson directed many Sweepstakes and Award winning choirs. She received honors as “Secondary Teacher of the Year” at Richardson ISD, “PTA Lifetime Member” and “PTA Teacher of Excellence,” and was nominated for “Disney Teacher of the Year” in 2006. Gilbertson graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she was a member of The Concordia Choir. An active speaker, conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, Gilbertson has been a contributing author for the textbook series entitled Spotlight on Music and Experiencing Choral Music. Most recently, she was named a Lead Author on Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill’s national choral textbook adoption project. She is a member of ACDA, TCDA, TMAA, and TMEA, and recently served as VP of TCDA’s Middle School/Junior High Division. Gilbertson holds a MM degree with an emphasis in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University.
If elected…
Nearly 20 years ago, when I left Minnesota to return to Texas, my colleagues asked, “Won’t you miss the choirs?” They obviously didn’t know Texas and they certainly didn’t know TCDA! This association has played a pivotal role in my development as a successful teacher and choir director, and I relish the opportunity to give back to an organization whose sole purpose is to support and inspire the leaders of choral music. You! I was ever mindful of these expectations when I served on the TCDA Board in 2011–2013 as we navigated our organization into exciting changes. I’m proud of our work to ensure that our organization thrives and prospers for the next generation of directors. I am a person who likes to consider the past but looks to the future—I understand the complexity of change, while honoring tradition. I know that my strong organizational and communication skills will be vital as we continue to find ways to expand our influence. I would like to see a continued expansion of the ways TCDA can be a multi-generational
resource for choral musicians. As I tell my students, “It takes a village to raise a Choir Director” and I believe there are ways to keep our “virtual village” in touch with each other beyond convention. Finally, my experience with the elementary, middle school, high school as well as church, gives me an understanding of each division. I believe that my experience would be valuable in guiding the important task of inviting new members, selecting music, and planning convention content and activities. I am honored to be a nominee for President, and I look forward to the opportunity to serve and advocate for the entire membership of TCDA.
Dr. Mark Rohwer
has served as Director of Choral Activities at Flower Mound High School since the school’s opening in 1999. Now in his 23rd year, his choirs have received consistent Sweepstakes Awards at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contests, and Outstanding Performance or Best in Class Awards. The Jaguar Chorale was invited to perform twice at TMEA and also in Kansas City at the ACDA Southwest Division convention. Rohwer is a member of TCDA and TMEA, and was chair of both TMEA Region 24 and Area A, and a section leader for the All-State Men’s Choirs in 2004 and 2010. Rohwer served as the High School Division VP of TCDA in 2011–13. He served on the staff of summer All-State Choir Camps at Baylor University, the University of North Texas, Texas Christian University, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is an active clinician and conductor throughout Texas and has presented at TMEA as well as across the country. Rohwer has been published in Southwestern Musician, The Journal of Music Teacher Education, The Choral Journal, The International Journal of Community Music, Texas Music Education Research, and the Southwestern ACDA Publication Common Times. He holds degrees in music education from Northwestern University, the Eastman School of Music, and Ohio State University.

It is not hyperbole to say that TCDA has molded, focused and enriched my professional life. To a non-native, Texas choral music is bewildering in its complexity and scale, and it was TCDA that helped me come to terms with what it means to love, teach and lead people in the pursuit of the excellence of singing together. My first TCDA convention taught me so much, and I met people who helped me teach better and reach higher. I have had that experience each and every year since. It is an honor to be considered alongside a slate of other candidates who are experts and musical role models. I have a great deal to offer TCDA as PresidentElect in energy, organization and a willingness to listen to the membership and address the many areas of choral music they represent. As

I move through my third decade of teaching, I am more energetic and optimistic than ever about the importance of choral music in people’s lives, and the role that TCDA can play in maintaining that importance. Times change, technology changes, and our association must stay abreast of these changes. What has not changed, however, is our desire as people to commit to singing songs that connect with each other, learn from and be inspired by each other, and lift each other up in person and in communion with one another. If elected, I pledge to keep us updated and current, but more important, I pledge to continue serving TCDA as we mold, focus, and enrich each other while we give of ourselves to the choral art.

Dr. Lynne Gackle
is Professor of Ensembles and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University where she conducts the Baylor Bella Voce (Women’s Ensemble) and the Baylor Concert Choir. She is an active clinician, conductor and adjudicator for choral clinics, honor choirs, workshops and festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. Gackle served as president of ACDA-Florida and the ACDA Southern Division. The Florida ACDA chapter awarded her the Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award for dedicated service, leadership and excellence. She served in various R&S roles within ACDA, including National R&S Chair for Children’s Choirs and the Southern Division Chair for Women’s Choirs. Gackle serves on the editorial board of the Choral Journal. She is editor of Choral Artistry for the Singer with Walton Music and the Lynne Gackle Choral Series for Colla Voce Music, Inc. She has written for the Choral Journal and contributed to the MENC publication Music at the Middle Level: Building Strong Programs. She is author of Finding Ophelia’s Voice, Opening Ophelia’s Heart: Nurturing the Adolescent Female Voice, published by Heritage Music Press, and served as a contributing author to the GIA publication Conducting Women’s Choirs: Strategies for Success. Gackle was awarded Baylor’s Outstanding Faculty Award in Research in 2012. She is a member of ACDA, MENC, TMEA, TCDA, ISME and NATS. Gackle received a BME from Louisiana State University and a MM degree and PhD degree from the University of Miami.

Before I ever became a Texan, I knew about TCDA and its value in the state and throughout the nation. I came to conventions whenever possible because of its reputation for excellent in-service workshops and fabulous opportunities to preview choral music for all ages. “If you want to get repertoire ideas, go to TCDA!” Once in Waco, I found myself thrilled with the chance to meet colleagues each summer to discuss

teaching, music, techniques and forge special relationships with friends throughout the state. It would be an honor to serve TCDA as VP for College and Community choirs. I have a keen interest in both areas and believe they serve a unique niche within the fabric of choral music in our state and throughout the country. As a collegiate teacher/conductor, I teach both the music “major” and the “non-major” chorus singer. To continue to provide students with choral experiences that create and foster the desire for lifelong singing is extremely important to me. To mentor future choral educators and encourage students who ultimately might sing in community choruses to serve on Boards of choral arts organizations, and hopefully, encourage their own children in choral music, is an exciting opportunity! I know the inherent value found in the partnership of choral education within the schools and communities, and if elected, I will strive to reach out to these groups by strengthening opportunities for choral music with students, future choral educators and singers of all ages.
Dennis S. Richardson,
Director of Choral Activities at Del Mar College, has taught choral music in Texas for over 37 years in a variety of settings ranging from rural to urban and elementary to university. He studied choral conducting at West Texas A&M University with Houston Bright, Hugh Sanders, and George Umberson; at Texas State University with Kenneth Fulton; and at Texas Tech University with Donald Bailey and Kenneth Davis. Richardson is in his ninth year as the Artistic Director of the Del Mar Master Chorus, a community choir serving the coastal bend of south Texas and sponsored by Del Mar College. Since 1984, Richardson has developed, organized and served Texas All-State choir camps for institutions across the state such as Texas State University, Texas Tech University, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University Kingsville, Baylor University and Del Mar College. As a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Richardson brings six years of experience as a communications officer to his credits. Richardson is active in TMEA, TMAA, TCDA, and ACDA. He served as a Texas All-State Choir Organizer, a High School Honor Choir Coordinator for divisional and national conventions, as the Southwestern ACDA Repertoire and Standards Chairman for Multi-Cultural and Ethnic Perspectives as well as a TMEA region officer and area audition chair. For the past ten years, Richardson served as the stage manager for the TMEA conventions where he is responsible for organizing the stage setup for the major concerts in Lila Cockrell Theatre. Choirs under his direction have performed for TMEA and ACDA conferences, by invitations at major festivals in Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Monterrey, Mexico, and at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York. In May 2014, Richardson made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall. He has presented consultation and staff development sessions for the following Texas school districts: Alice,
Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Donna, El Paso, Kingsville, Laredo, Lubbock, Port Lavaca, San Benito, Victoria and Weslaco. He has prepared symphony choruses for major performances in Lubbock, Victoria, Corpus Christi, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Richardson earned a BME from West Texas A&M University and an MM from Texas State University.

I would be excited to bring my organizational perspective and management skills to the board of TCDA. This association is one of the most reputable groups in the world and to serve at this level would be an honor. During my educational career, TCDA has been a valuable resource. I have gained numerous insights and developed the skills and techniques necessary to advance my teaching methods. My record of service to organizations over the last 30 years has given me a unique and thorough understanding of all the elements required for the operation of a successful conference. My military experiences have also given me an effective approach to achieving goals by understanding and leading people. I pledge to follow the proven practices that have been fruitful over the years and to listen to and act upon new ideas and suggestions to strengthen and enhance TCDA’s purposes and objectives.
ELEMENTARY VP Michele Hobizal
is in her 27th year of teaching and is an elementary music specialist at Wolman Elementary. For 15 years, she taught in Katy ISD at Pattison, WoodCreek, and now Wolman Elementary Schools. Previously at Pasadena, Bellville, Columbus and Alief school districts, Hobizal was named 2000 Teacher of the Year at Pattison Elementary and was a finalist candidate for the 2013 Teacher of the Year at Wolman. She is one of the founding directors of the Katy ISD District Elementary Honor Choir with invited performances at the 2007 and 2011 TMEA Conventions. She has been the TMEA Elementary VP for two terms, and during that time, she had the opportunity to invite many wonderful choirs and clinicians to the conventions and create a share space for Texas elementary music teachers using Edmodo. She is a cadre member of the Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts and was a member of the 2012 TEKS Fine Arts Review Committee. Hobizal holds a BME from Texas State University.

My goal is to continue providing choral instruction and strategies along with music advocacy to ensure the best for Texas music educators. I graduated from college with an instrumental background, and realized that my lack of choral knowledge and methodology was a huge minus in providing a proper education to my students. TCDA conventions gave me the tools, the friendships and the networking opportunities with fellow choral directors. My experience as a TMEA Elementary VP gave me the organizational skills and the desire to provide the best educational opportunities for Texas elementary choirs and general music classes.

Cyndie Lowry
is in her ninth year as General Music teacher and Choir Director at Mitchell Intermediate School in Conroe ISD. Lowry taught elementary music in Klein ISD for five years before taking time off to raise her three sons. Lowry organizes the District Wide Intermediate Honor Choir Audition and Concert for Conroe ISD and offers a summer music camp for incoming 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. Her choir had the honor of performing at the TMEA Conventions in 2008 and 2013. She has presented workshops at TCDA and TMEA as well as local in-service trainings in various districts. Lowry is an active member of TCDA and TMEA, and earned a BME/All Levels degree and Kodaly Certification from Sam Houston State University.

I began teaching in the fall of 1978 in Klein ISD. I loved teaching elementary students! Who wouldn’t love singing and playing games all day long? When I had my own children, I decided to stay home and be a full-time mom. Of course, that included volunteering at their schools along with teaching music in preschools (because you just can’t keep a good music teacher down!). I’ll never forget the first choir concert I attended when my son was in 8th grade. I wept with joy at the beauty of that concert. That was the beginning of many concerts and sparked my desire to return to teaching. In 2005, I began teaching at Mitchell Intermediate School in Conroe ISD and was encouraged to attend a TCDA Convention by my co-teacher and friend, Connie Horton. I was so impressed with the workshops, clinicians and new music offered at that first convention and I have not missed one since! I am honored to be a nominee for Elementary Vice President and if elected, I will uphold the great legacy that TCDA offers choir directors from our great state! TCDA has blessed, encouraged and inspired me to be a better choir director, and it is my desire to increase the membership of the Elementary Division of TCDA so they too, can be encouraged and inspired. Thank you, TCDA Board, for all you have done for choral music in Texas.
CHURCH VP Derrick Bready is the head choral director at Pearland HS and previously taught at J. Frank Dobie HS in Pasadena ISD. At Dobie, Bready co-produced the Tommy Tune nominated musical “The www.TCDA.net
Sound of Music” and won a Tommy Tune award for Best Musical Direction and Best Orchestra. Since moving to Pearland in 2006, the choir program has experienced steady growth and success, consistently earning UIL sweepstakes, Superior awards, and Best in Class trophies. In February 2010, the PHS Men’s Choir presented a SWACDA conference performance in Denver, and performed at the 2011 TMEA convention; and the Pearland HS Chamber Choir (Varsity Mixed Choir) performed at the 2013 TMEA convention. The Chamber Choir again performed at the 2014 SWACDA conference. Bready graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a BME and holds a MM from the University of Houston.

From the time I began attending TCDA conventions as a college student to today as an educator and church musician, TCDA has been an organization known for excellence in music performance, professional and personal relationships, and the value of the choral art. Its ideals resonate in the rehearsal rooms across our state and “trickle down” in the music we share with our audiences. If elected, my goal will be to maintain the tradition of excellence that our leaders have blazed before us and to continue advocating the role of choral singing in our communities, schools, and places of worship. I will support the role of church music for every age group, style, and medium: from worship band to childrens’ music to handbells, toward the creative blend of liturgy, text, and music. Church musicians have an important task of creating an authentic and purposeful worship experience for all people. Through the TCDA model, all church musicians can advocate and support each other.
Dr. Aaron C. Hufty
is the Associate Pastor of Worship and Music at First Baptist Church of San Antonio. Prior to FBCSA, Hufty spent 15 years in the classroom, nine at Northside ISD at Coke Stevenson MS and Sandra Day O’Connor HS. While completing his DMA, Hufty directed the UT Women’s Chorus. Recently, he worked at Baylor University teaching Music Appreciation, Choral Conducting and Women’s Choir. He created the newest Baylor ensemble, VirtuOSO, a contemporary a cappella group. Outside the classroom, Hufty is devoted to the creation of a singing culture. He was a charter member of the San Antonio Chamber Choir, director of the Northside Elementary Honor Choir, San Antonio Opera Chorus, and the San Antonio Choral Society. He served two state ACDA honor groups (2012 Mississippi HS Conductor and 2013 Missouri Church/Community Conductor). Hufty earned a BS in vocal music from Northwest Missouri State University; a MM in conducting from the University of Texas at San Antonio; and a DMA in conducting from the University of Texas at Austin.

It is my desire to be not only an effective liaison to my full-time ministerial colleagues, but to also serve as a resource and encourager to all who serve churches in a music leadership role. We are aware how music unifies the Body in worship, and it is my desire to help others with the skills, literature, and resources to create the most meaningful worship experience possible.
Joshua Taylor is
the Director of Worship and Music at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Prior to FPC, Taylor was on the choral staff at Kansas State University and was Director of Music at Trinity Presbyterian Church and Director of Choirs at Navo Middle School in Denton. He led the FPC Chancel Choir and Chamber Choir in the First Concert Series including collaborations with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra. The choir’s CD entitled “Sounds of the Season: Advent and Christmas at First Presbyterian” was released in November 2013. Taylor presented sessions on the “Early Years of a Career in Church Music” for ACDA and a session on “Advent, Lent, and Ordinary Time, Oh My! Strategies for Advanced Planning in the Church” for TCDA. He has presented for SWACDA, the Kansas Music Educators Association and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. He serves as the Musician Columnist for the journal Call to Worship and was named the Metroplex Children’s Choir Teacher of the Year in 2010. He served a term on the Executive Board of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and will serve as the 2014 Mo-Ranch/PAM Worship & Music Conference Director. Taylor holds a BME from the University of North Texas and a MM in choral conducting from Kansas State University.

It is an honor to be nominated to represent the church division of TCDA. If elected, I will work to provide engaging clinicians, interesting sessions and guest speakers for the many church musicians that make up the membership of TCDA. Whether a bi-vocational church musician, a full-time veteran, or a student wanting to learn more, TCDA has an opportunity to support the full-range of experiences found in Texas churches and synagogues. As worship changes in the 21st century church, TCDA should be “front and center” as the organization providing an ecumenical bridge that honors the past and supports the best of choral music in the church that is still to come! I will strive to foster relationships and dialogue between our diverse members to ensure the continued excellence we have grown to expect from our organization. If elected, I will serve this organization, which has been so much a part of my career as a teacher and church musician, with my full creativity, imagination, and energy.

Welcome to the 2014 Convention I am looking forward to seeing our many returning members and meeting the new members who recently joined. We have over 100 new members this year, representing all regions of Texas, which is very exciting! TCDA is YOUR association. It is the members driving the goals of TCDA and guiding decisions on workshops, sessions, and events through feedback and suggestions. So, let me encourage you to become involved in TCDA. For example, many of our new members this year are serving as Clinicians, Conductors, and Accompanists, bringing their expertise to Convention. There is no better way to jump right in! We have over 60 Clinicians this year, a record number. Members can also volunteer for service on Committees, such as our huge Hospitality Committee of over 45 members. A Convention of this magnitude simply can’t be done without the help of our Committees, members and officers. Some members serve in various roles for years, and then decide to run for a Board position, bringing their expertise to an even higher level to benefit TCDA. We appreciate any and all that you do! TCDA needs your involvement to continue moving forward, so think of ways to participate. Talk with current Board members; believe me, they will welcome your questions and will have lots of suggestions for you. Have a great time at Convention. Relax, Rejuvenate, and Reenergize for the upcoming year. Thanks for coming.

All members of TCDA, TODA, and TBA are invited to sing in our first-ever performance of Mozart’s Requiem. Conductor Jerry McCoy will lead the sing-in (orchestra provided by TODA and TBA). Bring your own score. We suggest the G. Schirmer edition by Süssmayr (you may purchase a copy at convention). All members of TCDA, TODA, and TBA and their guests are welcome to hear this first-ever performance! Childcare Information and Guidelines Sun 10:00 am – 10:00 pm | Mon 7:30 am – 10:00 pm | Tues 7:30 am – 10:00 pm | Wed 8:00 am – 12:00 pm Childcare is complimentary to our members during the convention for children 12 years of age and younger. This convenient, on-site service is located in the Convention Center in rooms 209 and 211 (upstairs, rear of convention center).
Please read the suggestions below and come prepared to ensure a smooth process for your children: •
Plan to take strollers with you, as there is no extra space in the rooms.
•
No meals will be provided or served. Snacks of raisins, Cheerios, cookies, and punch are served mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If you do not wish your child to have these, you must include written instructions. Infants/ toddlers will be fed labeled/prepared bottles of milk or juice. Parents must pick up children for each meal and no other foods will be allowed in the room.

Please take children to the restroom prior to bringing them to childcare. Bring extra, labeled clothes for young children.
•

Allow sufficient time for registration and instructions. Have all instructions for caregivers in writing including feeding, infant sleep habits, bathroom training, etc. Include child’s name on everything—diaper bag, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, etc. Bring an adequate supply of disposable diapers and wipes (no cloth diapers). We ask that only one parent come into the room with the child. Older children and friends are asked to wait outside. Please list the sessions you will attend with room numbers. Naming the Convention Center will not be adequate, as we must be able to reach you in the event of an emergency.

We supply age-appropriate toys, games, videos, and books. Do not bring personal toys.
•
For the benefit of the entire group, children who are ill will not be admitted. Also, parents will be called to pick up children who repeatedly hit, bite, or are inconsolable for long periods.

Quiet times are from 1:15 pm to 3:30 pm and 8:30 pm until closing. No children will be admitted during these times, and all who are inside will rest quietly. No exceptions! Children may be picked up at any time.
•
Parents who do not pick up children by posted closing times will be charged $10 per each minute late per child.
We want you to feel comfortable leaving your children in our care. Abiding by these guidelines will make for a safe and happy experience.

If you haven’t yet heard of Dan Forrest, you will at this year’s TCDA convention! At the age of 36, Dan is becoming known as “a composer of substance” (Columbus Dispatch) with “superb choral writing . . . full of spine-tingling moments” (Salt Lake Tribune). He has composed many beautiful pieces of music, including Good Night, Dear Heart; You Are the Music; and most recently, Requiem for the Living. Dan was always the accompanist for choirs growing up, and attended a choral festival every year in high school that was led by a conductor with real musicianship and real choral technique. “It opened my eyes to what was possible with choirs, even though I was at the piano bench most of the time.” Dan will introduce a new commissioned piece at this year’s Convention, entitled Hymn of Creation. Dan explained that the piece is a new setting of Isaac Watts’ venerable text, I Sing The Mighty Power of God, and since the theme of the TCDA Worship Service this year is “Heaven and Earth Are Full of Your Glory” (a quote from the Sanctus movement of his Requiem for the Living), “all the music revolves around that theme—the duality of heaven and earth, and yet how both reveal God’s glory at every turn. It is a majestic, sweeping setting for SATB choir, piano/organ, brass quintet, and percussion, with much attention to painting the nuances of the Watts’ text.” This year’s Festival Chorus will also perform two movements of Requiem for the Living. I asked Dan

about his expectations for a group of church choir singers performing one of his most widely known works, and Dan replied, “I work with all kinds of choirs, from professional choirs of trained singers, to church choirs made up of volunteers who just love to make a joyful noise. With professional or trained groups, the focus is more on using the people to create music; with volunteer groups, sometimes the focus is on using the music for the sake of the people. Either way, I am glad for the music-making and the music-makers, and we make the very best music we’re capable of—so I am looking forward to working with the Texas choir.” Dan believes that choral singing is important for everyone, not just the highly talented. “Music, apart from all its secondary benefits, enriches, ennobles, and uplifts its performers and its listeners. Singing is an innately human thing to do—people of every culture sing! And choral singing is the ultimate music-making experience, as the whole choir strives for unity of breath and tone and color, for a unity of one voice, amidst the richness that the diversity of voices creates in a single voice.” In addition to the Worship Service, members have an opportunity to visit with Dan at a Meet the Composer session, and he will also participate in High School Student Leadership Day, offering students a rare glimpse into what it means to become a young composer (members welcome). performing groups The Ken Davis Chorale is composed of singers united together through the artistic direction and inspiration of Ken Davis. The kinship began in 1989 at Texas Tech University when Davis was Director of Choral Activities. For twelve years, the University Choir, under Davis’s direction, received The Ken Davis Chorale numerous invitations to perform at the Monday 4:00 pm TMEA Convention, the ACDA Convention, Lincoln Center, and to participate in a professional recording by Naxos Records. Twenty-two years after Davis’s appointment, former members of the University Choir now join together to renew their spirits and their song. The result is an inspiring choral ensemble dedicated to bringing beauty and moving accomplishments to the arts so desperately needed by a world in search of peace and harmony.
The Austin Handbell Ensemble Monday 6:00 pm
The mission of The Austin Handbell Ensemble is to exemplify excellence in handbell ringing and to promote musical education at all levels. Bob Avant, Director of the AHE since 1995, first rang a bell in the early 1980’s and soon assumed the role of director at First United Methodist Church followed by Central Presbyterian Church, and currently at First Baptist Church in Austin, where he has been handbell director since 1994. During his tenure, AHE has performed for area and national events and released four CD recordings. Fifteen members, five octaves of handbells, five and a half octaves of handchimes, coordinating tremendously and collaborating fiercely, to create the smoothest, most expressive musical experience possible, makes this a performance not to be missed.
The San Antonio Chamber Choir is an ensemble of professional voices dedicated to enriching the cultural life of South Texas through artistic performances of the finest choral music. Since creating the choir nine years ago, Scott MacPherson has molded the San Antonio Chamber Choir into the city’s premier professional ensemble. Beginning next season, the SACC will perform in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility as a part of the new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The Choir is saying farewell to Artistic Director MacPherson, who is stepping down this summer, and welcomes new Artistic Director Rick Bjella, who will join them in fall 2014.

Featuring Headliner Doreen Rao. Renowned Director and Composer Dr. Doreen Rao joins us as this year’s Elementary Honor Choir Conductor. Music Director and Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus in Buffalo, NY, Rao is also Interim Artistic Director for the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio for the 2014–15 season, following the retirement of Founder and Artistic Director Marguerite McCormick. Rao is known for her groundbreaking work in music education and celebrated for her spirited and moving concerts. Linking the standards of performance and education with the goals of diversity, inclusion and social responsibility, Rao’s seminal work teaching young people to sing inspired a generation of conductors and teachers to lead young choirs in schools and communities around the world. In this session, choral music educators will learn about Choral Master, the exciting new app that allows anyone to learn and practice choral music outside the rehearsal room! Individual vocal tracks are downloaded from the online library into the "free" Choral Master application, which can reside on a smart phone, tablet, or desktop computer. The app allows the user to change the volume of the voice track, as well as the other voices and piano accompaniment. See the music scrolling as it is being sung. Slow the recording down or loop it for extra help on the tough sections. Make a recording and email it to the director for assessment. This application is an effective tool for every choral program!

Reginaldo Carvalho (1932–2013) studied with Heitor Villa-Lobos, Paul Le Flem and Pierre Schaefer, and was one of the Brazilian pioneers on electro acoustic music in the 1960s. He worked as a music teacher, conductor and composer, and wrote various choral works. Much of his music is unknown to American conductors and choirs. This session will focus on his biography as well as on the analysis of his choral compositions, both sacred and secular. Discussion to focus on important aspects of his compositional style, present performance editions of his choral pieces, and performance practice issues, including Brazilian Portuguese diction.

Realizing that not every chosen selection will be appropriate for every TCDA member, the committee respectfully appreciates your understanding of the process. Suggestions for selections fitting the new music requirement are always welcome.

Dianne Brumley Dianne Brumley is the University of Texas at Brownsville Director Emeritus of Choral Studies. She was appointed in 2003 and was the first to hold the position of Director of Choral Studies. Brumley was the founding conductor of the acclaimed University Master Chorale and during her tenure at UTB, the Master Chorale was selected to perform at the 2011 TMEA Convention and also toured internationally. Brumley served for 20 years as the founding Conductor and Artistic Director of the South Texas Chorale and Festival Orchestra. She is a frequent guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout Texas and the U.S., and also works as a choral music education and conducting consultant. Brumley is a passionate advocate for music in public schools and universities and mentors numerous choral directors. Before UTB, she was a music teacher in public schools at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, and a public school fine arts administrator. Brumley holds a BME from Abilene Christian University and a MM from Texas State University.

Monte Garrett Dr. Garrett is a Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Howard Payne University. Career highlights include TMEA Region 7 Clinician in 2003; Texas Baptist All-State Youth Choirs in 2005 and 2009; commissioned works by Libby Larsen, David Ashley White, Robert Young, Robert Tucker, and others; the 2012 ACDA International Conductors Exchange Program; and the 2012 Vancouver Chamber Choir – National Conductors Symposium. Garrett earned a BME (church music), a MME (choral conducting) from Hardin-Simmons University, and a DMA (choral conducting) from the University of Texas.
Dr. Fulton is an Alumni Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University. He has conducted performances at Carnegie Hall in New York, Symphony Hall in Boston, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Mozarteum, and the Brucknerhaus in Austria. Prominent performances by his choirs include three national and seven divisional ACDA Conventions, a

Dr. Harness-Brumley is a two-time Texas All-State French horn player and a classically trained pianist. Brumley is currently working in the laboratory of Dr. Philip Thomas on rare cystic fibrosis folding mutations. She is the recipient of the T32 federal research training grant and the 2013 Will Rogers fellowship award. Other awards include poster and oral presentations at the 2013 North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference. Brumley attended college at Brown University majoring in Egyptology and Biology, and then medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas. She completed her internal medicine residency, chief medicine resident year, and is finishing her pulmonary/critical care fellowship as the chief pulmonary fellow also at UTSW.

Dr. Guess currently teaches voice and coaches singers in his private studio and at various secondary schools in the Waco area. He also directs the Central Texas Choral Society, which has given performances of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (with the Baylor University School of Music), Rutter’s Gloria, and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Guess served as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and has been on the adjunct faculty at the Baylor University School of Music. He has taught at the secondary level and served in various church music positions. Guess holds a MME from the University of Oklahoma and a DMA from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Hawthorne retired in 2007 as Director of Choral Activities at Hardin-Simmons University after 33 years. His tenure includes five years as dean of the School of Music. His choirs have performed for TMEA, Southwest Division of ACDA and regional and national conventions of MENC. Hawthorne continues to be a sought-after clinician throughout the state of Texas and beyond. He is a member of ACDA, TMEA and TCDA, and a past president of TCDA as well as a 2009 recipient of the TCDA Choral Excellence Award. Hawthorne earned a BS in music from Lamar University, a MM (theory and literature) from Baylor, and a DMA (choral conducting) from the University of Texas at Austin.

Kathy Price Dr. Price is the Assistant Professor of Voice at Westminster Choir College at Rider University. She teaches graduate vocal pedagogy courses and applied voice lessons and directs the Presser Voice Lab. She taught at Mississippi State, the University of Kansas, Northern Virginia Community College, and William Jewell College. Price has performed as soloist at The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, National Museum for Women in the Arts, and The White House. She earned a B.A. from the University of Richmond, a MM from the University of Maryland, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Nagoski is currently Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music at Western New England University, Springfield MA, and specializes in conducting as embodied cognition. After completing her BME degree, Nagoski taught high school and middle school choral and general music. An active clinician and adjudicator, she has presented sessions on topics related to embodied cognition for conductors and teachers at state, regional, and national music conferences. Nagoski holds a BME from the University of Delaware, a DMA (conducting) from the University of Connecticut, and a MM (choral conducting) from Westminster Choir College.
Gary Packwood
Dr. Packwood is currently Program Administrator and Director of Choral Activities at Mississippi State University. He has conducted ensembles for regional conferences of ACDA and state conferences of NAfME in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2012 with the New England Conservatory Chamber Orchestra and the MSU singers. He was president-elect of the Alabama Choral Director’s Association and in 2012 was a candidate for president-elect for the Southern Division of ACDA. Packwood earned a BME (vocal) from Southeastern Louisiana University, a MA (music/ conducting) from Florida Atlantic University, and a DMA (choral conducting and music education) from Louisiana State University.

Dennis Shrock For four years, Dr. Shrock has served as the Director of Choral Activities at Texas Christian University. He was formerly the Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Shrock is Author of Choral Repertoire and Choral Scores; Performance Practices in the Baroque Era; Performance Practices in the Classical Era; and Handel’s Messiah, A Performance Practice Handbook. He holds a BME from Westminster Choir College and MM and DM degrees from Indiana University.
Michelle Roueché Dr. Roueché is the Director of Choral Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Equally accomplished at the piano and the conductor’s podium, her choirs have been invited to perform for Georgia MEA conventions, two Southern ACDA conventions, and most recently the 2014 SWACDA convention. Represented by Walton Music and Treble Clef Music, her compositions for women’s choirs have been featured at various ACDA and All-State conventions. Roueché earned a BME (piano performance and accompanying) from Texas Tech University, a MM (vocal coaching and accompanying) from University of Illinois, and a DMA (choral conducting) from Arizona State University.

Dr. Seighman is currently Director of Choral Activities at Trinity University. He oversees a comprehensive choral music program and teaches courses in conducting and music
Vladimir Silva Dr. Silva is the Associate Professor at Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. He has been conductor for several vocal/ instrumental groups and served as conductor and tenor soloist in Argentina, France, Italy, Austria and the U.S. He has collaborated with colleges and universities in Brazil and abroad, and is published in the Choral Journal, Per Musi, Música Hodie, ICTUS, and OPUS. As a composer Silva has written for children’s and mixed choruses. TAMUC Concert Chorale and UCO Concert Chorale have premiered some of his works. Silva is a member of the Council of Arts and Culture of Paraiba State and was Director of the Campina Grande International Music Festival. He earned a music degree at the Universidade Federal da Paraiba, a MMA (conducting) at the Universidad Federal da Bahia, and a DMA (choral conducting) at Louisiana State University.

Ahrens is the Choir Director at Vines HS in Plano ISD. He is in his 9th year of teaching, the last five spent at Vines HS. Ahrens was recently named Vines HS Teacher of the Year and also received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Plano ISD. He currently serves as the Region 25 Vocal Division Chair, and is an active clinician and adjudicator. The Vines Chorale Women were honored to perform at the 2014 TMEA Convention. Ahrens also serves as the Youth Choir Director and Tenor Section Leader at Transfiguration Episcopal Church in Dallas. He received his BME and MM degrees (choral conducting) from Texas Christian University.
Allibon is currently Head Director at Birdville HS in Birdville ISD. Her choirs have performed at TMEA conventions four times (1996, 2000, 2008, 2014) and at the National ACDA convention (2001). Allibon has conducted four All-State choirs and middle school and high school regional choirs throughout Texas, Arkansas and Nebraska. She served as President of TCDA from 2009-2011. Allibon was the recipient of the 2001 Texas Tech Distinguished Music Educator Award, the 2002 Haltom HS Teacher of the Year Award, the 2003 Joseph Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award, and the 2008 Bayard Friedman Hero Award. Sarah Council is the Associate Director of the Plano West Senior HS Choirs. She previously held the position of Director of Choirs at Shepton HS. Council’s choirs have received many honors, including a 2011 TMEA Invited Performing Choir and consistent UIL sweepstakes awards. Council is a member of TCDA, TMEA, TMAA and ACDA. She received a BME from Baylor University.

Kimberley Ahrens In her seventh year as choral director at Robinson MS in Plano ISD, Ahrens was the recipient of the 2014 Robinson MS Teacher of the Year Award and the 2009 TCDA Distinguished Young Director Award. The Robinson MS Varsity Treble Choir was selected to perform at the 2013 TMEA Convention, and the Varsity Mixed Choir performed at the 2014 MS/JH National Choral Conference. An active clinician and adjudicator, Ahrens’ professional affiliations include TMEA, TCDA and ACDA. She received her BME degree from Texas Christian University.

Doug Council Doug Council is the Director of Choirs at Berkner HS in Richardson. His choirs have enjoyed consistent sweepstakes awards at UIL Concert and sight-reading competitions, as well Outstanding and Best in Class recognitions. He has collaborated on Masterworks concerts with the Orchestra Department, and placed over 20 students in the TMEA All-State Choirs. Council has worked as Chorus Master for five musicals, receiving nominations twice for Best Music and Best Ensemble from the DSM High School Musical Awards. He is a member of TCDA, TMEA and ACDA. Council received a BME degree from the University of North Texas.
Dean is Head Director at Euless Trinity HS. While maintaining superior ratings at UIL competitions, his choirs have been awarded Best in Class at area festivals and performed with the King’s Singers in the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center and Chanticleer in the Fort Worth Bass Hall. In both 2004 and 2012, Dean’s A cappella choir sang at the TMEA convention as one of the 5A invited choirs. In 2009 the A cappella choir was chosen the National Mixed Choir winner for the Mark of Excellence Choral Honors Project. Dean was named Teacher of the Year at Hurst JH in 1998 and at Trinity HS in 2007. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Score a Goal in the Classroom’s “Outstanding Choral Music Educator Hero” award. Dean earned BME and MM (choral conducting) degrees from Baylor University.

Menger is serving as a Lecturer and Conductor at Baylor University. Along with ensembles, Menger teaches beginning conducting and directs three of the School of Music’s choral groups: Women’s Choir, Chamber Singers and VirtuOSO. Prior to Baylor, Menger served 18 years as choral director at Arlington High School. She currently serves as the TMEA Vocal Vice President and as President of TMAA. Ensembles under her direction have performed at national ACDA conventions, TMEA conventions and at Carnegie Hall. Menger holds a BFA from the University of Arizona and is pursuing a MM degree in choral conducting from Texas State University.
Jeff Rice is the Director of Choirs at Midway ISD and Head Choral Director at Midway HS. Rice previously taught in LaPorte, Cypress-Fairbanks and the San Angelo school districts. At MHS, he conducts the Chamber Singers, Meistersingers, Varsity Men’s Choir, and JV Select Men’s Choir. His choirs have received multiple UIL Sweepstakes Awards and Outstanding Performance Awards at festivals and competitions. In March 2012, the MHS Chamber Singers were named Runner-Up at the American Classics Madrigal Festival in San Antonio. Cheryl Wilson Wilson is currently the Head Choral Director at Garland HS. Her teaching includes elementary, middle school and high school in Garland and Klein school districts. In 1993, her A cappella choir was selected as a TMEA Performing Choir. She received this honor again at Garland High when the A cappella women were selected in 2003 and the A cappella choir in 2006. Barrick is Head Choir Director at Union Grove MS and also serves on the staff of the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor Conservatory of Music. She has taught at the elementary, middle school and high school levels since 1995, and her choirs have consistently earned UIL sweepstakes ratings. Barrick is an active clinician and adjudicator and served four years as MS Vocal Coordinator for TMEA Region VIII. She is a member of TCDA, TMEA and ACDA, and earned a BME from the University of North Dakota.
Bull’s current position includes stay at home mom, private voice teacher, clinician, adjudicator and consultant. With eleven years’ experience at middle school and high school levels, Bull has been a panelist, contributor and conductor for workshops at TMEA and TCDA Conventions. Under her direction, the Cook MS Advanced Girls Choir performed at TMEA in 2010, and Bull has presented professional development workshops for several school districts. She currently serves on the UIL PML Committee and is an adjudicator and clinician for All-State Camps, UIL Contests, Solo and Ensemble Contests and Regional Choirs for MS and HS. Bull earned a BME from Louisiana State University.
Garcia is Head Director at Arnold MS in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. The Arnold Varsity Men’s Choir was an Invited Choir at the 2014 TMEA Convention. Tammy Benton Benton is the Choral Director at Midway MS. Her choirs have performed at the ACDA national convention and at TMEA conventions. Benton is an active clinician and adjudicator and has presented workshops and clinics on Teaching Boys Choirs, Sight-Reading and Rehearsal Techniques, and published articles in Texas Sings! and Southwestern Musician. Connie Horton Jennifer Carter Carter is the Choral Director at Parkhill JH in Richardson ISD. She has 27 years of MS choral music experience, and her choirs have consistently earned first division and sweepstakes awards at UIL competitions and Best in Class at area festivals. The Parkhill Tenor Bass Choir performed for the inaugural MS/ JH National Choral Conference in Dallas in 2012. Carter has been a member of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, a private voice instructor, director of church children’s choirs, and an administrator for a church school of the arts. She is a member of TCDA, TMEA and ACDA. Carter earned a BA (vocal performance and secondary choral education) and MA degrees from West Texas A & M University.

Huston’s choirs have consistently been awarded sweepstakes at UIL competitions as well as Best in Class and Best in Show at regional festivals. Her students have represented the NSMS Choir as members of the Region XIX JH Choir and the MS/JH Honor Choir of TCDA. Huston serves as Region Organizer and Treasurer for Region XIX JH Choir. She has co-presented sessions at TMEA in 2003 and 2010 and is a frequent adjudicator and clinician. Huston is a member of TCDA, TMEA, TMAA and Mu Phi Epsilon. She earned a BME from Texas State University and is pursuing a master’s in educational leadership at Lamar University.
Moses has been a music educator for 28 years, and currently teaches grades three through eight at The John Cooper School in The Woodlands. She also serves in music ministry at Grade Presbyterian and is the director of Summer Stock musicals for Class Act Productions of The Woodlands. Moses served TCDA as Elementary VP from 2006-2008 and is a frequent clinician and adjudicator. She has presented sessions on behalf of Warner Brothers Music, BriLee Music and Carl Fischer Music. Moses earned degrees in Vocal and Instrumental Music Education from LSU and the University of North Texas.
Phillips is currently Choir Director at Wayside MS in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. Phillips’ choirs and individual students consistently perform at an exemplary level in state and local competitions. Her colleagues honored her with a Birdville ISD Golden Apple Award and a Touch of Class Award. Phillips served Region V as the JH/MS Region Secretary and Region Chair, and was a Region V UIL contest chair for ten years. She is past Secretary/Treasurer of TCDA, a member of TCDA, TMEA, TMAA, ACDA, PTA and Mu Phi Epsilon. She received her BME from Texas Christian University.
Carisa Niemeyer
Michael Madrid Madrid is Director of Music at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. He is responsible for the music liturgy and six choral ensembles at SJV. The Sanctuary choir recently traveled to Italy and was invited to sing Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Madrid was Director of Choral Activities at Mayde Creek HS for eleven years, and his choirs earned sweepstakes and top honors annually. He continues to be a clinician, adjudicator, and choreographer throughout the state. Madrid earned a BME and an MM (choral conducting) at Texas Tech University.

Niemeyer is the Head Choral Director at Forest Meadow JH in Richardson ISD. In addition to directing choirs, Niemeyer works with colleagues and choirs throughout the Lake Highlands area. She is Student Council sponsor, Fine Arts Department Chair, a member of the Instructional Leadership Team, and was selected as FMJH PTA’s Teacher of Excellence for the 2012-13 year. Niemeyer was recently named contributing author for the latest Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill choral textbook. She holds a BBA in Finance and a BA in Music from Texas Tech University.
Robert Phillips Phillips is the first choir director at Clear Springs HS in League City. He also serves as the Fine Arts Department Chair and teaches AP Music Theory. Prior to Clear Springs, Phillips taught at Clear Lake HS in Houston, J. Frank Dobie HS in Pasadena, and at Apollo JH in Richardson. He produced and conducted Clear Springs’ recent production of Urinetown, which won nine Tommy Tune Awards, including Best Musical in the greater Houston area. Phillips holds degrees from Southwestern University and the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Theresa Whatley
Price is Head Choral Director at Westwood JH in Richardson ISD where he directs the varsity choirs and serves as head of the music department. The Westwood Chorale Girls received the honor of performing for TMEA in 2007. Price served as TCDA MS/JH VP from 2005-2007, and served a three-year term as a member and committee chair of the UIL Prescribed Music List Vocal Committee. He is in demand as a clinician/conductor for All-State, All-Region, and All-City choirs, as an adjudicator for UIL Concert and Sight-reading contests, and a judge for Solo and Ensemble contests in the DFW area. He is a member of TCDA, TMEA and TMAA, and received BME degrees (music education and vocal performance) from SMU.
Brian Smith is the Network Administrator in Friendswood ISD. He has directed JH choir in public schools and adult church choir. A passion for technology led Brian to leave the classroom to become a full-time technology administrator in Friendswood ISD. He received a BME degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music.
Whatley is the Choir Director at the Austin Academy for Excellence in Garland ISD. Her choirs consistently are sweepstakes winners at UIL and were chosen as Best in Class at the Hawaiian Falls Choral Festival in Garland. Her A cappella Mixed Choir was chosen Grand Champions at the same festival in 2013. In 2011 and 2013 the Austin Academy A cappella Choir was invited to perform at Fine Arts Day at the Capitol by the Texas Coalition for Quality Arts Education. Whatley is a member of TCDA and TMEA, a frequent clinician, adjudicator, and in-service presenter. She earned a BS in Music Education from Texas A&M-Commerce.

Tescille Riser Riser is a product of Texas choral music education and has taught 19 years in the Houston area, currently at Krimmel Intermediate School in Klein ISD teaching grades six through eight. In 2009 Riser was selected Krimmel Teacher of the Year and Klein ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. She is a member of TCDA, TMEA and TMAA, and received a BME from East Texas Baptist University.

Melissa Smith is Head Director of the Clear Creek Intermediate Choirs in Clear Creek ISD. For ten years Smith was the director of the Friendswood JH Choirs in Friendswood ISD, growing the program from 75 students to over 300. In 2010 Smith brought her Varsity Treble Choir to TMEA, and the same year, she was voted FJH Teacher of the Year and Secondary District Teacher of the Year. Smith is a member of TCDA, TMEA and TMAA and an invited clinician and adjudicator for Region Choirs and UIL contests across the state. She received a BME (choral/vocal) from the University of Houston Moores School of Music.
Zentner is Director of Choirs at Running Brushy MS. Since Zentner began teaching, her choirs have earned consecutive sweepstakes at UIL and consistently superior ratings, including Best in Class and Grand Champion trophies at Texas festivals. Zentner is an active clinician in Leander ISD and Round Rock ISD, focusing on student leadership and accountability, full choir engagement, and technology integration in the choral classroom. She earned a BA (music education) and a MM (vocal performance) from Texas State University.

Andy Beck
Gwozdz is the Director of Music for the Diocese and Cathedral of Corpus Christi. With over 40 years experience, Gwozdz is in high demand as a festival conductor and workshop clinician. His workshop presentations, primarily in the area of children’s choirs, have taken place in over 200 cities throughout the U.S. In summer of 2013 he conducted an International Choir gathering in Washington, D.C. including a performance in front of the White House prior to the July 4th parade. Gwozdz earned a BME from Texas Christian University.
Alisha Gabriel
Beck is currently Director of School Choral, Classroom and Vocal Publications of Alfred Music. He was formerly the Vocal Music Director at Johnson City HS in New York State. A successful composer and arranger, Beck has authored several top-selling choral and children’s musicals for Alfred Music, and co-written the highly regarded method book Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight-Singing. Beck is a frequent guest conductor, choreographer, and clinician for music educators and students throughout the country. He received a BA (music education) from Ithaca College and a MA (music education) from Northwest Missouri State University.
Gabriel has been teaching since 1998 and is currently an Elementary Music Specialist at Great Oaks Elementary in Round Rock ISD. She has presented sessions for TMEA, KET and Round Rock ISD, and taught Elementary Music Methods at Southwestern University in Georgetown. Gabriel was a guest clinician for Georgetown ISD’s Elementary Choir Festival in 2012. She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education from Texas State University.

Jo Lynn Cookus Cookus is an Elementary Music Teacher at Frank Elementary in Klein ISD. Before she taught music, Cookus spent seven years as a band director at the high school and junior high levels, and her bands were awarded top ratings at UIL and various festivals. Her music teaching includes Anderson Elementary, Wilson Intermediate School in Klein ISD at Greenwood Forest Elementary and currently Frank Elementary. Gruener is the Counselor and Character Coach at Westwood-Bales, a National School of Character in Friendswood. Her experience includes 30 years of teaching, 13 in her current position. In 2007, the school was named the inaugural Texas State School of Character and in 2009 it earned the distinction of National School of Character. Gruener earned a BS (English and Spanish) from the University of Wisconsin, and MS degrees (education and counseling) from the University of Houston.
Johns is a K-5th Grade Music Teacher at Floresville South Elementary. She has presented various folk dance and singing games workshops in Round Rock, Hays CISD, and San Antonio, and she presented at TMEA in 2010. She was named Floresville South Elementary Teacher of the Year and the ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2011. Johns serves as co-coordinator for the Kodaly Certification Program at Texas State (2013-present). She was the Kodaly Educators of Texas VP in 2002-2011, and currently serves as President. Johns received a BMA from Stephen F. Austin State University and a MMA from Texas State University.

Norm Sands
King is a retired music specialist and administrator, having served 31 years in education. King worked in Conroe, Killeen and Plano, and has been a presenter for numerous district professional learning sessions, including Kodaly training programs. She served on the TEKS Revision Committee for Music 6-8 and continues to mentor teachers around the state. King served TCDA as Elementary VP, and is a frequent TCDA, TMEA, OAKE and AOSA invited clinician. She received her BME and MA degrees from Sam Houston State University.
Sands is a Music Specialist and Campus Technologist at La Joya ISD. He was named Teacher of the year at Flores Elementary in 2004, and again at Tabasco Elementary at La Joya ISD in 2009. He received a Citation of Excellence from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association in 1992. In Bellefonte, PA he was named Outstanding Young Educator by the Area Jaycees in 1991; and he was the Outstanding Contributor to Education at Bellefonte Elementary School in 1989. Sands earned a BS in music education from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in Educational Technology Leadership from Lamar University.

Meredith Mooney Mooney is joining Dr. James “Red” Duke Elementary in Alvin ISD slated to open this Fall. Formerly at E.C. Mason Elementary School in Alvin, Mooney has taught K-5 music in Spring, Pearland and Alvin school districts. Her E.C. Mason Encore Choir and Orff Ensemble, a non-auditioned group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, performs in community and area festivals. In 2013, Mooney received an Alvin ISD Education Foundation grant for innovative teaching. She earned a BM (applied music) from the University of Houston.

Lauren Summa Summa has been an educator for 15 years, and is currently Lead Music Teacher at Melba Passmore Elementary in Alvin ISD. In 2008 Summa was chosen Campus Teacher of the Year and was honored as Alvin ISD’s Elementary Teacher of the Year. She has earned more than $40,000 in grants for her students. Summa earned a BME from Texas Christian University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching with Internet Technologies from the Graduate Center of Marlboro College.
Dr. Devine serves as music minister at Foundry United Methodist Church. She taught at Groves JH in Port Neches, at Houston’s Kinkaid School, and at Houston Community College. She has pit-conducted for church and community college musicals and was assistant conductor for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s annual operas. She is conductor of The Houston Choral Society and took the choir on four European tours where she conducted in major cathedrals. Devine served as TCDA’s VP of Church/Community, and on ACDA’s SW Division Board. A clinician and adjudicator, Devine received a BM in music education from Texas Tech, a MM (music history) from The University of Houston, and a DMA (choral conducting) from The University of Texas.

McBeth is Director of Music at Manchester United Methodist Church in St. Louis, where he serves as administrator for 18 choral and handbell ensembles and conducts the Chancel Choir. He also serves as Associate Conductor for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. McBeth has made appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Avery Fischer Hall, and his choirs have performed at state and division ACDA conventions. His credits include performances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Civic Symphony, the Cedar Rapids Symphony and the New England Symphonic Ensemble. He is a graduate of Houston Baptist University and has done graduate studies in choral conducting at the University of Houston.
Dr. Sanchez-Bushong is currently Director of Worship and Music at Westlake United Methodist Church in Austin. She has worked at every level of the church in music and worship ministry for over 30 years, and last summer took her adult choir to Italy to sing at St. Peter’s Basilica. Sanchez-Bushong worked on producing The United Methodist Hymnal, The Book of Worship and other worship resources for UMC. She holds a BME and a DMA (choral conducting) from The University of Texas at Austin; and an MM (sacred music) from SMU.
Dr. Wright serves as Director of Choral Activities and the Logsdon Professor of Church Music at Hardin-Simmons University. In fulltime church work for 12 years, Wright oversaw large programs of graded choirs, multiple youth and adult choirs, and instrumental programs. Since coming to HSU, he has taught courses in church music practice, philosophy and history as well as conducting and choral literature. He oversees the choral program of the university and conducts the Concert Choir. Wright stays busy as a clinician and lecturer in music and worship. He holds a BM (church music) from Samford University, a MM (church music/choral conducting) from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminar, and a DMA (choral conducting) from the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri at Kansas City.
