STATION PLAZA CAMPUS
Sussex Coast College’s main campus is based next to the train station in Hastings town centre. Courses located here include A-Levels, Art, Business, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Sport, Public Services, Health, Child and Social Care and Foundation Learning. The large, light-filled atrium is surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones. Classrooms are equipped with the most up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, a gym, exhibition areas, Coast Coffee, Dine, Subway, a training kitchen, a professional salon, Coast Restaurant and a large Learning Resource Centre. ORE VALLEY CAMPUS
Less than a mile away, Ore Valley takes under a minute by train from Hastings town centre and has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas. This is where Construction, Engineering, IT and Music Technology students are based.
The Automotive Training Centre offers hands-on training and qualifications in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair.
In the central atrium, students construct, wire, plumb, fit out and decorate a full-sized house.
The centre is located on the Northridge Industrial Estate, has IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) awards accreditation and approval to deliver various levels of Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair programmes and apprenticeships at levels 2 and 3.
Students have access to the latest equipment and digital technology, a Learning Resource Centre, a sports pitch, diner and coffee shop.
The training centre, supported by Snap-On, has all the latest equipment needed for students to train as a technician in the industry.
At both campuses, students have 24/7 access to lessons and learning resources from home via WIKI, podcasts and teacher/student blogs. Students can hire laptops from the LRCs and both sites have Wi-Fi provisions.

The refectories at Station Plaza and Ore Valley serve tasty hot and cold lunches, sandwiches, desserts, fruit, snacks and drinks. Food is freshly prepared on-site and prices are competitive. They are open from 8am - 4pm every weekday.
Coast Coffee
The coffee shops at Station Plaza and Ore Valley are a great place to relax and meet friends. They sell hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, snacks, fruit and pastries. They are open every weekday from 8.30am - 5pm.
Computer Suites
Students at SCCH are encouraged to complete their work on a computer and there are 750 workstations/laptops for student use. The college is fully networked, with high-speed email and Internet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout both campuses. Students can access their college email and shared area from home, through the college website.
Plaza Hair and Beauty
The Training Academy at Station Plaza is fitted with the latest equipment from Wella and offers a wide range of hair and beauty treatments at discounted prices (prices can be found at reception or on the college website). Salons are open to the public.
Plaza Fitness
The Fitness Centre at Station Plaza is run in conjunction with our Sport and Leisure courses and houses top-quality equipment and changing facilities. The gym is fully supervised and is open to students, staff and the public during term-time.
Coast Restaurant
Coast Restaurant serves fine food and wine in modern and intimate surroundings at Station Plaza. Hospitality and Catering students prepare, cook and serve dishes under professional supervision as part of their training, using seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible. The restaurant is an excellent venue for small and large parties, providing a relaxed and professional atmosphere for business and social events.

Learning Resource Centre
There are Learning Resource Centres at Station Plaza and Ore Valley that offer an environment in which any student can find the right atmosphere and assistance to achieve in their studies. Boasting state-of-the-art equipment and well-trained staff, the LRC offers help with proof-reading, presentation preparation, research and writing skills to develop and improve the students’ independent study skills. Other resources include laptops on loan, cinema room, books, audio books and e-books, newspapers and magazines, DVDs, printing, scanning and photocopying, self-issue and online book reservation.
Art Shop
Based at Station Plaza, the art shop stocks a wide range of materials, from charcoal to Fabriano rolls, quality papers and graphic pens. It also provides a bespoke framing service. Students, Hastings Art Forum and SOCO members get a 10% discount.

Functional Skills
Functional Skills are the fundamental applied skills in English, maths and ICT that help people to gain the most from life, learning and work. They are not just about knowledge of English, maths and ICT, they are also about knowing when and how to use the knowledge in real-life situations. Functional skills will involve taking separate tests, which will give you a qualification if you pass them.

Money Matters Depending on your circumstances you can receive financial support for going to college, and in many cases it may cost you nothing.
Under the Guaranteed Bursary Scheme, students are eligible for up to £1,200 towards the cost of coming to college, if they are:

16-18 Student Support Funds
Young people who need some financial support to help them study at college can apply to the 16-19 Student Bursary Fund.
Other students under the age of 18, with a household income of less than £21,000, may be eligible for funding for costs such as travel, food and equipment while in college through the Discretionary Bursary Fund.
19+ Student Support Fund
The 19+ Student Support Fund is a discretionary fund for students aged over 19 at the start of the academic year. Financial assistance may be provided for the compulsory costs of coming to college and, in exceptional circumstances, fees.
Childcare Support Care to Learn
Care to Learn is a government scheme providing assistance with the cost of childcare for those students aged under 20 at the start of their course. Childcare provision must be OFSTED registered and financial assistance can be provided up to a maximum of £160 per week. Application forms are available from Student Services online at www.gov.uk.
20+ Childcare Support Fund
This fund is available for those aged over 20 at the start of the academic year. It provides assistance with the cost of OFSTED registered childcare for timetabled hours, term time only. Students are expected to contribute towards the cost of their childcare and if they are entitled to Early Years Funding, this is expected to be used to fund timetable hours.

CASE STUDY
Kia Browne – Level 3 Business Extended Diploma Kia Browne is studying for a Level 3 Business Extended Diploma at Sussex Coast College Hastings. During her time at SCCH, Kia decided to broaden her horizons and add to her CV by applying for a part-time job at local insurance provider Hastings Direct, as a Claims Adviser. Kia says, ‘Hastings Direct provides the opportunity to work flexible hours to fit around college. I am able to go to college in the morning and work in the afternoon or evening. In the summer holidays, I changed my hours to work full-time which expands my knowledge as a Claims Adviser and gave me great experience. ‘Working in a large company has supported my learning and I’m able to use real-life examples in my case studies at college.
‘Hastings Direct also offers real career opportunities if colleagues are thinking about working full-time after college rather than going to university. ‘They aren’t just a contact centre. Bexhill is the headquarters and although you may start in the contact centre, there are other opportunities to progress into different areas such as HR, marketing and management. There are a lot of opportunities for colleagues who are committed to hard work. Working at Hastings Direct has given me confidence working in different departments; I was able to secure an opportunity to work in HR for work experience, which helped me decide that I wanted to get into HR as a career’.

Stretch and Challenge is all about taking a step outside your comfort zone and trying something new. It encompasses four key areas:
1. The Villiers Park Scholars Programme Sussex Coast College Hastings participates in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme. Scholars moving up from school will have mentoring sessions. If spaces become available at the beginning of the academic year, additional Year 12 scholars from The Sixth Form may be selected. 2. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award We have successfully run the Bronze Award for the last four years and plan to run the popular course again in 2015 -16.
The Wellbeing team is here to help you be healthy, happy and successful. Youth Workers will be running a Pop-up Park once a week, so please come along to chat, relax and eat your lunch. Youth Workers are here for one-to-one support and provide a programme of talks and events relating to sexual health and relationship advice, alcohol and drugs awareness, staying safe, self-esteem and assertiveness and exam stress management among others. Alongside this, social activities and outings are organised to help you meet other students and enjoy your time as a student at Sussex Coast College.

There is a bus stop directly outside our Ore Valley campus and multiple bus stops in the surrounding area that are within walking distance to the campus. There is a car park at Ore Valley, which is free for students to use all year round. We suggest that you arrive early to secure a parking space. Offers
If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to attend an interview. The sooner you return your form, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. As a general rule, these are held weekly.
At the end of your interview, you will receive a written offer confirming what was discussed, including confirmation of any exam grades (or other requirements) you need to achieve to take up the place. If you
decide to accept your place, we will continue to send you information about starting college.
Enrolment
After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become a Sussex Coast College student! You will need to bring your exam results, and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when, where and how you start your course.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION • If you are not sure what you want to do, or you want to keep your options open, you can apply for up to two courses and have more than one interview. The most important thing is that you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you! • Once you have been accepted on to a course, you can still change your mind.

A-Level information A-Levels are two-year courses similar to GCSEs but at a higher level in a varied range of subjects. In your first year you complete AS and progress to A2 for your second year. You need to select three or four subjects although some students take five. A mixture of coursework and exams assesses you at the end of each year. With A-Levels you can progress to university or into employment. CASE STUDY Saffron Peterson Biology, Chemistry and English Literature A Levels Saffron Peterson has turned her life around after waking up one day and thinking ‘there must be more to life than this’. After a very tough few years growing up, Saffron found herself stuck in a rut of missing school, hanging out with the wrong crowds and disappearing for weeks on end. Things were so bad that the police got involved and fines were issued to her regularly for poor attendance. Saffron was a bright school pupil and was predicted good grades, but disappointed her teachers and mother by her lack of commitment and interest. Saffron was more interested in being popular and hanging around with groups of friends. After missing all of her GSCE exams, Saffron left school with no qualifications and decided to join military college, with the Army being her best and last hope, or so she thought. After six weeks, Saffron decided it
wasn’t for her and applied for Art A-Level at Sussex Coast College Hastings. She didn’t think she would have a chance of getting in, but, based on a small portfolio and confident interview at the college, she was given a chance. From here, Saffron has gone on to study biology, chemistry and English literature AS-Levels and is predicted A* grades at A-Level. She has been told to apply for Russell Group universities including York, Manchester and Bristol, hoping to qualify as a neurosurgeon. She is also studying for a Harvard Online certificate in neuroscience, as she hopes this will increase her chances of getting a place at university. In her spare time, she is a keen musician and singer, and volunteers part-time at kennels. Saffron added: ‘with some hard work and determination, you can be what you want to be and do what you want to do, at any age, it’s never too late. I love studying at Sussex Coast College, the staff are a great support.’

Josh Speer – Level 3 Art and Design Josh was convinced the Army was for him. Wanting to leave home, he studied Uniform Public Services at SCCH before taking the step to join the Army. During his studies, Josh’s circumstances changed and he found himself living with his grandparents. Surrounded by their artistic nature, he became convinced to follow his dream of studying art. Josh has just completed Level 3 Art and Design to an exceptionally high standard, gaining a triple distinction. ‘The teachers here are all practitioners and the facilities are excellent. The best thing about studying here is that art is integrated across the whole college.
‘We have worked on ceramic projects with the Hair and Beauty salon as well as a casting project with the catering students. Tim Olorunda – Level 3 Advanced Plumbing (Apprenticeship) In 2009, I was made redundant and was looking for a radical change in direction. I had always been interested in the plumbing world, but had never really had the opportunity to pursue it.
Studying while working was great for me as it enabled me to carry on the lifestyle I had before starting the apprenticeship. Being a mature learner, at 24, I needed a steady income to pay the bills.
Initially, I started a ‘learn from home’ scheme and although it gave me an insight into the world of plumbing, I didn’t feel I was getting enough practical experience, so I decided to enrol at Sussex Coast College Hastings.
Since completing my apprenticeship, I have gone on to buy the company I started working for! Without the help of Sussex Coast College, this would have never been an option for me. With their help and guidance, I left SCCH with my Level 2 and Level 3 City & Guilds plumbing certificates, unvented water certificate, solar, and my gas qualifications.
After contacting a variety of local plumbing firms, I got offered an apprenticeship with Advanced Plumbing Solutions which subsequently folded, leaving me with the same role at the Better Plumbing and Heating Company.
I’d like to thank the tutors at SCCH for all of their hard work, expert teaching and continued advice and guidance whenever I needed it.

A personalised learning programme for young people (16-24) who have severe learning difficulties and/ or disabilities to develop greater independence and employability skills. The teaching, learning and support is provided by specialist staff and is highly structured, with clear ownership of space and access to a range of environments. Teaching and learning strategies follow the principles of TEACCH, and can be communicated through PECS and Makaton. Luke Blackwell – Health and Social Care Luke attended ARK William Parker school before joining Sussex Coast College Hastings. Unsure what to do, Luke enrolled on Health and Social Care as his friends were too, and it was the best career decision he could have made. Just weeks after finishing his BTEC, Luke secured a job working for the NHS as a trainee project manager in the Clinical Commissions Group, aiming to one day run his own hospital. ‘The course is varied and we get to study everything from counselling, equality and diversity, complementary therapies, anatomy and physiology as well as legislation and procedures,’ says Luke.

Sian Hilder – Hospitality and Catering Sian found her passion for cooking and hospitality when she enrolled on to the course at Sussex Coast College Hastings. ‘Although I have always been interested in cooking, I never took it seriously or felt like I had any talent or ability to pursue it further. I enrolled on the Level 2 course and I’m so glad I did because it can open up so many job opportunities. It’s made me think about how the food I eat is produced and the importance of supporting local farms and businesses as well as the presentation and eating.’ says Sian. While working on the course she has gained a wide variety of skills that have contributed to her success.
‘I can also converse with other members of staff and also the general public which I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to do, as I lacked confidence in this area,’ explains Sian. Following her successful first year at SCCH, Sian has now progressed to the Level 3 qualification and is looking to progress to further qualifications once she has completed the course. Amanda Brooks – Music Technology Amanda started working professionally in the music industry in the early 1980s as a session vocalist for groups and artists in recording studios. She continued to perform regularly throughout the UK, in clubs, pubs, theatres and festivals, always in high demand. Amanda has worked closely with studio producers, engineers and musicians and has had a passion for music creation most of her life. She decided to build on this passion and talent by studying at Sussex Coast College Hastings, where she achieved a Triple National Diploma. With the support and guidance from tutors at SCCH, Amanda took the brave step to form her own business.

Daina Rose Sport student Level 3 Sports Injury Management Daina Rose joined Level 3 Sports Injury Management in 2013, straight after leaving Helenswood. Aged just 17, she has successfully passed the course and is planning to start her own sports therapy business from home, while studying sports massage part-time at SCCH. Daina is an elite trampolinist, competing for Great Britain in events across the world, and has experienced physiotherapy first hand on many occasions. This highlighted
an interest in anatomy and strapping and taping with Daina, who chose to learn the theory behind the practical, as well as getting a hands-on approach from the other side. Daina adds, ‘I wouldn’t have had the confidence to start my own business before. The tutors here are fantastic and break everything down to help you learn. What is an Apprenticeship?
As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the level of the programme.

From September 2014 our Access pathways have been re-branded, so that your qualification accurately reflects your learning experience. Access has only one aim: to help learners over 19 years to enter higher education. If you think that your current qualifications may be out of date or insufficient to gain you a place at university, these intensive one-year courses will equip you with the skills you need to pursue your chosen subject at most British universities. Students wishing to study Humanities at university will find that this course not only does the trick, but goes quite a lot further.
Sharing several of the core units with the Humanities pathway, this course is intended to enable learners to apply for a range of social sciences and social administration degrees which include social work, forensics and criminology.
Students will take subject-centred courses such as history and philosophy of education, childhood studies, and the history of post-1945 education in Britain. Students will also join with their peers to study crossover subject areas such as sociology, English literature, critical thinking, history, media and film, and others that aid understanding of the wider world. This course will fully support your UCAS application and enable you to apply for most university courses in education studies.
Taught across a range of subjects, students join their peers in Social Sciences and initial Teacher Education to study core subjects that range from study skills with critical thinking, English literature, history and philosophy, to media studies, film studies and the creative arts.
Core units of study will cover similar ground to Humanities, but students in this area will be required to work to tailor-made assignments as their course develops, fully relating to their academic expectations.

This course is specifically for those wishing to pursue a career in nursing or related professions.
The Access to Science Diploma offers an excellent grounding in the development of specific academic preparation skills and independent research. It is particularly useful for students planning to continue with their studies in Higher Education within the field of science.
Students on this course will learn camera, lighting, scriptwriting, sound recording, editing and other techniques and will work in a team producing programmes including documentaries and drama. You will also learn about film analysis, prepare for a seminar, and write about films. We will provide help with note taking, writing skills and research. Working independently and in small groups, after initial training, you will organise yourselves and operate like a small film/video company.
The course covers topics including the roles and issues relating to careers in the health service and nursing, plus modules in science and nursing studies, sociology, psychology, study skills and IT.
Subjects covered include physics, chemistry, biology, human physiology and study skills.

From September 2014, most British universities will impose a basic entry requirement of Grade C in maths and English at GCSE. Nursing and Midwifery (see above), some Social Science/ Economics courses and all Teacher Education courses will require these grades. Applicants wishing to go on to teach at Primary level must have additionally attained a Science subject at grade C.
