Welcome to the 63rd Annual TCDA Convention! I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer of rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation. And with the start of a new school year/church year/concert season just around the corner, I know you are ready for new ideas, fresh inspiration, and the invaluable affirmation that comes from spending time with your colleagues – your choir “family.” I think the next few days will provide that in so many ways! My last article explored the concept of choral music as “slow food for the soul.” Well, your choral banquet is ready! The TCDA Board has been preparing this feast for almost a year, so grab your napkins and dig in. Dr. Pam Elrod Huffman We hope you will immerse yourself in everything this Convention has President to offer – reading sessions, workshops, concerts (the Elementary Honor Choir, mirabai, AND the Dallas Street Choir!), the worship service, Convocation, the Sing-In, and of course, the Soiree. As in past years, we have also included dedicated time in the schedule for you to visit our vendors, so I encourage you to spend time exploring the amazing exhibit hall that we’re privileged to have year after year. Without our vendors, we wouldn’t have a Convention – their continued commitment to our organization not only provides us with countless resources, it also helps to offset the price tag of this extraordinary event. I know you’re ready to jump in and start feasting, but before you do, if you haven’t already done so, please make sure you take a moment and cast your votes for our newest TCDA officers. The Orff-Schulwerk media are best known as “singing, saying, moving, and playing.” So why do so many people seem to think of this approach as “the one with the instruments”? In this hands-on workshop, we will learn three choral music octavos using elements commonly used in the Orff-Schulwerk approach: 1) beginning with a melodic outline; 2) movement; and 3) improvisation.

In Memoriam Charles Wade Nelson, 92, passed away June 1, 2018, in Denton, Texas. On this day, the choral community lost a wonderful friend, music educator, respected singer, and mentor. Charles is survived by son Charles David of Denton, daughter Bari Ann Nelson Nicholls of Colorado Springs, and seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by wife Betty, son Byron Nelson III, parents John and Madge Nelson, brother Byron Nelson, and sister Margaret Sherman. Charles married Betty Jean Brown, the love of his life, in 1947. After graduating from the University of North Texas with a master’s degree in music education, he taught choir at the high school in Carthage, Harlingen, and in Edinburg, Texas, and he also taught at the college level at Lipscomb University, Texas A&M Commerce, and Abilene Christian University. During this career and after retirement in 1986, Charles performed over 2300 times with 116 colleges and universities, 71 symphony orchestras, in 49 states and 15 foreign countries. Highlights include performances with symphonies in Dallas, San Antonio. Houston, Atlanta, St. Petersburg (Russia), Vilnius (Lithuania), New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, and Kansas City. Several performances were with the great Robert Shaw and Pablo Casals. Charles led a rich life in every sense of the word. He was a beloved father and grandfather, educator, mentor, singer, and extraordinary story-teller. He was also one of the last surviving TCDA “founding” members, and was instrumental in forming a timeline of TCDA events for the 60th Anniversary. As TMEA Region IV Secretary in 1950, Charles assisted in setting up the first reading clinic in Dallas, where Tom Keel, his friend from college, was elected the first President of TCDA. Charles was very proud to be a part of the early days in the formation of TCDA, and our association is grateful to this day to have this wonderful man in our lives for so many years. Memorials may be made to the Charles & Betty Nelson Endowed Vocal Music Scholarship at Abilene Christian University, Abilene TX. www.tcda.net
