We offer a fantastic mix of courses from level 1 right through to degree level, with amazing facilities for you to explore disciplines not normally found outside specialist art colleges. A pre-degree programme integrated with the full-time study programme. You will explore a number of creative practices and theories, while being challenged to design and develop your work. There are many opportunities to experience a range of workshops across the disciplines of craft, fine art and design. You’ll be required to attend two days a week.

This course offers a broad insight to painting, sculpture, printmaking and installation/film. All practical work will be supported by cultural and critical studies and preparation for further development. All of the lecturers are practising artists, and the student experience is enriched by a dynamic visiting lecturer programme by artists both national and international. There are also overseas trips to places such as New York, Amsterdam, Prague and Istanbul.

Contemporary crafts is a diverse and exciting industry which encourages creativity by engaging with materials and processes. You will study areas of craft including ceramics, textiles, metal, printing processes, computeraided design, mould making, plastic and glass. Supporting your practical work are practice-led research and cultural and critical studies, which develop self-management and skills necessary for employment.

This course has been designed to give you an initial introduction into a variety of visual software packages, including InDesign, Illustrator and web-design software such as Dreamweaver. It will help you understand the basic functions of the software and provide you with useful tips and tricks to use within these packages.

Experience a range of approaches to drawing and painting, including life, still-life and your imagination. You will use oil paints, charcoal and collage. Beginners and experienced people welcome. Understand the challenges of painting and drawing using your own work as a starting point during this week-long Summer School. On this course, you will have the option of life drawing and painting.

An introduction to dry-point etching using the etching press. Dry-point is a technique whereby lines are carved into a flat surface, allowing you to create detailed images. During this course you’ll learn a number of skills and techniques with our specialist tutor. You’ll need to supply papers, drawing tools, etching plates, white spirit and tape. Create patterned fabrics using dyes, print blocks, stencils and silk screens. All equipment and basic materials are supplied, and most techniques can be used at home once the basics are mastered. You will also be shown how to make your fabrics into purses, bags and cushions.

This course will start from the ground up! Learn how master etchers such as Rembrandt used acids and metal plates to produce brilliant prints. Explore dry-point etching, the use of copper sulphate and advanced techniques. Printing paper and extra (non-demo) plates are not included in the course fee but can be purchased from Plaza Art Supplies.

This is an introductory course to wet felt making. Make multi coloured felt pieces, felt balls, bowls and jewellery. It is suitable for beginners and those with a little experience. Equipment and materials supplied.

Do you want a quick introduction to the art of glass fusing? Learn basic skills such as fusing and slumping glass and impress with the beautiful pieces you create. This short course is suitable for beginners and those with experience in glasswork.

An exciting course on the techniques used for adding texture and colour to jewellery. Explore embossing, etching, roller-texturing, basic enamelling and achieving patinas through heat and chemicals. You will be encouraged to design and produce your own work, using texture and colour processes.

This open studio class for jewellery, small metalwork and enamel is open to everyone. The studio is equipped with a wide range of jewellery and small metalwork tools, and students will be encouraged to produce and design work through a variety of techniques.

Working with metals, you will learn a range of jewellery techniques and making skills. You will learn practical skills in developing personal ideas and creating unique artefacts, having the opportunity to exhibit your work, building up a portfolio and gaining a level 2 qualification on completion. To complete this course you’ll study an enterprise unit, which is part of the main programme. Upon successful completion, you will gain a level 2 qualification.

This course will introduce you to a variety of techniques within the small metals area. Held in the light, spacious studios at Station Plaza, this course is an opportunity to immerse yourself in jewellery making under expert tuition. Using metals, you will develop and design jewellery and acquire new skills with input from professional jewellers.

You’ll learn basic millinery skills and develop your own design in sinamay (stiffened millinery fabric), adding trimmings such as feathers, beads, veiling, etc. You will also need a basic sewing kit including fabric scissors, milliner’s straw needles, a cotton tea towel, glass-headed pins and a tape measure. Materials you’ll need to provide include sinamay, polyester thread, cotton covered millinery wire, PVA glue and trimmings for your design.

Monoprints are unique prints for which a variety of materials and techniques can be used, making this a lively and experimental process. The beauty of this course is in its spontaneity and combination of printmaking, painting and drawing. You’ll need to supply paper, drawing tools, acetate, white spirit and tape. Most of these can be purchased at Plaza Art Supplies at a discounted rate.

Design and make clothes to your own measurements, whatever your ability. Style and cut will be discussed to find the most flattering fit for each person. A combination of quick solutions and couture techniques will be shown to ensure the finish is as perfect as the fit. Please note that you will be asked to provide relevant materials.

Explore photography from the pinhole to the digital camera. This course will teach you to build your own pinhole camera, darkroom techniques, 35mm black and white photography, using a digital camera and an introduction to Photoshop.

Achieve amazing results using Adobe Photoshop, the professional imageediting software. Learn how to use the entire tool set from the ground up, plus techniques for montage, special effects, painting, retouching, filtering and colour correction.

The course covers use of SLR/digital cameras, studio techniques, developing black and white film, darkroom skills, digital imaging and Photoshop. You will also explore the work of famous/historical photographers. Trips to galleries and exhibitions are an integral part of the course.

Discover the possibilities of print for creating multiple images. If you are comfortable drawing or painting, then you are likely to find this week-long print-making course rewarding. If you are a returning student you will be offered the option of full colour from day one; if you are a new student you will work closely with our specialist practitioner, acquiring new skills.
