Your Opinion Counts!!

Changes, Growth and Rebirth Blessed are you in your comings and blessed may you be as you go forth. (Deuteronomy 28:6)

Time of changes, growth and rebirth are upon us this month—the trees have flowered, the birds are singing and much new life is popping out all over the place - life is again turning. Within our congregational family, children are graduating and moving forward… growing from preschool to elementary school, high school to college and from university life into the life of the world. A special Mazal Tov to our ECEC grads: Ben Berger, Edward McLendon, Harleigh Perkins, Brody Schochet and Benjamin Weiner And to those seniors graduating from Kivunim: Tobias Leventhal, Ryan Mermelstein, Riley Boehm, Drew Baker and Jacob Shippel To all, but most especially to these ten souls on both ends of the educational spectrum we say,

Lech Lecha Go forward with our love and our blessing. At our May 5th 6:30 pm Ruach Shabbat, we will offer a blessing over all graduates, no matter their age or stage. This month we also bid farewell to our long time TBT educators: Hassia Levin, who is retiring after serving 40-plus years in Jewish education and Jenifer Friedman, who after nurturing our youngest members, first as preschool teacher and then as ECEC director for over 15 years, will be joining the incredible teaching staff of the High Meadows School here in Roswell. A number of special events are planned to say thank you for their years of love and dedication to our children. On Saturday, May 13th, at our 30th anniversary gala, Hassia will be recognized and presented with a very special piece of art commissioned in her honor. We hope that you have reserved your place for what we know will be an incredible evening. On Friday, May 19th, the ECEC families will gather for their annual end-of-year picnic. A beautiful handmade memory quilt has been created in Jen’s honor. If your children attended the ECEC at any time, we hope that you will add your names and special wishes to the quilt, which will be presented to Jen at the May 19th picnic. *If you have not had an opportunity to add your name, it will be on display in the synagogue lobby until mid-May. Of course, we look forward to all of our continued memory-making opportunities together. But stopping to notice these moments of transition bring us blessing along the journey. And so, to all of those who are turning a page we say, We thank you G*d for bringing us to this holy time of transition in the lives of these people and our community. Watch over them, G*d and protect them, as they move to new horizons. May they always know goodness, wholeness and peace. “B’ruchim atem b’vo-achem, b’ruchim atem b’tzeit-chem” Amen, Sela!

Our Confirmation Service will be held on Friday, May 12th at 8:00 pm The following confirmands will assist in leading the service that evening:

Eric Bruckman, son of Adrienne and Adam Bruckman Lacie Greenspan, daughter of Karen and Mark Greenspan Nathan Janes, son of Beth and David Janes Justin Kremer, son of Karen and Rob Kremer Ellie Loventhal, daughter of Michal and Gary Loventhal Jasmine Peterson, daughter of Sheyla and Gary Peterson

News & Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah

Notes from Cantor Kassel There is: “Cher” “Madonna”, “Prince”, “Bono”, “Adele”…… people who are so ‘singular’ that they need only one name to be recognized. Well, around here: THERE IS ‘ONE’ ….. HASSIA! Like the celebrities in the world at large, when you think of a person known by just one name, certain images and feelings come to you as soon as the name is uttered or thought of. This also holds true with our beloved Hassia. When I think of Hassia….. I imagine her standing in the Religious School lobby with a large smile on her face as she greets the children. When I think of Hassia.... I imagine her preparing dishes for religious and social gatherings, where as tasty as the food is sure to be, the main ingredient is without doubt – love! When I think of Hassia…… I see her standing next to the Israeli flag or singing Hatikvah with enduring love and devotion to both the land and people of Israel. When I think of Hassia…… I think of love and loyalty – to her family, to her friends, to Temple Beth Tikvah and to the larger Jewish community. “Love” is clearly the connecting word in singing the praises of Hassia. I’ve always marveled at how Hassia stays involved and intimately connected to so many people and causes. As busy as she has always been, she has always taken time to ask about my welfare and that of my family, her attention completely focused on me and not on the many possible distractions. This is how Hassia is – she genuinely cares! I hope, with all my heart, that Hassia knows how beloved she is to Temple Beth Tikvah and how grateful we all are for her passionate devotion to this congregation’s very beginnings and all it has taken to sustain it for thirty years! I know ‘I’ am grateful for her support of me as a cantor throughout my years here and how she has made me feel so valued in the life cycles of her family. Hassia…… you have more than earned the opportunity to spend more time with your family here in Atlanta, in Israel and elsewhere. May all the people you have nurtured over the years at Temple Beth Tikvah – make you proud by the way we live our lives. I wish you and your extended family many continued blessings. With love, gratitude, appreciation and a hearty Mazal Tov, -Nancy

Religious School Dear Friends,

H

ard to believe we are marking our 30th anniversary as the Temple Beth Tikvah Community.

It has been a fulfilling and meaningful journey personally and professionally. I have been lucky to help educate two generations of committed Jewish children and “shaf nachas” with their parents and grandparents. I have been privileged to work with my mentor and teacher Rabbi Tam. I also want to thank Cantor Kassel for her support of the school. Her beautiful voice has enriched our tefillah and inspired our children. A personal thank you to Lara Rozenman for 23 years of devotion to the music program. It has been my fortune to be blessed with a committed and loyal faculty and awesome madrichim. The school could not flourish without all of you. Any organization, including ours, could not have functioned successfully without a diligent and knowledgeable staff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you Rabbi Shuval-Weiner for your warmth and support. I would also like to mention Rabbi Levine,)‫ (ז״ל‬and Rabbi Greene for their assistance during my tenure. Susan Cosden, may you find your new position as fulfilling and rewarding as I have these last 30 years. ‫חזקי ואמצי‬ With Love,

Hassia Levin

News and Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah

For over forty years, Hassia Levin and Rabbi Donald Tam have shared a very special relationship. Beginning with their early years working together at the Temple in Atlanta, they forged what would become a lifelong friendship. In 1978, when Rabbi Tam moved on to create Temple Emanu-El in Dunwoody, Hassia went with him to become their first religious school director. Finally in 1987, Hassia and Rabbi Tam would bring their talents together once again with the founding of Temple Beth Tikvah. With such a long, and wonderful connection, it is only fitting for TBT’s rabbi emeritus Don Tam to share some words of reflection upon the occasion of Hassia’s retirement in this month’s Kol Tikvah.

Rabbi Shuval-Weiner

Hassia Levin's Retirement as Director of Beth Tikvah's Religious School After thirty years of service to our Synagogue Community as Director of our Religious School, Hassia Levin will be retiring at the end of this school year. For thirty years Hassia has organized the school year, hired teachers, set the daily and special formats for Sunday mornings and mid-week school. Before we had a Cantor, Hassia set up our Bar and Bat Mitzvah program. She organized the structure of our car pools. In those early years she oversaw the Religious School in a variety of venues making do with less than perfect situations. We did not always have a beautiful building in which to house our school. Hassia prepared everything necessary for our children's learning, guiding our teachers in such a way that the best possible results could be reached. She was the force behind our curriculum, the goal of which was the attempt to make our children comfortable in any Jewish setting in which they might find themselves. She did an outstanding job and her efforts produced sweet fruit. It wasn't always easy. Sometimes she had to navigate between parents' needs and those of our children. Always she tried to balance the two. When conflict could not be avoided she worked out what was best for the children. From nothing in 1987 she created a flourishing Religious School, asking teachers to work for free, as she did, that first school year when there was little money available to the Temple. So loyal were her teachers to her, that Hassia was able to arrange a full cohort of teachers that year and for every year afterwards, in an environment where there are many fewer qualified teachers of Hebrew and Jewish thought, history, and observance than there are individuals needed to fill the needs of the various religious schools in our community. She never started a school year fishing around for qualified teachers. They were already in place by the first day of school. More than our Religious School Director, Hassia has been an enthusiastic leader and member of our community. Among the most active of our membership, especially in the early years of Beth Tikvah, there would have been no synagogue at all without her efforts among a few families, to found our Synagogue community. She worked tirelessly from those years up until the present, to create what we have, not just in our Religious School, but in our Synagogue. She has been a valued participant in many areas of our community life, giving advice and helping to create an atmosphere of caring and friendship. Hassia will be very much missed. How grateful we are to her for helping to shape from nothing, a thriving Temple. We will look forward to seeing her in the halls of our Synagogue building, in the sanctuary she helped to build, and moving among us as a precious congregant, as we go forward in the years to come.

ECEC “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Winnie the Pooh -

A

s I write this article, I find myself full of mixed emotions. I am sad that this will be my last writing as the Director of our Early Childhood Education Center, but excited about what the future brings. I have been a part of our preschool for fifteen years, the last nine as the director. It has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. I have watched the growth and development of so many children, developed relationships with so many families, and have worked with very incredible people. I only can hope that I have had a positive effect on all of them, the same way they have me. Our Early Childhood Education Center is an amazing place. It is where children grow and develop their Jewish identities, learn to be part of the community, and become independent and confident beings. It is a nurturing and happy place. I will miss it. But I take comfort in knowing that Susan Cosden, our new Director of Congregational Learning, will continue to provide the loving environment our families have grown accustomed to. So, although I am sad to leave and say goodbye, I am also looking forward to seeing the preschool’s continued success through happy children and happy families. I want to thank all of you that have supported me and the school over the years. I want to wish Susan much joy and happiness in her new position at Temple Beth Tikvah. I am lucky to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard. I will forever be grateful to Temple Beth Tikvah’s preschool and all that have been a part of my journey. Thank you.

Jenifer Friedman

Congregational Learning - Susan Cosden “As my people went from land to land, something passed from hand to hand. And it isn’t just the words and stories, of the ancient laws and golden glories. It’s the way we study, the book we study. I’m standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me.” Doug Cotler’s “I’m Standing on the Shoulders”

This song has been in my head often lately as I start work as your first Director of Congregational Learning. It is an honor to serve Temple Beth Tikvah and to stand on the shoulders of Jenifer Friedman and Hassia Levin. How blessed am I to have this time to work with them side by side to gain from their experience and their knowledge of our students, our parents, and our congregation. How blessed this congregation has been to have had Jenifer involved with the ECEC for fifteen years and directing it the past nine years; and to have had Hassia found and direct the religious school for the past thirty years. We are all the beneficiaries of their dedication, passion, and commitment to our heritage. As we continue to move forward in providing the best education possible for all of our students, ages one through one hundred and twenty, I invite each of you to be my partner in creating and fulfilling our educational vision. Please accept my invitation to meet for coffee, a meal, or just meet in my office so I can get to know you. I want to learn about your journey so far and what your hopes and dreams are for the rest of your Jewish journey as an individual. How can we best help you add more meaning and purpose in your life through Judaism? If you are a parent in our schools, I also hope to learn about your hopes and dreams for your family’s Jewish journey. I will be doing my best to reach out to each of you. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me as well. My email is education@bethtikvah.com. My cell phone is 973-917-9294. (Yes, it is still a New Jersey number.) Also, feel free to just drop by the temple and visit with me. I am in during the school year Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. During the summer I will be in during the entire work week. If we haven’t met yet, please introduce yourself to me when you see me at carpool, services, the gala, or the congregation’s annual meeting. I hope together we can dream big and build upon a solid foundation. Doug Cotler sings, “And it (Torah) isn’t just the words and stories, of the ancient laws and golden glories. It’s the way we study, the book we study.” Our Torah is so much more than just words, stories, and laws. The study of Torah allows us the opportunity to be in relationship with ourselves, with our family, with our classmates, with our congregation, with Jews around the world, with Jews throughout time, with Israel, with the larger community, with our tradition, and with God. It is why we study in chavruta (with a partner) and why we study in community. With your help, and by standing on the shoulders of those who came before us, together we will continue to enrich our educational programs. May we go from strength to strength. Summer’s Coming! School is nearing an end, vacation plans are being finalized, and we all look forward to our jam-packed schedules loosening up a bit. Summer affords a fresh opportunity to slow down and dust off our personal to-do lists. What a great time to re-connect with your TBT community and with Jewish living! How can you do that? Here are just some ideas:

7. Prepare for those long flights or languid beach stays by picking up a Jewish-themed book or two. Perhaps The Zookeeper’s Wife (also now in theaters) or As a Driven Leaf (perennial favorite)? 8. Share your interest in an activity such as hiking, wine tasting, exploring new restaurants, Mah Jongg, or meditation with like-minded TBT members at one of our Affinity Group events. Contact Andrea Rubin at rubin.andrea@gmail.com to find out more and to get connected.

1. If it’s been a while, have Shabbat dinner at home with family and/or friends. Consider making it extra special by involving everyone in baking the challah. 2. Join with fellow members to learn about and celebrate Shavuot, an oft-neglected but major holiday on the Jewish calendar which marks the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Shavuot events will take place at TBT this year on May 30 (evening) and 31 (morning).

9. Squish that procrastination bug and do the things you’ve been meaning to do. Have you thought about joining a chavurah (social group of TBT peers)? Have you considered volunteering to help our synagogue community in some way, or do you have an idea for something new that you’d like us to start? Contact me at harlanng@yahoo.com if you need guidance on where to go next.

3. Enroll your pre-school child in one of the week-long summer camps that TBT is sponsoring. Contact the preschool office at 678-350-0076for more details.

With just a bit of planning, this can be the perfect time to renew your connections to Judaism and to Temple Beth Tikvah. I wish you a marvelous summer!

4. Enjoy some quality family time at a relaxed Friday night or Saturday morning Shabbat service. As a reminder, Friday night services are at 6:30pm on the first and third Friday of the month and at 8:00pm on the 2nd and 4th (and 5th) Friday.

L’Shalom,

5. Catch a movie and participate in the follow-on discussion at a TBT Movie Nite. Next up is Hava Nagila (The Movie) at 7pm on May 20, a selection from a prior Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Come at 6pm with bring-your-own-dinner (dairy or pareve) if you’d also like to schmooze with other congregants. And please bring a non-perishable food item as tzedakah for the Food Bank.

Harlan Graiser, President P.S. And don't forget to register here to attend our Annual Congregational Meeting on 5/24! We need to have a quorum to vote in the new Board and to pass the proposed budget. You'll also get a chance to meet Susan Cosden, our new Director of Congregational Learning.

6. Experience the richness of Torah study by attending a Rabbi’s Table study session starting around 12:15p on Saturdays. You don’t have to attend services first – honest!

B’not Mitzvah Mara Naomi Mershon will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 6, 2017. Mara is the daughter of Barrie Cohn and Ric Mershon, and sister to Jake. She is a 7th grader at Haynes Bridge Middle School. Her hobbies include Alpharetta Fire travel softball, performing at the JCC and Roswell Youth Theater, playing the viola, art and creative writing.

Lola Jett Bessoff will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 20, 2017. Daughter of Bram and Anne Bessoff, Lola is the older sister to Riley Bessoff. In honor of her great grandmothers, Lillian Bessoff and Sylvia Goodman, she was given the Hebrew name Lila Silva. Loosely translated, Lila means night and Silva means from the forest. This aptly fits as she likes to stay up late watching movies or reading, otherwise you can find her camping in the mountains. Lola plans to continue her spiritual journey by visiting Israel with her grandparents in June where she will be participating in another ceremony in front of the Western Wall. The tallit she is wearing was hand-made exclusively for the Women of the Wall by Yair Emanuel in Israel. This international group fights for the rights of women and girls who want to wear a tallit or read from the Torah in front of the Wailing Wall. The Bimah decorations are from Lola’s World, the theme of her Bat Mitzvah - a place where your imagination can run wild and anything is possible. These book trees hold many of Lola’s favorite literature, which will be donated as part of her Mitzvah project. As told in her parashat, Lola is helping children learn responsibility and right from wrong through the literature she has chosen. Lola attends 7th grade at Mill Creek Middle School. When she is not playing softball or clarinet, Lola enjoys hanging out with friends, reading and traveling.

Youth Group Reflections on NFTY-SAR Hatikvah Kallah 2017 I couldn't be more thankful for the experiences Hatikvah Kallah gave me this year! From meeting new people, to fun song sessions and services, it was all a blast!!! My first experience at kallah will never be forgotten!!! I met people from other youth groups, who I know will always be by my side, and learning about myself through group activities was so intriguing. I am sad that this was my last Hatikvah Kallah, but I'm super excited for Spring Kallah and many more events. My advice for upcoming 6, 7 & 8th graders is to attend any and all NFTY and youth group events that you can. I promise you won't regret it. The experience you get will change your life forever!!! - Abby Limor, 8th grader

What an awesome community we have! We created a beautiful Daffodil garden representing some of the 2.5 million children who perished in the holocaust. Our religious school students, preschool students, youth group members as well as teachers, clergy, parents and other congregants helped plant this beautiful memorial garden last fall and watched as the daffodils bloomed this past month. Thank you to everyone for the financial support, prep work, planting and enthusiasm you showed as we participated in this awesome and international Daffodil Project! We plan to add even more next year!

Greetings from Sisterhood! We have had a very active spring and must say thank you to all our vibrant Sisterhood planners and leaders. This past month was very busy as we hosted Knit and Nosh, had a book review (Modern Girls by Jennifer Brown), participated in a program called “It’s the Journey” related to education about the BRCA genes and its genetic link to breast cancer, and had our social get together at The Mill. Thanks go out to Terry Carasick, Kara Segal and Jenni Trebon for great planning. We have had wonderful participation and hope to see you all at our next adventures! Our Passover cookbook project has been a big success. New ideas and scrumptious recipes have been highlighted in our cookbook. Special thanks are in order for Diane Katz and Paula Weinberger for spearheading this endeavor. We hope you all had a lovely Pesach with new culinary delights.
