Hallandale Beach Embraces Sustainability With The Launch Of The “Cloud”

The Largest Electric Bus Fleet Owned By A Municipality In Florida

“The City of Hallandale Beach is committed to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2055” Hallandale Beach City Manager

Dr. Jeremy Earle

In a significant stride towards a greener future, the City of Hallandale Beach, in partnership with the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA), unveiled its groundbreaking initiative – the “Cloud” allelectric bus fleet on April 4th, 2024, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at HallandaleBeachCityHall.

During the unveiling event, the City Commission, county officials, and program partners joined City Manager and HBCRA Executive Director Dr. Jeremy Earle to welcome the fleet of nine electric buses to the City. Attendees enjoyed test rides around the community and learned more about how the Cloud service is furthering the City’s commitment to keeping ProgressattheForefront.

As the largest electric bus fleet owned

by any municipality in Florida, the Cloud marks a pivotal moment in the City’s commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Progressive Urban Planning. With service to the community beginning Friday, April 5th, 2024, the Cloud embodies the City’s dedication to innovation and its vision for a cleaner, healthiertomorrow.

The Cloud service aims to enhance accessibility and mobility for residents and visitors alike with larger buses that accommodate the community’s needs, including those who use a wheelchair or ride a bike or scooter. Additionally, the FREE Bus Service provides all riders with complimentary WiFi, better service, more space, and extended routes. The addition oftwostopsatWalmartandAventuraMall extends the reach of the service, promoting convenience and connectivity throughout the City. With nine vehicles in

The Cloud represents just one component of Hallandale Beach’s comprehensive electric transportation system, which includes e-bikes, electric vehicles, and more. Notably, the Hallandale Beach Police Department has already integrated 13 all-electric vehicles into its fleet of service vehicles, alongside 49 hybrid Police Interceptor vehicles; the largest fleet in the nation. Of course, there also needs to be the charging infrastructure to support the fleet; there are a number of charging stations throughout Hallandale Beach, including the newly installed bus charging stations. Thanks to the adoption of EV and hybrid vehicles, the City is reducing its fleet-related emissions by approximately 600 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to the savings of 117 homes’annualelectricityusage!

In addition to being a better option for the environment, electric vehicles are also a fiscally sound choice for the City. While the upfront cost to purchase electric vehicles is higher than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles show reduced energy costs when compared to gas costs, saving approximately$10,000pervehicle,peryear.

The realization of the Cloud fleet, including charging Infrastructure, was made possible through strategic partnerships and funding. A $3.4 Million Grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) combined with a $2.5 Million contribution from the City, totaling$5.9Million,facilitatedtheimplementationofthisproject.

operation, the Cloud fleet evokes a sense of euphoria akin to floating on “Cloud nine,” symbolizing the City’s commitmenttoasustainablefuture.

April Is Stress Awareness Month Six Stress Reduction Tips For Caregivers

Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and related Dementias are at greater risk for anxiety, depression.

Stress doesn’t just affect your mood— it can have long-term health impacts as well if you don’t take steps to manage it constructively. For individuals who face the stressful task of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or another Dementia-Related Illness, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is offering six stress reduction tips for caregivers as part of National Stress AwarenessMonth(April).

“Family caregivers often find it challenging to make time for themselves, but being proactive about addressing caregiver Stress and self-care is not selfish; it’s essential and it benefits both the caregiver and the person for whom they are caring,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Failing to manage Stress

increases the risks of caregiver burnout, Depression, and many other Mental and Physical Health Issues. Caregivers need to take care of themselves so they can provide the best possible care for their loved ones.” Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and related Dementias are at greater risk for Anxiety, Depression, and poorer quality of life than caregivers of people with other conditions, and provide care for a longer duration of time, according to the Centers for Disease ControlandPrevention(CDC).

AFA offers these six Stress reduction tips for family caregivers:

Be adaptable and positive. Your attitude influences stress levels for both you and the person you’re caring for. If you can “go with the flow,” and avoid fighting the current, that will help you both stay relaxed—conversely, becoming aggravated or agitated will increase the chances that your person will as well.

Focus on how to adjust to the situation in aconstructiveway.

Deal with what you can control. Some thingsaretotallyoutofyourcontrol. What is in your power to control is how you respond and react to these outside factors. Concentrating on finding solutions can help make the problem itselfalittlelessstressful.

Set realistic goals and go slow. Everything cannot be resolved at once, nordoesitneedtobe.Don’tholdyourself to unrealistic expectations. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, andtakethingsonedayatatime.

Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet, and lack of exercise can all exacerbate Stress (and cause other health problems as well). As best you can, make it a priority to get sleep, eat right, drink plenty of water and find ways to be active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved oneifyoudon’ttakecareofyourself.

Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, Yoga, Meditating, listening to music or

even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce Stress. Find something that works for you and do itregularly!

Share your feelings. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases Stress. Whether it’s with a loved one, trusted friend or a professional, don’t be reluctant to talk about your Stress, because that can actuallyhelprelieveit! AFA’sHelplinehas licensed social workers available for caregivers seven days to provide support orevenjustlisten.

AFA’s Helpline, staffed entirely by licensed social workers who are specifically trained in Dementia Care, can provide additional information and support for families. The Helpline is available seven days a week by phone at: (866) 232-8484. By Text message at: (646) 586-5283. And Web Chat at: www.alzfdn.org.

Let Go Of The Anchor: What Is Holding You Down In Life

In order to let go of the anchor, you must be aware of the fact that you are holding onto one.

Imagine you are swimming while holding a heavy anchor which is pulling you under water. What would you do? Of course you would let go of the anchor to keep from drowning. Maintaining your grip on the anchorwouldleadtocertaindisaster. With your survival at stake, you wouldn’t hesitate to drop the anchor. Yet, in life there are issues you are hanging onto which are drowning you. Anger, hate, bitterness, resentment, and grudges are all anchors pulling you to the bottom. Trying to change circumstances outside of your control also drags you to thebottom.

The problem is that from a

young age you have become accustomed to holding on to anchors.Thepotentialdamageis not readily recognized because there doesn’t appear to be any immediate threat. Furthermore, there is a tendency to pick up and hold onto additional anchors. Then in response to the weight increasing to unmanageable levels, you tend to tighten yourgripratherthanlettinggo.

There are several reasons for this self-destructive behavior. First of all, you don’t realize you are actually carrying an anchor. Instead, you have become conditioned to believing that your feelings are the result of what othersaredoingtoyou, notwhat you are doing to yourself. Since you are not aware of the anchor you’re carrying, letting go of it is never even considered an option.

Another reason for not letting

go is the false belief that your negative feelings are somehow detrimental to the person you blame. This thinking implies that when you are angry, bitter or upset, the person responsible for your feelings is in some way harmed by your anchor. This logic makes as much sense as believing the weight you are carrying is making someone else tired.

Trying to change someone else is another anchor to let go of. This endeavor leads to never ending frustration. A person can change if they want to, but you cannot make them do it. Although you don’t have any control over the actions of others, you do have control over yourresponse.

When you persist in attempting to get others to change, your anchor grows in weight, pulling you down deeper and deeper.

Your grip tightens as you get even more determined to force changes. This is a doomed scenario which typically tears relationshipsapart.

Let go of this anchor by recognizing people for who they are. Deal with them on this level. Put your energy into your response to their actions. Just because someone acts doesn’t meanyouhavetoreact.

Continually being offended and taking things personally is yet another anchor. Becoming upsetneverimprovesasituation. Truefreedomisattainedthrough the realization that it really doesn’t matter what other peoplethink, say, ordo.

In order to let go of the anchor, youmustbeawareofthe

fact that you are holding onto one. Accomplishing this requires you to constantly monitor your emotional state. Your goal is an awareness of how you are feeling andwhy.

Understanding this cause and effectrelationshipenablesyouto recognize when you are holding onto an anchor. Through this approach, you will find you are holding onto anchors more frequently than you realized. Just let go each time you grab onto ananchor.

You are now in the process of changing a lifelong habit. Don’t make any excuses for holding onto the anchor. Never say to yourself: “I can’t let this go.” Letting it go is essential for your MentalandPhysicalWell-Being.

The Remarkable Journey Of College Prep Jewish Academy (CPJA) Middle School Students

On Wednesday, April 3rd, at the G7 Rooftop in Hollywood, an extraordinary event left attendees awestruck with its panoramic views of the Guitar Hotel. As the sun set over Hollywood, guests were treated to a visual spectacle that perfectly complemented the event’s ambiance. The memorable evening featured renowned Israeli musician Gad Elbaz, alongside event hosts, Real Estate Moguls Sharon & Miriam Sharaby. Other prominent guests included Tamara James, former Mayor of Dania Beach, Adam Gruber, Commissioner of Hollywood, Lior Ofir, COO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Melissa Glaser, Director of Teach Florida. Special messages were shared by Mayor of Hollywood, Josh Levy, com munity Rabbis, and pop star Nissim Black amongotherdistinguishedguests.

What were these individuals celebrat ing? An achievement that has never been seen in the history of Florida. In the heart of Hollywood, Florida, amidst a diverse community of immigrants and workingclass families, lies College Prep Jewish Academy—a beacon of hope and oppor tunity for its students. Against all odds, the Middle School students at College Prep achieved something truly extraordinary, rewriting the narrative of what’s possible for young learners. All students in the 8th Grade Honors class at College Prep passed the PERT college entrance exam and are now taking college classes for college credit. That was not a typo, 8th graders taking college courses! This evening celebrated the triumph of hope, hard work, anddetermination!

Prep has shattered all preconceived notions by preparing their middle school studentstopassthischallengingexam.

The passing of the PERT exam by the entire 8th-grade class at College Prep is a testament to students’ academic prowess and determination. Head of School, Rabbi Chaim Albert compared this achievement to the story of Rabbi Akiva, the great Jewish sage who only began learning Torah later in life yet achieved greatness throughdeterminationandhumility.

The PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test) exam serves as a crucial milestone for students aspiring to pursue higher education, assessing their readiness for college-level coursework. Passing the dual enrollment exam was once believed to be reserved for elite upperclassmen, in 10th and 11th grade. College

These 8th grade students in College Prep are now on their way to complete over 2 years of college credits while still in high school. This incredible feat will help these students as they attempt to apply for college in the future but will also save families/students thousands of dollars in the high sticker cost of college. By gaining early exposure to college-level coursework, these students are not only preparing for their future but also gaining a competitive edge in higher education and beyond.

What’s the secret sauce of College Prep? Instead of waiting until students reach high school, College Prep starts layingthefoundationforcollegereadinessin middle school. College Prep’s motto is “CollegeStartsDay1.”

Central to the success of College Prep isitsexceptionalstaff, composedofhighly qualified educators dedicated to nurturing the potential of every student. A staggering 100% of College Prep staff hold

Masters Degrees, a testament to their commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. At the helm of this dedicated team is the Chief Academic Officer, a Harvard graduate whose leadership and vision have propelled College Preptonewheightsofexcellence.

Leading College Prep’s success story are two remarkable individuals—Yaisa Rodriguez and Marie Yoda, the Directors of College Prep and HonorsTracks. With a keen understanding of the unique challenges faced by 8th-grade students, Rodriguez and Yoda have devised a winning formula for preparing them for college success. Their innovative approach combines rigorous academics, personalized support, and a nurturing learning environment, empowering students to exceed expectations and reach their full potential.

College Prep also provides learning tracks to meet the multiplicity of interests of students. These tracks empower students to take ownership of their education, pursue their passions, and cultivate the skills and experiences necessary

to thrive in college and beyond. Whether students choose the Honors Track, College Prep Track, or Jewish Business Academy Track, they are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience to succeed in their academic and professionalpursuits.

Gad Elbaz beautifully summarized the evening by delivering an inspiring speech highlighting the crucial mission of bringing students out of public schools and into College Prep. Money must never stand in the way of a Jewish child claiming his rightful Jewish education. His words resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the importance of education and the power of community supportinshapingthefuturegeneration.

The story of College Prep demonstrates the Jewish belief that greatness may be achieved through humility and hard work. May this evening bring inspirationandhopetotheJewishfuture!
