From TCDA President, Thomas Rinn
Following our business meeting at TMEA, I’ve been approached by numerous members stating “Wow, there is a lot going on with TCDA.” We are glad you’ve noticed! From the planning of the summer convention, the organizing of the Winter Conference, making plans for five High School Student Leadership days, opening auditions for TWO choirs at our summer convention, working to establish several new scholarships and announcing new initiatives including the 2021 Directors Chorus tour to Central Europe, we have indeed been busy. We did all of this while launching a new membership system and website. Part of our administrative work has been to update the bylaws of our organization to both better represent our current organization and provide for flexibility as we evolve. This is an important step in the business of TCDA and will require an electronic vote of the membership. The proposed bylaw changes are available to review on our website. There are several upcoming deadlines you’ll want to note: • Registration and Housing for Summer Convention is open. Please see our website for changes to tried and proven reading packets. You will select these during registration. Register by July 1 to ensure you get the music that you want! • Two Auditioned Choirs, the MS/JS All-State Choir and the Elementary Honor Choir, will perform in the Lila Cockrell Theatre at the summer convention. We have extended the audition deadline to April 12 due to the C virus situation. • Scholarship applications for professionals, college students, and high school students are due by March 31. • Cast your vote for the open positions on the TCDA board. Voting opens on-line on May 1. • Nominate your colleagues for a TCDA award by the May 15 deadline. New Initiatives The TCDA 2021 Directors Chorus tour to Central Europe is getting lots of positive attention. Please see our website for complete details. Registration opens on May 1 and we expect that it will fill very fast. Make your plans to join us now! We are excited to announce the Emily Crocker Emerging Composer Composition Contest in partnership with Emily Crocker and Hal Leonard. Details can be found on our website. Entries are due by December 31, 2020. A cash prize will be awarded in 2021 and the composition featured at the summer convention. As you work through the busy spring semester, keep TCDA in your planning. Join us at convention, bring your students to a High School Leadership day, and consider one of the many scholarship and award opportunities available. Dr. Carolyn Cruse is Associate Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music Education at Texas Tech University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and conducts the TTU Women’s Chorale. Prior to her appointment at Texas Tech, Carolyn taught choral music for nine years at the junior high and high school levels in Richardson and Plano ISDs. She frequently serves as a clinician and conductor-adjudicator and has been invited to conduct Regional and All-State Honor Choirs and present workshops throughout the U.S., Finland, and Canada. In addition, the TTU Women’s Chorale performed for the 2012 SWACDA Convention in the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Carolyn is a contributing author for the choral textbook, “Voices in Concert,” and Volumes 4 and 5 of the GIA series, “Teaching Musicianship Through Performance in Choir.” Carolyn holds a BM from the University of North Texas, a MM degree in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, and a PhD in Music Education from Michigan State University.
Jason Dove is in his 22nd year of teaching and his 5th year at Deer Park High School. He graduated with honors from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Recently he completed his Master’s Degree in Music at Southern Methodist University. Prior to his time at Deer Park, Jason’s choirs sang at the TMEA convention and the ACDA National Conference. Jason has presented sessions at TMEA and OAKE on Kodály practices in the choral rehearsal and has previously presented at TCDA. He has presented inservices for various school districts from the Valley to DFW as well as the Houston area. He has also served as a high school and middle school Region clinician. Jason has previously served as the High School Vice President of TCDA. He also served as a Region Officer in TMEA for over a decade. Jason holds memberships in TCDA, TMEA, TMAA, ACDA and OAKE.
Jennifer Gallagher is in her 12th year of teaching and 4th year at Shadow Creek High School in Alvin ISD. She was previously the inaugural director at Nolan Ryan Junior High for eight years. A University of Houston graduate, Jennifer was the campus “Teacher of the Year” and went on to become the Secondary “Teacher of the Year” for Alvin ISD. She is a recipient of a “Young Director of Distinction” Award from TCDA and a state finalist for an HEB “Excellence in Education” award. Jennifer’s service includes TCDA MS/JH Vice President, Region 17 MS/ JH vocal coordinator, the current Region 17 Vocal Chair, and two-time Texas All-State section leader. Jennifer is an active clinician and TMAA adjudicator, and currently serves on the UIL PML committee. Jennifer’s students have had invitational performances with the Bay Area Chorus (2011), Houston Chamber Choir (2016), University of Houston Moores School of Music (2018), and Cantare Houston (2020). Her current projects include a book, collaborating with Denise Eaton and Sally Schott on choir director organization, entitled, “Rhythm of Life: Adjust Your Tempo & Maximize Productivity”, to be published with Carl Fischer.
If elected…
TCDA has been an important part of my life and my career. This organization has helped to mold and shape my conducting-teaching through continued education and professional development. TCDA has also been integral in fostering connections that have influenced me as a musician, teacher, and human being. If elected, it would be an honor to serve this organization, to work and learn alongside the TCDA board and entire membership to remain on our path toward further strengthening the mission and purpose of TCDA as our membership’s needs continue to evolve. As a former public school choral director and current preservice music educator, I have a unique perspective on the past, present, and future possibilities of TCDA. I would advocate that we explore avenues of choral music beyond the written page, include multiple genres of performance, and inspire fresh ideas and innovative strategies for choral directors in all contexts. This includes topics related to teaching in urban and rural settings, serving our LGBTQIA student and adult singers; and motivating students toward life-long “musicking,” so that they become our future patrons of choral music education. I would strive to continue TCDA’s mission of building and nurturing relationships among conductor-teachers as we work together “to instill a love of music” in our schools, communities, and churches.
If elected…
I have great memories in my early career of singing with colleagues and friends at the TCDA convention. This was the only source for new music other than driving to Pepper or Penders in the DFW area. Oh how times have changed! With recordings and scores readily available and accessible to anyone at any time, TCDA must continue to innovate. We can continue to serve the needs of our members through workshops and reading sessions, but we must seek input from our members on what helps to keep TCDA relevant to their career development and impact learning in their choral classroom. TCDA has been evolving by offering expanded High School Student Days and adding a Winter Conference. TCDA must also keep tradition alive. Each year we recognize outstanding young teachers as well as veterans who have made a lasting impact as educators and mentors. These moments are priceless reminders of servant leadership to our profession. We must continually remind ourselves of the joy that music brings to all of us. It is an honor to be considered and among the candidates for President of TCDA. I look forward to the opportunity of serving the organization in this capacity.

If elected…
Life is beautiful and hard, and always better together. As President, my vision would be to honor authenticity, diversity, and vulnerability by working to extend the table. We can extend invitations for presentations to directors who have never been asked before. We can work to create new committees and new convention service opportunities so more can feel a sense of purpose and belonging. We can extend grace to ourselves by practicing vulnerability and showing others they are not alone in their journey. Let’s dare to be diverse! We are complex human beings —we can simultaneously celebrate our greatness while also taking a hard look at what needs to be improved. TCDA has given me a multitude of ideas and friendships. We need to look at what it is NOT giving certain educators and then figure out how we can reach those teachers where they are. I am not afraid of tough conversations as we strive to move with boldness into the future. Serving TCDA has given me joy, purpose, and immeasurable connections with others. My mission is for TCDA to help you find your tribe. There are more chairs at the TCDA table! Pull up a seat. I am listening.

After completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Texas Tech University, Julie Boettiger promptly completed the OAKE Endorsed Kodály Certification at the University of North Texas. Her teaching career has been centered on elementary music in the West Houston area, where she has taught for sixteen musical years. While working in Fort Bend ISD, Julie completed her Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Houston. As a music specialist and as the Elementary Music Facilitator, she spends each day working with the teachers and students in her school district.
Ms. Reyes is a graduate of UTA with a degree in Music Education. She has taught music in public education for 14 years, currently teaching Elementary Music at Shady Grove Elementary in Keller ISD. She runs an after school choral program with over 120 students. The Stars Choir regularly performs at Six Flags for Holiday in the Park and always receives Superior ratings at the NRH20 Music Festival. Ms. Reyes was honored to be recognized as the Teacher of the Year in 2015.Ms. Reyes has served as the Lead Elementary Music teacher in KISD for the past five years and has coordinated the Keller ISD 4th Grade Honor Choir. She also frequently leads and plans Professional Developments for the district.The Keller ISD 5th and 6th grade Honor Choir performed at the TMEA convention in 2017. Prior to teaching in Keller, Ms. Reyes taught middle school choir in Mesquite ISD and HEB ISD for five years. Her choirs regularly received superior ratings at UIL Contest and superior ratings at other Music Festivals. Ms. Reyes has been the Minister of Music at St. Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 15 years. She serves on the Worship Committee and is an ordained Elder.
Vicky Suarez is an Elementary Music Specialist at Shepard Elementary in Plano ISD, where she teaches music in grades K-5 and leads a choir of 4th and 5th graders. Prior to this year, she taught K-6 music in Richardson ISD for nine years and in Arlington ISD from 1989 to 1996. Vicky has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Arlington (1989) and a Master of Music from Southern Methodist University (2017). She also has Level 3 Orff Certification and SongWorks Certification. She is on the faculty of the SongWorks Certification Courses which are offered at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls each July. Vicky has presented at TMEA three times, most recently in 2020, with a session titled “What’s in a Song? Everything You Need!” Her article “Vitality: Reviving the Life in Your Teaching,” co-authored with Dr. Peggy Bennett, was published in the August 2016 Southwestern Musician, and has been reprinted in several other music education journals around the country. Her professional affiliations include Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Delta Kappa, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, American Orff Schulwerk Association, and Organization of American Kodály Educators. She served as the SongWorks Educators Association President for 2019-20 and plays 2nd flute in the New Texas Symphony Orchestra, the community orchestra of the city of Dallas.

If elected, I want to help the elementary music teachers of Texas teach music by continuing my work on a statewide level. From the beginning of my career, I have said “I want to help teachers teach.” I have had the privilege to teach professional development sessions in topics including: Best Practices for the Elementary Music Classrooms, Grant Writing, Music Workstations, and Classroom Management. I have written curriculum and created a Curriculum Resource Binder for my district’s teachers to use. Also, in my current role as Elementary Music Facilitator, I serve our fifty-four teachers by creating opportunities for learning walks, continued professional development, and a buddy teacher support program. Through my tenure, we have added the Fort Bend ISD Kodály Institute where I serve as the Coordinator and as an Instructor. The impact of this program has affected over 50,000 students in its two short years. I work with a tireless dedication and my love for music education as my fuel. I will work for our division as a servant leader and continue my path as a life-long learner. I want to showcase your hard work. I want to share the good things you are doing in your classrooms and support your needs with opportunities for assistance and continued education. Let’s work together to show how we will change what the future of music looks like, beginning with our elementary music classrooms.

Ms. Reyes would be honored to serve on the board of TCDA. Elementary and Choral music are the passions that drive her. Her desire is to not only inspire others, but to learn from others in Music Education. Ms. Reyes would plan sessions based around the current needs of Elementary Music Teachers. Her ideas include how to run sound systems and lights, choosing and coordinating musicals, how to integrate Kodaly/Orff/Music Learning Theory/Laban into classrooms, and moving beyond the basics in Ukulele and Recorder. She would also love to bring in popular online Music Education stars that so many follow on social media. Ms. Reyes would enjoy sharing how to build everything from an after-school music program to creating an all-district choir. Something Ms. Reyes is passionate about addressing is teacher burn out. She has a heart for new teachers and would love to give focus to a better mentorship program for first and secondyear Elementary Teachers. Ms. Reyes would be a Vice President who isn’t afraid to reach out and ask questions. She plans on sending out surveys to see what current TCDA members’ needs are and how best she could serve them.

As Elementary Division Vice President, my goal will be to highlight the importance of singing and song in the elementary music classroom. I would also like to see TCDA actively promote inclusion and diversity as an organization, helping our teachers meet the needs of all students. I love teaching music, and I love helping music teachers keep the vitality in their teaching. Coming to the TCDA convention can re-ignite that passion. I would bring presenters and sessions that directly speak to current needs of elementary music teachers. I would be honored to serve you as Elementary Vice President.

Dr. Jeff Goolsby is Director of Choral Activities at Abilene Christian University, where he conducts the A Cappella Chorus and University Chorale. He teaches courses in choral conducting and choral methods and supervises choral music student teachers. A product of the Texas choral music system, he led successful high school programs in the Dallas and Houston areas for ten years. Choirs under his direction have performed in notable venues in the United States and abroad. He is in demand as a clinician, consultant, and adjudicator throughout the state and has served in numerous regional and state capacities with TMEA, ACDA, and UIL. He serves as Parish Choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. He holds degrees from Abilene Christian University; Louisiana State University, where he studied with Dr. Kenneth Fulton; and Texas Tech University, where he studied with Richard Bjella.
Dr. Jessica Nápoles is Interim Chair of Conducting and Ensembles division at the University of North Texas. She is an Associate Professor of Choral Music Education and Conductor of the Concert Choir. A native of Florida with a CubanAmerican background, Dr. Nápoles taught in the public schools of Miami and Orlando, FL. She received three degrees in Music Education from the Florida State University. Prior to her appointment at UNT, she taught at the University of Utah for 11 years. Dr. Nápoles is an active conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. She has conducted All State and honor choirs in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Utah, as well as the Southern and Western division honor choirs for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). In addition to her work as a conductor, Dr. Nápoles is a well-known researcher, with numerous publications in prestigious journals. She serves as Assistant Conference Chair for the national ACDA conference and previously as Honor Choir Coordinator.
Dr. Gary Seighman is Director of Choral Activities at Trinity University in San Antonio. Under his direction, Trinity’s choirs have garnered accolades with performances at TMEA, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, the College Music Society National Conference, and frequent international touring. He also conducts the Town-&-Gown Choral Union. This year he was awarded the university’s inaugural “Best of the Best” Merit Award for distinguished teaching. Seighman has traveled to East Asia five times to direct the Peking Opera Program, lead graduate masterclasses, and conduct throughout the region. He was chorusmaster for the Classical Music Festival in Vienna and is a conductor with Manhattan Concert Productions. His current schedule includes engagements in Nashville, NYC, Hong Kong, Taiwan, DC, London, and Dublin. Seighman holds degrees from Westminster Choir College, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Maryland.

One of the strengths of TCDA is the diversity of our membership. When we consider the amazing variety of programming and outreach and advocacy our members pursue in their many school, church, and community endeavors— it takes your breath away. There is something we all share, and that is a desire for our singers, from the youngest to the oldest among us, to pursue not just an education in music, but a musical life. As TCDA members, we must encourage our singers to use their voices for building positive and lasting change, genuine community, and authentic relationships—for their entire lives. Are we promoting a culture of singing, music as a way of life, in our schools and communities? Do we have a thoughtful plan for advancing our musicians from one level to the next, from elementary to middle and high school to college and beyond? The Royal School of Church Music calls their curriculum, Voice for Life. I consider this something of a battle cry, a concept we should all earnestly consider. If elected, I will help our members articulate a vision of “voice for life” and consider ways we can support one another and our students while leveraging our resources towards life-long music-making.

Teachers are heroes. What we all do in choir classrooms is nothing short of life changing. It is born of generosity, servant leadership, and a genuine love of music and people. I am passionate about serving with teachers. At both states where I have lived prior to moving to Texas (Florida and Utah), I have served on the state ACDA boards. For the past eight years, I have also served on the Steering Committee for the national ACDA. I value being in community with other teachers to provide opportunities for unity and professional development. I moved to Texas because I was well aware of the fantastic choral programs in this state, led by phenomenal human beings who give so much of themselves to their students. My work at UNT these past three years has confirmed those perceptions: the caliber of what we do at the university is only possible because of the efforts of music teachers all over the state. If elected, I will continue the excellent trajectory already established in TCDA and seek to introduce our university students to this wonderful community.
If elected…
I’ve always been fascinated with Leonardo da Vinci which stems from my interest in topics ranging from astronomy, psychology, fitness/ physiology, and art. So what? Many sectors are nowadays seeking people whose skills blend technical knowledge with artistry. We see it in companies like Pixar and Netflix along with their collaborative workplace environments. I experience it speaking with medical schools and personnel from Google when being a reference for my graduating choir members. They want evidence of people skills, teamwork, and creativity. The top-down model of leadership is dying, and I believe choir represents an embodiment of this paradigm shift. I bring considerable experience as someone able to discuss our art with the “outside” world. This is where College/Community converge. I’m skipping the usual platitudes about TCDA because we already know. For 20 years I’ve presented at conventions including TCDA. However, I’m equally proud when invited to speak to entrepreneurs, fundraisers, special needs teachers, and even fitness instructor workshops. I’ve consecutively served as a grant reviewer for the Texas Commission on the Arts and on multiple boards including the DC/MD Choral Director Association where I developed initiatives to enhance music in our nation’s capital. I would provide a voice to organizations regardless of their size. We should go beyond simply preaching to the choir.
TCDA presents 2 Candidates for the TCDA Board of Directors Church Vice President Allen Hightower
Morris Stevens, Jr.
Dr. Allen Hightower is a life-long church musician, who began his service in music ministry as a high school student playing the organ and piano in both Baptist and Episcopal churches in his home town of Livingston. Throughout his life, he has served in various leadership roles in Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational churches in Texas, California, and Minnesota. He currently serves on the Music and Worship staff of the Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas. Allen is Director of Choral Studies at the University of North Texas, where he conducts the A Cappella Choir, Grand Chorus, and Vox Aquilae. At UNT, he leads the graduate program in choral conducting. Previous appointments have included posts at Luther College, Sam Houston State University, Odessa Permian High School, and Klein High School. Dr. Hightower holds degrees from Sam Houston State, the Eastman School of Music, Baylor University, and UCLA.
Dr. Morris Stevens, Jr. has served as a music educator and music minister at all levels in Texas since 1975. He is currently Assistant Professor and Music Department Head at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. Also, this is his 30th year serving as Associate Director of Music at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Austin. While teaching in the public schools his choirs earned consistent UIL sweepstakes honors and festival best-in-class honors. In 1984 his choir performed at the TMEA convention. In 2007 he established the SEU Masterworks Singers and Orchestra, an organization that has performed sacred music concerts in 12 countries. Morris is a member of and has served TMEA, TCDA, ACDA, TMAA, and the National Pastoral Musicians. He is so very grateful to have received the TCDA Choral Excellence Award in the summer of 2018. A strong advocate for musical literacy at all levels of education and sacred music ministry; he has co-written and published numerous texts with his friend and writing partner Stan McGill. A Central Texas native, Morris holds BMusEd from UT Austin, MM in conducting from UT at San Antonio, and Ph.D. in music education from UT Austin.

TCDA has had a profound impact upon my life and career as a choral and church musician. I first attended TCDA while an undergraduate student, singing in a College Student Symposium Choir conducted by Donald Bailey. Throughout my student days and professional career, I have been active in both church music ministry and in the academic world of teaching. Having lived in both worlds, I have a deep appreciation for the many TCDA members who dually serve as teachers and as church musicians. I count among my closest friends many whose calling has been to full-time music ministry. It would be my joy to seek to serve both constituencies as part of the TCDA board. If elected, I would seek to enhance and equip the ministry of the church musician in three ways. I would work to plan and create an inspiring worship service at the convention that seeks to encourage and uplift the diverse membership of TCDA. I would work to create meaningful sessions to equip church musicians in their local ministry. Working with publishers, I would endeavor to ensure that a wide variety of quality choral music written for worship would be made available to our membership through reading sessions.

I am immensely grateful I joined TCDA as a young man in 1975. This organization has grown in size and influence due to the untiring efforts of so many who have given their time and talent to building a vibrant community of educators and music ministers. I am both humbled and honored to be nominated for the Church Division Vice President of TCDA. If elected, I pledge to use the words, “what is true, what is good, what is beautiful” as my foundation for the decisions made for the Church Division. Music ministry is a high calling, and we are at a critical time in the history of sacred music. As TCDA we must present clinicians, sessions, and events with a constant commitment to what is true, good, and beautiful. These foundational elements will reach the hearts of all denominations and renew the communities of faith who face daunting challenges from the secular world. I will strive to provide vision for beauty in sacred worship. TCDA is and always will be the family supporting the valued work of the brothers and sisters in music ministry.

Voci Passato Performance Dr. Kenneth Fulton, Conductor Voci Passato (Past Voices) is living evidence of a continuing collective love of choral music-making together, a passion that annually brings singers together to re-create a greater and more significant aesthetic than one could ever produce alone. The singers of Voci Passato are former singers (and family members) in the LSU A Cappella Choir from 1985-2012 and conducted by Dr. Kenneth Fulton, now retired LSU Alumni Professor Emeritus of Choral Studies and TCDA President 1973-1975.

Pre-Concert Performance Tallowood Baptist Church Choir Carlos Ichter, Conductor The Tallowood Choir and Orchestra is comprised of over 220 volunteer musicians who provide weekly musical leadership in the worship services at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston. This renowned congregation has more than 4000 members and is known for its vibrant music program both in the United States and abroad. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of genres ranging from classical and traditional church music to gospels and spirituals. The Tallowood Choir is under the direction of Carlos Ichter, Pastor of Music and Worship of the church. The orchestra is directed by Ryan Barker.

Worship Service Featuring Elaine Hagenberg, whose music “soars with eloquence and ingenuity” (ACDA Choral Journal). With over 50 commissioned works, she has composed new music for the ACDA Women’s Choir Consortium, colleges and universities, community choirs, and churches. She will also present three clinics as well as one reading session entitled, “My Story in Song: A Reading Session with Elaine Hagenberg”. The Tallowood Choir and Orchestra will provide music for the service.

SACC has performed over 500 works on 50 programs in eight cities with a repertoire ranging from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries. In 2014, Richard Bjella joined SACC as Artistic Director and he has expanded the vision of the ensemble by collaborating with dozens of organizations throughout the state of Texas.

2020 TCDA Elementary Honor Choir Performance Rollo Dilworth, Conductor Renowned conductor Rollo Dilworth is Vice Dean, Professor of Choral Music education, and Chair of the Department of Music Education and Therapy at Temple University’s Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts in Philadelphia, PA. He will also present one session entitled, “Sing What You Hear, Not What You See: Choral Music in the Oral/Aural Tradition“. Mr. Dilworth will be accompanied by Jimmy Baas, choral composer and Assistant Choir Director at Arlington HS in Arlington, TX.

2020 TCDA MS/JH All-State Choir Performance Featuring Daniel Gutierrez Daniel Gutierrez is the choir director at Nixa High School and Nixa Junior High School. Daniel’s speaking engagements include presenting for TEDx, regional and National ACDA conferences, and other choral workshops nationally. Daniel will rehearse and lead the All-State middle school/junior high singers through a wonderful program of pieces. He will also present a session entitled, “The Engaged Singer”. Mr. Gutierrez will be accompanied by Debby Barkey, Assistant Director of Music and Worship at FUMC of Hurst.

In Memoriam James Moore, 11/26/1938 – 11/19/2019 Jim’s musical career spanned over 50 years. He was Director of Choral Activities at East Texas Baptist University when he retired and served as the choral director of Irving HS for many years. Jim served as TMEA president 1977 - 1978. Carroll Barnes, 11/22/1940 – 12/03/19 Carroll was born in Abilene, TX and graduated Abilene High School. He attended the University of North Texas where he graduated with a degree in Music and then received his Masters Degree in Administration from Stephen F. Austin University. Carroll was President of TCDA 1981 - 1983. Known as the “Round Mound of Sound”, Carroll was a friend to many, an inspiration to more and a teacher to everyone.
