A Quick Guide to Sun Protective Clothing Many people look for UPF, SunPro, Sun Guard, or UV numbers on clothing and these numbers are a good general guide to relative UV protection. Did you know that these ratings are not the same as SPF numbers on sunscreen and makeup products? “SPF” is a rating system subject to US FDA regulations. The FDA does not issue ratings and rankings on clothing so not all clothing companies put numbers on their hats, shirts, and pants. So, how to choose? If you’re looking at a garment that doesn’t have a sun protection rating number hold the item up to a light. If you can see a lot of light transmitted through the hat, pants, or top, look for a similar piece that doesn’t let as much light pass through it.
