A MESSAGE FROM THE

Rabbi

Happy (secular) New Year!! As we look to 2023, Temple Beth Tikvah continues our focus on Connection, Joy and Purpose-Driven Living as we celebrate our 36th year: Double Chai, Double Life!

We are so very excited for all the new and deepened opportunities for connecting with one another in this celebratory year! New Mom’s Night Out group, new Chavurot, new Book Group and Rosh Chodesh Yoga, the 2nd annual TBT Golf Tournament and a new round of Torah study for those who love to dig deep and wrestle with our audacious sacred narrative!

TBT’s Scholar-in-Residence weekend returns in 2023, featuring Rabbi Jeff Salkin, of “Martini Judaism” fame. In preparation for the Saturday evening event on the music and theology of Leonard Cohen, you may want to watch the 2022 documentary “Halleluyah: A Journey, A Song.” Available on Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu or Redbox. (For all of Rabbi Salkin’s talks throughout the weekend, click here, or see front page.)

In other exciting anniversary news, TBT will be returning to Israel in December 2023. A marvelous itinerary is being planned with the help of Cheri Levitan of Kenes Travel, appropriate for firsttimers and Israel returnees, and pilgrims of all ages. Costs and travel information will be available shortly. If you would like to be on our list of interested travelers, contact Rabbi ShuvalWeiner.

There are several very exciting plans in the works for our TBT community, including a Gala Weekend in autumn of 2023 as part of our 36th year celebration! A Save-The-Date card will be coming to your inbox shortly! If you are interested in joining the planning team, give us a call.

We are all just so incredibly excited for all that this new year holds. If you would like to be involved in this, or any other opportunity at TBT, please give a buzz to Suzanne Hurwitz, Engagement Director; she will welcome your call.

In financial news, we are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support for our synagogue community in 2022. As of this writing, we have now met both the On-Board and GIPL matching goals. Thanks to all who made it happen!

As we move into 2023, I am so very excited to share that the Arthur Blank Foundation has gifted TBT with two gifts, one of which is a $250,000 matching grant challenge. *All donations raised between January 1 and November 30 of 2023 will go toward meeting this dollar-for-dollar challenge, up to the 250K mark. The funds raised from this drive will help TBT with several projects including, but not limited to, facility enhancements, security upgrades and deferred maintenance. More information about the Blank gifts and this particular opportunity will be shared next month. *If you would like to consider a gift toward this challenge grant, please speak with Eric Chanin, Mark Rudel or Rabbi Shuval-Weiner.

A MESSAGE

FROM OUR

President

There are a couple of questions I have been thinking about lately. What does engagement mean to you, as it relates to TBT? Do you feel connected to our temple as more than just a place to go for the High Holy Days? Engagement can be accomplished in many ways: spiritually, socially, through educational programs, through performing mitzvot with us, and much more.

In an effort to focus on building community and giving our members ways to connect to one another and to TBT in recent months there have been some changes to our lay staff. We hired a Director of Engagement, Suzanne Hurwitz, who previously served as interim religious school director, and a Social Media Specialist, Jamie Bluestein. I hope you have noticed more events on the calendar and have seen a rise in a TBT social media presence.

Specifically, we have additional programs, from Tikvah Tots play time through adult learning opportunities. We have enjoyed Shabbat dinners together, musical programs, a Chanukah bazaar and more. With the help of our lay leaders, Chavurah groups are growing, and our affinity groups are spending time together again, after the pandemic put a pause on in-person gatherings. Suzanne has reached out to many of you to find out what sorts of things you want to see happen at TBT. If you haven’t spoken to her yet and have an idea, please call her; she wants to learn what is important to each of our congregants.

On social media, we have seen a large increase in engagement and interaction. Help spread the word: TBT is the place to be! If you are not already following us, please do: Facebook and Instagram

These are exciting times at TBT, and I’m glad we are all a part of it.

PRESCHOOL

Chanukah is an especially fun time of the year for so many children. They play dreidel, eat chocolate gelt, make yummy latkes and sufganiyot, and get lots of presents!

This year, we tried to think of a meaningful way to help the preschool children understand the concept of giving back, or TikkunOlam (repairing the world). We came up with the idea of having each child go through their toys at home to find one or two that they love, but don’t play with anymore. Our students (and their parents) did not disappoint! We collected so many toys for other children who may not have any toys at all. We had a week during which toys were collected, and then a day when each child helped wash and wipe down the toys to be given away. Then, our parent volunteers delivered the toys to North Fulton

Community Charities. It was a very successful project, and the children loved giving back to others who are less fortunate.

I hope everyone had a fun Chanukah, and a Happy New Year!

We are currently accepting Preschool registrations for the 2023-2024 school year. TBT Preschool is a warm, learn-through-play environment, with a low student-teacher ratio in each class. If you know of someone who may be interested in enrolling their child, please feel free to share our information with them.

Click here for the TBT Preschool Registrationform.

It is always so easy to look ahead of the calendar and see what about plans upcoming, to be forward-facing and forward-moving, eager to leave the past behind. Still, it seems to me that we must sometimes cease with continuous motion, at least long enough to take a pause, breathe, and evaluate all that has come before. We have already accomplished so much in our TBT educational programs this year we should stop to ve done, before relentlessly pressing on. In the fall semester, we welcomed six teachers, an Madrichim, and over 60 students to our Sunday program, and four teachers and almost 30 teens on Monday nights. We kicked off a brand-new FREE K. Grades 1, 2, and 6 held meaningful Family Education programs. In conjunction with the Youth Department, we sent out our very first experiential trip when our 6th graders traveled to Whitwell, TN, and by the time this goes to print, th th

four months immersed in the Shalom Learning curriculum, diving deep into studies of Jewish values and their applications in everyday life. Lia, our , has taught us all about her Kibbutz and is slowly inculcating Hebrew slang into our regular vocabulary. Together, we celebrated the High Holy Days with apples and honey and visits to the sukkah, and in December, we commemorated the Festival of Lights (and oil) with a morning making sufganiyot. On Monday nights, we shared a wide variety of dinners, including LOADS of cookies and ice cream! 8

spent time in the kitchen learning how to make Jewish foods, and 10th, 11th, and 12th graders explored the ways history is communicated over time, and the roles each and every one of us play in creating new paths.

This spring, we are excited to reintroduce Chuggim and to continue the learning at all levels. Check out the calendar below for a snippet of events scheduled for January and February. Be on the lookout for information coming soon about our Purim celebration in March, a project-based learning initiative on Sunday mornings, and a brand-new 4th , 5th, and 6th grade retreat at Camp Coleman in April.

Here’s to positive reflections and continued successes!

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Next month is HOTTY’s Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! Before RSVP’ing to join us for the night, you might want to know what Camp Jenny is…Camp Jenny is a summer camp hosted by NFTYSAR (National Federation of Temple Youth— Southern Area Region) over Memorial Day weekend at Camp Coleman in Cleveland, Georgia. The campers who attend Camp Jenny are from F.L. Stanton Elementary School, located in an impoverished area of Atlanta. The campers must meet certain character standards such as participation in school and kindness towards others in order to go to Camp Jenny, where they enjoy the activities and atmosphere of camp, as well as the love and attention of their counselors, all of whom are NFTY-SAR teens.

It costs $500 to send one camper to Camp Jenny. Last year we raised $2622 and sent five kids to Camp Jenny! This year, we’re hoping to raise enough money to send six campers.

So, mark your calendars to join us on February 11 at HOTTY’s Annual Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! It’s a fun night for all ages, with dinner, bingo, lots of great prizes, and a live auction. Hope to see you there!

Get excited for an awesome guest musician, Jacob “Spike” Kraus, coming in March. A favorite at Camp Coleman, Spike is a 30-year-old singer/songwriter, educator and innovator. His

music has been included in the cantorial curriculum of Hebrew Union College –Jewish Institute of Religion, and is featured on Jewish Rock Radio & PJ Library. Spike has been song leading for over ten years at synagogues, day schools, and camps.

In 2014, he released his first album “Shake Off the Dust,” featuring the smash hit “What Makes You Glow,” known endearingly in most circles as “Fish Swim.” His music is eclectic, drawing on themes from Pop, Rock, Folk, and Rhythm & Blues genres. Not one to be “put in a box” stylistically, Jacob hates the question “What kind of music do you play?” His go-to answer: “the feel-it-in-your-bones, can’t-stop-humming-it-later” kind.

The son of a Rabbi, and the product of Jewish day school and Jewish summer camp, Jacob brings more than musicality to his work. His intimate knowledge of the Hebrew language, Jewish texts and culture add depth to his songs and authenticity to his role as a musical educator.

He’ll be joining us for a special ruach-filled Shabbat service on Friday, March 17. You can hear Jacob’s music anywhere music is streamed or sold, and find out more about Jacob and his music at www.jacobspikekraus.com.

Reid Flink will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on January 14, which also happens to be his 13th birthday! Reid is the son of Sheri and Andy Flink. He is a 7th grader at Crabapple Middle School, where he plays violin in the orchestra. Reid also loves to play piano, and can teach himself just about any instrument put in front of him. To say Reid is well versed in technology is an understatement: Apple and Microsoft come to him when they need help! For Reid's mitzvah project, he collected donations for Huskies Helping Huskies, a charity that supports needy families whose children attend Crabapple Middle School. Reid loves to spend time with his four older brothers, his Grandma and Grandpa, and especially his dogs, Zeus and Atlas, and his cat, Shadow. A huge thank you to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Cantor Kassel and Jay Weiner for getting us overthe finish line.

Taylor Cohen (daughter of Terri and Barry Steinberg) and David Michaeli were engaged on November 26 in Sedona, AZ. Taylor was recently graduated from Emory’s Nurse Practitioner program and David is an orthopedic surgery resident. The couple currently lives in Mobile, AL. A wedding is planned for October 21, 2023 in Atlanta.

Peter Klokow and Ellen Frank ended their 14-year engagement and were married at TBT on November 20, 2022. The ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Shuval Weiner and Cantor Kassel. Peter and Ellen have been part of the TBT family for ten years, and are regulars at Saturday morning Shabbat services. They also belong to a Chavurah, and participate in educational and social action programs.

Congregant Fran Jordan will be conducting a new class of Bridge Lessons for Beginners starting Tuesday, January 17 at her home in Peachtree Corners. This is also a good refresher class for those who haven’t played for a long time.

Class will meet once a week from 10:30-12:30 PM every Tuesday, for a total of 15 weeks. A donation to Temple Beth Tikvah of $72 per couple or $54 per person is suggested. NEW MEMBERS

Meet: Charlotte Milstein

I am really not a new member of Beth Tikvah. My husband and I joined in 2001, but after almost 17 years I had to resign. I am the mother of Michelle Missy” Stein. Both my grandchildren were Bar and Bat Mitzvah at Beth Tikvah, and I was one of three women to become Bat Mitzvah late in life, when Iwas 71 years old.

Turetsky

I live in Macon and have attended many High Holy Day services at TBT with my children: Manda and Sam, Charlie, 13, and Jonah, 11. I’m semiretired. I work for my sister at Carol’s Linens. After Charlie’s Bar Mitzvah, I became an associate member. Everyone at TBT is friendly, the Cantor is so welcoming and the Rabbi is amazing! I look forward to having more time so I can attend some of the many services and activities that TBT offers.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

Friends –

I am pleased to report our Double Chai Annual Campaign has raised $61,700 as of December 22, with 67 members participating. We are 51% to our goal of $120,000. Thank you to all who generously donated thus far! In addition, as Rabbi Shuval-Weiner noted in her column in this issue, we have met our goal for our special “OnBoard matching gift program” of $33,000, thanks to several very generous donors! (Complete list of OnBoard Donors in next issue.) Going forward, our primary need is the Campaign (with less need to direct donations specifically to OnBoard). As I’ve echoed in

the past, we are grateful for all our members’ commitments: from regular dues, security and other fees. So thank you again to everyone who has gone the extra mile for the Campaign and our special 2022-23 matching gift effort. It truly sustains us, and has enabled us to reach this day, and a very bright future.

Please consider a gift today to our Double Chai Campaign. Thank you, and have a happy and healthy 2023!
