MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Neighbors, As snow stakes line our driveways, patio furniture is being stowed away and we anxiously await the first snowfall, here’s some of what the board is working on: The 2024 Budget was approved on Oct. 20. Through thoughtful discussion and diligent deliberations over three intensive workshops plus the special meeting, the board, the committees and our staff worked together to trim an initial estimated increase of 14.6%, nearly four percentage points, to 10.7%, setting the 2024 assessment at $2,907. Work on the Amenity Access Policy Update continues. This is a major overhaul. Our most recent workshop addressed tenants, and next, we will address guests. You can provide input at the workshops, in evening member forums or online at tahoedonner.com. Watch your email for workshop and forum registration announcements. For the Recreation Pass, 2024 will be a transition year as we prepare to fully implement whatever the new Amenity Access Policy may be on January 1, 2025. As part of the transition year, the next Recreation Pass period will be May 1 through Dec. 31, 2024, when 80% of our private amenity access occurs. The recreation fee for this eight-month period is prorated accordingly: $250 for a 2-person pass and $410 for 4+ people. 2024 committee applications are now available. Information on the role of each active committee is available online at tahoedonner.com in the Members tab under the Committees + Clubs section. Serving on a committee is a great way to contribute to our community and have a seat at the table, participating in Tahoe Donner’s governance and contributing toward our community’s improvement.

The board received an update on the employee housing study and action plan at the Oct. 27 board meeting. Materials presented at the meeting and a video recording are available at tahoedonner.com in the Members tab under the Board section. The board has contracted with Wilcox Miller & Nelson (WMN) for General Manager recruitment services. In addition to successfully recruiting executive leaders for the City of Sacramento, Lake Wildwood Association, Chevron, California Children’s Hospital Association and dozens of others, WMN successfully recruited the last two Tahoe Donner General Managers in 2009 and 2020. Annie Rosenfeld is providing capable and steady leadership as Interim General Manager while the search is underway. In this month of Thanksgiving, we express our appreciation for the work of all our employees to ensure our recreational amenities and member services continue to operate well and that our capital projects and strategic initiatives move forward. Happy Thanksgiving! DON KOENES | BOARD PRESIDENT

Deck the Halls W ITH B OUG H S O F TA HOE

The Sierra Nevada is home to many magnificent species of coniferous trees, most commonly in the pine family. Their stature and varying display of needle-like leaves, bark and evergreen hues add distinct layers of beauty and texture to the surrounding landscape. When used as foliage in holiday-inspired crafts, pine boughs and cones can add a warm, rustic and quintessentially Tahoe feel to your home. Below is a list of common pine trees that can be found right in your backyard to help inspire your homemade holiday décor:

JEFFERY PINE

SUGAR PINE

MOUNTAIN HEMLOCK

The long three-needle clusters of the Jeffery pine create the appearance of bushy tufts. Use Jeffery pine boughs in floral arrangements or door swags to add whimsy and color. Jeffery pine cones are also impressive in their size and shape, resembling that of a pineapple. These oversized cones can be heavy, so they are not ideal for hanging overhead. Place them on the fireplace mantle instead for family and friends to admire.

Second only to the giant sequoias, sugar pines are the largest trees found in the Sierra Nevada. The name “sugar pine” comes from the sweet resin that oozes out around its wounds and fire scars. Similar to the Jeffery Pine, the Sugar Pine has long five-needle clusters. Hanging from its boughs are long, slender pine cones that can grow up to 18 inches in length. Collect fallen sugar pine cones to hang on a garland or place alongside your Jeffery pine cones on the mantle for varied heights and widths.

Considered one of the most beautiful trees in the forest, they are easily distinguishable by their drooping branches, bright green or blue-green bristly foliage, purplish female cones and tiny blueish male cones that create ornamental features along their branches. When flowering, mountain hemlock boughs are ideal for weaving into swags, wreathes and garlands or adding to centerpieces and table-top floral arrangements.

T SU GA M E RT E N S I AN A

WHITE FIR

RED FIR

Easily identifiable with their scaly pine cones and blue-silver-hued flat needles that extend from all sides of the branch and curve upward and outward, their uncommon color and pyramid shape make them ideal as ornamental plants and Christmas trees. Use the boughs for door swags during the holiday season, adorned with other types of pine boughs, cones, ribbons and more.

With needles that point upward along broad branches that are sparsely disturbed up the trunk, the delicate features of red firs make them the ideal Christmas trees to showcase hanging ornaments. Similar to white firs, red fir cones appear scaly in nature but are much larger (up to nine inches). Set on your fireplace mantle alongside your sugar and Jeffery pine cones to add additional variation to your display.

NATURAL MATERIALS, CRAFT STATIONS and more

When creating your holiday decor, consider incorporating other natural materials like

dried orange slices (see recipe on page 10), cinnamon sticks, hemp twine, beeswax candles and burlap ribbon to imbue an organic, farmhouse vibe. Work outside if the sun is out, or create a craft station on your kitchen table for the whole family to get in on the fun. Happy crafting!

Traditions IN THE K I TCH EN

Some of the most cherished and long-held holiday memories originate with sensory experiences in the kitchen. The aromas of soups and sauces simmering on the stove top, a turkey roasting in the oven, or the taste of your grandmother’s special hot chocolate. Below are several recipes for delightful drinks for adults and children that bring added warmth and cheer to your holiday gatherings, especially on those chilly Sierra Nevada nights.

MULLED WINE ING R ED IE N TS:

MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE

A good bottle of dry red wine (750 milliliters)

I NG RE D I E NTS:

1 orange, sliced into rounds, plus more for a garnish

with a twist

4 cups whole milk

6 whole cloves

2 bars of Ibarra Mexican chocolate, broken into chunks

3 cinnamon sticks, plus more for a garnish

1/4-cup cocoa powder

3-star anise

2 tablespoons of cane sugar 1/8- to 1/4-teaspoon cayenne pepper, season to taste

1/4-cup honey 1/2-cup brandy

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Serve warm and garnish with more orange slices and cinnamon sticks.

8 ounces of silver tequila Whipped cream, for a garnish Cinnamon and/or cinnamon sticks, for a garnish

Warm the milk in a mediumsized saucepan on medium heat. Once simmering, add the Ibarra chocolate, cocoa powder and sugar until completely dissolved, whisking lightly. Pour 8 ounces of warm hot chocolate into a mug and add 1½ to 2 ounces of tequila. Top with whipped cream, sprinkle with cinnamon and cocoa powder, or add cinnamon sticks for garnish. For a children’s version, simply omit tequila and cayenne.

SLOW COOKER SPICED CIDER I N GR E DIE N T S : 1 gallon of apple cider (not apple juice, which is filtered and sweetened) 1 medium-sized orange, sliced into rounds 1 ounce of fresh ginger, sliced 4 to 5 cinnamon sticks, or 1 tablespoon of cinnamon 1 tablespoon whole cloves 1 teaspoon of nutmeg

Pour all ingredients into a slow cooker with setting on low, cover and cook for four hours to allow flavors to fully meld. Serve warm with orange slices, cinnamon sticks and whipping cream for garnish. Add brandy for a hot toddy!

DRIED ORANGE SLICES

During the holiday season, dried orange slices can have a number of creative uses, from aromatics and decor to garnish in drinks, dishes and more. Easy to make with a conventional oven, you’ll have fun using dried orange slices for an elegant and decorative touch throughout the holidays. Use a variety of citrus for variation in size and color, including navel oranges, blood oranges and tangerines. Preheat oven to 175°F. Slice oranges into 1/8- to 1/4-inch rounds. Lay flat in a single layer with 1/2-inch spacing on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Pat dry. Cook for 4-6 hours, until slices are completely dry. Let cool completely before using. Store in an air-tight container for up to one month.

Winter is Coming. Are you Ready for it?

With the weather showing signs of winter’s inevitable arrival, now is the time to protect your home and family when temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall By CYNTHIA CENDREDA The mountains offer a unique lifestyle with stunning backdrops, endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, a laid-back pace and an abundance of alpine charm. However, high-elevation living also comes with challenges and risks that require proper due diligence to minimize. From weatherproofing tips and community resources to emergency planning and preparedness, below are some recommendations for winterizing that will help keep you and your loved ones safe and comfortable this season.

HOME WEATHERIZING + WINTER PREPAREDNESS Weatherizing, or weatherproofing, is the process of protecting your home against the elements, including moisture, cold air, snow and ice. These steps may include upgrading insulation, replacing HVAC air filters, applying or replacing weather stripping to doors and windows and more. Weatherizing ensures that your home energy sources run as efficiently as possible while keeping you safe and comfortable throughout the winter months.

RESOURCES, REBATES + SAFETY

WINTER WEATHER HOME CHECKLIST

In partnership with the Truckee Donner Public Utilities District (TDPUD), the Town of Truckee offers rebates for most measures taken to help residents weatherproof their homes, which aligns with the Town Council’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support community resilience and disaster preparedness. The Town encourages all residents to explore these rebates regardless of their home heating source. Visit tdpud.org to learn more.

Lastly, fall is the ideal time to assess your home and family for additional winter preparation, including:

Additional safety measures should also be taken to minimize any exposure to harmful gases or other hazards from home heating systems, including replacing batteries in smoke detectors and having chimneys swept. To learn more about how to maintain your smoke detectors, visit truckeefire.org/smoke-detectors.

Renewing your snowplow service Stocking up on firewood, batteries and ice melt Insulating and protecting pipes to prevent freezing and cracking, especially for second homeowners Refilling propane tanks Considering the installation of alternative energy sources like backup generators and battery packs should your gas run out or if there is a power outage Establishing a winter emergency preparedness plan and reviewing it with your family

WINTERIZING YOUR VEHICLES

SAFE RECREATION + ENJOYMENT

In addition to weatherproofing your home, additional measures should be taken to ensure your vehicle’s safety well ahead of when winter road conditions become hazardous:

The winter season offers various opportunities for recreation and enjoyment, but safety should always be your first priority. From dressing appropriately for the elements and protecting your body to educating yourself on the risks of winter activities, advanced preparation can help ensure that your adventure-filled winter is a safe one too. When heading out:

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR AUTO MECHANIC

Inspect your heating and cooling systems, 4WD/AWD systems, fluid levels and other parts, including car batteries, filters, brakes, belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires and cables.

SWITCH TO WINTER TIRES

Tires should be rated for snow and ice for maximum performance and handling.

KEEP YOUR CAR CLEAR OF SNOW

Remove snow from the top of your car to prevent a slide onto your windshield and install heavy winter windshield wipers for use when driving.

KEEP SNOW REMOVAL TOOLS IN THE CAR

• Dress in insulating and quick-drying layers made from materials like wool, silk, bamboo or synthetic fibers • Make sure your outwear is windproof and water resistant with proper ventilation to regulate body heat • Review rules and regulations for downhill and cross country skiing, including skier/rider responsibility, chair lift safety, terrain park safety, helmet usage and more at skicalifornia.org • Sign up for a lesson or clinic to build foundational skills and to learn how to control your speed when skiing or riding; find lessons and other programs at tahoedonner.com/downhill or tahoedonner.com/xc • Always stay within bounds at Tahoe Donner ski areas • Only sled or play in areas designated for this type of winter recreation to avoid accidents or injuries • Drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen regularly

Top left photo submitted by Margery Tonna; bottom right photo submitted by Sandy Walsh.

Tools include a shovel, snow brush, ice scraper, traction pads and gloves in the event you need to dig yourself out.

PRACTICE WINTER DRIVING SKILLS

Don’t speed, give yourself plenty of time to slow down, obey all traffic advisories and warnings and avoid distractions while driving.

PACK A ROADSIDE EMERGENCY KIT

Include jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, blankets, bottled water and non-perishable snacks, high-visibility vest, flares or triangle reflectors, first aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, cell phone and charger. Lastly, stay updated on weather and road conditions in your area or the area you plan to travel to before you leave the house. Visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for the latest information or download the Caltrans app to your mobile phone. Be prepared for delays, detours and other hazards in inclement weather and plan accordingly.

THE

BUZZ: CLUBS 4-WHEELERS CLUB

QUILT CLUB

WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB

The fall colors are here. It’s time to take a walk through nature and be inspired! Our group recently made 50 small pillows for our local Cancer Treatment Center; they aim to make the patients more comfortable after surgery or during Chemo. This is one of our ongoing projects and efforts to do something positive for our community.

Congratulations to Martha Gilbertson for winning the 2023 President’s Cup! The President’s Cup is a match-play tournament where competitors are grouped into flights of five players. Each golfer plays the others in their flight in a game of match play, accumulating one point for winning a hole and ½ point for a tie. This year, we had 15 competitors in three flights, and Martha scored the most points over the field. Other winners included:

The TD4WD Club had an epic fall adventure to Moab, Utah and Ouray, Colorado. We joined the Red Rock 4Wheelers Fall Campout with runs to Poison Spyder, Backwards Bill and Jax Trax in the always scenic Red Rock region. Then we continued to Ouray, Colorado, where we helped with the rescue of an injured quad rider on the Poughkeepsie Gulch’s notorious wall area. Luckily, he was okay after being airlifted out with a subsequent hip reduction. Roger Stein and Tim West helped get the quads out to the trailer.

Flight 1

• First Place: Karen Grote

• Second Place: Diane Kalliam Flight 2

• First Place: Lisa Foster

• Second Place: Janet Keeter Flight 3

• First Place: Patty Giuntoli

• Second Place: Bettee Palmer The veteran’s projects also continue, and we are moving ever closer to completion. It’s exciting to see what was donated or made by members of our group. We hope to deliver the items around Veteran’s Day as a thank you to those who put their lives at risk to preserve our freedom.

From left: Patty Giuntoli, Janet Keeter, Martha Gilbertson, Bettee Palmer

KATEY HAMILL

And congratulations to Carolyn Rose for scoring a hole-in-one on #7 on Sept. 5!

We crossed numerous high passes, including Imogene, California, Engineer, Ophir and others. The views are breathtaking (or maybe that’s just the 13,000 feet elevation). We also explored the historic Tomboy mining sites above Telluride. Everyone worked as a team and had a great time, although we’ve all had enough narrow shelf roads. Thanks to Tim West for planning and leading our adventure! Visit TD4Wheelers.org to learn more or join the club.

If you would like to learn more about the Tahoe Donner Quilt Club and what we do, please contact odette.turmel@gmail.com. Fabric lovers of all levels are welcome. We meet at Pizza on the Hill on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Starting in November, our winter hours are from 1-3PM.

For more information about the Women’s Golf Club, email tdwgclub@gmail.com.

KARATE CLUB

Recently, Sanna Schlosser was awarded a brown belt and has earned the title of “Senpai,” which means “senior student.” Fletcher Knipe was also awarded a purple belt. The Tahoe Donner Karate Club was started in February of 2022 by Sensei Suz Field, a fifth-degree black belt. Members are encouraged to participate at their own pace to achieve personalized goals. The IKL martial arts style improves physical fitness, balance, strength and flexibility while students learn self-defense. The club also provides opportunities for participation in karate tournaments competing in kata and kumite events. Club members are currently of various ranks, ages and abilities. The TD Karate Club meets twice a week all year long. The club will begin accepting new members annually in January, February and March. Location: Trout Creek Rec Center

Days: Thursdays and/or Saturdays

Times: 4-6PM (beginners dismissed at 5PM)

Costs: $50 annual club fee plus paid Rec Fee or Daily Access Fee; parent(s) who participate with a child are free Eligibility: Ages 8+

To Join: Contact Suz Field Sensei at IKLdojo.TD@gmail.com to observe or participate in classes prior to joining the club

AMERICAN MAH JONGG CLUB Amid a chorus of cheers, Joan Bush (right) won her very first Mah Jongg hand at a recent American Mah Jongg Club meeting! Joan, a full-time Tahoe Donner resident, is a newer player with only about six weeks of experience. Joan was introduced to the game by her good friend and neighbor, Barbara Patterson. Joan says the most challenging part of the game is selecting the hand based on the tiles dealt, and the most fun part is winning! She thanks the American Mah Jongg Club for being so welcoming to new players.

lbslattery@yahoo.com or Dori Schick at doridans@hotmail.com.

The club meets every Tuesday at Pizza on the Hill from 12-3PM. We play American Mah Jongg using the current year’s National Mah Jongg League card and rules. No RSVP needed! For more information about the Mah Jongg Club, contact Linda Slattery at

SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB The big question looming is what kind of a winter Mother Nature will bestow on us this year. Our previous ski season was one of the longest on record, and our members enjoyed over seven months of EPIC skiing and so many fun social events. Although summer was a little shorter, we made the most of it with a bike ride, kayaking, BBQ and a bocce ball party. We are busy planning our activities for this coming winter. Club members can participate in twice-weekly ski conditioning

classes at Trout Creek Center to get a jump on another fabulous ski season. Our annual Winterfest party is planned for Nov. 28 at the Alder Creek Adventure Center and will feature a potluck dinner and gift exchange. We hope to be skiing by early to midDecember with club ski days at Northstar, Palisades and Alpine Meadows. Our first après ski social is planned for Dec. 19 at Zanos. Visit our website at tdski.com for more information about our very active group!

MEN’S GOLF CLUB The first weekend in September after Labor Day is always reserved for the annual TDMGC Invitational Tournament. This is a chance for our members to share the experience of TD Golf with their guests. We had glorious latesummer Sierra weather for this fun weekend featuring all things golf. The course was in superb condition thanks to Sam Rena, with the greens running firm, fast, and true. Over 60 TDMGC members and their guests enjoyed two days of golf, pitch and putt contests, a hole-in-one challenge and the always exciting horserace. The weekend concluded with the Invitational Banquet at the newly renovated Pavilion.

The new fire pits at the Pavilion were a popular spot as the late evening chill settled in. For more information about the Men’s Golf Club and how to establish membership, visit tdgolfclub.com or contact Membership Chair Michael O’Connell at oconnell.tdgolf@gmail.com.

HOW ONE DAY MAKES A DIFFERENCE GIVING TUESDAY IS NOVEMBER 28 By DIANE CAMPBELL, Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee Member

One day can make a life-changing difference, whether it’s the one-day worldwide phenomenon of Giving Tuesday or the one day a student is awarded a scholarship that changes their life and that of the family.

LET’S GIVE YOUR DONATIONS MADE A LIFETOGETHER TO OUR CHANGING DIFFERENCE LOCAL COMMUNITY One particular day in May of 2020, Luis Giving Tuesday follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday with a radical day of online giving that brings together communities worldwide. Our community at Tahoe Donner supports scholarships for local students and funds grants to help local nonprofits. This year, the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee is pleased to give you a great reason to be generous. For every $100 you donate on Nov. 28 at givingfund.tahoedonner.com/ GivingTuesday2023, your donation earns one entry to opt-in to a drawing for a ride-along in a Tahoe Donner snowcat and an opportunity to learn from the pros about trail grooming at the Downhill Ski Resort or Cross Country Ski Center. This prize drawing is good for one rider 18 years or older. Depending on the conditions, the ride will last one to two hours. For details, see tahoedonner.com/giving-fund. There is no obligation to participate in the Snowcat incentive when you donate $100 or more.

awoke to find that he was the recipient of a Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Impact Scholarship. From that day forward, Luis’ life was changed forever. He enrolled in UC Irvine as a freshman and will proudly graduate in the upcoming spring of 2024.

Luis rode through the turmoil of the pandemic but spent his freshman year studying online at home in Truckee and working a night job at Panda Express. He admits that he felt lonely and isolated during that time. He moved to Irvine the following year and has successfully forged ahead with enthusiasm and gratitude ever since. UC Irvine has awakened Luis to three passions! His main area of study has been criminology, and he has law school ambitions on his radar. He would like to become an “exoneration” lawyer to help those, especially minorities, who have been wrongly accused and imprisoned. He has also studied education and continues to give back to his hometown by teaching at Tahoe/Truckee Unified School District’s Aim High summer programs.

Luis, third from left, stands with other Tahoe Donner Giving Fund IMPACT Scholars.

And Luis’ third passion? DANCE! Luis joined UC Irvine’s Ballet Folklorico, which celebrates and performs music and dance from various regions of Mexico, like Sinaloa and Veracruz. This year, he was nominated to a leadership position and now holds the impressive title of Wardrobe Coordinator. Luis thanks the TDGF for its tremendous generosity. Because of the scholarship, Luis can focus all his energy on his academic life without the burden of family financial woes. He proudly told me that he has grown independent and responsible as a result of his UC Irvine experiences.

The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee is chartered by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors to administer the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund, an affiliate fund of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

organization, tax #68-0416404. All contributions are voluntary and are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Tahoe

Donner Giving Fund grants and scholarships are made through the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s annual review process. For more information, visit tahoedonner.com/giving-fund.

Thank you to all donors and to our founding partner, Elements Mountain Company, for their continued support

since the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund was founded in 2014, as well as to our anonymous donor who generously funds

Let’s give together to help more students and nonprofits and (ahem) earn more chances to ride on that snowcat!

the IMPACT Scholarships each year.

JO I N DA RK SKIES M OV EM ENT Help the Stars Shine Brighter in Truckee by Turning Off Your Lights at Night! By CYNTHIA CENDREDA

Did you know that prolonged exposure to artificial lights can be harmful to humans and the environment? Brighter residential nighttime lighting is associated with reduced sleep times and quality of sleep, impaired daytime functioning and obesity. Light pollution is also disruptive to the area’s ecosystems: Birds may not be able to navigate effectively using stars during migration seasons, predators cannot properly hunt in brightly lit areas and insects are fatally attracted to artificial light sources.

E X CE S S IVE L IGHTING IS WASTE FU L Over the past 12 years, sky brightness in the U.S. has increased 9.6% annually due to artificial lighting at night. Studies show that thirty percent of nighttime lighting isn’t shielded, costing an average of $3.3 billion, emitting 21 million tons of carbon dioxide and requiring the planting of 875 million trees each year to offset the impacts. Wasting energy has huge economic and environmental consequences.

LI GH T IN G M AT T E R S By joining the Dark Skies movement, you can help restore the nighttime environment and protect communities and wildlife from the harmful effects of artificial light. Simple acts like the ones listed below can ensure that lighting pollution is significantly reduced:

Turn off exterior lights by 10PM, including holiday lights

Turn off interior lights when you’re not using them

Implement dark-sky-friendly exterior lighting that points downward rather than upward or in multiple directions

Use motion sensor lights where safety is a concern

Spread the word – encourage your neighbors to follow these guidelines

To learn more about the Dark Skies movement and how you can help maintain the beauty of Truckee’s nighttime sky, visit darkskies.org.
