As we close 2012 and look to 2013, we reflect on all of the events, challenges, and adventures we faced throughout the year. The Summit Hut staff has had a great deal of fun, but we have also shared in the excitement of outfitting all of our adventurous customers for their travels and trips. The Summit Hut has always been known for quality gear and advice, but we felt it necessary to do more in 2012. This year we added great technical information on much of our product displayed in our store. This allows easy access to the information you want to make an informed decision with our staff experts. Our staff has been working all year long testing product, training with local organizations on trails in the area, and have even put together informational sheets on hikes in Southern Arizona along with helpful hiking tips. We have also worked hard on bringing you timely information on events going on in Tucson as well as events throughout Arizona. With the increased attention to trail running and races in the area, we have put together a calendar of racing events in our footwear area to not only inform, but to also inspire. The Summit Hut is committed to being your local hot-spot for information on outdoor activities and events. The Summit Hut folks have had a great time this year, from climbing Mt. Rainier, backpacking the Paria Canyon, conquering the 8000 Meter Challenge, hiking in Oregon, climbing on Mt. Lemmon, traveling to England, and exploring the great Southwest. We firmly believe that we must enjoy what we do and make every effort to get outdoors so that we may help you find the right gear for your adventure. Once again the Summit Hut has been committed this year in volunteering and giving back to our community with our 100 Days of Service volunteer program and working with many of our non-profit groups in obtaining grants to help fund meaningful local projects in the area. We feel honored to have achieved all that we have this year and thank each and every one of you for the support you have given the Summit Hut. We are committed to seeing you out on the trail, doing what you enjoy outside, and continuing to be your number one local outdoor shop. Happy Holidays from everyone at the Summit Hut. Warmly, Dana, Jeremy and the Summit Hut Crew

“I have a few of these shirts and I use them everyday. They work great as an undershirt in the fierce summer, but also work great for hiking and climbing. It’s breathable, comfortable, and I’ve never gotten clammy in this shirt like I do with most synthetic (ie polyester) shirts. Nylon is the way to go.” -Jeremy Asher

ExOfficio $38

“I use this shoe for everything except for backpacking and epic day hiking. Fit is everything, and it fits my 2A scrawny feet impeccably well...with a few simple tweaks. These tweaks are adding my orthotics, wearing heavy cushioned socks, and utilizing the Sherpa/runner’s knot, which really stabilizes the heel.” -Kathy Simko

PhD Outdoor Light Mini SmartWool $15-$18

Women’s Raptor

La Sportiva $120; $150 (GTX)

“This is a good everyday sock to wear around work, or the house. What I like about the sock is its comfort. These socks were tested both at a martial arts workout capacity, an evening walk, and an 8-hour work shift. While using these socks working out, I found that I did not receive any excessive rubbing, or irritation that is normally acquired upon extensive heavy use with cotton.” -Larry Stevenson

“This pack is a great ‘do it all’ option. It’s big enough for a full day but compresses down well for shorter trips. The foam is comfortable and breaths well. I really love all of the attachment loops that tuck away when you don’t need them.” -Richard Allen

Our Amazing Community

With the help of our staff, we narrowed that list down to five of our favorites.

Earlier this year, Summit Hut set out to find three of our staff and customers’ favorite outdoor-related organizations. The response we got was incredible. First, we surveyed our staff who came up with a fantastic list of organizations doing amazing things around Tucson.

We then shared that list with our friends and fans on Facebook and asked for their opinions. The passion and excitement that you all showed for your favorite group was overwhelming! Each of the five groups showed why they were so highly regarded. By the end of our two-week voting process, we were extraordi-

Parks In Focus

Website: pif.udall.gov | Contact: pedersen@udall.gov

Parks in Focus changes lives by introducing youth from under-served communities to a world they never knew existed: the great outdoors. Through the medium of a camera’s lens, Parks in Focus encourages kids to explore their local environment, be active, and express themselves through photography. The program is free to participants and their families. More than 100 middle school youth from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson participate annually. Activities include neighborhood photo safaris, field trips to local natural areas like Saguaro National Park and Catalina State Park, and overnight trips that introduce participants to basic camping skills and outdoor ethics. The program culminates with week-long summer immersion trips to northern Arizona and Grand Canyon National Park. Additionally, Parks in Focus hosts youth photography exhibits at locations throughout Tucson to share photos and stories with the community. Why photography? The familiar technology of a digital camera creates a safety zone, enabling participants to explore an unfamiliar, even intimidating environment with new found curiosity. With enhanced awareness, kids learn to appreciate the wonders of nature in their own backyards and beyond. “I think Parks in Focus is a really good group and it helps you learn about nature and take photos and it’s really cool. If I wasn’t here, I’d probably be sitting at home, being lazy.” - Morgan, age 13 For more information, or to donate to Parks in Focus, please visit our website at: http://pif.udall.gov/donation/. To volunteer, contact Ashley Pedersen at pedersen@udall.gov.

Why We Love Them Parks in Focus combines two of my passions - photography and the outdoors. And to be able to help introduce a new generation to both of these hobbies is amazing. The perspective the kids have of nature is unbelievable! -Frank Camp

beauty and diversity of our great state. Each and every one of the organizations that was part of this whole process deserves praise for what they do. We are proud to be able to feature these three wonderful organizations in this publication and hope you will support them in any way you can!

The three groups represent a wonderful cross-section of what the outdoors means to the Tucson community. They prove the power that the outdoors has on developing successful and well-rounded youth. They demonstrate the drive and motivation that our region has in protecting our wild places. And they showcase the

Watershed Management Group (WMG) is a Tucson-based non-profit organization that helps connect people to their local environment to improve our quality of life. We are an actionbased group; we teach people and implement meaningful projects through hands-on workshops. One of our most popular programs is the Green Living Co-op, which uses a barn-raising model to build affordable water harvesting features, native landscapes, and edible gardens at residential properties. Our goal is to make Tucson a beautiful and healthy place to live, with tree-shaded streets, urban wildlife habitat, lush native gardens fed by rainwater, and plenty of locally-grown organic food. Our long-term vision is to restore our watershed and heritage of flowing rivers and bring back the Rillito and Santa Cruz rivers. WMG is a founding member and the primary fiscal sponsor of the Community Water Coalition, a group that provides leadership and guidance toward water policy that sustains healthy ecosystems and quality of life in the Tucson region. “Watershed Management Group is finding ways to educate our comWMG is also a founding partner of the Tucson Conserve to munity and work with neighborhoods to help sustainably manage Enhance Program, which works to ensure that water connatural resources. Desert Harvesters

Learn | blog.SummitHut.com

Website: desertharvesters.org Contact: hammermill@desertharvesters.org

Desert Harvesters works to promote, celebrate, and enhance local food security and production by encouraging the harvesting of local and native desert foods and the planting of indigenous, food-bearing shade trees in water-harvesting earthworks. In 2003 we were able to purchase a Meadows Mills #5 hammermill with funds from a PRO-Neighborhoods grant. The mill is able to quickly grind mesquite pods into flour, and conveniently provide people with a fresh and nutritious local food product (click here for more info on the nutritional breakdown of mesquite). We’ve put the mill on a trailer so we can take it to various milling events around southern Arizona. We plant native, multi-functional, food- and medicine-producing trees. We’ve been organizing native tree planting events in the Dunbar/Spring neighborhood since 1995, and we’ve consulted on and helped with other neighborhoods in their treeplanting events. We strive to plant the rain before we plant the trees by planting in and beside water-harvesting earthworks. This transforms stormwater from a flooding liability into a free and sustainable irrigation resource. Since 2003 we’ve primarily been enabling folks to conveniently grind ubiquitous mesquite pods into delicious and nutritious mesquite flour at our local milling events in the fall. Our milling events are usually held from late September through November, when the dew point has dropped from the humidity of summer. This follows the summer mesquite pod harvest, and ensures that the pods have had a chance to dry well and will not reabsorb moisture from the humid summer monsoon season weather (the pods must be dry to run through the mill without gumming it up. Pods are sufficiently dry when they quickly snap in two when you try to bend them).

Why We Love Them

“Desert Harvesters is a great local organization helping the community discover the diverse and unique qualities of the plants in all of our backyards. So many of us take the native plants we see every day for granite and do not view them as a food source the way they should be. The main milling event and fundraiser for our organization is coupled with a For thousands of years these plants have been mesquite and native-foods fiesta at the Dunbar/Spring Organic Community the main food for the indigenous peoples and Garden in central Tucson. This is a great opportunity for folks to taste the animals of the southwest. I encourage friends flavors of foods made from locally harvested wild produce, local organic garand family to take advantage of this fabulous dens, neighbors’ kitchens, and local organic food outlets. resource. We can all learn something new.” - Alex Cigrand
