Mike has spent the last two years on the OEM side of the business, following nine years of retail experience working for a successful multi-line construction equipment dealer.

Cat Upgrades D10 Dozer

Infused with industry-leading technology, the durable Cat® D10 Dozer burns less fuel, increases productivity and improves uptime.

Featuring a stator clutch torque converter and loadsensing hydraulics, the new design is up to 6% more efficient than the Cat D10T2. Its combination of improved technology, longer component life, extended oil changes and increased serviceability reduces maintenance and repair costs up to 8%, helping the new D10 deliver industryleading low cost of ownership.

The new D10 is powered by the Cat C27 engine, which offers aftertreatment solutions to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V as well as Tier 2 equivalent emissions standards for meeting the needs of the global market. Maximizing material moved per liter of fuel, the C27 switches power settings based on travel direction to offer up to 20% more power in reverse, reducing cycle times. In addition to delivering productivity gains of up to 3%, the new D10 offers up to a 4% fuel consumption advantage over the D10T2 and up to 10% over the D10T.

The dozer’s new torque converter design with stator clutch automatically frees up the stator when torque multiplication is not required, improving drivetrain efficiency for reduced fuel consumption. During high-load and retarding conditions, the stator clutch locks without the need for operator input.

The Future Of Mining In BC

The Mining Suppliers Association of BC (MSABC) is launching a new campaign highlighting the exciting and innovative technologies BC’s mining industry suppliers are using to advance the future of mining in the province.

Redefining Mining digs into the ways suppliers across BC are taking action to decarbonize, electrify and sustainably manufacture products, leading to increased efficiency, reduced waste, enhanced safety, and improved environmental performance.

“The BC mining industry is continuously looking for opportunities to improve performance, to redefine how mining can be more efficient and more environmentally responsible,” said Alec Morrison, President and CEO, Mining Suppliers Association of BC. “BC is the right place to mine as global demand increases for copper, steel making coal and the other critical minerals needed to transition to a low carbon economy.”

Here are just a few ways BC’s mining service providers and suppliers are redefining mining and working together to integrate new technologies into the industry:

Transportation

The transportation industry alone makes up 50% of emissions in the province and of that, a little over 10% is of heavy-duty trucking emissions. Such a large impact on the overall emissions gives mining and transportation industries a profound opportunity to reduce emissions on a large scale. Arrow Transportation uses telematics technology to track carbon emissions and provide truck-driving sustainability scores enabling emission reduction while new technologies such as hydrogen-powered transport trucks are developed and brought to market.

Electrification

Another technology bridge is SMS Equipment’s electric trolley assist being used presently to help large haul trucks decarbonize. Shifting from fully diesel fueled trucks to using electric trolley assist in the form of an overhead power line grid system allows diesel engines to ramp down, increase clean energy use and lower carbon intensity. As a result, Copper Mountain has so far achieved a 30% carbon reduction.

Passive closures

JDS Energy and Mining supports mining ESG goals by helping to plan and implement passive closure methods to replace traditionally used active management. Passive closure reduces the use of energy and labour by reducing required site presence and utilizing natural features such as the sun and gravity to move sites towards an acceptable final state that minimizes risk for communities and wildlife.

Smart parts

Kal Tire is focusing efforts on material intensity and looking at using less material to do more. This means extending a tire’s life and reducing the manufacturing of new tires. One new mining tire is 8K pounds of steel and rubber. By repairing rather than replacing a mining truck tire, Kal Tire can reduce 450 litres of oil from being consumed, or 18 tonnes of CO2 from being released.

Reducing power

The move towards a low carbon economy is already happening as Sacre-Davey Engineering works closely with UBC graduate researchers to advance the latest technologies for reducing power consumption, waste and emissions associated with mining operations. This includes ongoing research at UBC’s Coal and Mineral Processing Laboratory to find new ways to sort ore, such as using duel-energy x-ray transmission and optical sensing systems to separate valuable ore from waste rock. This technology limits the waste being sent to tailing dams and reduces the environmental footprint of mining operations.

“British Columbians want clean mining,” says Cheryl Gray, Vice President of Finning Canada. “We all recog-

nize that we’re in a wonderful province with an abundance of resources, but we all want to be thoughtful about how we mine and doing that means we leverage new technologies and better ways of doing things than we did in the past.”

Environment, water protection and overall ESG initiatives are now key conversations and imperatives in industry and British Columbia’s mining industry is leading the way towards decarbonization. In a short period of time, MSABC’s members have helped mine operators make significant advancements towards emission reductions and the work continues. Beyond these highlighted ways that the industry is redefining mining, many other innovative advances are being made for the common goal of carbon reduction and a global shift towards increased sustainability.

Recycling Precious Metals From E-Waste With Captured CO2

Toronto researcher Gisele Azimi has pioneered a method for using captured carbon dioxide to harvest precious metals from electronic waste such as car batteries, wind turbine magnets, and fluorescent bulbs.

Gisele Azimi is bringing battery recycling to a new level, using captured carbon dioxide to harvest the precious metals used for green technologies. Azimi, a University of Toronto professor and the Canada Research Chair for Urban Mining Innovations, has pioneered a method to separate critical metals from electronic waste like batteries, and wind turbine materials.

“These are the materials that are needed for transferring our society towards a carbon free era. But there are limited resources available for these materials,” says Azimi.

Recycling electronic waste provides an efficient avenue to gain these vital resources, where they are found at a rate of 20 to 38%. Conventionally mined ores typically only

contain 1 to 2% concentrations of rare earth metals. International investment in recycling is growing, as the capacity and technologies for electronics recycling improve.

“There are countries, and Canada is one of the leaders, that are really looking at this and they understand the importance of enabling recycling to our society,” she says.

The recycling technique her team has honed involves heating and pressurizing CO2, transforming it into a supercritical fluid. In this state, it can be used to dissolve and extract critical metals from their surroundings. The big advantage of CO2 is that you don’t have to get it very hot to initiate this conversion – only to about 30 degrees Celsius.

To refine and better understand this supercritical fluid recycling process, Azimi approached the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron at the University of Saskatchewan. The results from this investigation were recently published in the journal Inorganic Chemistry.

Currently able to extract metals from car batteries, wind turbine magnets, fluorescent bulbs and many things in between, Azimi and her collaborators continue to push the boundaries of their method and carbon-negative recycling. They are working with industry partners on piloting the technique and improving profitability, and have set their sights on recovering gold and copper from circuit boards.

Azimi’s PhD student Jiakai Zhang led a significant portion of this research, which also involved collaboration with the CLS’s Ning Chen, Valeria Morozova, and Oleksandr Voznyy. This work was funded through Azimi’s Canada Research Chair and an NSERC Discovery Grant. SP

B.C., Japan Renew Energy, Minerals Partnership

The Province of British Columbia and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) have signed a renewed and strengthened memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore mutually beneficial solutions to enhance export opportunities and help unlock new sources of energy, such as hydrogen.

“Japan is as a vital market for British Columbian businesses and a key pillar in our long-term economic success that will create jobs and benefit all British Columbians,” said Premier David Eby. “Today marks the renewal of a partnership between British Columbia and Japan that will bolster energy security and leverage B.C.’s status as a cleanenergy powerhouse to help us move toward the clean-energy solutions of the future.”

The renewed MOU builds on a long-standing partnership between JOGMEC and British Columbia. It will foster greater collaboration between the two parties on crucial issues related to energy and environmental sustainability.

“We value the strong relationship with JOGMEC that has contributed to positive developments in our energy and mining sectors, supporting good, well-paying jobs for British Columbians,” said Josie Osborne, B.C. Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “Japan is a critically important export market for our energy and mineral products, and this renewed memorandum of understanding shows our commitment to further

strengthening this trading relationship and advancing lowcarbon fuels, like hydrogen.”

The MOU is intended to strengthen collaboration between JOGMEC and the Province in three key areas:

• deployment and use of hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel;

• export of energy and minerals, including critical minerals; and

• carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology.

The MOU embraces JOGMEC’s expanded mandate, which includes equity investment for the production and storage of hydrogen and ammonia, and carbon dioxide capture and storage. The inclusion of mineral resources reflects the important trade relationship that exists between Japan and B.C.

“Transitioning and finding more low-carbon solutions are key to a cleaner, more sustainable future,” stated Brenda Bailey, B.C. Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “Renewing this agreement with JOGMEC reinforces our commitment to finding innovative solutions to solve global industry chal-

lenges. We look forward to working with our international partners to strengthen our supply chains, support more well-paid jobs and build a stronger, greener economy for generations to come.”

JOGMEC sent the following statement about the MOU renewal: “JOGMEC sees B.C. as an important partner and welcomes the renewal of the MOU. Japan and B.C. have had a long relationship across the Pacific Ocean. Through the MOU, JOGMEC will strengthen the bilateral relationship with B.C., and secure a stable and affordable supply of natural resources and energy to Japan, as well as achieve carbon neutrality.”

Both parties are collaborating on a detailed action plan to follow the MOU to help guide the work required during the term of the agreement.

Making Connections

When my dad, Dennis passed in 2019, he left us with quite a collection of old 8mm films and several thousand slides. Brother Barry had them in his storage and asked us brothers if we wanted them. I spoke up and said I could probably find a use for them.

As I was not a computer expert, I went looking for some help. I had been using a local tech company, but they weren’t doing the job. I went to London Drugs and asked them, they gave me a number of a guy who worked for “Apple Support” and we connected.

Dad had some of his 8mm stuff transferred to digital to make a one hour and 45 minute video called “The Day At The Farm.” This video had old 8mm stuff of the family farm from the early 1940s taken by my grandmother Barbara. As near as I can tell, Dad got his 8mm camera when I was about three years old, as there were no movies

of me before that. This video was all about my Dad’s side of the family, me and my 3 brothers at Christmas, and lots of birthday parties.

I’m not sure what happened with Kodak in the early sixties, I think they started the Super 8 system, which required a new camera and projector, the film was bigger. So Dad took a photography course from Don McIvor and started taking slides.

My computer guy installed Handbrake to transfer from cd to digital.

The next step was to get an Epson V600 scanner installed, as there were upwards of 7,000 slides plus 1,500 of my own. I spent some time

learning how to transfer slides to my computer.

Next I bought an 8mm movie digitizer, and learned how to transfer the movies. Once I got these done I asked my Computer Guy, “I want to be able to cut, copy and paste these movies.”

“No problem,” he said, and installed the iMovie app.

My son Clayton was trying to make some money on YouTube by showing some of these old logging movies which were proving to be really popular. Then another connection was made.

Supply Post would like to introduce our newest column, “Kenny’s Loggin’”. We found a fascinating video on YouTube recently; a digitized version of an old, scratchy 8mm film of logging in action, with a descriptive narration. We were intrigued, and had to know more about it. We caught up with Ken Wilson, whose father Dennis recorded the film, and Ken’s son Clayton who uploaded it to YouTube. By Linda Horn and Ken Wilson.

This is the first story we did.

Some of the movies I knew lots about them as I had worked at the places, but I had a thirty minute video I knew nothing about. We had posted some videos and one day in the comments I received a comment from a Jim Whittaker. He said, “I can remember when your dad Dennis worked for my Dad Phil Whittaker as foreman, and can remember Dennis taking these movies.”

I connected with Jim got his phone number. Jim was able to supply information about this movie. He was about fourteen he remembered logging on Salt Spring Island and travelling around to the various loggers sports and logging operations. Jim is in the Loggers Sports video showing his chopping skills. He was in a blue jacket. [Supply Post newspaper, September 2021, page 31]

These are just some of most important connections I’ve made recently. It has been a steep learning curve and really fun making the connections. This whole experience has been wonderful and rewarding.

Talking To Jim

I saw it was Jim Whittaker’s birthday on Facebook

so I gave him a call. I wanted some information about the logging videos of Salt Spring Island.

My dad Dennis started right out of school with Phil Whittaker. In the early 1950s, he was logging some of Salt Spring Island. Dennis showed a lot of promise and enthusiasm, so Phil trained him as a logging foreman. He soon learned how to run all the equipment that was on the claim.

They logged for a few years on the island starting up at the north end and eventually ending up around Burgoyne Bay.

Jim said that they had several donkeys — powered by gas Ford engines. Lots of war surplus stuff. I asked him what they did for fuel as the Cats and trucks were diesel and the donkeys and welders took gas. The biggest war surplus items were 45 gallon barrels. They would load the landing barge with 45 gallon drums, fuel them up and take them to the logging show where they were distributed as needed. At some point they would have to be manhandled and the fuel pumped by hand. Jim mentioned that the fuel was dirty lots of times, always had lots of spare filters standing by.

Some places they loaded trucks and dumped into the water and other places hauled right onto the beach with the Cat and arch, where the logs were bucked and pushed out to the booms at high tide. Some of the roads they hauled logs on are now public highways.

They would run crew boats to the closest tie-up places from their logging. Randells Point, which was at Cherry Point, Maple Bay, and Cowichan Bay. Howard Randell had a wharf and boat

launch; they would haul the boats up to scrape the barnacles off. Jim said this was one of his first jobs. Scraping barnacles was ok for the first day or so but once the barnacles died there was a

whole lot of stinking going on. Howard Randell had two sons Ray and Billy and they owned the landing barge and boat seen in the video. They were kept pretty busy servicing the logging going on in the vicinity. They were

always delivering barrels of fuel. Apparently, they would back the cat and arch down to the landing barge and hook up to a dozen barrels with the chokers on the arch and up the hill to the machines (lots of spillage)

Jim lives in Cowichan Bay right down by the water. He spent lots of years in Squamish just moving back recently. Jim still has some antique equipment which he is donating to loggers museums. Thanks Jim.

Calgary Aggregate Recycling: Canada’s Largest C&D Waste Plant

Wash plant will be showcased to the industry at upcoming open house event on Sept 7th.

Later this year, washing experts CDE, in partnership with concrete, asphalt and aggregate recycling firm Calgary Aggregate Recycling Inc. (CAR), will host an open house event to showcase the company’s largest construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant in Canada.

Recently commissioned at CAR’s recycling facility in southeast Calgary, the new 250 tons per hour (tph) washing solution, designed and engineered by CDE, will take centre stage on Thursday 7th September 2023 as industry representatives gather to learn more about CDE’s innovative recycling process and the positive impact its technology is having on resource availability in the Calgary and Alberta areas.

In addition to the significant volume of material the plant is diverting from landfill, the circular approach to resource management is also

helping to reduce carbon emissions in Alberta, particularly when it is estimated that the population growth of Canada will double by 2050.

Adrian continues: “CDE waste recycling solutions are perfectly adapted to support urban centres where the need for construction materials is greatest. As well as landfill diversion, our solutions help to realize sustainability aims by reducing, or completely eliminating, the requirement to truck in sand and aggregate resources from other jurisdic-

tions – an approach that generally comes at a significant environmental cost.”

It is expected that the plant will help to reduce carbon emissions in Alberta by an estimated 22,567 tons annually.

scrubbing and classification system, which combines prescreening, scrubbing, organics removal, sizing, stockpiling, fines recovery and filtrates removal on a compact chassis.

The solution also features CDE’s EvoWash, a modular sand washing system that screens and separates smaller sand and gravel fractions through an integrated highfrequency dewatering screen and hydrocyclone technology to provide unrivaled control of silt cut points and eliminate the loss of fines, as well as its CFCU (Counter Flow Classification Unit) technology which offers a variable cut (separation) point to provide greater control over sand classification.

Underscoring the solu-

tion is CDE’s AquaCycle thickener water management system, which offers efficient recycling of up to 90% of process water, and its Filter Press sludge dewatering system which presses sludge discharged from the thickener to recover even more water –bringing recovery up to 95%.

Seven saleable products

Processing up to 250tph of raw feed material, the CDE solution is transforming C&D waste into a high value suite of construction products, helping CAR to generate additional revenue while simultaneously diverting significant tonnages of material from landfill.

Among the outputs are 0-1mm fine and 0-4mm coarse sands as well as 4-10mm undersize, 10-20mm

midsize, plus 20-40mm, 40100mm and >100mm oversize aggregates.

Frequently tested to ensure compliance with City of Calgary standards and specifications, the product suite is being marketed to the wider construction industry in the Calgary and Alberta areas and is supporting a range of major public works and infrastructure projects, including a project with City of Calgary, hauling 1,300 tons of contaminated soils out of the Bow River, this project generate 54 tons of CO2 emissions, saved from the environment.

Stepping up to the challenge

Prior to CAR working with CDE, it did not have an outlet for contaminated soils. Therefore trucks were taking a 350km round trip

to dispose of contaminated soils at a landfill whereas now the trucks have increased load frequencies per day, with less servicing required resulting in a reduction in carbon emissions. Additionally, CAR are producing in spec material for the Calgary and wider construction sector.

British Columbians Support Developing Critical Minerals

Three quarters of British Columbians would like to see the province become a world leader in supplying critical minerals that are vital to clean technologies and fighting climate change, according to a recent survey undertaken for the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) by Spark*Insights and Abacus Data.

“There is strong public support and recognition of the importance of critical minerals in every region of our province, across generations, and across the political spectrum,” said Michael Goehring, President and CEO of MABC. “Critical minerals are the essential building blocks for clean technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and electric vehicles. Without them we can’t reach our climate goals.”

“The need for critical minerals has changed the conversation on mining. Today, British Columbians see responsible mining as a way to grow our economy and fight climate change,” said Goehring.

Many of the minerals on Canada’s critical minerals list are found or produced in British Columbia, including aluminum, antimony, bis-

muth, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, germanium, indium, lead, molybdenum, niobium, silver, tantalum, tungsten, and zinc. BC is also home to rare earth minerals, and two world-class nickel deposits. All are vital to the environmental, economic and national security goals of Canada and our allies.

These two events highlight British Columbia’s (BC) ongoing leadership in sustainable trade, technological innovation and introducing Canadian goods to new markets supported by partners such as DP World in Canada.

The 100-year anniversary

marks an opportunity to celebrate the ongoing commitment of DP World employees, the ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union)—with over 10,000 longshore and foremen employees having worked for DP World in BC over the past 20 years—handling over 20 million loaded twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs). Centerm Expansion Project

DP World and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority also marked the completion of the Centerm Expansion Project, a $350 million CAD ($260 million USD) awardwinning project to increase throughput by 60% and position British Columbia as a leader in sustainable trade.

The newly expanded terminal can now handle 1.5

million TEUs a year, compared to 900,000 TEUs previously, while adding 15% to the terminal’s overall footprint.

The project reduces the terminal’s environmental impact by adding capacity for container ships to connect to electrical shore power and converting its diesel yard cranes to electric. It further reduces greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating wait times for vehicles at train crossings and building to LEED and Envision

VANCOUVER FRASER PORT

DP World has committed to investing $500 million globally over the next five years to help cut its carbon emissions by 700,000 tonnes to become a net-zero carbon enterprise by 2050.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority also completed the South Shore Access Project earlier this month in partnership with the Government of Canada and with funding from the National Trade Corridors Fund. The final part of the South Shore Access Project, including upgrades to Waterfront Road and the removal of road and rail conflicts in the area to connect terminals directly to the Trans-Canada Highway are now complete.

Kenworth Chillicothe Plant Hosts Second Annual Kenworth Truck Parade

The 2023 Kenworth Truck Parade Paid Tribute to Kenworth’s 100th Anniversary.

The Kenworth truck assembly plant in Chillicothe, Ohio, recently held its second annual Kenworth Truck Parade in downtown Chillicothe. This year, the parade paid tribute to Kenworth’s 100th anniversary.

The 2023 Kenworth Truck Parade featured more than 50 new, classic and customized Kenworth trucks, including models built in the 1920’s and 1930’s, a 1976 Bicentennial W900 VIT-200, two Liberty Edition Kenworths – a K100 Cabover and W900 Conventional, a 1984 W900B from Australia, as well as Kenworth’s 100th anniversary Signature Edition T680 and Limited Edition W900 trucks. A T680, recently delivered to Heartland Express and representing the milestone 750,000th truck produced at the Kenworth Chillicothe plant, also participated in the event.

To commemorate Kenworth’s 100th anniversary, the trucks featured in the parade

started with those built in the 1920s and followed chronological order ending with trucks built in 2023 to showcase Kenworth’s history and advancements throughout the years. Drivers from across the U.S. and Canada traveled to Chillicothe to showcase their trucks in the parade. The parade began at dusk, allowing drivers to show off as they made their way through the historic downtown area of Chillicothe.

“After a successful inaugural Kenworth truck parade last year, this year’s event was even bigger and better as we continue to celebrate Kenworth’s 100th anniversary,” said Jack Schmitt, Kenworth Chillicothe assistant plant manager. “It was great to see trucks dating back to the 1920s when Kenworth first opened its doors to our latest models, many of which are built here in Chillicothe. The event would not be possible without the engagement

of our Kenworth Chillicothe planning team, the drivers who came from near and far to show off their rigs and the city of Chillicothe for coming out to support the parade.”

Leading up to the truck parade, the Kenworth Chillicothe plant held events at its facility for drivers and their families participating in and attending the parade. Drivers had an opportunity to tour the Kenworth Chillicothe plant to see where the majority of Kenworth’s trucks are built. The plant also hosted an employee family event on the plant’s property during the day of the parade.

Chris Koenig, who owns the Kenworth 75th anniversary Limited Edition Kenworth W900L that was used to haul a special Kenworth history trailer for Kenworth’s 75th anniversary tour, showed off his big rig at the parade and attended events held at the Chillicothe plant. The same trailer, owned by the Koenig

family, was recently reimagined and is being used during this centennial year as a mobile history exhibit to celebrate Kenworth’s 100th anniversary.

“My father Al was a big Kenworth fan and history buff and he passed along his passion for Kenworth trucks down to me,” said Koenig.

“It was fun to tour the plant and meet other Kenworth enthusiasts at this event. There were some really great looking trucks at the parade this year, including vintage trucks built when Kenworth first got its start.”

To support the local community, the Kenworth Chillicothe plant and the United Way of Ross County teamed up to coordinate a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds going to the United Way of Ross County. During the parade, Kenworth Chillicothe employees and members of the United Way of Ross County walked around the event to sell raffle tickets. The Kenworth Chillicothe plant also raised money for the non-profit organization through sponsorships of the VIP area along the truck parade route. In total, more than $22,000 was donated to the United Way of Ross

County.

The Kenworth Chillicothe plant, which opened in 1974, is located on a 120-acre site 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio. The 622,000 squarefoot plant features advanced manufacturing technologies, including robotic assembly, and a state-of-the-art paint facility that utilizes the latest technology in the industry. The multi-level paint facility went into production in Octo-

ber 2021 and is equipped with bell spray head technology that improves the appearance and transfer efficiency of the paint. In 2022, the Kenworth Chillicothe plant received two Manufacturing Leadership Awards for its new Kenworth Paint Facility and Henrob Error Proofing project from the National Association of Manufacturers. An International Air Affair

How did two of Conair’s specialized aircraft end up in Australia? Our Ronald Mullins takes a look at a fiery journey.

Canadians are very familiar with the threats and damage caused by forest wildfires, and beginning in March 2023 new records are being recorded for damage and destruction right across the country. In British Columbia, the Donnie Creek wildfire burning south of Fort Nelson, in the northeastern region of the province, at over 534,300 hectares will go into the record books as the largest wildfire to date in the province. In Alberta, wildfires have raged causing multiple communities to be placed on evacuation orders, resulting in over 30,000 people being temporarily forced from their homes. Ontario is reporting over three times more wildfires thus far in 2023 than in previous years. Quebec has seen 1,160,127 hectares charred, far greater than the ten-year average of 8,353

hectares. The maritime provinces have experienced record setting wildfires as well. In Nova Scotia, wildfires have burned approximately 24,128 hectares, causing the evacuation of 18,000 people.

Canada is not the only country experiencing severe destruction and loss from wildfires. Our US neighbours, and further south to Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina are all experiencing record-setting wildfire losses. Europe has not been immune to the damage either with mega wildfires raging in Spain, France, Italy and Greece. Down-under, New Zealand’s north island accounted for three quarters of the country’s wildfires and the south island accounted for 85% of the areas burnt. Further to the west, Australia is experiencing elevated fire danger in central Australia,

inland New South Wales, western Tasmania, southern Queensland and western Australia, particularly toward the end of their summer/fall season when drier weather and high fuel loads can be expected.

Fall season in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Due to this difference in the seasons and weather systems, wildfire season in the Northern Hemisphere usually runs from March into October while in the Southern Hemisphere the timing of fire season typically varies compared to that of Canada.

Fighting these wildfires has become an international affair requiring people and resources being shared from country-to-country whenever needed and when possible. This wildfire season has

seen crews arriving in Canada from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, France, Portugal and Spain. Along with manpower, aircraft and helicopters form a large part of this international exchange with men, women and ma-

chines moving across borders to become part of the bigger firefighting picture.

domestically and internationally for over 50 years. They are the recognized leaders in the aerial firefighting industry supporting government agencies with the largest, privately owned, fixed wing fleet in the world. Their resources also allow them to be a leader in the international exchange of engineers, planners, aircrews, technicians as well as aircraft. Currently, Conair has aircraft, aircrew and maintenance technicians deployed in Alaska, Yukon, Alberta, British Columbia and Washington State as well as aircraft ready to assist agencies operating across the USA. Additionally, they have delivered aircraft to France’s Sécurité Civile for the French fleet for decades and every fall prepare and ferry aircraft to Australia to assist our good friends down-under.

In the off-season for wildfires in North America, Conair has deployed Avro RJ85 AT and De Havilland Dash 8-400 AT air-tankers, aircrews and support technicians to New South Wales, Australia, where they team up with Australian aerial firefighting and aviation specialist Field Air Group. These aircraft have been highly, custom modified by Conair with specialized avionics including a Flight Envelope Awareness System, which provides pilots with enhanced safety awareness information, such as instantaneous G-Loading, slow speed awareness and angle of attack detail, along with flap configuration over-speed awareness and proprietary constant flow Retardant Delivery System (RDS) purpose built for aerial firefighting. The RJ85 can deliver 11,355 litres (3,000 US gal) while the Dash 8-400 can deliver 10,000 litres (2,640 US gal) of water, retardant or gel on a fire and can remain safely, on the fire for extended periods.

How Do They Do It?

Getting aircraft from Abbotsford to New South Wales, Australia, comes with its own set of challenges… how to get aircraft that are designed and built to fly short distances to destinations that are more than half-way around the world. Yes, it is done everyday by large passenger aircraft, but traditionally aerial firefighting aircraft are only required to fly short distances and in areas with airports where they can be refuelled as needed. But there

are no such refuelling facilities in the mid Pacific, just thousands of kilometres of open ocean.

Preparation for these ferry flights starts months in advance. Once the aircraft return from their North American deployment, they are intensely checked and tested from the tip of their nose cone to the very end of the stabilizer and from wing tip to wing tip by Conair’s team of highly-specialized technicians, a process that may take up to six weeks. Included with this is the removal, by the avionics department, of all North American customer radios and the installation of specific Australian FM radios and long-range HF radios for the trip across the Pacific.

Aircrew and support technicians are identified and begin intensive training in Conair’s Training and Tactics Centre. Additionally, planning for all forecasted future maintenance is scheduled as well as parts and materials are ordered and assembled. The aircraft are then fitted with a ferry fuel system consisting of dedicated and internationally approved 500 gallon fuel tanks that are installed in the cabin of each aircraft. Once all modifications are completed, the aircraft are tested with extensive ground runs, fuel system checks and post maintenance test flights. Safety for everyone and everything is of the utmost high priority. Nothing is left to chance.

The trip from Canada to Australia is quite a stretch for both aircraft and crew. Traditionally, each aircrew select a different route, one that better suits the flight characteristics of each aircraft. The crew takes the Avro RJ85 south to Oakland, California, and then west to Honolulu, Hawaii, continuing to Amata Kabua International Airport on the Marshall Islands, then to the Guam International Airport, then to the Solomon Islands before heading to Cairns, Australia and then south to New South Wales. In-flight flying time, depending on weather and winds, will be around 24 hours over two or three days.

While the Dash 8-400 crew leaves Abbotsford and heads straight southwest to Honolulu, and then routes through the Marshall Islands then on to the Solomon Islands. However, if weather and wind conditions are ideal, they may be able to head directly to Cairns, bypass-

ing the Guam leg of the trip. Flying time again will be close to 20 to 24 hours over two or three days.

The RJ in RJ85 stands for Regional Jet, a plane designed to fly approximately three and one-half hours at an average cruising air-speed of about 360 knots (666 kph) and the Dash 8-400, although a little slower, is much easier on fuel. Upon arrival in Australian airspace, the aircraft and crews are greeted with a warm and welcoming G’day, thanks for coming out mate!

Safely Back Home

Last fire season, Conair ferried two RJ85’s to Australia and one Dash 8-400. At the end of the Australian fire season and early this spring both RJ’s returned to Canada, retracing their out-bound route. Following specialized maintenance both have now been deployed to fires in Alberta and British Columbia. For the foreseeable future, the Dash 8-400 will remain in Australia splitting its time in support of firefighters in both New South Wales and Queensland.
