I am delighted that you are considering coming to study with us. This is the start of a very special educational journey for you and we will be here for you every step of the way. At Sussex Coast College Hastings, we know how important it is for you to be a part of your child’s future. Therefore, we have put together this frequently asked questions page for you to ensure a smooth transition from school to college. What is Further Education (FE)? FE covers a wide range of education which goes beyond what has been achieved in primary and secondary education. Typically, FE includes: A-Levels, Apprenticeships, Vocational qualifications, Foundation Learning and provides the foundation to higher education including Degrees and Higher Apprenticeships.

Which qualification is right for my son/daughter? There are lots of qualifications to choose from at Sussex Coast College Hastings, and knowing which one is right can be a tricky decision. We have a dedicated team to help you with this choice and to discuss the options available to you. For more information, call 01424 458475, email info@sussexcoast.ac.uk or drop in to see us.

Can I visit the college before my son/daughter applies? We have open events throughout the year for you to find out what our college has to offer. These events give you the opportunity to look around the campuses, see the facilities, meet the tutors, and talk to students who are currently studying at the college. You can find these dates on page 3.

How does my son/daughter apply to college?

How will I be involved in my son/ daughter’s college life?

Your child can apply for up to two courses and have more than one interview. The most important thing is that your child enrols on to the course that is right for them.

You will be kept informed of your child’s progress through regular parent consultation evenings. We also host a Parents’ Voice session where you will be invited to give us your views on all aspects of college life. You can also contact tutors directly to discuss any issues during term time.

Although it helps to have the application in early, remember that it’s never too late to apply.

What happens at the start of college? Our induction days provide a further opportunity for students to have a successful transition from school to college life. Students are provided with the opportunity to tour the college building, become aware of staff that are available to help support their studies, and see the facilities that the college provides.

Is there any support available for my son/daughter? At Sussex Coast College Hastings we take supporting your child very seriously. There are specialist Additional Learning Support teams who work closely with students. There are also youth workers and trained professionals for students to discuss any personal matters with. Your child will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be the key point of contact for both you and them as they progress on their journey with the college. We also offer financial support and a variety of bursaries to support students to get to college and provides the funds for materials and resources needed to succeed once they are here.

Our grade 1 teaching and learning in Science is delivered in the outstanding science laboratories that we have at our disposal. Our sport-based courses utilise the outstanding facilities available at Horntye sports complex with practical elements of the A-Level and BTEC PE provision also delivered there.

Both Station Plaza and Ore Valley offer stateof-the-art equipment in their spacious LRCs. Trained staff offer help with proof-reading, presentation preparation, research and writing

Based at Station Plaza, the art shop stocks a wide range of materials including books, canvases, paper and pens. It also provides a bespoke framing service where students receive a 10% discount.

We have over 1,300 macs, pcs and laptops for student use. The college is fully networked, with high-speed intranet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout both campuses. Students can access their college email and shared area from home, through the college website.

College is a very different environment from school. You will be treated like an adult and prepared for your next step, whether that is university or your chosen career. We have a dedicated Student Support Team to guide you through college life and enrich your college experience.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Over the course of the year, the Sixth Form will be running trips as part of a wider activity of enrichment. For example, trips to see Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX stadium, opportunities to experience West End productions in London as well as opportunities to enrich your subject knowledge through academically related visits including, Business/Economics trips to the continent and Government and Politics trips to the Houses of Parliament.

THE VILLIERS PARK SCHOLARS PROGRAMME

It doesn’t stop with taking part; we help students get qualified on National Governing Body coaching schemes, to further enhance their employability prospects within the sporting/health world. Whatever your goals, the Get Active Programme will help you achieve them.

WIDER ENRICHMENT

A wider enrichment programme is available in the Sixth Form whereby learners can engage in specific areas of interest. Staff take on responsibility for certain enrichment activities and these include Model United Nations, Stocks and Shares Club, as well as a debating society.

The Sixth Form participates in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme. Existing Villiers Park Scholars will have mentoring sessions. If spaces become available at the beginning of the academic year, additional Year 12 scholars from the Sixth Form may be selected.

The Get Active Programme offers a wide variety of sport, health and dance activities for students of all ages. All activities are free of charge, and will include football, golf, Zumba, swimming, led walks, yoga, tennis and many more. We also have strong links with the local community, so if there is anything you want to have a go at, we will find you the opportunity.

Do you want to represent your fellow classmates? Then why not become a student representative; This is your chance to make changes to your course and College.

Students can apply to become an SCCH ambassador. The role has different responsibilities but can include speaking at school assemblies, supporting at College events and undertaking surveys and feedback sessions.

Ultimately, the end goal for any learner is to secure an enjoyable employment. As part of your offer, you will have the opportunity to engage our Career Development Programme in your first year of A-Level study.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Our Career Development Programme ensures that as well as developing academic excellence; you are also developing the soft skills required for the labour market. These skills will also place you in good stead when it comes to applying for and exceeding in higher education. The aim of career development is to enable you to make informed decisions about your next steps in regard to either higher education or employment and training. The Sixth Form has established contacts with a multitude of employers, from a variety of backgrounds. Learners can opt to take part in placements within a firm in an industry that may interest them. We have opportunities ranging from working in the creative industries here in Hastings, to working in finance in the City of London.

UCAS APPLICATION

After accessing the opportunities offered in the Career Development Programme during your first year, you will start to have an idea of the type of university Degree that you wish to apply for. From the end of the first year you will be supported through your UCAS application by your personal tutor, who is your subject specialist assigned to you. Through our links with the University of Brighton and Compact (a scheme run by Brighton University to increase participation) you will receive expert support on how to complete your application and also receive information in regard to other pertinent questions on topics such as student finance and bursary applications.


THE

PARK

The Source Park is a giant new skate park, retail store and café under Hastings beach that is the largest underground BMX and skate park in the world! The Source has teamed up with Sussex Coast College Hastings to provide young people with work experience opportunities in fields of service, tourism, graphic design, media and sports development. They will also be creating full and part time jobs in the town; many of which will be offered to young people. The Source began life in a small shop in 2003 and has grown every year since in to the market leaders in Europe. Still owned and run by the founders, they are committed to offering extensive work experience opportunities to Sussex Coast College students first. As the UK’s leading BMX and skateboard retailer with dozens of employees in Hastings, the company can offer interesting roles in retail, customer service, e-commerce, hospitality and event organisation. The company also works closely with Sussex Coast College on art installations on the walls of their unique building. The giant new skate park is a £1.4m project involving the conversion of a giant underground space that was built by the Victorians in the 1880’s as Turkish baths, and later used as a swimming pool and ice rink before falling into ruin. The building lay derelict for 18 years before The Source embarked on a 2 year project to convert the space in to the Source Park, complete with a giant park with room for up to 600 spectators, a smaller street plaza where lessons can be run and a retail store selling the latest street wear fashions, as well as BMX and skateboard hardware. The park also has a large café with a DJ booth and super-fast Wifi, which completes the building and overlooks the main park, giving the best view in the house.

We pride ourselves in our abilities for providing extra support for all our students. We have a friendly team who are dedicated to providing learning support, as well as offering advice and guidance with student life.

TUTORIAL SYSTEM

A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we appreciate that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When enrolled at the Sixth Form, you will be assigned a tutor. The tutor assigned to you will be aligned with your academic programme, and will therefore be able support you through your studies.

At college, our Additional Learning Support team can help give you the best chance of success. We recognise that each student has very different needs and will provide you with the support and encouragement that you require. Depending on your circumstances, you can receive financial support at the College. Take a few minutes to read the following information to see what opportunities are available to support you during your time at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

16 – 18 STUDENT SUPPORT FUNDS

Young people who need financial support to help them study at College can apply to the 16 -18 Student Bursary Fund. Under the Guaranteed Bursary Fund, students are eligible for up to £1200 towards the cost of coming to College, if they are: • Young people in care • Leaving the care of their local authority • Those in receipt of Income Support in their own right • Disabled young people in receipt of both Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in their own right.

Other students under the age of 19 are able to receive support to assist with costs associated with their course - such as books, materials and equipment if they meet the criteria below: * Band 1 (Household income £20,000 or under) will be awarded financial help on submission of a successful bursary application. * Band 2 (Household income £25,000 or under) applications in this group will be awarded financial help after October half term – subject to funds remaining. * Band 3 (Household income £30,000 or under) awarded financial help after eligible applications from Band 1 and 2 - subject to funds being available.

HELP TO GET TO COLLEGE

As part of the bursary students are able to apply for travel assistance if they are ineligible for or have been refused other travel support from Local Authorities. For more information, please visit www.sussexcoast.ac.uk/get-to-college.

19+ STUDENT SUPPORT FUND

The 19+ Student Support Fund is a discretionary fund for students aged 19 and over at the start of the academic year. Financial assistance may be provided for the compulsory costs of coming to college, and in exceptional circumstances, fees.

FREE BREAKFAST/MEAL

All students aged 16 - 18 are able to access a free breakfast. This is available at all college sites between 8:15 - 8:45am. All bursary application forms are available on the college website and Student Central.

CHILDCARE SUPPORT Care to Learn

Care to learn is a government scheme providing assistance with the cost of childcare for those students aged under 20 at the start of their course. Childcare provision must be OFSTED registered and financial assistance can be provided up to a maximum of £160 per week. Application forms are available from Student Support or online at www.gov.uk.

20+ CHILDCARE SUPPORT FUND

This fund is available for those aged over 20 at the start of the academic year. It provides assistance with the cost of OFSTED registered childcare for timetabled hours, term time only. Students are expected to contribute towards the cost of their childcare and if they are entitled to Early Years Funding, this is expected to be used to fund timetabled hours.

Students under 19 with a household income of £16,190 or under and in receipt of certain benefits will be eligible for a Further Education Free Meal. For more information about financial support available please contact: Student Services on 01424 458465.

SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIP

As part of our drive to improve the progression of young people into Higher Education in Hastings and Rother the Sixth Form is now offering academic scholarships of £1000 to learners who demonstrate academic potential and outstanding results from 2016/17 onwards. In order to qualify for the scholarship you must meet the following criteria: • Achieve a 90% average attendance over the first year • Achieve A to C grades in all your AS examinations • Be applying to university or an Apprenticeship upon completion of the course • Have a household income of below £50,000 per year The scholarship should be used for academic purposes, whether supporting oneself through college or using the money to buy materials for university. Once enrolled for academic year 16/17 any learner that meets the above criteria will be entered into a draw whereupon a selection will be made.

Make the most of student life. Being a Sussex Coast College Hastings student gives you the opportunity to get a good education and make new friends, all whilst being in the centre of Hastings town. Students are able to visit the town or the beach during their free periods or use the quiet space in the library to study. Toby is studying maths, biology and physics and wants to go to Manchester University to read Physics with Brian Cox. Learn about Toby’s day and how he makes the most of his time here at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

Today I got up early to use the gym at Station Plaza. I like to go to the gym on my own to do some weight training, but often see my classmates working hard on the cardio machines and sometimes we train together.

After my workout, I like to visit Dine to get my free breakfast. There is so much choice but as I am being healthy, I vote for cereal, fruit and a yogurt instead of the bacon bap, which smells amazing!

Now I have two free periods! This is the best thing about being at Sussex Coast College Hastings, we can visit the beach! A group of us meet at Sainsbury’s, round the corner, to get a sandwich and then we head down the road. We spend an hour chilling and playing volley ball before I head into town to get a birthday card for my mum, before I forget! Luckily college is near Priory Meadow and there is so much choice.

I then wander back to college for my final lesson of the day, Physics in the lab. Today we are researching into how MRI scanners work and are looking at previous exam papers.

Now I am off home to get ready for my evening shift at Sainsbury’s. College is a great time to earn some extra cash, I am using mine to learn to drive and have already brought my own car.

My first lesson is Maths. This is my favourite subject as I like the methodological approach, where the answer is either right or wrong. The teachers are very experienced and know how to explain complex equations.

I have a break, this is a good opportunity to return my library books, which only takes two minutes and then I have the rest of my break to meet with two friends for a coffee.

Once break is over, I head to my next lesson which is Biology. Today we get to dissect a heart each, which is so exciting.

I’ve just got home from work, luckily it was a short shift! I am now reading a very interesting article about MRI scanners and the latest developments in health care technology that I found on Facebook- I must remember to show this to my tutor tomorrow. I’m now going to relax, kick back and watch TV before bed: I have an early morning.

Functional Skills If you achieved below a D grade in your English and maths GCSE, Functional Skills will become a part of student life to help you achieve that D grade. The Government developed the Functional Skills study programme to help you achieve the fundamental skills in English and maths to help you work in a business environment. The skills taught are designed to be used in real-life situations. Functional Skills is a stand-alone qualification.

Are you a student who likes doing some course work but enjoys academic study and excels in exams? A-Levels are highly valued by universities and employers and focus on academic subjects, although some are work-related. AS-Levels can be taken as a stand-alone qualification, or as the first part of an A-Level course. AS-Levels are completed at the end of Year 12. A2 exams and coursework are added on to an AS-Level at the end of Year 13 to build an A-Level qualification.

Vocational Courses These courses would suit a student who knows what industry they want to work in, prefers a more practical way of learning in real situations and who likes completing course work. You can build up a vocational qualification from entry level to the highest, Level 3. Vocational courses can help you get the skills you need to start a job, progress in a career or go on to study for a degree or Apprenticeship. A-Level 3 Vocational qualification is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

Are you aged 16-24, looking for an Apprenticeship but don’t have the work experience? If so traineeships could help you. This 12-week programme gives learners two weeks of employability training, 10 weeks of work experience and you will be enrolled on our Functional Skills programme in English and maths.

Did you want to gain a degree but life got in the way? Access to Higher Education courses are designed specifically to prepare learners aged 19 or above for university entry. Many adults across the UK are now using Access to Higher Education courses to reach Higher Education. If you think that your current qualifications are out of date, or insufficient to gain you a place at university, these intensive courses will equip you with the skills you need.

We provide a personalised learning programme for young people (16-24) who have severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities to develop greater independence and employability skills. The teaching, learning and support is provided by specialist staff and is highly structured, with clear ownership of space and access to a range of environments.

Are you a young person (aged 16-25) who is not currently in full-time employment, education or training? Our Prince’s Trust Team Programme is a 12-week course that helps you prepare for the world of work, by giving you the experience and skills needed for the work place. Participants complete a two-week work experience placement in an area of their choice, which gives relevant and recent experience to put on their CV and talk about in a job interview. Students have progressed onto a range of employment and educational routes.

In the unlikely event that your course at college is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account. Anthropology is the scientific study of humans. If you have ever wondered what sets us apart as a species and want to understand how the world’s societies and cultures differ and how they are the same, this course is for you.

This course is perfect for those who want to explore deeper questions of human existence, such as ‘how do we know that God exists?’ and ‘Are the mind and body separate?’. You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A* to C. Grade C or above.

This course is perfect for those who want to develop their teamwork and leadership skills, whilst preparing for a career in the sport, fitness or health industries. You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A* to C. Grade C or above in Physical Education GCSE is preferred but not essential.

Over two years we examine life’s important questions: • Where did humans come from? • How do they organise social relations with each other? • How do they engage with their various environments and what importance does this engagement have in shaping what it is to be human? You will study: • Humanity: universality versus diversity • Biological, socio-cultural and environmental constraints on human manipulation of environment • Origins of human species -symbiosis of biological and socio-cultural development • Interpretation of beliefs and practices • Methods and methodology -appropriate means to research culture with a focus on the process of ethnography

What will I learn? Specifically, the focus of the AS-Level is to develop a sound understanding of the way human beings perceive the reality around them. At A2, the focus moves onto the philosophy of ethics, with the attention primarily on philosophers such as Kant, Mill and Bentham. Towards the end of the A2 course learners will start to question the way we behave as individuals, with a strong focus on deconstructing logic and knowledge (ways of knowing). As a student of Philosophy you will gain an insight into: • The human condition and how we perceive the world around us • Religion and the role that it plays in our society • Critical perspectives on commonly held assumptions in our society • Enlightenment thinking and how philosophers of the enlightenment period broke down the barriers of medieval society What could I progress on to?

What will I learn? This course enables learners to study sport to an advanced level with practical and theoretical components. The practical element requires learners to perform in two selected sports. They are then required to evaluate and suggest how they could improve the performance of another athlete through a theoretical intervention. The course is taught in three lessons a week for the whole academic year. This two-year course will provide you with advanced skills and knowledge to prepare you for work within many sectors of the sports and active leisure industries. To apply for this course you will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A* to C; preferably with a grade B in GCSE English.

If you are interested in understanding our rights, responsibilities and impact in a global context then this course is for you.

What will I learn? In year 1 you will complete the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport before progressing to the Subsidiary Diploma in the second year. The certificate is equivalent to one AS-Level and the full diploma is equivalent to one A-Level. The provision is split between our fantastic onsite gym (fitness elements), and nearby Horntye Park Sports Complex (practical sessions). World development is a multidisciplinary branch of social science that places particular focus on issues related to social and economic development. Its relevance extends to communities and regions beyond the Developing World. You will gain knowledge and understanding of global issues: climate change, migration, gender relations, and access to resources, political development, and the international balance of power.
