This Purim, Jews around the world will celebrate the holiday commemorating the salvation of the Jewish People in Ancient Persia, with extra meaning. The festival which is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew Month of Adar, begins this year after nightfall on Saturday, March 23rd and goes until nightfall on Sunday, March 24th. It’s one of the most joyous days on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the overturning of a royal decree which called for the extermination of all Jews throughout the Persian Empire in 356 B.C.E.

overcoming the present challenges and a brighter future, as in the story of Purim, when the table was turned with miracles from the Almighty, the Jews were victorious over their enemies.

The relevance and message of the festival of Purim has never been more acute than today. That is, when faced with those who wish evil upon us, the response of the Jewish People is to strengthen our trust in G-d and turn to joy as a way of combating darkness.

In 1971, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, called upon people in Israel to assist the soldiers of the IDF to fulfill the observances of Purim. The Purim Awareness Campaign has since expanded to reach all Jews, and today impacts people at hospitals, nursing homes, children at school and of course regular folks in the streets.

The Jewish People are going through a very difficult time, but Purim reminds us that ultimately, through coming closer to G-d and our heritage, G-d will guide us through this time as he did for our ancestors, and this is why, despite all the evil, we will celebrate, as we have done countless times throughout our history.

Although the general theme of Purim is all about Joy, the four specific Mitzvahs associated with this holiday are: 1) Giving gifts of money to at least two poor people.

2) Sending food gifts, made up of at least two types of foods, to at least one friend.

3) Enjoy a festive Purim meal, preferably with friends. And 4) Recounting the story of the Purim miracle, by reading the Megilla, also known as the Scroll of Esther.

When we take the focus off of ourselves, and instead see how we can help others, by giving charity and giving gifts of food. When our focus is shifted from celebrating in silence, to having a meal with others. When we remember the miracles that occurred, not just to our ancestors many years ago, but also to us, over and over again.. It really forces us to bring out our inner joy, and slowly transform it into a pure joy!

I encourage you to contact your local Chabad or Synagogue to see what they’re doing to celebrate. Thinking Cap Theatre presents The Taming of the Shrew in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center from March 22nd – April 3rd.

This comedy epitomizes the age-old battle of the sexes in the tumultuous courtship of the characters Katherina and Petruchio and has become one of Shakespeare’s most controversial works dividing audiences on whether the play wright was a misogynist or a protofeminist.

Thinking Cap’s innovative staging will allow performers and audiences alike to experience and judge different casting and directorial choices in real time to explore our shifting perceptions of what’s playable, offensive or funny.

This production is part of The People vs. Shakespeare’s Shrew, a multifaceted project that invites audiences to engage deeply with this problem play through complementary programming that includes staged readings of Shakespeare’s first folio script and John Fletcher’s 1611 response play entitled The Woman’s Prize or the Tamer Tamed. This free Outdoor Concert Series on Fort Lauderdale Beach is presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Business Improvement District, Every Friday Night April 12th – May 17th, 2024.

The producers of Friday Night Sound Waves are giving guests the opportunity to check #41 off Author Christiana Lilly’s “100 Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale Before You Die” list, with a spring revival of the popular free concert series at The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Park), every Friday, April 12th through May 17th, 2024 from 6:30–9:30 p.m.

As part of the national book launch of the highly anticipated new book HOLIDAYS ALL YEAR with POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance, Award-Winning local Author and Broadway Director Neil Goldberg celebrates cultural diversity and inclusion throughout holidays all year with South Florida children, local organizations and worldwide. Upon release, the book immediately garnered critical acclaim, was a featured event at New York City’s premier children’s bookstore, Books of Wonder, and has been selected by the Children’s Book Council for its prestigious “Hot Off The Press” list.

Smoky Chorizo and Chicken Pozole

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Servings: 6-8

• 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

• 1 Large White or Yellow Onion, finely chopped

• 1 Teaspoon of Kosher Salt, plus additional, to taste (optional)

• 1 9 Ounce Package of Cacique Pork Chorizo

• 2 Teaspoons of Smoked Paprika

• 1 Teaspoon of Dried Mexican Oregano

• 1 16 Ounce Container of Cacique

Medium Homestyle Salsa

• 1 Quart of Chicken Stock

• 2 Pounds of Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs or Breasts, trimmed of excess fat and diced

• 1 25 Ounce Can of White Hominy, drained and rinsed

• 1 Lime, cut into wedges

• 3/4 Cup of crumbled Cacique Ranchero Queso Fresco

• 1/2 Cup of Chopped Cilantro

In a large, heavy pot over medium heat, heat the Oil. Reserve the 1/4 Cup of Onion for garnish; add the remaining Onion to the pot and season with it the Salt. Sauté until translucent for about 5 minutes.

Increase the heat to medium-high; add the Pork Chorizo and break it apart with a spoon. Cook the Chorizo undisturbed until

it is deeply browned and cooked through for 3-5 minutes. Add the Smoked Paprika and the Oregano and cook it for 30 seconds, or until it is fragrant.

Pour in the Salsa and scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring it to a simmer for 1-2 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly then add the Stock and bring it to a simmer.

Stir in the Diced Chicken and the Hominy. Decrease the heat to medium and cook it for 8-10 minutes until the Chicken is cooked through. Taste and season it with more Salt, if necessary then remove it from the heat.

Serve the bowls of the Pozole with the reserved Onion, the Lime Wedges, the Crumbled Queso Fresco and the Chopped Cilantro.

Mexican Loaded Mashed Potatoes

Prep time: 35 minutes

Cook time: 40 minutes

Servings: 10

• 3 Pounds of Russet Potatoes (about 9 medium potatoes), peeled and cubed

• 1/2 Teaspoon of Pepper

• 1 Cup of Cacique Oaxaca or Queso Quesadilla, shredded

• 1/2 Cup of Cacique Crema Mexicana Agria, for topping (optional)

• 3 Green Onions, chopped

In a Dutch oven, add the Potatoes and cover them with the Water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat; cook it uncovered for 10-15 minutes or until it is tender.

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the Bacon until it is crisp. Drain it on the paper towels, chop it into small pieces and set them aside. Remove the Bacon Grease from the skillet and cook the Chorizo over medium-high heat for 6-8 minutes.

Drain the Potatoes and add them to the pan. Mash the Potatoes, gradually adding the Crema Mexicana, the Butter, the Onion Powder, the Salt, the Garlic Powder and the Pepper. Transfer them to a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish; sprinkle them with the Cheese, the Chorizo and the Bacon. Refrigerate, covered for up to 1 day.

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Remove the Potatoes from the refrigerator and let them stand while the oven heats. Bake them covered for about 30 minutes. Uncover it; bake them for 10 minutes, or

Tyranny Is Rising As Freedom Falls The State Of Our Nation No One’s Talking About

The

is being used to patrol Subway Stations and Police, the U.S.Mexico Border, supposedly in the name of National Security. The Financial Sector is being used to carry out broad surveillance of Americans’ private financial data, while the entertainment sector is being tapped to inform on video game enthusiasts with a penchant for violent, potentially extremist content, all in an alleged effort to uncover individuals subscribing to Anti-Government Sentiments.

Public and private venues are being equipped with sophisticated surveillance technologies, including biometric and facial recognition software, to track Americans wherever they go and whatever they do. Space Satellites with powerful overhead surveillance cameras will render privacy null and void.

This is the state of our nation that no one is talking about—not the politicians, not the courts, and not Congress: the government’s power grabs are growing bolder, while the rights of the citizenry continue to be trampled underfoot.

Hitler is hiding in the shadows, while the citizenry—the only ones powerful enough to stem the authoritarian tide that threatens to lay siege to our constitutional republic—remain easily distracted and conveniently diverted by political theatrics and news cycles that change every few days.

This sorry truth has persisted no matter which party has controlled Congress or the White House.

These are dangerous times.

Yet while the presidential candidates talk at length about the dangers posed by the opposition party, the U.S. Government still poses the gravest threat to our freedoms and way of life.

Police shootings of unarmed individuals, invasive surveillance, roadside blood draws, roadside strip searches, SWAT

Team raids gone awry, the military industrial complex’s costly wars, pork barrel spending, pre-crime laws, civil asset forfeiture, fusion centers, militarization, armed drones, smart policing carried out by AI Robots, Courts that march in lockstep with the Police State, schools that function as indoctrination centers, bureaucrats that keep the Deep State in power: these are just a few of the ways in which the Police State continues to flex its muscles in a show of force intended to intimidate anyone still clinging to the antiquated notion that the government answers to “We The People.”

Consider for yourself the state of our nation: Americans have little protection against Police abuse. Americans are little more than pocketbooks to fund the Police State. Americans are no longer innocent until proven guilty. Americans no longer have a right to self-defense. Americans no longer have a right to private property. Americans no longer have a say about what their children are exposed to in school. Americans are powerless in the face of militarized police forces. Americans no longer have a right to bodily integrity. Americans no longer have a right to the expectation of privacy. Americans no longer have a representative government. Americans can no longer rely on the courts to mete out justice.

I haven’t even touched on the corporate state, the military industrial complex, SWAT Team raids, invasive surveillance technology, zero tolerance policies in the schools, overcriminalization, or privatized prisons, to name just a few, but what I have touched on should be enough to show that the landscape of our freedoms has already changed dramatically from what it once was and will no doubt continue to deteriorate unless Americans can find a way to wrest back control of their government and reclaim their freedoms.

This steady slide towards Tyranny, meted out by militarized local and Federal Police and legalistic bureaucrats, has

been carried forward by each successive president over the past seventy-plus years regardless of their political affiliation.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

We are walking a dangerous path right now.

Having allowed the government to expand and exceed our reach, we find ourselves on the losing end of a tug-ofwar over control of our country and our lives. And for as long as we let them, government officials will continue to trample on our rights, always justifying their actions as being for the good of the people.

Yet the government can only go as far as “We The People” allow. Therein lies the problem.

We have relinquished control over the most intimate aspects of our lives to government officials who, while they may occupy seats of authority, are neither wiser, smarter, more in tune with our needs, more knowledgeable about our problems, nor more aware of what is really in our best interests.

The government has knocked us off our rightful throne. It has usurped our rightful authority. It has staged the ultimate coup. Its agents no longer even pretend that they answer to “We The People.”

Worst of all, “We The People” have become desensitized to this constant undermining of our freedoms.

We are fast approaching a moment of reckoning where we will be forced to choose between the vision of what America was intended to be (a model for self-governance where power is vested in the people) and the reality of what it has become (a Police State where power is vested in the government).

We are repeating the mistakes of history—namely, allowing a totalitarian state to reign over us.

Former Concentration Camp Inmate Hannah Arendt warned against this when she wrote:

“No matter what the specifically national tradition or the particular spiritual source of its ideology, totalitarian government always transformed classes into masses, supplanted the party system, not by one-party dictatorships, but by mass movement, shifted the center of power from the army to the police, and established a foreign policy openly directed toward world domination.”

So where does that leave us?

Aldous Huxley predicted that eventually the government would find a way of “making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.”

The answer? Get unbrainwashed, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries,

Stop allowing yourself to be distracted and diverted.

Learn your rights.

Stand up for the founding principles.

Make your voice and your vote count for more than just political posturing.

Never cease to vociferously protest the erosion of your freedoms at the local and national level.

Most of all, do these things today.

The ramifications are substantial; women suffering from iron deficiency experience fatigue and cognitive impairment, while pregnant women face an increased risk of complications during childbirth. Moreover, babies born to mothers with iron defi ciency are at risk of developmental issues, and the mothers themselves may expe rience postpartum depression.

This issue also exacerbates gender and racial inequalities. Women are expected to have lower blood hemoglobin levels than men, affecting their ability to concentrate at work and potentially lead ing to more missed days. Furthermore, teenage girls with low iron may struggle academically, perpetuating educational disparities. Iron deficiency disproportion ately affects Hispanic and African American women and their infants, high lighting broader racial inequalities in healthcare.

Traditional oral iron supplements often fall short in addressing iron deficiency due to poor absorption and insufficient iron content. Instead, iron infusions have emerged as a more effective and safer alternative, steadily gaining popularity among women and their healthcare pro viders.

A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason illuminating the works and composers will take place 30 minutes prior to the New World Center concert, only.

Russian Composer Igor Stravinsky’s (1882 - 1971) The Firebird Suite, based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner, was first performed at the Opéra de Paris in 1910 and was an instant success, catapulting him to international fame. The memorable neoclassical work embodying good and evil has been

Leonard Bernstein (1918 – 1990), America’s Famed Composer and Conductor, takes his concert suite “Three Dance Episodes” from the hit musical On the Town, a wartime romantic comedy about three sailors with 24 hours’ shore leave in New York City. Composed in 1944, this popular, Jazzy piece was Bernstein’s first composition for Broadway. This work is a South Florida Symphony Premiere.

Another South Florida Symphony Premiere is Pompano Beach-based Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Clarinet Concerto featuring the equally award-winning talents of Clarinetist David Shifrin (original performer of the piece). Zwilich had already begun her Concerto for Clarinet (commissioned by the Arlene and Milton D. Berkman Philanthropic Fund) by the time the 9/11 World Trade Center Attacks occurred. In his review of the 2003 world premiere performance of the piece in 2003, Peter G. Davis of New York Magazine observed: “Like everyone else, composers were badly shaken by 9/11, and their musical responses are beginning to be heard. (This work) would surely have turned out to be quite a different piece had not the fatal date arrived just as she was about to start work on the second movement. That inevitably became an elegy, and the subsequent two movements grew from there.”

Winner of the coveted Avery Fisher Prize, David Shifrin has long been one of the most highly respected American Clarinetists for his work as Orchestral

Soloist, Recitalist, Chamber Music Collaborator and Educator. He has appeared with the nation’s foremost symphonies and internationally with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. A much sought after chamber musician, he has collaborated with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Guarneri, Tokyo, Emerson, Orion, Dover and Miro String Quartets, Trumpeter and Composer Wynton Marsalis, and Pianists Emanuel Ax, André Previn and André Watts. He has served as Principal Clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), the Honolulu, Dallas and New Haven symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony. Shifrin joined the faculty at the Yale School of Music in 1987 and since 2008, has been the Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale and Yale’s Annual Concert Series at Carnegie Hall. In January 2022, he was named the Samuel S. Sanford Professor in the Practice of Clarinet. He has also served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii. “The school does not have proper Baseball Fields. The Football Field needs upgrades that are found at other schools. The school has lost many sports programs due to this and the parking lots are shabby.”

A few weeks ago, I wrote to our readers about changes that were taking place in Broward County Schools. There was a sigh of relief that they were not closing Hallandale High School. This did not mean their work re-defining our schools stopped. Dr. Licata made it clear to all stakeholders that in fact everything was on the table. There could still be closed, combined schools, reproduced schools, investments in partnerships between cities and the school board, Mayor and all stakeholders have a task with making suggestions on the possibilities.

The following is a letter that I submitted with a list of observations that I had gleaned from visiting all the schools and centers within the community. I had a chance to speak with many individuals about their ideas and suggestions. The work of the School Board will continue and we all need to keep an eye on their progress and changes.

I want to thank you for your generosity of time during this process. While underenrolled schools partially prompted the discussion I understand there are many

other factors that have impacted our district. I commend you and the board for taking these bold steps to address vital needs to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

I know we have discussed many of the items below but wanted to at least document them. There will always be opportunities to partner on many levels. I have discussed housing opportunities at GELC, and you mentioned opportunities at Lanier. The other is with HACC fields, but I am not certain if our own budget restraints or commission policy could support partnership investments there.

Through my conversations at schools and with other stakeholders I wanted to make sure you and the board know from my observations what is lacking and what is envisioned. Programming is important and may be beneficial on a financial level as well. As long as it is in the right place and managed properly.

Hallandale High School: Upgrades, Additional Programming and After-hours use. The school was slated to be rebuilt and the state stopped funding. While we all know that education for students and teaching staff is the top priority, school buildings matter. School buildings create a place of pride for students, teachers and the community. The piecemeal improvements over the years are great but some are still not complete.

The school does not have proper

Baseball Fields. The Football Field needs upgrades that are found at other schools. The school has lost many sports programs due to this. Parking lots are shabby. Stakeholders think the single point entry is good but could be embellished to make the entry more appealing. While these items are not critical they are important to build pride and make the school welcoming.

Before I cover suggestions on programs I would like to share a global observation. “Every” principal and parent I have had a chance to speak with supports uniforms 100%. The key component was the time consumed over discipline issues over clothing. This takes administration and teachers away from their key goal of education and safety. School uniforms create a point of pride, respect, discipline, remove inappropriate distractions and create a springboard of being part of something greater than oneself. The argument of letting someone be able to express their uniqueness should be through class education and activity not clothing. In fact, bullying will always be taking place, but implementing a Countywide policy for all students will certainly help to preempt some harassment and shaming.

Magnet programs serve a purpose and are a great option for focused studies, but they seem to have caused more competition among regular schools when they

already face challenges from charters and choice. The way magnets are established, funded, and teachers are hired is not always maintainable.

Stakeholders would like to see more training programs that will develop job skills and ability to join the workforce. I have heard many times that not all students are suitable for or can afford college. Automotive, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Computer Skills and other trades could be offered. These courses could be given at existing schools during and/or after hours. They could be combined with GED Courses and Language Courses. Leaving school resources idle after the school day ends is not a good use for an existing school.

Graduation is paramount and those students wanting and able to further their education by attending college should also be given every opportunity and access to resources found in every private school.

there is the potential of feeling overwhelmed. When this happens, it can create a cascading effect. Your attitude turns negative, you feel distressed, your patience is worn thin, you become frustrated, your energy level drops, and you become discouraged.

When you get into this mode, you feel powerless to extricate yourself. It seems that whatever you try is ineffectual. Nothing you do makes any difference. Although you desperately need a break, problems keep piling up. You feel like a victim with no ability to make any positive changes. You are perplexed as to why these things are happening to you. Being a good person, you don’t deserve what is happening and it’s just not fair.

Why do bad things happen? Why are we faced with unfortunate situations? People have pondered these questions since the beginning of time without discovering any meaningful answers. We have little or no control over some of the circumstances that we face.

There are many circumstances that are potentially overwhelming. They include natural disasters, economic misfortune, crime, loss of a loved one, failed or troubled relationships, family problems, and physical ailments.

Whereas you can’t control what happens to you, you do have control over how you respond. Getting through an overwhelming period is challenging but it is doable. The bottom line is that you have no choice but to persevere. It will be a struggle, but giving up will only exacerbate your predicament.

The way to make it through tough times is one day at a time. When even that seems overwhelming, take it one hour at a time. Give yourself a mental reprieve by changing your focus to what is OK in your life. You want to develop an attitude of gratitude. When you go through a list of what you have to be grateful for it helps break the

negative thought cycle.

The trap is that a negative attitude and bitterness repels what you want while attracting what you don’t want. When you are overwhelmed, it is very hard to alter your attitude. You don’t see any light and everything appears tainted. You become caught in a downward spiral.

Developing your attitude of gratitude will break the negative cycle. At first, you may not think there is anything to be grateful for. However, you will find things. No positive aspect is too small or insignificant. The more you think about what is good in your life, the more of a positive impact it will have.

Next, give yourself credit for any successes you have had, regardless of how small or insignificant you consider them. Even the things you tried that didn’t work as planned are accomplishments. It indicates you are being proactive. Unfortunately, many people take a passive role, just waiting for circumstances to improve.

Since you never know how close you are to discovering solutions that work, you must persist. Take inspiration from those people throughout history who have overcome situations far more extreme that what you are facing. If they can do it, so can you.

Your thoughts control your feelings. Even in dire circumstances, your thoughts are under your command. Your mind works nonstop to bring your thoughts to reality. When you believe that you will make it through, this is what your mind will work toward. Conversely, if you don’t feel there is any way out, your mind will actually work to keep you where you are.

When you are overwhelmed, you can and will overcome the challenges facing you. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Take small steps, develop a strong attitude of gratitude, take one day at a time, and don’t give up. Others have succeeded and so will you.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) announced a new educational tool to help adults discuss Alzheimer’s Disease with young children in an ageappropriate way. Gardening with Grandma: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families is an educational children’s book created by AFA as a resource for adults.
