Education

From

halls as he expressed his delight in providing students with an environment conducive to learning, relaxation, and exploration.

“Our students, our staff are delighted to be able to take part in this beautiful opportunity to ensure that our students have every opportunity to engage in learning, to be able to pick out a book and read, and be able to come out here and relax,” Mark said.

This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It was made possible through the Broward Schools’ voterapproved SMART Bond Program, which allocated approximately $9 Million for campus-wide enhancements. Hallandale Magnet High School seized this opportunity to not only renovate its media center but also to upgrade fire alarms, improve electrical systems, ensure ADA Compliance, enhance HVAC systems, and revamp STEM labs. It’s a testament to the school’s dedication to providing a top-tier educational experience for its students.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) stands as a shining example

of educational excellence, serving over 251,000 students and 110,000 adult learners across 239 schools, centers, and technical colleges. With a diverse student population representing 177 countries and speaking 153 languages, BCPS is a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and aspirations. Through initiatives like the SMART Bond Program, BCPS continues to uphold its mission of “educating all students to reach their highest potential.”

But what sets Hallandale Magnet High School’s new media center apart? It’s more than just a physical space—it’s a gateway to endless possibilities. Equipped with modern amenities such as tables, lounge chairs, computers, and a vast array of reading material, the media center serves as a hub for collaboration, creativity, and intellectual growth.

In an age where information is at our fingertips, the importance of cultivating strong literacy skills cannot be overstated. The media center provides students with access to explore new worlds, broaden their horizons, and think critically about the world around them.

But it’s not just about the media center, the room also serves as a sanctuary for students seeking res-

pite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. With inviting spaces, students can unwind, recharge, and connect with their peers in a relaxed setting.

Furthermore, the media center serves as a catalyst for innovation and creativity. Equipped with cuttingedge technology and multimedia resources, students can unleash their imagination, produce multimedia projects, and showcase their talents to the world, the possibilities are endless.

But perhaps the most significant impact of the new media center is its role in fostering a sense of community. As students gather to study, collaborate, or simply socialize, bonds are formed, friendships are forged, and memories are made. It’s a place where students from all walks of life come together to learn, grow, and inspire one another.

As Hallandale Magnet High School embarks on this new chapter, the future looks brighter than ever. With a state-of-the-art media center at its core, the school is poised to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. And as the ribbon falls and the doors swing open, one thing is certain: the journey has only just begun.

“Swim for Jenny”

YMCA of South Florida Is Offering Free Swim Lessons

With Florida leading the nation in childhood drownings, the YMCA of South Florida reaffirms its commitment to water safety and drowning prevention through its signature event, “Swim for Jenny.” This weeklong program offers free swim lessons to children and adults of all ages across South Florida, aiming to mitigate the risk of drowning and foster a culture of aquatic safety.

This year, “Swim for Jenny” will be held through Friday, March 29 at YMCA of South Florida locations in Fort Lauderdale (L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center), Hallandale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Weston.

Last year alone, 97 fatal drownings were reported in Florida. For every fatal drowning, five more nonfatal drownings require hospitalization and medical support, often leaving long-term impacts on victims.

“Drowning is the leading cause of death among children 1-4 years old, underscoring the urgent need for accessible swim instruction,” said YMCA of South Florida President and CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “South Florida is surrounded by water, and swim lessons are the difference between life and death. Formal swim lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%, and Swim for Jenny has given us the ability to impact tens of thousands of people throughout South Florida by removing barriers to swim instruction in our community.”

The event started in 2013 and honors the memory of a young girl named Jenny, who drowned in 2011 because she didn’t know how to swim. Since the inception of “Swim for Jenny,” more than 18,000 people have participated with more than 150,000 swim lessons provided.

Who Is Jenny?

Jenny was a one-of-a-kind child. She was smart, energetic, beautiful, and blessed with a loving family. Unfortunately, Jenny lost her life because she did not know how to swim. Swim For Jenny was created to help make sure all kids know how to swim, and how to be safe around the water. The program provides families with free swim lessons for kids.

Registration for free swim instruction through “Swim for Jenny” is now available by visiting: ymcasouthflorida.org/swimforjenny.

Joe’s Stone Crab, which celebrated its 107th anniversary in 2020, was established when Joseph Weiss came to Miami for a change of climate to help his

Asthma. Weiss opened a lunch stand, originally offering fish and fries, on Miami Beach, which eventually evolved into today’s establishment. It is located at 11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139.

Getting Back To Basics

Changes Have Triggered The Need To Rethink The District

Last

some needs, but I have not met with Principal Bonny yet because of Principal Campbell’s recent passing. The field at the school is just an empty field. It used to have a baseball field, batting cages, a soccer field and stands. PAL used to use

this field before we renovated all our parks. Our shared use agreement said we would take care of the field. The shared use agreement was not finished, and we were told we could not access it to cut. We have not used the fields there for a while.

From what I have gleaned it is uneven, there are no facilities except the PAL Concession Stand and Restrooms, and a storage room that is in bad shape and has holes in the roof. I do not know right now if there are any partnership opportunities but would leave that idea open. The Stallion Campus is an older building too and could use the same improvements as HHS.

Both campuses have a solid base. They have a great partnership onsite with United Way. I have learned that many ESOL students face difficulties. Many of the students live in poverty. Again, if these issues exist at the school, the service should be given at the school and not remotely.

Gulfstream Early Learning Center: Programs Realignment Housing. This location was an old elementary school that was shut down years ago and left empty for some time. In 2017, the city was told that it would be a training center for Broward College students and other daycare workers to get direct experience of 6 months to PreK children. This Center was mentioned at the Mayors meeting. I was surprised by the reference of this being a good partnership example.

Coincidentally, I was getting complaints about parking and congestion around the facility. I have had a chance to visit the school twice now. Again, it comes down to “it’s not the what, it’s the where.” School is now not simply just an early

Culture & Community Center.

S.E.A. Camp offers a classroom without walls with a focus on Marine Life and Natural Sciences. Campers will explore our Beach Areas, Marshes, and other Natural Areas of interest, and learn about fascinating creatures, Natural Habitats, Ecosystems and Environmental Issues. S.E.A. Camp Sessions are 3 weeks, beginning on June 17th.

Field trips, indoor and outdoor fun and games, arts & crafts, special performances, and events happen all summer long at the Driftwood Community Center Summer Camp operated by Sunshine Child Programs. Weekly sessions start June 12th and run through August 11th.

Children ages 8 to 17 can learn all about Ocean and Beach Safety at the

education center for children. The building is now a daycare. There are no regular classes for student teachers or daycare workers. There may be one or two teachers studying but I was unable to get any numbers or data on who is being served, if any. It is used sometimes for training conferences.

Language and GED Courses are available for adults. This is also the South Area Office for SB Staff and where voluntary PreK is registered for everyone from Route I-595 and below. Hispanic Unity rents space and offers programming and organizes events. There are now laundry and clothing services at no cost.

I was impressed by the administration there. I admire them and praised the staff for being excellent and caring. We supported the original idea even though some community members opposed it. But now this is not what we expected for our single-family neighborhood. The question remains: Is this the best way to use an asset or is this a chance to create more housing through a P3? I have discussed this with our Staff and certainly welcome the chance to discuss it further.

If the school desires to establish the Main Social Service Hub what are the costs and community impacts? What part does the county play? Should the services be centralized or at each school?

Lanier-James Education Center: Program Changes Possible Redevelopment. I visited the Lanier-James Education Center when it was first built. This building was somewhat of a black

eye on the community after not having a new High School built and also being a school for troubled students or those that are court ordered.

The school is new and looks nice. I noticed that it is not fully used. I do not know if that is intentional or because of the instability of some students. I am not an expert in education or juvenile justice, but this whole model from my brief observation needs to be examined.

I know your goal is to find ways to change our district to deal with low enrollment and underused facilities. I hope you realize that these are my views as a community leader. There is a lot of anxiety at the schools and clearly a lot of territorial attachment for all stakeholders.

Your efforts have great value and I encourage you to stay the course. Keep working on a plan to create stability. Even though financial and demographic changes triggered the need to rethink the district, these changes will be essential for the success of all our students.

It is never easy to make transformational changes to any organization. While it is a daunting task, I support your efforts. Moving forward please know I am available to assist, and my door is always open.

BCSB will be discussing these issues in the coming months with “everything on the table” as Dr. Licate has informed all stakeholders. I encourage our community to share their input with their ideas and suggestions as well. Visit the BCSB Website at: www.BrowardSchools.com

By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
Financial And Demographic
week I shared the first part of this article on Redefining Our Schools. Over the past months the School Board of Broward County has been gathering input from all stakeholders in our local schools. Due to many changes including but not limited to student population decreases, charter schools, school vouchers, school choice and other financial factors changes need to be transformational. BCSB leadership has set out to address changes to ensure all students have equitable access to quality education and opportunity.
part of this process Mayors were asked to share their observations and ideas to help level the playing field for our students. The following is a letter I sent after visiting our schools and speaking with stakeholders here in Hallandale Beach.

It’s A Baynanza: Have An Immediate & Positive Impact On Our Environment

The early 1980’s marked the beginning of a monumental effort by Miami-Dade County to save Biscayne Bay, and that effort grows today with Public and Private Partnerships committed to the protection of our natural resources. Baynanza, created as part of a larger effort to save the bay, is a celebration of Biscayne Bay and its significance as one of our most important Ecological Systems in South Florida. But this Ecological Treasure continues to suffer from Pollution and Degraded Water Quality due to Hydrological Changes, Aging Infrastructure, Nutrient Contamination and Chronic On and Offshore Littering.

While the environmental concerns that affect Biscayne Bay have reached alarming levels, events like Baynanza raise Critical Awareness for these concerns and can make an Immediate and Positive Impact on our Environment. Baynanza is a celebration of Biscayne Bay and its significance as one of the most important Ecological Systems in South Florida. Celebrated throughout March and April, Baynanza culminates with the

Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day where thousands of Volunteers join together to help clean up our bay’s shoreline. The 42nd Annual Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, April 13th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Noon. Sign up to celebrate our incredible Marine Resources and help restore the Biscayne Bay Watersheds at over 30 locations across Miami-Dade County. Registered Volunteers at all Cleanup Sites will receive a FREE Commemorative T-Shirt. Community Service Hours are available to ALL students who participate!

Remember to wear closed-toe shoes (tennis-type shoes) and bring gloves, water, trash bags and snacks for you and any volunteers in your party. We suggest you bring the following items with you when you participate in a Clean Up: Extra Water, Sunscreen, Mosquito Repellent, Hat or Visor, Sunglasses and a Grabber.
