WELCOME I am delighted that you are considering coming to study A-Levels with us. This is the start of a very special educational journey for you and we will be here for you every step of the way. If you choose to join us, you will be doing so at a very exciting time, with educational watchdog Ofsted grading us ‘Good with Outstanding features’ early in 2014. Hastings train station is next door to our campus. There are regular trains from all across Sussex throughout the day.

Hastings bus station is also next door to our campus with regular buses coming from Bexhill, Hastings and Rother area throughout the day.

There is no on-site parking at the campus but there are plenty of pay-and-display areas on nearby streets, in Priory Meadow and at the train station.

THE CAMPUS STATION PLAZA Sussex Coast College’s main campus is based next to the train station in Hastings town centre. Courses located here include A-Levels, Art, Business, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Sport, Public Services, Health, Child and Social Care and Foundation Learning. The Sixth Form is based at Station Plaza and boasts outstanding facilities to supplement the A-Level provision. The 3rd floor is an A-Level hub, providing amazing teaching spaces for our A-Level/ BTEC courses, creating a collegiate and mature learning environment. Our grade 1 teaching and learning in Science is delivered in the outstanding Science laboratories that we have at our disposal.

The large, light-filled atrium is the core of student social life, surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones, often hosting presentations and student related activities. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, a gym, exhibition areas, Coast Coffee, Dine, Subway, a training kitchen, a professional salon, Coast Restaurant and a large Learning Resource Centre. All of which are fully accessible to our Sixth Form students.

Our sport-based courses utilise the outstanding facilities available at Horntye sports complex with practical elements of the A-Level and BTEC PE provision also delivered there.

SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIP As part of our drive to improve the progression of young people into Higher Education in Hastings and Rother the Sixth Form is now offering academic scholarships of £1000 to learners who demonstrate academic potential and outstanding results from 2015/16 onwards. In order to qualify for the scholarship you must meet the following criteria: • • • •

Achieve a 90% average attendance over the first year Achieve A to C grades in all your AS examinations Be applying to University or an Apprenticeship upon completion of the course Have a household income of below £50,000 per year

The scholarship should be used for academic purposes, whether supporting oneself through college or using the money to buy materials for University. Once enrolled for academic year 15/16 any learner that meets the above criteria will be entered into a draw whereupon a selection will be made.

ENRICHMENT As a student at the college you will have the opportunity to engage in a number of enrichment activities to broaden your horizons and offer you the opportunity to discover new interests. Over the course of the year, the Sixth Form will be running trips as part of a wider activity of enrichment. For example, trips to see Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX stadium, opportunities to experience West End productions in London as well as opportunities to enrich your subject knowledge through academically related visits including Business/Economics trips to the continent and Government and Politics trips to the Houses of Parliament. The Villiers Park Scholars Programme The Sixth Form participates in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme. Existing Villiers Park Scholars will have mentoring sessions. If spaces become available at the beginning of the academic year, additional Year 12 scholars from the Sixth Form may be selected. Get Active The Get Active programme offers a wide variety of sport, health and dance activities for students of all ages. As part of the get active programme, students at the Sixth Form can involve themselves in a variety of sporting activities, whether this partaking in exercise in the gym, or joining the college football team. The variety of activities on offer is vast. This year we have introduced Yoga, Zumba and Combat Conditioning to our offer of activities and they have proved very popular. Want to find out more? WE SUPPORT YOU TO SUCCESS Tutorial system A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we appreciate that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When enrolled at the Sixth Form, you will be assigned a tutor to support you through your studies. The tutor assigned to you will be aligned with your academic programme, and will therefore be able support you through your studies.

Additional Learning Support At college, our Additional Learning Support team can help give you the best chance of success. We recognise that each student has very different needs and will provide you with the support and encouragement that you require. Our experienced team will work with you to help remove obstacles that prevent you from learning and to ensure a positive outcome - just come and talk to us about any learning needs you may have.

Academic support At the Sixth Form we provide academic support in the form of study workshops. These enable learners to focus on developing their skills and knowledge in a specific subject area. The workshops tend to be allocated in free periods during the week so that all learners are able to attend.

ENHANCED A-LEVEL PROGRAMME The Sixth Form at Sussex Coast College Hastings offers learners who are ambitious the unique opportunity to study the enhanced A-Level. We have designed this programme for learners who wish to pursue a University place at Oxford, Cambridge or other similarly prestigious institutions. As part of the Enhanced A-Level Programme you will study: • 4 A-Levels • Theory of Knowledge - A study of how we know what we know. A critical approach to methods of knowledge acquisition with an aim of enhancing skills of critical analysis • Community Actions Service - An opportunity for learners to volunteer and participate within the local community in a specific area of interest • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - Learners will be able to complete an extended project on a specific subject of interest

This programme is extremely challenging and enables learners to develop skills in a variety of areas, and to demonstrate to Universities that they have developed a wide array of skills. These skills will provide an advantage when applying to competitive institutions.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Ultimately, the end goal for any learner is to achieve secure and enjoyable employment. As part of your offer you will have the opportunity to engage in Career Development Programme in your first year of A-Level study. Our Career Development Programme ensures that as well as developing academic excellence you are also developing the soft skills required for the labour market. These skills will also place you in good stead when it comes to applying for and exceeding in Higher Education. The aim of career development is to enable you to make informed decisions about you next steps in regard to either Higher Education or employment and training. The Sixth Form has established contacts with a multitude of employers, from a variety of backgrounds. Learners can opt to take part in placements within a firm in an industry that may interest them. We have opportunities ranging from working in the creative industries here in Hastings, to working in finance in the City of London.

UCAS After accessing the opportunities offered in the Career Development Programme during your first year, you will start to have an idea of the type of University degree that you wish to apply for. From the end of the first year you will be supported through your UCAS application by your personal tutor, who is your subject specialist assigned to you. Through our links with the University of Brighton and Compact (a scheme run by Brighton University to increase participation) you will receive expert support on how to complete your application and also receive information in regard to other pertinent questions on topics such as student finance and bursary applications.

You’ve lived for sixteen years. Now it is time to examine how. If you have questioned what it is to be a human or even what humanity itself entails, Anthropology A-Level is the course for you. Across two years we shall examine life’s important questions: Where did humans come from? How do they organise social relations with each other? How do they engage with their various environments and what importance does this engagement have in shaping what it is to be human? Business covers all aspects of business organisations. We will show you how businesses tackle a range of issues such as marketing, entrepreneurial skills, and business objectives.

Students will be introduced to a range of ceramic process including clay modelling, glazes, ceramic forms and sculpture. Drawing and life drawing will be an essential part of the course.

We will also consider how businesses motivate their workforce and how a business is financed. You will gain knowledge of businesses from topical case studies relating to the corporate world.

You currently live within civilisation 2.0. Have you ever wondered what came before from which our current world rose like the phoenix from the ashes?

Are you an aspiring lawyer, teacher or actor? This course is suitable for students who are wanting to learn valuable skills, including analytical skills, empathy and confidence. The course is both a practical and theoretical look at drama, including the study of influential theatre practitioners and playwrights.

By studying the main social, political and literary works of the classical era you will delve into the inner workings of people at the dawn of civilisation.

CHARLOTTE HUNTER STUDENT Charlotte Hunter went to St Leonards Academy before applying to SCCH. Last year she studied AS English Literature/Language, History and Politics. Charlotte attained 100% in her AS Politics exam. This year she has taken on AS Classical Civilisation and applied to study English Literature/Language at Oxford University in September, she aspires to become a diplomat.

Tutors at SCCH speak to you like an adult, as well as being on your level. A lot of the learning is independent and self-led but the support is always there when you need it. The lessons are well planned with learning objectives made clear and met. I enjoy college so much more than school.

TILLY JONES STUDENT Tilly Jones went to Robertsbridge Community College and is now studying 4 A-Level subjects at SCCH. She is currently working towards AS Anthropology, Art, English Literature and Biology and plans to study Anthropology at Oxford, York or Edinburgh Universities after completing her education here.

• Development and globalisation The atmosphere at SCCH is great, the course choice is broad and the options to study the combinations of A-Levels I looked into were not offered at any other college. The college has really exceeded my expectations; the teachers are amazing and very committed to our success. We get so much more freedom here; the environment is very different from school and we are treated like adults.

Politics is an essential part of our lives and shapes the way our society operates. Parliament makes laws that influence everything we do and political ideology and debate is at the heart of this legislative process. Every major event in history has been influenced by politics, from the Welfare State to the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

A thorough introduction to the subject of graphic design. You will develop an understanding of the principles of graphic design and its impact and relevance to our culture and industry.

The new History A-Level focuses in the first year on how the revolutions of England, in the 17th century, and France, in the 18th century, differ. Both involve the execution of their monarch, however one will give rise to parliamentary democracy, while the other is the dawning of the modern age.

In the 2nd year you will explore the nature of the witch craze that took hold in the late 16th century and the changing attitudes to magic and sorcery that eventually contributed to its decline. You will study the social, economic, political and dimensions of the phenomenon, and the intellectual changes of what is often called the Age of Reason. Alternatively, you will study how the mass media developed from the end of the 19th century to the first years of the 21st century, alongside the changes within the family as women’s roles and family leisure opportunities changed. Whilst mainly exploring social and cultural issues, students also explore the impact of key political events and legislation. We are constantly bombarded by the media, consciously and subconsciously. This course is designed to develop your interest in the world of media, to explore why texts are made a certain way and targeted through their mode of address.

Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, inside us and beyond us. Physicists are fascinated by how things work in every detail and at the deepest level, analysing everything from elementary particles and living cells to solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, complex systems, the human brain, planets, supercomputers, the atmosphere, stars, galaxies and the universe itself.

In the first year you will: • Explore a cross section of media texts, seeing how they communicate their meanings • Explore the media’s ever- changing role in society through gender, ethnicity, issues and places and analysing them through applying audience theories

Physics underpins recent technological developments that have revolutionised our world, such as mobile phones, lasers, the Internet and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). A-Level Physics will enable you to study physical theory while remaining mindful of the ‘reallife’ context for each area of study. You will also develop practical and investigative skills and compare these to how scientists work in current research contexts.


NEW - PHILOSOPHY Course code: 1102

This course focuses on the deeper questions of human existence. As a learner on this programme you will focus on questions such as ‘how do we know that God exists?’ and ‘are the mind and body separate?’ Specifically, the focus of the AS Level is to develop a sound understanding of the way human beings perceive the reality around them. At A2, the focus moves onto the philosophy of ethics, with the attention primarily on philosophers such as Kant, Mill and Bentham. The A2 is more conceptual than the AS and enables learners to start to develop an understanding of the way we think as individuals within a framework. Towards the end of the A2 course learners will start to question the way we behave as individuals, with a strong focus on deconstructing logic and knowledge (ways of knowing). The programme is taught over three lessons a week for the entirety of the academic year and is highly sought after by elite Higher Education institutions as one of the most challenging A-Levels that a learner could undertake. As a student of Philosophy you will gain an insight into: • The human condition and how we perceive the world around us • Religion and the role that it plays in our society • Critical perspectives on commonly held assumptions in our society • Enlightenment thinking and how philosophers of the enlightenment period broke down the barriers of medieval society Given the highly analytical nature of Philosophy it lends itself to a number of career paths: • Education careers, primarily in Higher Education as an academic or as a lecturer at A-Level • Journalism • Analytical work in financial markets • Politics at a local or national level

In the field of Art and Design, Adobe Photoshop is a well-regarded qualification that will enhance employability. This program is embedded into our A-Level Art and Design Photography programme, and provision falls within the allotted three timetabled lessons per week. For a vast majority of the British population, sport is an integral part of their lives. Whether this be attending the gym or partaking in amateur club sports teams at the weekend. This A-Level enables learners to pursue the study of sport to an advanced level.

The course is split between practical and theoretical components. The practical element requires learners to perform to a good standard in two selected sports, whether this be playing, coaching, or officiating, and then evaluate how they could improve their performance through a theoretical intervention. The theory element of the course focuses on anatomy and physiology, sport psychology and socio-cultural studies. A greater depth of these areas is assessed in the second year. The provision is split between SCCH (theoretical elements), our fantastic on-site Plaza gym (fitness elements), and Horntye Park Sports Complex (practical sessions). Forensic Science is simply the application of science to the law.

This two-year course will provide you with advanced skills and knowledge to prepare you to work within many sectors of the sports industry, and prepare you to progress to Higher Education. In year one you will complete the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport before progressing to the Subsidiary Diploma in the second year.

In criminal cases, forensic scientists are often involved in the search for and examination of physical traces that might be useful for establishing or excluding an association between someone suspected of committing a crime and the scene of the crime or victim. This course provides a foundation for those wishing to progress to a career in laboratory science. It aims to develop an appreciation of the competencies, skills and knowledge required for Higher Education and employment in science-based careers. The course comprises six mandatory and six optional modules. These may include: • Fundamentals of Science • Science practical techniques • Forensic evidence collection and analysis • Criminal investigation procedures • Forensic fire investigation • Forensic psychology

WORLD DEVELOPMENT Course code: 1102

This course is designed for those with an interest in textiles, surfaces and materials. You will learn basic elements of art and design and how to apply them to your textile work by studying how other textile artists apply these to their creative work.

Sociology gives you the opportunity to step outside the box in which you have been placed by your gender, class, education, ethnicity and age. Sociology enables you to understand the labels other people, groups and organisations may have given you. Sociology provides you with the evidence and skills to challenge these labels and examine society itself.

World development is a multidisciplinary branch of social science which places a particular focus on issues related to social and economic development, and its relevance extends to communities and regions outside of the developing world.

You will learn a range of traditional and contemporary textile techniques and materials, such as: • Felt making • Surface pattern • Fabric manipulation • Hand and machine embroidery You will create your own work from initial ideas through to final outcomes and learn how to present them to achieve their maximum visual impact. You will produce a coursework portfolio and your response to an externally set assignment. These will contain personal research and development, using the mark making and textile techniques taught throughout the course. Progression on to the A2 year will give you the skills to design original textile work of your own, by combining a range of textile techniques and materials.

INTERVIEWS If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to attend an interview. The sooner you return your completed form, the sooner you will receive an interview as a general rule. We will be holding interview evenings in January, February and March 2015. Please bring your progress file and latest school report with you to your interview. For art courses you will also need to bring a portfolio of your work. The interview and a presentation about your subject will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

At the end of your interview you will receive a written offer confirming what was discussed, including confirmation of any exam grades (or other requirements) you need to achieve to take up the place. If you decide to accept your place, we will continue to send you information about starting college.

ENROLMENT After your GCSE exam results in August you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become a Sussex Coast College student! You will need to bring your exam results, and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when, where and how you start your course.

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the level of the programme.
